A question for fellow athiests

Im indiferent, I really think its up to every person to decide if it would be considered greed if God wished for everyone to worship him. On one side it is the arguement that if he wants EVERYONE to follow him and do what he wants then obviously he is greedy. The other arguement that Astralinre is holding up is that if he created the universed he deserves the worship and doing so will result in your personnal gain. Both good arguements but it obviously depends if you beleive in God or not. Because if you dont then all you would see is a nonexistant being asking for every existing being's worship. If you do beleive in him you would find it reasonable that something that created you and everything recieve your worship. Which is why I dont think *most* atheists cant understand Astralinre's point. Please note that when I say him it is reffering to God, I simply use this because it sounds better than it. Also note I am an atheist, my views on this topic are a few posts up.

I can understand what Astralinre is talking about, but that would still mean god is greedy. Those with power seek to use it, and dislike it when they cannot use power to make fear. Im going to use a small example. At Aircadets, there is ranks. Well in the ranks there is some corruption. This is becuase there are those you wish to use their rank's power to do stuff for themselves, and if the respect is not given to that rank, they can be very angry. I know there are those that do not care, and just let others do as they please, and only use their power when necisary.

What his point is that because if he existed then his powers would overide this I think seing as he made it. An example would be if you bought a cat or any pet it would'nt be greedy to wish for them to do what you wanted, like I said being an atheist aswell I cannot fully grasp what he is saying.

BTW, if your an atheist, you should definitly be following gramaticl rules and be calling god it, and not giving 'god' a capitla G.

To Jackalope:

I have been thinking for about a week, and have come up with a lopehole in the thing you said about my theory with the first comendment.

Well, you said that god is greedy, yet it can be greedy if it wants too. But how would that work?

Greed is a sin, no? well if it is, that means that it isnt part of being perfect. And we were made in the form of god, perfect. But didnt we fall short of perfection just for sinning, and having free will? So if god is perfect, and greed is a sin, wich isnt part of being perfect, wouldnt that mean it wouldnt be not a sin to be greedy? because god is perfect, and we are made in the eyes of it, and god is greedy.

You see its a very large and complicated loophole.

Sorry, but since when is God greedy?

Im pretty sure their reffering to him wanting everyones worship and not wishing anyone to worship a "false" god.

Ok, thanks. Now the reference to the first commandment makes sense. :)

The Biblical God is not greedy for commanding us to worship Him alone, as it is for our happiness and His glory that he does so. I believe that those two things are not at odds, but rather that they are the same.

I've got to go to dinner, but when I get back I'll back up that statement.

Psalms 100: 2 "Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs."

I seem to have lost my notes on the subject, but John Piper has said many times "God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Plato teach that man should find truth and comform himself to it, and that brought true happiness? Maybe that was Aristotle, but I forget. Whether they taught that or not is beside the point - it's what I believe.

In Christianity, God is truth ("I am the way, the Truth, and the life."), so in order to find happiness, you must comform yourself to God by worshipping Him. He wants your to worship Him not because He's greedy, but because He deserves your worship and worshipping Him is what's best for you.

That confirms what I thought your point was, and indeed it is a good one, yet it just further proves my point that those who believe in god will have your view and those whom dont will not be able to understand them, for the most part.

Ya i think you right cause i cant get it, wouldnt that still make god greedy for power and respect?

From most atheists point of view yes that would be considered greed, but like stated in my and astralinre's post those that believe in god believe that because it was he that made all he also has the truth to all and that worshiping and following him results in perssonal gain. If you read our posts again you may see astralinre's point of view, not to say you'd agree with it but atleast see where he's coming from.

I don't really see what you're trying to debate, i'm sorry, but i really don't. I read your posts and i don't see a connection. If you're trying to argue that God is greedy, there is no reference in the Bible where it states that God is greedy. God is a "jealous" God, if that's what you're trying to say. I believe you have the two confused.

In that post im not debating, im just saying im confused because all i can see is that god is jealous.

Also from your post, your now saying that god is jealous? jealouse of what? I thought christians thought there was only one god? so why would it need to be jealouse.

Well the coversation started about the first commanment. I just explained the reason behind it, hence God is jealous and He wants everybody to worship Him.

Edit: Also, It read that "You shall have no other gods before me"

This just doesn't apply just to another god, but anything that you put before Him. RS can be your god (not neccesarilly saying you, but just as an example), TV, Porno, anything that you put before Him. Money, Love, etc....

Yes, we all do. I will admit, i've done it several times and will probably do it again. Just goes the saying, "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven"

And i'm glad i can help clear some stuff up Lionheart_0

BTW, if your an atheist, you should definitly be following gramaticl rules and be calling god it, and not giving 'god' a capitla G.
How do you figure?

The Christian god, God, is a proper noun whether you believe in (s)he / it or not. And so are all the other names for (s)he / it [ Read more ] depending on the religion that is making reference to (s)he / it.

Although if you're writing 'god' in a stituation such like:

In the due chance that there is a god or higher diety ...

Then using a capitol G is wrong since it is not a proper noun in that context.

Not is a proper noun in situations such as:

- Christian god

- Hebrew god

- Jewish god

And such reference using a religion as a prefix before the term 'god'.

What his point is that because if he existed then his powers would overide this I think seing as he made it. An example would be if you bought a cat or any pet it would'nt be greedy to wish for them to do what you wanted, like I said being an atheist aswell I cannot fully grasp what he is saying.

Is there a difference between grammar and spelling or is it all lumped under grammar?

And Nvm mind about that ... is a grammical error. Since the expanded form is actually Nevermind mind about that ...

Anything else?
