Fallout 3

No topic for this game of the year contender? For shame...

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Fallout game series, the main series consists of RPGs set in a world where 21st century America is a nuclear wasteland following the two hours of nuclear exchange that made up World War 3. Just in case of such a scenario the US government has constructed vaults all over the country. However, by the time the nukes started falling the Boy Who Cried Wolf effect meant that only a fraction of the people who booked themselves a spot in an underground vault actually made it inside, which is just as well since vault capacity was nowhere near what was needed to protect the entire population.

The game starts in Vault 101, buried deep under the irradiated wasteland that once was Washington DC, in the year 2277, 36 years following the events of Fallout 2. Even though this vault was never meant to open you wake up one day to find your father gone, and you're left with no option but to venture out into the unfamiliar wasteland to find him.

The game itself is based on the SPECIAL system (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck). These stats are fixed at the start of the game (except for optional surgeries and stuff like that) and pretty much control everything. Besides that you have combat and non-combat skills such as small arms, unarmed, speech and science that allow you to approach every mission with very varying tactics.

Well if it was actually a GOTY competitor people would prob care. Sorry I think it looks like Oblivion with guns and its gonna be stupid tedious.

And you know as well as I do the only games that will get GOTY are stupidly over hyped gears 2 and GTAIV

Never played the game, but the E3 showing of it sold it for me. I think it looks great, I like the way gameplay seems to go, and it reminds me of Bioshock in terms of humour.

It's at least got a little bit of a chance.

And it's looking pretty good. I'll definitely be picking it up.

Cool.

But my point is it doesn't because its fans that vote .. Alot more people will vote for higher known games like GTAIV / Gears 2 / Fable 2 Etc.

Ehrm, as far as I know, the IGN and Gamespot awards are picked by the editors, not by the fans. Same for pretty much every other award listed there. Just because it's an RPG made by Bethesda doesn't mean it's like the other RPG made by Bethesda, only with guns. The Fallout setting and SPECIAL system have been around for more than ten years and developed completely independently from the Elder Scrolls games.

In other news, based on the amount of points on my customer card, the local game shop has upgraded my pre-order to a limited edition \'

I generally like RPGs but hated oblivion so slow and tedious. Seen as this game is both an RPG and a FPS, and looks much faster paced I mgiht give it a go.

You know, this game is going to be like Oblivion, but with guns!

Seriously looking forward to this game, I would get the Survival Edition of this but it isn't available in the UK.

I enjoyed Fallout 1+2, but thought they were too dated and lacked a few too many necessary features. When I heard of this I was sort of excited, but Oblivion was pretty weak.

I kinda want to play this right when it comes out to get a first impression before I'm influenced by other opinions. But at the same time, I'm not sure I'll have the time when it comes out. I might have to wait until the Christmas break.

i'm gonna have to disagree with you about oblivion, i could speak volumes about it, but this isn't the place. if fallout 3 is anything like oblivion (although different too) i'm sold, just gotta get the money.

I was just bringing up old memories with fallout 2: restoration project - ah, golden game. I really hope Bethesda creates fallout like fallout 3. Oblivion was impressing, they did not hesitate to add some wicked contest in that game (dark brotherhood, lighthouse basement level).

What exactly does the limited edition (AKA Survival Edition?) have extra, and what is the price difference? I'm always willing to spend an extra $10 for limited editions of games.

The standard edition just has the game.

The collector's edition has the game, a bonus DVD, concept art book, the vault boy bobblehead, and a lunch box.

The survival edition has all the things the collector's edition has, and a PIP-Boy 3000 clock.

The UK limited edition has the game and a power armor figurine.

And Europe got neither :(

Regarding Power Armour, I just read that you need to take a perk in order to wear it. I think this is a really elegant way to balance the item, depending on the requirements needed to take the perk.

the reviews don't really think it's that good, any americans who can backup this statement?

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/metar ... -xbox-360/

* 1UP (A): "Faults be damned, though; this is the kind of hugely ambitious game that doesn't come around very often, and when it does, you'd be a fool not to play it and enjoy the hell out of it and look forward to the day (next-next-gen?) when the fidelity of open-world RPGs takes another big step closer to the uncanny valley's far side."

* Eurogamer (100/100): "Despite so many worries, Fallout 3 almost effortlessly succeeds in its central aim of reviving a much-loved brand to appeal to the vast majority of players. It's a thrilling, all-consuming experience that will absorb you for weeks, whether you're attracted by the action, the adventure, or the role-playing, as you fall in love with the relentless excitement, incredible atmosphere, sense of place and sheer choice."

* Worth Playing (95/100): "In the end, Fallout 3 feels like a Fallout game, and that is absolutely the highest compliment. Despite the changes, much of the charm and fun of the franchise remains intact, and despite the similarities to Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, I never felt that I was playing anything but a Fallout game."

* Giant Bomb (80/100): "It's unfortunate that Fallout 3 is saddled with so many little- and medium-sized issues, because they get in the way of what's an otherwise fantastic experience. The world is well-realized and full of options. It'll be a struggle in spots, but I'm willing to guess that most people will be able to overlook a lot of the game's problems and still have a very good time exploring the irradiated wasteland formerly known as Washington DC."
