average java cpu usage while on runescape

Sounds about right, but remember that there's more to lag than CPU usage.

That's completely normal depending on your memory. Mine usually ran at 36%. The higher end fps with little memory/graphics card eats up your system resources, especially on fullscreen. I don't know any lag fixes that don't involve prioritizing, which starves your system. Cut down on multitasking while playing, eg, iTunes.

It depends. What are your specs, what's your net speed and what else are you running? As a comparison my average CPU usage was above 50%, with things running in the background, but the game was fine with no lag issues. Some more information about your PC would be useful if you want a definite answer/solution to your problem ;)

I go from 29 to 54 with music playing, and around 10 or so tabs on in chrome or FF. Using the explorer based game client though.

You need to post more information, listed above by others, for us to give you a better indication or estimations on what could be causing the problem, or possibly even more information afterwards, so except to be asked questions a lot!

Runescape is almost exclusively dependent on CPU-processing power, in the past with no antialiasing or special effects available, it was 100% dependent.

Java as an executable programming language is very heavy on a processor, much more so than C++ games (pretty much any .exe game you have played, such as World of Warcraft) that make numerous calls to DirectX, OpenGL, private DLL's and the graphics card chip and it's drivers to operate.

Runescape, unlike those other games, utilizes nothing except raw CPU power for animation, movement, drawing landscapes, etc., unless you play in higher detail.

You can decrease the processor load by selecting higher anti-alias and other effects in the menu. This will shift a lot of the workload on your gfx card & drivers. If you have a weak card though, this wont help & you will be slowed down further. The bottom line is that due to the language RS is programmed in, the CPU load will always stay high regardless of your configurations or powerful hardware.

I'm always facing maximum CPU usage here, no matter how I play RuneScape. It doesn't matter if I have other programs running or not. Of course, I'm running on both an ancient 'Intel P4 @ 2.4 Ghz' (system which plays RS well) and/or an 'AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.0 Ghz' (some settings turned down, based on lag levels) based on time of day, and presence of certain family members... (Can't stop my dad from sitting down at the nicer PC, LOL!) ... Sure, they're not the best, but they're what we had the $$$ for in the past. :)

However, a system that's only using 40% CPU for RuneScape? I'd love to know the specs on that computer, and what else is grabbing CPU at the time. It shouldn't be lagged on RS unless something is eating CPU that RS needs to function. :-s

I have Centrino Duo 1.6 Ghz, and it's still using less than 40%. Then I have two monitors with TIF and iTunes open, sometime even another game; I'm a major multitasker at times.

I'm a multitasker too... I guess my experience is due to the fact that the PCs I use are single-core systems, then... Because everything else I do doesn't use much CPU... But call up RuneScape alongside whatever I'm doing, and *WHAM*, instant 100% (even with hardware AA enabled on the faster one) CPU usage... Best I can figure is that it is being caused by the amount of RAM being eaten up (FireFox jumps near 256 MB!) for RuneScape, and the continuous processing going on to generate the image... For all I know, it may be corrected by upgrading the FireFox version... Bright side? At least I'm lag-free, for the most part... :-k

Yeah if you actually were using the newest version of Firefox and Java maybe that usage would drop.
