Dragonkin Awakened

Introduction

About 2 years ago when I first did A Tail of Two Cats, I watched the cut-scene where Robert the Strong fought a Dragonkin with little regard for its significance. I didn't think it was important. For a long time I seemed to be right. The Dragonkin were nowhere to be found in RuneScape, no sightings anywhere besides the cut-scene, no records of them in any book besides the one from the quest. It seemed like Dragonkin were forgotten by Jagex. They weren't! Over the course of the next 2 years, more references came to light. They weren't big. Just a ghost of a hint in a Postbag, a cryptic riddle put forward by the KBD. Then the Ancient Cavern was released. My interest was piqued. Of all the possible reasons for the Ancient Cavern's existence, the one I suspected the least was the Dragonkin, the forgotten race of RuneScape. I did a search of the RuneScape Knowledge Base for the Dragonkin, but got no results, except Postbags from the Hedge. I read them all, and the Dragonkin seemed even more interesting to me. The mysterious race seemed to have vanished without a trace, yet marks of their existence were left all over the land. Those marks were overlooked by many, including me, for the longest time. But I felt it was time to try to clear things up about this ancient race.

I compiled all the facts I knew about them in one place, this thread, and asked people for their thoughts. The response I got was incredible. With the help of all the TIFers here, we made several astounding discoveries about Dragonkin. It quickly became apparent that the Dragonkin had far from disappeared without a trace. Their influence went far deeper than I ever suspected, and connections between the Kin and an incomprehensibly ancient artifact of awesome power emerged. This thread is very long. I know because I wrote it! But I like to think that the research compiled here is interesting enough to make you want to read it all. As much research as I did, this thread wouldn't be half what it is today were it not for my fellow TIFers, whose combined interest in the Dragonkin was enough to reveal that the Dragonkin once held the Stone of Jas weeks before it was made public knowledge by the grandmaster quest, While Guthix Sleeps. There's more to the Dragonkin however, its possible that they are more entrenched in the history of Gielinor than we could ever suspect, and I can't wait until we discover the next piece of this puzzle.

Basic Information

Physical Characteristics

To my knowledge, the first ever description of the Dragonkin was put forth by Reldo, the Varrock Palace Librarian, during the quest A Tail of Two Cats. Here is the conversation with Reldo in which Dragonkin were first mentioned:

[hide=Conversation with Reldo]Reldo: Hello.

Me: Hello Reldo.

Cat: Go on, ask him.

Me: Ok, ok, I'm on it.

Me: Do you know anything about Robert the Strong?

Reldo: Hmm... wow... let me see... there is a mention of him in one of my books on the history of RuneScape.

Reldo: First Age... Popular Lore... Ah here we are, Robert the Strong! 'Not much is known about the hero called by the people of Asgarnia: Robert the Strong. Most folk tales describe him as being taller than the tallest human

Reldo: and far stronger than the strongest man. He wields a six foot tall longbow and travels with his faithful partner Odysseus. He is said to have had a personal crusade against the Dragonkin...'

Me: Dragonkin?

Reldo: I'm coming to that. 'The stories tell of the Dragonkin being an intelligent race of bird like creatures that walked rather than used their wings. They are said to be immortal but cannot reproduce, because of this they

Reldo: became very afraid of death and shunned all other races. The Dragonkin made corrupted versions of themselves for protection, what we now know as dragons.'

Reldo: Well that's everything we know about him and that is from folk tales.

Me: Doesn't sound very believable.

Reldo: Very little is known about this early part of RuneScape, but unlike many scholars, I believe that folk tales are based on events that actually happened. It is the way history has been passed down generations before we had

Reldo: a way of recording it.

Me: Thank you Reldo, you've been most... helpful.

Me: That was a nice tale for mothers to tell their children but I don't see how this helps Bob?

Cat: Don't you think its odd that no one knows where Bob came from?

Me: I guess, but he's just a cat... right?

Cat: I hoped you would've realized that there's more to cats than humans believe!

Me: Ok, ok! I get your point, after all I'm being dragged round RuneScape by.. my cat!

Cat: I wouldn't say dragged, let's call it a partnership!

Me: Ok!

Me: So you are saying that Robert the Strong is... is...

Me: Bob?!

Cat: Let's ask Bob!

Me: Let's go![/hide]

The most important part of that conversation is the passage from Reldo's book about the 1st age.

Not much is known about the hero called by the people of Asgarnia: Robert the Strong. Most folk tales describe him as being taller than the tallest human and far stronger than the strongest man. He wields a six foot tall longbow and travels with his faithful partner Odysseus. He is said to have had a personal crusade against the Dragonkin.

The stories tell of the Dragonkin being an intelligent race of bird like creatures that walked rather than used their wings. They are said to be immortal but cannot reproduce, because of this they became very afraid of death and shunned all other races. The Dragonkin made corrupted versions of themselves for protection, what we now know as dragons.

From this we get a basic description of the Dragonkin, that they resemble birds, had wings but did not use them, and that they created dragons to serve as bodyguards. They needed bodyguards because, while they can never die of old age, they can be slain in combat. This is a much bigger tragedy to the Dragonkin than to other races because they cannot reproduce to replace their fallen brethren.

Despite Reldo's book being about the First Age, The events shown in the cut-scene probably took place in the 4th age, instead of the 1st. The first reason for this is this exhibit from the Varrock Museum putting the events in the Fourth Age:

zwn8np.jpg

More evidence of this was found by Kietaro1, who read this article from the Knowledge base and found this passage:

Many legends, tales and poems exist from this time and tell of the exploits of many heroes such as Robert the Strong and Arrav of Avarrocka.

Because of these conflicting sources, it seems apparent that either Reldo's book is wrong or that Jagex changed their minds about the event's time but did not update that particular book's title.

The first Dragonkin seen in-game was during a cut-scene in a Tail of Two Cats. Here is an altered version of a screenshot originally posted by Da_Latios:

149az3n.jpg

We can see that the dragonkin stand no less than 10 feet tall, have membranous wings, like bats rather than birds, and have a beak. They strongly resemble vultures, in the way they stand, and especially the way they bend their necks. Here is the cut-scene in which the Dragonkin first appeared:

WjAW0puktII

If your connection is slow or you just don't want to watch it, I have the transcript of the cut-scene here.

[hide=Cut scene transcript]Sphinx: Quiet please, I shall summon Bob.

Bob: What? What happened?

Bob: I was eating a particularly nice piece of tuna.

Sphinx: Greetings Bob.

Bob: Oh, hi there Sphinx.

Bob: Hi there [player]. What's going on?

Sphinx: I have brought you here to find out who you really are.

Bob: So, you buy this Robert the Strong stuff?

Sphinx: I have long suspected that your appearance as an ordinary cat belies your true nature.

Bob: Hey! I'm just this cat, you know?

Sphinx: Look into my eyes.

Bob: Sure whatever.

Sphinx: You are now under my influence.

Sphinx: Let's start with something simple. What is your name?

Bob: My name is Bob.

Sphinx: Good. Are you or have you ever been called Robert the Strong?

Bob: I...I don't know

Sphinx: Think back to your earliest memories.

Bob: I see a big cat.

Sphinx: Where are you now?

Bob: I am in front of a dark tower. The cat is called Odysseus.

Sphinx: What is your name?

Bob: My name is Robert.

Bob: I am walking towards the tower.

[A flashback begins, showing a single dragonkin atop a castle. The dragonkin walks to the front of the castle and sees Robert the Strong and Odysseus standing at the front gate.]

Robert: Come Odysseus!

[Robert and Odysseus walk into the castle through the front gate. The dragonkin still

watching from the top floor walks downstairs to confront Robert.]

Dragonkin: Hesente!

[The dragonkin and Robert meet and begin fighting. Odysseus' health is reduced to 0 by dragon breath from the dragonkin but his body does not disappear. Robert is nearly killed by its magical attacks and falls to the ground.]

Dragonkin: Crasortius!

Robert: Never!

[Robert gets up and lands a final blow on the dragonkin reducing the dragonkin's hp bar to 0. The dragonkin is shown flinching, but is not shown dying. The flashback ends.]

Sphinx: You are no longer under my influence.

Cat: Wow Bob! You really are Robert the Strong!

Bob: I am?

Cat: Yes! When you were hypnotized you told us of when you defeated a dragonkin!

Bob: I did?

Cat: Yes! How can Neite refuse you now?

Bob: Really?

Cat: Sphinx, summon Neite, please!

Sphinx: There are more important matters than match making.

Cat: That can wait, Bob has been lovesick, so we have to tell Neite.

Sphinx: Very well! I shall summon Neite!

Neite: Oh furballs!

Cat: Hi, Neite!

Neite: Hello, to what do I owe this pleasure?

Cat: Bob is Robert the Strong!

Neite: What are you talking about?

Cat: The Sphinx hypnotized Bob. Bob told us about when he was Robert the Strong, fighting dragonkin.

Neite: So you're supposed to be Robert the Strong?

Bob: So they tell me.

Neite: Hmph.

Sphinx: For too long I have ignored the fact that there is a mark of power on Bob. Under my influence Bob was able to recall memories that had remained hidden until now. It proves he is, or was, Robert the Strong.

Neite: Wow.

Neite: Come here, you.

[Neite whispers in Bob's ear.]

Bob: Neite!

Bob: Of course, kitten.

Bob: Hey, [player], could you do me a favor?

Me: Of course!

Bob: Neite and I are going to go away for a few days. Could you look after Unferth for me while I'm away?

Me: Er... sure.

Bob: I'll give you a list of what needs doing.

Me: OK, no problem Bob.[/hide]

From this, we learn some basic combat stats about the Dragonkin. They are formidable warriors who appear to attack with magic, and, interestingly, a dragon-breath attack. While this is not surprising, seeing how they created dragons, it is interesting nonetheless. Something to notice: not only is this one Dragonkin, and therefore not necessarily a representative of the entire race, this battle was said to have taken place in the 1st age; millenia ago. As such, it is likely that Dragonkin, were they to be found today, would not be the same as this one.

Dragonkin Combat Information:

Examine - Creator of Dragons

Hitpoints - 242

Max hit shown - 32

Attacks - Dragon-breath and a magic attack that looks like fire wave but hits much higher

More basic information about the Dragonkin came along years later in the quest While Guthix Sleeps, from the cunning archeologist Movario.

The passage from his notes serves to further the mysteriousness surrounding the Dragonkin; from the sounds of things, they rarely leave survivors when they come across others. It also shows that the Dragonkin "pre-date most things", probably even the arrival of humans on Gielinor. The passage also references dragon weapons and the Dragonkin key, both of which are covered further below.

The Dragonkin's True Name

It seems odd that the dragonkin would be named after something THEY created. Dragonkin is a composite of two words, dragon and kin (which means family or relative). Why would the Dragonkin call themselves that before they even made the dragons? There must be a more formal name for them, much like RuneScape's formal name is Gielinor. Talking to Fairy Aeryka, the fairy wandering around the entrance to the Impling Minigame in Zanaris, gives a hint as to what that true name is:

Dragonkin are the creators of dragon weapons (see below), so the word she uses, Necrosyrtes, would appear to be another name for the Dragonkin. Necrosyrtes is a genus of vultures, and the only species in the Necrosyrtes genus is the Hooded Vulture. Dragonkin look extremely similar to vultures, so it is entirely possible that Necrosyrtes is the true name for the Dragonkin

Another possible name for dragonkin is "Elder Dragons", as found by runecid11:

dragonkininfo170203hj9.png

Like the Dragonkin, Elder dragons were said to have been around since before the first age, possibly long before then. The way the passage describes them, elder dragons were supposed to be extremely powerful, much like the Dragonkin. Other than this, there is little evidence linking the Dragonkin to Elder dragons.

The Dragonkin Symbol

The following screenshot was posted by Hippodo the washed up historian who smells funny, even though he admits he didn't take it (plagiarist!). This bas relief sculpture is found in the spirit realm, after using the portal next to the ruined castle in the north-east wilderness.

halfstoneofjaspz6.png

The same 8-pointed star pattern is also present in their castle from the cutscene. Take a second look.

149az3n.jpg

TheLeonardo was the first one to notice this, and it was an extremely good find. Because of him, we figured out that this is the Dragonkin symbol before it was officially confirmed in the first grandmaster quest, While Guthix Sleeps, in which you can see the Dragonkin discussing the recent events somewhere hidden, standing atop this very symbol.

[hide=Large image]91exlk.jpg[/hide]

Now that the symbol is confirmed to be the Dragonkin symbol, its time to interpret it. The right side of the symbol is half of an 8 pointed star. This star is made of 2 different sized 4-pointed stars. Incidentally enough, the Saradomin symbol is a 4 pointed star, yet no known connections between them and the dragonkin exist. The left half of the image, however, is unmistakably the Stone of Jas, seen below.

28lam1w.jpg

The Stone of Jas has the same pattern as is shown on the symbol. Also, the pattern on the Stone of Jas occupies half the sphere, and on the Dragonkin symbol, the pattern covers half the circle. The connections between the Dragonkin and the Stone of Jas are extremely interesting and will be explored thoroughly in a later section.

Dragonkin Locations

No one knows where the Dragonkin are. When they failed to kill humans, they shunned themselves from all other races and hide somewhere far away from prying eyes. There are clues, however, to their current location, hidden all over the place.

The Dragonkin Castle

This is the castle where the Dragonkin are first seen. There is no indication of where this castle is, however similarities exist between it and Castle Drakan in Morytania. Thanks to Da_Latios for this great image!

[hide=Large, high resolution image]i6027a.jpg[/hide]

The Current Lair

In While Guthix Sleeps, we get a glimpse of the current hideout of the Dragonkin. There are no indications of where it might be, there is only a room covered with the 8 pointed star of the Dragonkin, as well as the Dragonkin Symbol.

[hide=Large, high resolution image]nyzfc3.jpg[/hide]

Is it possible that the Dragonkin are still in the castle where they first appeared in Tail of Two Cats?

Castle Drakan

The castle in the cut-scene looks very similar to Castle Drakan in Morytania. Here's a side-by-side, or um... top-by-bottom... comparison between the two castles:

[hide=Dragonkin castle]11vh6wz.jpg[/hide]

[hide=Castle Drakan]352kv2d.jpg[/hide]

You can definitely see some similarities. First of all they seem to be made of the exact same stone. The roofs of the castles are both lined by a fence made of lethal looking [bleep]es. Further similarities come from this wallpaper image from the Downloads Section, found by zaaps1:

[hide=Castle Drakan Wallpaper]21l1mok.jpg

Note: Wallpaper image copyright © 1999 - 2008 Jagex Ltd.[/hide]

This image shows the upper levels of the castle which are very difficult to see in-game, and they clearly show a ribbing pattern that is identical to that shown in the Dragonkin castle! A great find!

In order for the Dragonkin to have had anything to do with this castle, however, it could not have been built by Lord Drakan. He would have to have taken control of it. I was hoping to find some evidence of this, so I looked in the lores section of the Knowledge Base. I didn't find anything, so I went to the book case in my player owned house and pulled all the books that sounded like the might be about Morytania. I didn't expect to find anything, but I did.

This book is called Histories of the Hallowland, yet the book in your inventory says "Battered Tome". You get it in the Salve Temple library, Drezel will give you the necessary key, assuming you've reached a certain point in "In Aid of Myreque". The passage of interest starts with "Let us begin..." and ends with "...true record of this."

[hide=Passage from a book describing Castle Drakan]dra6u.jpg

dnbjv8.jpg

ip035w.jpg

33x9ctw.jpg[/hide]

I was very surprised to find this, and its extremely interesting to me. It proves that Lord Drakan did NOT build Castle Drakan, he simply invaded it and claimed it as his own. Even more interesting is the rumor of a large city underneath Castle Drakan. While reading this I immediately formed a theory. This castle, and the city underneath it, is the original stronghold of the Dragonkin. When they ran away and sealed themselves away from the world, they left it, empty and abandoned. After they left it, it was used by various rulers of Morytania most famously Queen Efaritay, an Icyene, who was deposed and imprisoned by Lord Drakan.

[hide=In depth history about Queen Efaritay by Hippodo]

The Icyene were a race of winged humanoid creatures, which [possibly] came from the Eastern Lands. They were good, and were friendly rulers of Hallowvale. As the age of an Icyene is unknown (we don't even know they die of old age at all, like vampyres) it could be that Queen Efaritay was the kingdom's ruler together with King Ascertes from the beginning till the end. It has been calculated they've ruled for at least some 820 years. When lord Drakan invaded Hallowvale, Efaritay fought him valiantly, until Drakan took Ascertes hostage and forced her into submission. It is unknown what became of them. Queen Efaritay and Safalaan (the leader of the Sanguinesti Myreque) share the same last name, Hallow, and together with his height, unusual blue eyes and weird powerblast-vyrewatch-emergency-mechanism it is speculated he is related to her. Also, there exists a theory of the Vyrewatch being corrupted Icyene, as they're similar in appearance. As said before, Commander Zilyana is an Icyene, and both the Godsword blade and Saradomin Sword were made by them.

The Ruined Castle in the North Eastern Wilderness

There is strong evidence linking the Dragonkin to a mysterious ruined castle in deep in the wilderness. The following screenshots are compliments of Brainite3:

34q4ais.jpg

These screenshots were taken in the spirit realm, which is only accessible after completing Summer's End. The Dragonkin symbol appears all over this castle, which strongly supports the theory that the Dragonkin once resided here. Because of how the spirit realm works, the fact that Dragonkin symbols are there means that there WERE Dragonkin symbols in the real world but they were taken down or fell apart.

This castle has an L shape to it, but the castle in the cut-scene has a T or + shape. That doesn't mean, however, that the castles aren't the same, as pointed out by Aurian:

I think the Dragonkins castle is most likely to be in the NE Wilderness. The spirit realm up there shows their symbols, and yes it doesnt look like the cut scene one...

But.. Who is to say that the castle hasn't sort of fallen into the sea? We can only see what looks like one corner on the map. I can easily imagine that being x4 to make a square/whatever in the past.

Further evidence of the Dragonkin's involvement in this castle is provided by Movario's notes from While Guthix Sleeps:

2hdmrsh.jpg

The "suspected artefacts that he talks about are mentioned in the section about dragon weapons.

The East

This excerpt from Movario's Notes already shown once provides evidence linking the Dragonkin to "the east".

5mi8f9.jpg

2ck37q.jpg

I overlooked the phrase with question, but Unknwnwrrior picked up on it. Dose this mean they're from the mysterious land East of Morytania? Does it finally prove that the Dragonkin were from Morytania? Or does it simply refer to the ruined Dragonkin castle in the North-East wilderness? The description is very vague and could mean anything, yet its interesting to think that they may be from the Eastern Lands.

The Ancient Cavern

The Dragonkin are somehow related to the Ancient Cavern underneath Baxtorian Lake. Whether they simply moved into this place, or if they themselves created it is currently unknown, however most evidence points to the latter. Much of the evidence comes from Ancient Pages, dropped by most monsters in the dungeon, which are copied into a log, called My Notes. There are several interesting passages which pertain to the Dragonkin, and they are listed below.

I have researched these accursed creatures of mithril ore, the results are disturbing. Analysis leads me to believe that they were created by a higher power, what sort of creature could be so powerful?

Clearly this passage is talking about the mithril dragons, and the "higher power" is the Dragonkin. The Dragonkin are known to have created all dragons, including the most powerul dragon in RuneScape, the Mithril Dragons.

The Baxtorian Falls are well worth investigating, in my opinion, since water leaves the lake above this area yet none appears to flow into it. What could be the source of this quantity of water?

My investigations show that water temperature in the Baxtorian Falls area are substantially higher than might be expected given the local climate. The source of this heat will now be the focus of my studies.

Our best guess is that some sort of heat generation process is occurring in the tunnels we have scryed, though the denizens are proving quite a hindrance to our free travel. Research was never this dangerous for my teachers.

Barakur has proved his worth, as we were forced to slay several dragons in our way to inner regions. The caves are clearly of artificial manufacture, though the excavations must have been thousands of years ago, to judge by the...

Our theory of artificial origins has been vindicated! We have discovered a sturdy door, which seems to be a similar age to the original excavations. I am sure that there is a magical or mechanical activity behind it, though it may be simply be a great rush of water.

The door resists all of our efforts to penetrate it, even the fishing explosives which Derril suggested were tried with no success. there must be some way through which is linked to magic, though perhaps all who know the secret are now long dead.

I grouped all these passages because they all seem to be related. They seem to tell the story of a research expedition sent into the cavern. They discovered that, despite water form Baxtorian Lake constantly spilling over the falls, Baxtorian Lake never seems to get any smaller. There must be some source of water, perhaps magical, that remains unseen. They also discovered that Baxtorian Lake is hotter than it should be. The heat is probably from the dragons residing in the cavern. They discover that the caves were artificial in structure, made thousands of years ago.

These discoveries are given further credence by their discovery of the infamous mithril door. The door of course won't open for them, they believe it is because of magical or mechanical locks, or possibly the corridor it closes off is full of water, and the pressure is too great for it to be opened.

...perhaps dragonkin were involved? A wild theory, I know, but look at the evidence...

Perhaps that theory isn't so wild!

Movario's notes come in handy again in further proving their connection to this mysterious cavern.

jrbo0z.jpg

2r7r0up.jpg

Movario furthers the idea that the Dragonkin actually made the cavern, instead of moving into it after it was made by natural means. He mentions some arcane symbols in the cavern. Are there symbols in the cavern that we haven't seen yet? The rough looking steps he mentions lead to the dragon forge, which is explained later on.

The Bounty Hunter Crater

Orioles8 found this skeleton in the high level bounty hunter crater. There are skeletons all over the wilderness, a lot of them with wings, but that doesn't mean that they are all Dragonkin. This one, however, is different. Notice the examine in the chatbox, something which I initially overlooked and made a fool out of myself :P

dragonkinjr4.jpg

Perhaps this is an ancient Dragonkin arena of some sort? If the Dragonkin have a power link with their weapons, it seems logical that they would "sponsor" a battleground such as this where the bloodshed would make them stronger.

The Rift from A Soul's Bane

In the quest A Soul's Bane, you help an aging woman, Launa, find her son Tolna and husband Brana. Tolna ran away from home 25 YEARS ago and, unbeknown to his parents, fell down a trap door into a dungeon. His parents have been looking for him ever since. Just a few months ago, a rift opened by itself near the area in which Tolna disappeared. Brana went down into the rift, but days passed and Launa heard nothing else from him. You agree to help find Tolna and Brana and enter the rift yourself. What you find there are 4 rooms. Each room is a physical manifestation of an emotion that is keeping Tolna trapped in the dungeon. You have to conquer Tolna's anger, fear, confusion, and hopelessness. At the end you fight the monster that Tolna has become and free him from the dungeon. Go you!

The reason why this is a location possibly related to the Dragonkin is because of the way the dungeon is built. This dungeon was a trap set for hapless adventurers. The dungeon is designed to make its inhabitants miserable, something that makes whatever being made the dungeon stronger. The following dialogue segments prove this point:

[hide=Dialogue from after killing the Tolna-beast]Me: Tolna?

Tolna: Sorry? What happened?

Me: You've been trapped down here for years. I've come to rescue you on behalf of your parents.

The Dragonkin are said to be bloodthirsty, and to feed off of violence and misery (evidence for this comes later in the thread). If this is possible, then the Dragonkin may have been behind this dungeon.

Postbag from the Hedge

This letter from issue 33 of Postbag from the Hedge presents an interesting riddle in the form of a compass analogy.

[hide=From Postbag 33]Dear King Black Dragon,

My friends and I have been puzzling over a problem-a dragon related problem. the problem that we thought of, was: Are you of any relation to Elvarg? A brother? A long lost cousin? An uncle? Or..even the father? If so- or if you have no idea who that is- please reply!

Your friend ( even though im burnt by dragon fire.)

Sir Hobson1

Metal wearer,

Your attentions are misplaced. Threats gather quietly, like steam on glass, yet your head is filled with the threads between things. This is the way of the flesh-formed: to attempt to find order when confronted by chaos, even when chaos is fanged and baying.

I have learnt to talk in your terms. Think of dragons as rivers, flowing from a single mountain. The source, material and purpose are kin. Yet, each river carves a path to the purpose in a singular manner, caring not for the others unless their paths cross. While one river may be larger or faster than another, no river can claim to be a relation of another. This abstraction is dragon.

Now lift your head from this paper and uncover your compass. At each point sits a danger. You would be wise to take their heads.

KBD[/hide]

The compass analogy seems to be about each of the Dragonkin strongholds. Their ruined castle in the North, Castle Drakan in the East, the Ancient Cavern in the West, and some unknown stronghold in the South. Is it possible that its Arposandra?

Arposandra

There is a passage from the Ancient Pages that seems to indicate some sort of involvement beetween Arposandra and the Ancient Cavern.

Laufata ki Glough ki Ta Quir Priw Undo eso, tolly, gnomo kar is Glough hamo sarko pro Arposandra Qua!

The Gnome Translation Manual is of limited use in translating this, so until a translation is found, there's no saying how Arposandra relates to the Ancient Cavern.

Underwater City

In this excerpt from issue 24 of the God Letters, Guthix mentions of a mysterious underwater city that has been almost forgotten, much like the Dragonkin themselves. He also says some are trying to bring this ancient city back into contact with the outside world. Is this a reference to how the Dragonkin are trying to re-establish themselves as the dominant race? Credit goes to Shuri for this find.

[hide=God Letters 24]Dear Spiritual and mysterious, yet serious god of balance which i am not really familiar with yet, Guthix

I have several questions for thee and in able for thee to respond, thee must think carefully...

1. If there are three gods, then how does thy brother, Saradomin, has his own island, meaning Entrana, that is being inhabited by locals that only adore thy brethren, Saradomin? Don't you think that thou and thy other brethren, Zamorak, shall also have ye own island which shelters people that worship both thee and thy brother?

2. Do thee have any plans on this place you call "Gielenor"?

3. If we haven't discovered all of our planet, don't you think there is a place not located on any terrain here in "Gielenor"? Perhaps, something unimaginably mysterious beneath the seas, which we see almost everywhere we go.

4. Which city do thee think is most superior to the others?

5. I am not sure if thee has seen it all, but was there any other creatures that inhabited this place before that are now extinct?

That is all for now. I hope thee could answer my queries...

Darkmon12

1) There are not only three gods upon this world. I know not why, but this is a lie spread by one of mine brothers for his own secret purpose.

As for Entrana, it is my understanding that this island was the place where Saradomin didst first step forth upon this world, and as such hath been honoured by his followers more than other such locations.

If thou hath truly looked upon this place however, thou will know that although it carries the veneer of Saradominism, at it's heart and under it's skin it hath still the touch of Zamorak below its' earth. There doth not exist a place in the mortal realm wholly aligned with one deity or the other, for this would disrupt the balance and I shall not allow that to occur.

2) I hath many plans for this world, for it is crucial in mine experiments.

Some day thou may see what mine purpose is, but for now, I shall keep it secret to all for fear that knowledge of my intentions may change the observations which I must make in mine experiment.

3) If thou art asking of the city beneath the waves, it hath been submerged for many centuries, and most commonfolk consider it naught but a myth.

I tell thee true, however, that such a place doth indeed exist, and even as I write this there are those working to re-establish access between this place and the outside world that hath all but forgotten it over these past centuries.

4) Mine senses oft draw me to Taverley, for it hath a tranquil beauty in the way it absorbed nature as part of itself, rather than forcing the natural world out of it as other cities such as Falador hath done.

5) There are many creatures that once walked upon this land that have since been destroyed as a race upon this plane completely.

Those called in as warriors by the various deities of this world in the so called 'god wars' thou shouldst be particularly glad are no longer walking within this realm, for such abominations brought forth by Zamorak as he waged his war should not be seen on this plane ever again.

I hope mine responses hath been satisfactory and as clear as the questions themselves.[/hide]

Dragon Weapons

The origins of dragon weapons and armor has always been a bit of a mystery, but there is strong evidence that the Dragonkin created them. First of all is this letter from the Postbag from the Hedge.

[hide=From Postbag 25]Dear Mr Mordaut,

You have just recently been introduced to the adventurers or this realm, but you have quickly proven yourself extremely wise, often being called the wisest in all of RuneScape's several realms. This is why I pose a few questions to you that none other has been able to answer.

Firstly, scientists have proven long ago that a diamond is the hardest substance known to man. How is it then that our common chisels (seemingly made of iron) can so easily and quickly cut them? Are they enchanted with some unknown spell? If that is the case, how are they so common and cheap?

Secondly, many have replied to the first question by saying that the hardest substance known to man is actually the other-worldy metal known simply as Dragon. If this is the case, how could the fables Dragon Square Shield have been broken in the first place? What could have possibly broken it if there is no stronger material than it? And how is a wooden Ent capable of breaking a Dragon Axe, often called a Dragon Hatchet?

Seeking Enlightenment,

Cthompsonguy

Well adventurer, I shall enlighten you to the best of my ability.

Diamond was for a long time the hardest substance known to man, but man's knowledge is not boundless. Scientists have 'proven' many things throughout history only to have them disproved later. This is the nature of science; discoveries are always destined to be overshadowed by further research.Diamond is incredibly hard due to its complex crystal structure, however this structure which lends it strength also gives it weaknesses. Cutting a diamond requires skill and finesse rather than brute force. One must exploit the flaws to your advantage. Why do you think it takes an experienced craftsman to cut gems?

As for dragon, I'm afraid that my knowledge of this unique metal is limited the dragonkin never divulged the secret of how it is made, and I have been unable to break it down to its chemical elements due to it's extreme resistance to physical attack or heat. Indeed I have far more research to do into armour from the Barrows of Morytania and the God Wars Dungeon before I can even say for certain whether Dragon is the hardest metal on RuneScape.

So, how did the dragon squareshield break in two? Perhaps there is some unimaginably powerful element that we haven't discovered yet... I like the mystery of this possibility. It is not a good to live in a world where everything is known, and even worse to live in a world where everything is presumed to be known.[/hide]

He directly says the dragon weapons were made by Dragonkin, and muses as to how, if dragon equipment was so strong, the dragon square shield was broken in two. Its possible that the Dragonkin themselves broke it, but this is little more than conjecture. An even more interesting property of dragon weapons is hinted at by a green dragon from the wilderness in another letter from the hedge.

[hide=From Postbag 19]Dear Dragons of the World,

It has come to my attention after doing battle with your kind that we humans no little about you other than you can likk us easily. I have a couple of quetions. First how come the dragons in the wild can't fly? Also do you record your own history? How come you simply atack us? Have you been around since the First Age? If you see Postie Pete wandering by make sure not to cook him medium rare as he has no skin and possibly no flavor for you.

From your conterpart,

Questmaste21

P.S As soon as I get all my skills past lvl 50 I'm coming after you. ;)

Meat,

King speak human better, but me glad to reply for dragons. Human know more of dragons soon. Dragons DO fly, you just see us on ground when eat you. See how proud Elvarg toast Crandor Island? Dragons have no past and dragons have no future, just are. We truly are masters' creation. This also reason why dragons attack - it come from masters' urge...need, to destroy. If you have trouble with us lowly dragons, you have BIG trouble with Kin. They return soon; we feel power growing, calling to us, calling to them... The very weapons that make you strong bring Kin's return ever closer. That irony - HAHAHAHAA. (Sorry. Dragon joke. You no get.)

Green dragon, Wilderness

p.s. How you think Postie Pete skull in first place...?[/hide]

The green dragon who answered this letter says some very mysterious and interesting things. He seems to imply, with the phrase "the very weapons that make you strong bring Kin's return ever closer", that our use of dragon weapons somehow makes Dragonkin stronger! The Dragonkin, from other Postbags, are said to crave violence and bloodshed. Is it possible that using dragon weapons for bloodshed causes a transference of power to the Dragonkin? This is a very important revelation that is really cool to think about

The fairies, the original keepers of the dragon weapons, have more clues as to their true origin. First is the fairy flying around the crop circle, Fairy Aeryka, who has this conversation with you:

If we are to believe that Necrosyrtes is the true name for the Dragonkin (see above) then Fairy Aeryka says quite plainly that dragon weapons were made by the Dragonkin.

In the Ancient Cavern, a confirmed Dragonkin stronghold, there is a complex forge called the Dragon Forge. There are 2 rooms which compromise this area.

A distant rumble has recently been heard just north of Baxtorian Waterfall...

With that small, easily over-looked message in the "In other news..." section of the Halloween news event, the first to be opened was an empty pool lined with anvils. There are 3 dragon heads with their mouths opened to this pool, along with channels carved into the ground, leading to holes in the walls.

This room was a complete mystery until around a week later, with the November Behind the Scenes:

Specialists and concerned dignitaries will be gathered to discuss the whereabouts of the Staff of Armadyl, an ancient and powerful artefact from RuneScapes distant past. All they will need is a willing adventurer to conduct the more interesting parts of the...investigation. Will this link to the mysterious dragonkin symbols found recently, or the rumours of the dragon forge? While Guthix sleeps through the centuries, treachery is afoot, and terrible dangers appear on the horizon. In our first Grandmaster quest ever, with the longest, deepest storyline we have ever attempted, it will take an expert adventurer to find out.

In that paragraph, the mysterious forge was given its name, the Dragon Forge, and we were told it would play a role in the first grandmaster quest. We were not let down. During While Guthix Sleeps, we recieved a mysterious key, the Dragonkin Artifacts mentioned by Movario. This key was put together by using it on mithril dragons, one of the Dragonkin's most powerful creations. This fused the two halves together into one Dragonkin Key. This key was used to unlock the infamous mithril door. In that room was the second room of the Dragon Forge:

[hide=Several large, high resolution images]2dhyycl.jpg

11gp11i.jpg

wt6a2e.jpg[/hide]

This room has a use, however. By casting fire wave on each of the dragon heads, the dragon heads catch on fire and move into the orb, lighting it on fire as well.

[hide=Several large, high resolution images]2l9nl2f.jpg

6pnpn9.jpg[/hide]

After doing this, something else happens to the other room of the Dragon Forge; the pool fills with lava, and the anvils become surrounded with a strange magical aura.

[hide=large, high resolution image]2d6l4zp.jpg[/hide]

After activating it, the forge is used to repair the Dragon Platebody. Since it is clear that the forge was made by the Dragonkin, it is clear that they are very closely tied to Dragon Weapons, and likely that they themselves made them.

With such an overwhelming amount of evidence supporting it, its safe to say that the Dragonkin are definitely the creators of Dragon weapons. That said, this passage from Postbag 23 found by Troacctid refers to them:

[hide=Postbag 23]Dear Dragon Impling,

Puro-Puro...nice place you got there. Anyway, to my question. I've heard implings steal all the loot they own. If that's the case, how did you come across dragon arrows and darts? Was there a previous owner to these long-awaited items? Who did you originally steal them from before you got your thieving hands on them?

Sincerely, A Dragon Impling Hunter, Biohurricane

Dear Biohurricane,

Puro-Puro is the place of ours. We found it. Many others wanted to go there and their desire attracted us to it. Now adventurers come and play with us, desiring our things. It makes our bellies fat and keeps us happy.

Dragon stuff? We found it in secret places. Many different worlds, many different places. All hidden. Deep down, in the darkness. Huge piles of things. Left for a long time, though their masters begin to stir.

Have you got tasty things in your pockets? We shall have them. All of them. Give them unto us! I sense gems in your pockets. We shall take them. I'm hungry. I need them. What else do you have? Coins, seem most desired of all. Strange really but we don't like holding them...they are heavy and it would take all the implings to carry many of them.

Mr Pete of Posting has given me a nice pen. I sense he wants it back. He's never getting it. I already called in the imps. They are on their way. Perhaps I'll keep this paper t...

[i'm afraid that I had to grab the letter in my teeth and teleport away before that dratted imp tried to steal my letters as well as my pen. I hope none have gone missing from my bag - Postie Pete.][/hide]

Apparently the Dragon Implings found a stash of various dragon weapons and took it for themselves. They found them "deep down", perhaps in an underground Dragonkin armory, or even their actual castle? He said that the Dragonkin stir when the weapons are left for a long time, which could mean many things. When a large number of dragon weapons aren't being used, does that agitate the Dragonkin? Or does it merely wake them up so that they can put the weapons back in circulation? If the theory that the Dragonkin have a power-link to their dragon weapons is true, surely the Dragonkin would not want a stockpile of weapons going unused, that means less power for them!

Contrary to everything posted above, there is evidence that points to a completely different origin for dragon weapons. This next image is from TIF member Unknwnwrrior:

dmetalfrene.jpg

Frenaskrae is the dimension from which Mahjarrat are said to have originated. This is the first ever glimpse of the origin of dragon weapons, and it was put into the game a very long time ago. Before the Tail of Two Cats or the Dragonkin. Because of this, I believe that this dialogue has been left in the game BY ACCIDENT. I believe that Jagex originally planed to have dragon weapons be made by the Mahjarrat, yet they abandoned this idea later on, yet forgot to remove this bit of dialogue. I have no proof of this, of course, but it seems likely.

The Dragonkin, The Stone of Jas, and Guthix

The connections between the Dragonkin and the Stone of Jas don't end at their symbol.

Upon touching the Stone of Jas in While Guthix Sleeps, your character is filled with an awareness of The Stone of Jas's history and mumbles something very cryptic.

[hide=Large, high resolution image]1zefsdx.jpg[/hide]

At first not much is revealed about exactly how the Dragonkin are related to the Stone, yet there is a very well hidden yet startling revelation in the quest journal. This was first found by Misterknowitall, who would appear to indeed knowitall.

oaonmd.jpg

This proves that, not only is Jas an actual being and not an idea, as many suspected, it shows that Jas enslaved the Dragonkin to PROTECT the Stone of Jas before he left! It seems, however, that the Dragonkin could not protect it fully, as Guthix somehow got a hold of it. It would seem that the Dragonkin were the good guys in this situation, however I believe that the Dragonkin, after Jas left for whatever reason, misused the stone and its power for their own gain. This continued until Guthix took the stone (possibly without realizing what he was doing) from the Dragonkin. This resulted in tension between Guthix and the Dragonkin which makes itself evident in the following Postbags:

[hide=From Postbag 10]Postie Pete.

Please could you forward this letter to the King Black Dragon. I understand the Red Dragon Isle is a dangerous place for you to go, but I would appreciate your help, as the letter is of extreme importance. Thankyou, Imp Hewer. To the King Black Dragon, Most wonderful of the creatures of RuneScape,Several months back, in Issue 5 of Postbag from the Hedge, I believe, you mentioned something about your master and the Kin. I was wondering if you could, by any chance inform me of what these anomalies are. I have worked hard over these past years, searching the Varrock library, reading books in the Wise Old Mans house, to piece together the clues to the mysteries of RuneScape. I believe your information may be the key.

I understand that my weakling sword is nothing compared to your supreme fury, and to you I may seem like nought but a snivelling Imp, but surely you could spare me only these most insignificant and unimportant pieces of information. Even a clue or a riddle would suffice, but I deeply desire to gain these details. I would do anything you wished, attempt any challenge you set, and confront any obstacle you place before me just to gain your aid.

Please help me, supreme King of the Dragons.

I am your humble servant. Imp Hewer.

Imp Hewer, Time will answer your questions. The Kin wait for those to open the door to power once again. Power not meant for your world nor mine, power best left. They are the shadow at the end of the corridor, the fly that blocks the candle, the seal that holds the lid and the child who shivers under the cold blanket of fear. They are not the answer, but are always the price that comes from asking the question. Why is it, do you think, that the records have been burnt away or hidden from prying eyes? A world made of adversity and beings bold enough to take the challenge of life is no place for secrets. Nothing can remain hidden forever; they are looking once more and, when it is found, the real masters of stability will reclaim the scales of Gielinor.

Every balance needs a counterbalance. Lest he forget.[/hide]

Every balance needs a counterbalance does indeed seem to refer directly to Guthix. It seems to taunt him. Its clear that the Dragonkin want the stone back. This becomes even more evident by the passage "Nothing can remain hidden forever; they are looking once more and, when it is found, the real masters of stability will reclaim the scales of Gielinor". Are the Dragonkin referring to Jas, a suspected elder-god? They use the plural "masters", perhaps they refer to ALL elder gods? Further evidence of the Dragonkin's connection to the Stone of Jas comes from, once again, Movario's notes.

2v3h5ok.jpg

34iiipk.jpg

While this passage in itself does not connect the Dragonkin to the Stone of Jas, it discusses the locations of the Stone of Jas throughout history. The first location, where it was originally discovered, is, I believe, Lunar Isle. Movario feels a certain aura of mysticism while on that island, the same feeling he got in the Fist of Guthix arena, and, interestingly, Morytania. There are no records of the Stone of Jas being in Morytania other than this, and if the Dragonkin did indeed have control of the Stone of Jas at one time, then it is likely that they would have taken it to their alleged stronghold in Morytania. More notes from Movario:

nx4712.jpg

wwislx.jpg

Here Movario quotes a book on Guthixian history, telling of a time that Guthix hid the Stone of Jas away, so that it would not be used to usurp the natural order as had been done before. In the Postbags quoted above, the Dragonkin seemed to hint that they were searching for the Stone of Jas and would "reclaim the scales of Gielinor". It would seem, from the passage, that the Stone was used before to disrupt is rule and usurp his "natural order", however from what we know about the Stone of Jas already, this passage may refer to how Guthix HIMSELF used the Stone of Jas to usurp the Dragonkin, who had been entrusted with the Stone. Its a complete reversal of what most people would suspect.

Postbag from the Hedge

This letter from issue 5 of Postbag from the Hedge is the second sighting of the Dragonkin, preceded by the original quest, Tail of Two Cats. In it, the KBD, one of the Dragonkin's most powerful creations, puts forth an interesting riddle about the Dragonkin. He also makes them sound very evil!

[hide=From Postbag 5]Dear King Black Dragon,

Have you noticed that you're not the strongest monster in runescape anymore? After the Kalphite queen and now the Chaos Elemental came along, they made you look weak. You cannot let this happen to you! Fight them! You could own them if you tried. Tell me if you get back your title as strongest monster.

Later,

Hobbman

Our time here is short. Our masters only leave us this place so we may bring false hope to the humans. With defeat comes rebirth, with rebirth comes conflict. With conflict comes passion, with passion comes power. With power comes a price. New challenges will only bring them closer to the end, to the precipice of the unknown, to the Kin, and they will show no mercy.

Your perception of strength will be your undoing, tasty morsel.[/hide]

A Second Sighting

The new quest, While Guthix sleeps, did not disappoint me. It revealed a lot about the Dragonkin; especially their connection to the Stone of Jas, probably the most interesting topic about the Dragonkin. However there was a surprise in store, even when I thought the quest was over. The Dragonkin themselves made an appearance!

In this cutscene, the Dragonkin seem to be reacting to the Stone of Jas being moved from its hiding place, they seem to feel its power once more as it is removed from the Guthixian temple by Lucien.

Conclusion: A Dragonkin History

These are just my thoughts based on everything I have read. Speculations and ideas that haven't been or cannot be proven are in cyan.

Eons ago, before any other gods walked Gielinor, the elder-gods ruled over it. One of the elder-gods, Jas, possessed a stone of great power, a stone which would in time become known as The Stone of Jas. When the elder-gods left Gielinor, Jas enslaved the Dragonkin and commanded them to guard the Stone. The Dragonkin had other plans, however. Not taking kindly to being enslaved, they used the Stone's power to conquer Gielinor, keeping the Stone safely hidden in their castle in Morytania.

Year 1 of the First age, Guthix came across Gielinor in a sad state. Believing that no god would allow a realm to enter such a state of lifelessness, Guthix assumed that no other gods ruled Gielinor, a correct assumption. Being a god, Guthix sensed the power of the Stone of Jas. Apparently there WERE gods before him, yet they had long since abandoned this realm. Guthix took the stone of Jas (how he was able to take it from the Dragonkin is unknown; he may have stolen it; he may have found it, and believing it to be unowned, took it as his own) and used it to shape Gielinor to his liking. The Dragonkin were aware of this, but they could not act. As powerful as the Stone had made them, without it they were weak, and certainly no match for a God, especially not one with the Stone.

Satisfied with his work, Guthix opened a portal and allowed humans to come forth and settle it. Confident that the humans would lead a peaceful existence, Guthix hid the Stone of Jas and concealed it with his magics, then entered a deep sleep, a sleep from which he would not awaken for thousands of years. Because of the concealment, the Dragonkin could not locate the stone. They still tried, however, in great secrecy. This was not successful, and the Dragonkin remained hidden.

The humans spread out over RuneScape during the late first and early second age. In the Second age, new gods entered the realm, including Saradomin and Zaros, as well as the Mahjarrat. Zaros, by recruiting the Mahjarrat, quickly established himself as the dominant God on Gielinor. However, turmoil came from within Zaros's forces as his Mahjarrat general, Zamorak, betrayed and murdered him, causing a transference of Zaros's godly powers to Zamorak. The other gods were outraged by this and banished Zamorak, but he returned at the start of the third age, intent on conquering the entirety of Gielinor. The God Wars began.

During the God Wars, Guthix awoke. He saw the destruction being wreaked by the Gods of Gielinor and forbade them from interfering directly in Gielinor, banishing them to the God Realm. With the God Wars over, Gielinor entered its 4th age. At the start of this age, a Fremennik happened upon the Stone of Jas in a cave. He touched it and received a dose of its incredible power. The instant the Stone was awakened, the Dragonkin felt it. They tore through human settlements, no longer caring for secrecy. They destroyed all in their path in a desperate search for the Stone. Without the stone, however, they were weak. Weak enough to be bested by human heroes of the time such as Robert the Strong.

All the while, the Stone of Jas was being extensively studied by the Fremenniks. A certain tribe of the Fremenniks, the Moonclan, figured out how to create runes so that even humans who had not studied the stone or had not been exposed to its power could cast magic. This enraged the other Fremennik tribes, who fought them. The Moonclan used their superior magic abilities to escape their pursuers with the Stone, keeping it with them on their island. That did not last however, and the Stone of Jas disappeared yet again. Who took it is not known, but I suspect it was Guthix's followers, who hid it in the Guthixian temple deep in Lumbridge caves.

Despite losing the Stone, humans had already learned enough about magic to begin using it to their advantage. Their talent for magic meant that they could be safe from all the other races that meant them harm. Their small settlements grew into large cities, the ones in which we currently live today. Later in the 5th age, the humans began to experience unwelcome reminders of the past: the Mahjarrat began their machinations again, equally interested with world domination as with fighting amongst each other. One particularly ingenious Mahjarrat successfully took control of the Staff of Armadyll, which allowed him to become far more powerful than ever before. With this incredibly powerful artifact, Lucien began preparations for his conquest.

Lucien had in his employ a cunning archeologist, Movario. Movario was a genius, and succeeded in tracking down for Lucien something that would increase his power even further, an incredibly ancient and powerful artifact, the Stone of Jas. Lucien stole the stone and took it away to an unknown place. The Dragonkin noticed. The power of the Stone being awakened once more called out to the Dragonkin. They could feel its power and it beckoned to them. They knew of Lucien and they knew what he had done. Rather than seize the Stone immediately, however, the Dragonkin chose to watch. And wait. From their secret fortress somewhere in the far corner of the world, the Dragonkin bide their time, puppet-masters of Gielinor, counting down the days until the move against Lucien, destroying him, and taking the two most powerful artifacts in RuneScape in one fell swoop. The Dragonkin wait.

Well that's my thread, I hope you enjoyed reading it and learned a little bit more about this mysterious race. I encourage you to comment on what you've read and make some theories of your own, and if you find some other reference to the dragonkin that I've missed, tell me and I'll add it and credit you with the find! Also, if you were interested in what you read here, come back and skim the main post from time to time, its frequently updated with new info, etc. New additions will be highlighted in cyan

Wow...what a thread. I truly enjoyed reading it, and can tell you were really into this one. Good job.

Thanks! :twss:

Like I said I've always been interested by the dragonkin, and it seems like their storyline is about to be expanded, so I figured it was time to make that thread I had always thought about making but never quite got around to!

Just somethings to add, based completely on my own experiences.

The Dragonkin appear to resemble the Skeksies of Jim Henson's the Dark Crystal. They have a similar body shape, minus the feathers, and have the same fear of death.

Their creation of the dragons is to the Old Ones of Warhammer 40ks manipulation of other beings to defend themselves against the Necrons. Most specifically, the Krorks/Orks. The Krork/Ork was intended to be a survival race, capable of outlasting the Old Ones. Similarly, dragons appear to be capable of continuing the Dragonkin legacy due to their ability to reproduce.

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

That's something I'm still not really clear on. It would seem like the dragons have a straightforward reproductive cycle with eggs and babies and so on, but the KBD in the Postbag Letters seems to suggest that there are more to dragons, and their ability to reproduce, than meets the eyes

The even more like the Orks. Orks reproduce via spores that are seeded regularly AND when they die. So, even if you kill one, give it a few days, and WHAMMO! little Ork bushes growing in the very spot where he died.

So maybe, even though we're killing them, they reproduce through death? Maybe by wearing their hides as armor we give them some sort of power? I'm just throwing out ideas here.

=D> great read thanks for all your research

the dragonkin could be guarding the stone of jas and you use the arma staff to drive them back in a very bad cut scene?

Check it out, huge amount of effort has gone into this massive mod!

Congratulations to creating such a fine thread Psycho Robot! Indeed, every piece of Dragonkin-related information can be found here and your conclusion sounds very plausible =D> . Maybe you can add that the Dragonkin's Castle in the flashback looks like Castle Drakan, and therefore could mean that the Dragonkin are hiding underneath Morytania. Keep up the good work! ::'

Due to my epic stats, I have now started WGS (but I still hate spoilers).

This was a very interesting theory and after looking into it I found some really cool information that makes your theory sound very plausible. I updated the opening post with it, take a look!

Wow, very nice. This seems like it could very well be possible. Also, not related to the dragonkin, and purely a guess, but is the anything that states that the Queen herself found the castle, instead of an ancestor or something like that? I didn't read the book shots, since I had recently read it when I did the Morytania quests in the past month, but I don't remember it stating that both the founding of the castle and its conquer by Drakan both happened in her rule, though I know that the Drakan's did conquer it during her rule.

I read through all the books I could find and nothing mentioned anything prior to the Queen inhabiting the castle. So we don't really know who built it. Although this queen was supposedly a good ruler and Morytania was actually inhabitable during her rule (some centuries, theoretically, after the dragonkin abandoned it), and it was only when Lord Drakan took her castle and imprisoned her that Morytania decayed into the festering swamp it is today. Because of that fact I find it unlikely that the queen would have built a castle that looked so... evil.

I know, and I agree that it was likely originally inhabited by the dragonkin, I just doubt she was the first ruler of Hallowvale, and that she or her husband was the descendent of the one who found the castle and took residence in it.

That got me doubting my whole dragonkin castle time line! So I took a second look at the Morytania books, and I see that nowhere did it actually say that the queen was the first ruler of Morytania, but it seems fairly likely, since the book screenshots currently up there say that the region, Hallowvale, was named for her. It could be that the city was renamed after her, however. I suppose it doesn't matter really.

It would appear at this point that the dragonkin vacated the castle around the 1st or possibly 2nd age, leaving it empty for whoever stumbled upon it. Either the dragonkin left the place a mess and it recovered by the time the area was settled by humans, or the dragonkin never made it a bad place and lived in it with out corrupting the area. There was a succession of various rulers before the queen, an Iycene (that's "iycene".... the capital I looks exactly like an L)according to a passage in the books, took command. At this point, Morytania was a very busy settlement, Burgh de Rott and Mort'ton being bustling towns and centers of commerce. That all changed when Drakan deposed and imprisoned the queen and began corrupting the land.

I tried to look up what "Iycene" is, but I couldn't find anything. Near as I can figure it was the name of a tribe or something.

The queen's name was Efaritay or somethign similar to that. An Iycene is what Zilyana is.

BUT! On another topic yet the same, Vampires are created by Daeyalt ore.

We all know that the Vyrewatch are the trapped souls of the Icyene, but how were they trapped and made? Daeyalt ore, forged and smithed to become these creatures.

That's my theory about vampires.

One more thing. Are the Dragonkin evil? We assume this given our predisposition towards dragons, but the only evidence we have beside that is Robert the Strong's defeat of a single Dragonkin. But why did Robert attack that Dragonkin? If it was because it was evil, was it representative of its entire race? Besides this, we consider dragons evil, but who slaughters thousands upon thousands daily to sell their hides and bones for cash? Who slays who's children while the parent stands helpless to intervene, watching in horror? Not them.

An interesting theory and not one without ground, but take a second look at the museum display

zwn8np.jpg

The dragonkin are described as "a new terror", and the people were left to "deal with this problem". There's no denying that the dragonkin were extremely powerful, but if they were peaceful, then why were they a problem? Also, Robert the Strong had to "drive them back to their stronghold", which would suggest that they were expanding their influence into human territory.

The display, however, could be inaccurate and biased. After all, it puts this event at the start of the fourth age, yet in the original book from Tail of Two Cats, the events were said to have taken place in the first age. So I could go both ways. Please don't misinterpret that remark.
