APPCRASH.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a slight problem.

I open my Firefox browser and get onto the RuneScape website.

I click on the button labeled "Free Users - Click Here To Play".

2/3 times, the page shows that it is loading, and then it stops. All I see is a black screen within the browser. I close the browser (or sometimes I'll minimize it and it closes down by itself for some reason) in hopes of starting over and entering RuneScape again, and then I get this message:

[hide=]10456528yy0.png

(Same window, I just scrolled down a little on the second image.)[/hide]

What's an 'APPCRASH' / the problem? :? :(

Not entirely sure what this is but the following might help:

  • [*:2dj0i68e]Reinstalling Firefox

    [*:2dj0i68e]Reinstalling Java

    [*:2dj0i68e]Updating your graphics drivers

    [*:2dj0i68e]Defragmenting your hard drive

[*:2dj0i68e]Trying another browser, such as IE, and seeing if the problem persists

If these don't work, some system specs would be useful to help solve the problem.

See if Java is enabled, that might be the problem.

pinkbullet3, are you using the ABP (AdBlock Plus) extension? :-s

If not, disregard the following questions. :ugeek:

However, if you are, is any of the filters killing the applet's loading sequence? Or is it possible that you don't have a needed filter in place, and that is killing the browser due to some bad content incoming alongside the Java App, which would then prevent your being able to play RuneScape? :geek:

(p.s.: I use ABP myself, and can help fix some issues with that...)

I think it might be ABP, but for some reason, when I click on the big "Click Here To Play" button in Windows IE, the entire browser just closes down without notice.

I have a feeling that the problem has to do with Java. I reinstalled Firefox 2.0 (which I'm more comfortable with than 3; when I downloaded 3, it kept randomly crashing on me), and now I'm going to see what happens.

Edit: Ok, same thing happened with Firefox. I got into http://www.runescape.com, and then right when I clicked on the "Free Users - Click Here To Play," the whole browser shut down. :x

Okay, since you've tried FF2 and IE, and are having the same problems, I can rule out both of your browsers (and therefore ABP also) as being at fault... Anywho, onto the next question... What version of Java are you currently using? And is there anything that could have happened recently to break or cause a fault in your Java version? TBH, you may be right, and do need to just simply reinstall Java... :geek:

(Off-Topic: If you wish to have a set of ABP filters for the RuneScape pages that cut off anything bad hitting you while you're at RuneScape's website, feel free to ask. I'll be glad to post them up. :) ...)

I reinstalled Java 6 Update 10 today. Now when I click "Free Users - Click Here To Play," I see the normal tab bar that sits above the playing window... and then everything in the browser turns black. :x
Have you rebooted since the installation of Java 6u10? Also, did you try running antivirus scans? (I've actually heard of viruses that are able to hide while Java is installed... Further, they will keep breaking Java until you remove it, remove the virus, and then put Java back in after. I'd like to think this isn't the case, but who knows...) And lastly, a question you didn't answer earlier... Was there any key event that happened prior to Java breaking like this? Usually, this does not happen unless there's been some connecting event. :?

Do you have the ImageShack Toolbar installed?

It makes your browser (FireFox at least, in my case) crash when it tries to load Java.

Sounds like an extension that people should be staying away from... :|

No.

Yes.

Yes. I ran avast! Antivirus (cba to 'buy' one; and Norton is really complicated and slow from what I've seen on my parents' computers) and after it finished its 40 minute search, it came up with nothing.

I don't quite remember. What I've mentioned in the original post has been happening since the middle-end of October. It was this past week end when it started acting up on me.

Hopefully when all this problem is resolved, we can get RuneScape and Java to behave normally WITH Adblock Plus in Firefox.

I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS: RuneScape works in Windows Internet Explorer! \'

I have figured out a couple things:

- Java 6 Update 10 works, since RS is running in Windows IE. I would like it more if it worked in Firefox, since that browser seems safer than IE.

- ABP is not the culprit, although we will have to resolve some issues between it and RS's page loading system.

- I DO have Tip.it's tabbed add-on, though I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this.

- Now I'm down to Firefox itself. I have version 2.0, and I will upgrade to 3.0 if I must. I'll try anything you guys recommend after this post.

Thanks for taking the time to help, though, D_V and everyone else! :D

You tried firefox in Safe Mode right?

Start > Programs > Mozilla Firefox > Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode).

Check the "disable add-ons" box when you run it in safe mode, this will determine if anything in the extensions is to blame. If it doesn't work, I suppose you can try checking all the boxes and then seeing if that works.

It works! :) I'm going to wait for further advice before doing anything else in order to further inspect the problem. I'll just play on Safe Mode for now.

Thanks!

You HAVE the Tip.It MicroHelper? Damn... That's what's been [bleep]ing you up this whole time! That stupid thing has SERIOUS issues versus Java!!! :wall:

I got five words for you as to how to handle it: UNINSTALL THE [bLEEP]ING TIP.IT MICROHELPER!!! :x

Put simply, anything that blows up Java while you're doing something you want to do, is something that doesn't belong on your PC... Getting rid of it is your only recourse... In this case, the Tip.It Microhelper is the problem, so it must die... :ugeek: ....... BTW, if you want to see what I mean before you totally delete the thing, disable it first and try things out without it in the way. (Unless the Tip.It Microhelper is coded as bad as another add-on that I know, then disabling it should shut that add-on down completely.)

Also, I recommend keeping Tip.It's Website handy in a seperate window from now on, because I know Errdoth hasn't worked out all the bugs in his bloody add-on. Until he does, I seriously recommend that you do not use it. -.-

This is a semi-easy fix, and since you already know how to add filters, this will be a snap. Add every line in the hidden section below into ABP's listing...

i do believe blocking runescape ads is against the rules, so unless i'm misunderstanding adblock plus, you probably wanna remove those filters you just added.

Effective date: 27th February 2008

You must not deliberately block or hide the adverts which appear above the free version of our game. If you have advert blocking software please prevent it from blocking adverts on our website. The adverts above the free game are what enable us to keep it free, after all!

i'd assume that means website advertisements too.

#1 they can ban you for it if they knew, doesn't matter that it's your pc, it's their site, if you are using your pc to access their site, you follow their rules. that's reminds me of someone walking into a store with a clearly written "no shirt no shoes no service" policy. if you walk in without a shirt, it is their right to kick you out. it is your body/mind/choice/whatever to not wear a shirt, but when you go on their property, it doesn't matter.

#2 yes, i'm sure jagex has had some bad ads, namely i think some cursor one was bad if i recall. any site with advertising will have that, unless they prescreen/make their own adverts.

#3 i do not do any advert blocking at all. i have never gotten a virus from an ad. granted no, i don't play the free version of the game, so i don't see ads all the time. that doesn't give you any right what you decide to do with their money. the ads are their form of money from you f2p people. by blocking their ads, you are blocking their money. how do you think any proper business would take that? no matter what you say, it's against their rules and not allowed.

When you sit here and go off on my friend that he is a bad coder then i have problems with you. I seriously doubt you could do any better than what he did. In fact i would be surprised to see if you even code and if you do it is pry a slop of [cabbage]. Also do you have to freak out over nothing because i can tell you several thousand people have pry downloaded the addon and i have only seen this issue. Have you personally ever made a Firefox addon or worked with them? The Microhelper is just an xul overlay with javascript. If you don't know that i can't help you anymore. To be honest with you i am really tired of your [cabbage] and how you always over react to everything and make it the worst situation. I think it is best your shut your [bleep] mouth(quit typing [cabbage]) before you get even more hatred from every one in this community.

Errdoth's also mailed me about this... Which, BTW, I wasn't trying to go off on him... I was recalling what I'd heard early on about what happened when interacting with a Java applet... I've mailed him back and will be giving the Microhelper a try in a few moments... Just installed the add-on. :|

I'm really surprised that malware can compromise extensions, BTW. :o

Okay... Errdoth's "Tip.It MicroHelper" add-on is working beautifully here. Therefore, sloter, I apologize to you. (I've already sent my apologies to Errdoth as well, BTW...) TBH, I'm glad that it works well, because I don't like nay-saying nice stuff. :geek:

That reminds me... I've sent Errdoth some suggestions about the MicroHelper. If he integrates them, I bet we can expect a big announcement from the Admins.

@ E.M.R. --- And what about all those poor kids (which I estimate compose at least 1/4th of the free players... and even though I'm age 25, belong to that group) whose parents have anti-advert policies??? Do we just up and ban them too??? :o ... (BTW, a website is NOT the same as a IRL store... So I find your analogy to not be so workable, in this instance. Sorry.)

@ Pinkbullet3 --- How's the fixing on the ABP filters coming, as per my earlier post?!?!? If needs be, I'll post up some screenshots or something. :-s ... (Maybe it is time I need to develop that filterlist file to import... :-k ...)

the solution at age 25? move out. get a job. the solution for everyone else, and you once they do find out, or if i'm wrong i'll glad post that i'm wrong (i'll be sending a query about this) is appeal it telling them about your parental policies, they'll still most likely ask you to remove the filter. it's basically taking money away from the company. so, i'll post the answer to my query to jagex about this, and i'll let you know the answer. (just because it's online, doesn't mean it's not taking money from a business)

You are evil, aren't you? Jagex will only be so dumb as to ban if they want to lose possible customers. (BTW, that group would obviously include anyone who can introduce possible customers to the game.) :shame:

I wonder, being that there are children, teens, and young adults who can't use PCs unless they follow their Parents'/School's/Workplace's/ISP's anti-advert policies about those PCs... How much would F2P shrink, which would equally hurt P2P's in-game market rather harshly, if a whole bunch of people were lost because Jagex couldn't understand their adverts being blocked for safety/security/parental reasons? Maybe 25% minimum, or possibly more like half of F2P? Or more??? Yeah, I'm sure you'd hate to see TET's events get kinda small because something like that happened. :ugeek:

You seem to have forgotten that the adverts on F2P servers pay for your place on the server.

JaGEx's rules are our rules; if they say they don't want people blocking adverts then I'll have no more discussion on the matter.

Stop the arguing as well. Let's focus on how to solve the original problem please.
