It's also hell on your back. I used to enjoy running, but I have a muscle disease that worsens around age 13 or so, so for the past few years running has been very painful. At least I have a higher pain tolerance now :) .

Not to be intrusive, but what disease?

I dislike running, but I do enjoy going on long hikes.

Actually, I was just looking it up, and I think it might be this:

Maybe I just self diagnosed myself

i wasnt going to post, seeing as i am a swimmer and have no advice on running, but since you said it was okay to say: i hate running.

its pretty bad for your knees, especially cross country.

i imagine most people do it for fun or enjoyment, because its just so miserable if your dont like it.

I swim too, and i hate running. What do you swim?

Hmm, interesting. I remember I had a disease of the knee (some german name I can't remember) when I was ~13 that caused pain whenever I put weight on it. Apparently, it was fairly common around that age, but I hardly remember anything around that time, so it wasn't that bad. Don't forget to talk to your doctor. ;)

Yeah, about that.. lol. I first discovered this by accident. I went in to the doctor for a annual checkup (this was almost 2 years ago) and happened to mention to my doctor that the muscle pain every time I did any physical activity. I just happened I was going in for blood tests that day for I forget what reason. They got the results back, and found I had very very elevated levels of CPK (phosphocreatine kinase). Very elevated meaning a healthy adult has anywhere from 22-198 U/L (units per liter). I had roughly 5300 U/L. In other words 53x higher than normal. I had more blood tests done to be sure it wasn't just a fluke. And it wasn't. I saw a specialist, and he listed a few diseases it could be (none the right one).

They decided to have a liver biopsy done to see if it was a liver disorder. So I had to go down to UCLA and they cut into my side, and took a chunk of liver out. My liver results came back normal, and both my doctor and specialist was puzzled. They finally decided to have me take a muscle biopsy to see if it was something directly muscle related. So they cut into my leg (I was conscious for this, and got to see the inside of my leg (the back of my calf. I still have the scar.). Anyway, they got the results back, and found that my muscles weren't metabolizing proteins correctly. The doctor diagnosed it as a new type of muscular dystrophy (they're finding new types all the time). But I think it might be the disease I linked, because nearly every type of muscular dystrophy has muscle weakness/deterioration as one of they symptoms; neither of which I have.

Anyway, thats my story. At least I have a doctor's note now so that I don't fail PE because I can't run.

Shin splints and painful knees from crew are both a [bleep], but I like running overall. I might not think that I enjoy it, but when I'm done with it, I know that I've done well and I look back and love the fact that I went along and did it. I'm pretty sure I like running.

I'm not a good runner, never did well at endurance. I can't stand running in circles or on a treadmill till I add up 5K worth in distance, I don't mind running on tracks in forests and whatever but I much prefer mountain biking to that. The only time I run now is when "[cabbage] happens" tbh :P

I'd actually like to get into running. I've never timed myself or anything, but running around gets some energy out of me and it feels good. I think if I competed I would feel best in cross country. Can anyone give me like a week schedule of what I should start running if I am running for the first time? Whats cool is my uncle is a very dedicated runner and biker. He finished first in the 50-54 age group at the 2007 Boston Marathon. :D

Heh, sort of like running. Its the only sport that I don't do complete crap at, but I always get injured in some way or another. Hopefully that will change after cross country this year though, since at my mom's work they have one of those endless pools now :D . Hopefully not as much back/shin splint pain while running.

If you're running for the first time, try 1-3 miles per day. Take sundays off, unless you don't want to. I'm sure there are many online workouts you could find too.

If you want some training from a real coach, I'd recommend doing cross country. Its a little into the season, so you may be behind the other people. But that shouldn't stand in the way if you like running. Just keep working at it ::' .

A 17:47 was 8th in your state for cross country? What state do you live in?

I do run, and at the moment I'm 8th on my team. My best 5k time is 19:20, my best 2 mile on the track is 11:35, and my best mile is a 5:20. All of those will fall this year, however.

Washington...not sure if you're thinking it's fast or slow, so I'll rationalize it either way: Don't know how other states/countries do it, but in my area high schools are classified by size from 4A down to 3A, 2A, A, and B, meaning my school was in the least competitive bracket, so that may be why it seems slow. If it seems fast, that's probably because the entire pacific northwest is a hot-spot for running, just look at Oregon. In fact, two high schools in my (rather small) city made it to nationals and placed top 10, one of them being only a couple miles from school, and using my schools amazing trail system to train.

I was more thinking it was slow, no offense. My best runner friend just ran a 17:45 at a meet on Saturday under the attack of Tropical Storm Hannah. He finished 5th. I think that Virginia is a really fast state, somehow.

I just ran a 3 mile today, following our hurricane-riddled 5k on Saturday

19:27 today, 21:14 then. I was almost in the top ten.. Most of the schools in the meet sat their varsity, which is why I placed so high with a slow time.

my parents are forcing me to do xc, including the meets. im pretty nervous about them. they are expecting me to do so ell because i did good in elementary school, but now that i havent run on a daily basis for like 4 years im not too good.

EDIT: just thought i'd say running isnt necessarily helping me, im already skinny so all the calories being burned are screwing me over
