This is ridiculous.

1) Pedophiles use IRC and encrypted files on hosting sites to transfer child porn between each other.

2) To stop children viewing porn you do NOT need to introduce a nation wide blanket filter.

3) 22% speed loss whilst IDLE?!?!?! What about when it's in full swing???

4) All the legit sites that will inevitably be filtered due to the inaccuracy of modern filter systems.

5) This filter could be EASILY manipulated by the government to block political activist and protest websites/and or websites that do not agree with the government's policy.

6) If the cost of this program was put into something goodl, say HEALTHCARE, you would actually see a beneficial end result.

7) There are hundreds of anti-gov hacker websites and a fix will be out for this filter likely within hours/days.

Hey.

Not really possible at all, because the filter works at the ISP level & is applied every time you send or recieve data. You can't just make a client-side 'fix' for it. Even if they somehow managed to hack an ISP's main server and remove the filter, it would be back up in no time. What's more likely is that proxies will just become more common for torrent users etc.

I'm just going to ask a question for each I find strange.

1) How do you know that?

2) Why not? How can it hurt

5) Do you not trust that the government can do ANY good? Do you ever believe they're trying to help?

6) Honestly, seems as big of/a bigger waste than stopping cp.

7) Give them some credit, these government organizations don't have crappy firewalls that anyone can easily get in to. It took 4chan weeks to get Palin's email when she had easy recovery questions, what makes you think they'll find a giant loop within hours?

That's 4chan, we are talking about government hating hackers. These people will stop at nothing to embarrass the government.

1) It's common knowledge and referenced in numerous news articles about paedophile rings being broken. He might also have an IQ above 30, basic deduction skills, or technical knowledge equivalent to knowing how to program a VCR. The question is why do you feel the need to challenge him when you're so blatantly uninformed?

2) Did you really just ask why we don't need a national filtering system costing millions of dollars in order to stop children seeing porn? There are numerous effective (and even free) solutions out there for parents to use. More importantly, though, the internet is not a child-minding service and this firewall won't make it safe to use it as one. Even if it did stop paedophiles getting child porn it won't stop them grooming kids online and will leave parents with a false sense of security in this regard. If you're worried about what your kids see and do online then try doing your job as a parent. As for what harm implementing this could do, try wiping that government spunk out of your eyes and reading 1984.

6) This filter simply will not stop child porn, and if you genuinely believe it will then I've got a rock I'd like to sell you.

Wow. That's unbelievable.

If there was no way to prevent it I would literally leave the country.

Actually stopping people from circumventing such a filter is literally impossible - if you can use google you can find several very easy to use programs that encrypt all of your internet traffic, making your connection immune from any possible blocking attempts. As usual, this will do nothing but take away more of the people's fundamental rights. I know If i lived in Australia right now, I would be getting very familiar with tor.

Such Bullcrap! its bad enough we have the third worst internet in the world but to put such a stupid system i place is goin' overboard. Kevin Rudd, you have failed EPICALLY!

I wonder how many lives it would save by investing that 125.8 Million into Healthcare instead
or if they fixed the stupid health systems like new facilities etc we might actully praise them.

and yeah, when you have a sister who downloads a ton and broadband (telstra) while dishing out 60$ a month, its going to destroy online gaming here since i'll have to pay 80-100$ JUST to increase speed.

crap! that means I'll need to get a job just for faster internet, as mum will not pay anymore, and if I can pass it off as rent I can get the money from CentreLink, as I will then be eligable for Youth Allowance (or is it something with student in its name..? :-k ) As my friend is doing that, he pays for his internet, he calls it rent, but is only paying for the internet, and gets enough to pay for it (he is an only child, and his parents don't use the internet, so they won't pay for it.)

depends, you cant get youth allowance under 2 rules:

your under 18 and your parents earn too much (my case, even though 90% goes into morgage)

your over 18, outta school and have a job. but usually most people over 18 have a job.

or you could get a girlfriend and knock her up for baby bonus and centerlink to pay out for it fortnightly. (which sadly four teen girls did in wagga wagga, regardless who the father was.)

Oh?

But surely, at the isp level they'd have a lot of ways to find out if such a process is being used, encrypted traffic would show up as suspicious.

But, after the initial slow-down of the filter, a proxy would slow that down ever further.

Encrypted data isn't inherently suspicious - there are a multitude of good reasons to use a secure medium. Simply sending encrypted data, even a lot of it, wouldn't be justification for an investigation.

All my uplodates/downloads for work are encryped. And I can honestly say that I'm probbably sending/receiving close to 200GB of data a month, if encrypted data is suspicious, they would've had a go at me months ago.

When you download music for free you ruin the music industry.

When you download CP for free you support the CP industry.

Makes perfect sense.

Sarcasm aside, I would really hate to see a communication tool as powerful as the internet be tossed aside. Where else can I discuss the pros and cons of highly vulgar subjects without getting my social life absolutely ruined?

That encrypted data might be treated as suspicious after the filter is introduced.

Simply sending encrypted data, even a lot of it, wouldn't be justification for an investigation.

Ah, but you may(in the governments mind) be accessing illegal material(as it would be avoiding the filter), and justify an investigation from that.

I don't think you understand how completely impractical and unrealistic that is.

Firstly there's the question of what exactly they would investigate. They can't obtain a warrant to seize your computer equipment simply on the basis of you using encryption and nothing in the proposals changes that.

Secondly they simply couldn't investigate everyone who uses encryption - it's used far too widely already and this firewall will only drive people to use it more.

Exactly, they'll probably suspect some people more than others though, as in the ones transferring tons of data. By the way, pedophiles use SVN(subversion networks) to transfer data. They're encrypted, or so they appear, are hard to trace, and involve a 200+ character url link to the download.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

High download rates doesn't necessarily mean child porn. That's a terrible way to try and track child porn.

Where do you get this info?

Subversion doesn't support file encryption and the URLs are not particularly long. Also, a subversion repository should be no more difficult to track than anything else.

But, could you put it past the government?

Firstly there's the question of what exactly they would investigate. They can't obtain a warrant to seize your computer equipment simply on the basis of you using encryption and nothing in the proposals changes that.

Ah there could be a system in place, such as the local police take in your hard drive(when you set off alarms at the filter), do a quick investigation etc..

Secondly they simply couldn't investigate everyone who uses encryption - it's used far too widely already and this firewall will only drive people to use it more.

Well, a variety of things can narrow this down.

The number of people that use encryption, the number of people that use encryption in Australia, the number of people that continue to use encryption after the filter is introduced, and finally, the number of people that continue to use it after a government crackdown on it.

Provided people are smart enough, they could set it up with Linux, and pretty much turn it into a open-from-the-inside-only HDD.
