Okay college students/alums---fraternities, yay or nay?

So I have just a little over half a year of high school left before I head off to the University of Georgia, and something I'm completely on the fence about is whether or not I should rush. The Greek percentage is something like 23% at UGA, so it's not necessarily a "Greek or geek" campus. I'm a little worried about leaving all my high school friends to be thrown out into 32,000 other students and making friends, but other people have made it and I'm sure I could to.

Anyone have pros/cons of joining a frat, and hopefully some stories about it?

Considering I still have 2 years till College, which I'm still considering even attending I can't offer much information on that front.

The only similarity I can offer is when I came to my current school I knew nobody but joined the Rugby team, Lifesaving squad and I'm always in the school Gym. I made pretty much all my friends through mostly Rugby and the Gym, also Got on the school Rugby team which is the school sport, meaning a lot of people ended up knowing who I was so it was much easier to make even more friends or talk to others. So if you join some sports teams / clubs / societies within the College you'll make some friends pretty easily.

If you're in a fraternity, as long as they're pretty cool you're almost guaranteed to make some cool friends and have some epic parties as long as you aren't socially [developmentally delayed]ed. I can't really imagine much negatives to being in a Fraternity, then again I'm only viewing College as 4 years of partying and barely passing exams.

Really the easiest way to make friends in a School or College is to make a name for yourself in a positive way, get on a popular team, really liked guy, well known partier etc. Anything really which is a positive and makes you more noticeable will get you friends quickly.

Be one of those guys people want to hang with.

I haven't joined a frat here at ASU mainly because the greek system here is like one of the worst in the country, and the frat I would have rushed got kicked off campus till like 2010 or something. There is nothing wrong with joining a fraternity I would highly recommend rushing actually. I know a lot of people in the greek system and they all enjoy it. Making friends in college is really easy, its nothing to stress out about. You just got to be social and new found friends will come quickly. I don't know how UGA works but I would highly recommend living in the droms your freshmen year also.

Yeah, freshmen are required to live in dorms. The negatives I've seen are sometimes you're viewed as a d-bag or a guy who has to buy friends and party invitations. Also, I've know a few guys who rushed this year at UGA and had to go through pretty awful hazing. But hazing shouldn't keep me from it, as thousands of people have lived through it.

I think Fraterneties are bloody [developmentally delayed]ed. Lucky there aren't proper frats in the UK.

There are "societies" but they're completely optional and just to show your enthusiasm for something.

All you can learn from frats is from great legendary movies such as Animal House.

The people who are view as d-bags were d-bags before they joined, frats don't create d-bags. Also look into the fraternities at UGA and find one that fits you. Some are more focused around partying, others lean more towards academics, etc. If you have any friends who attend UGA ask them about the greek system and the reputation the fraternities have there.

Agreed. Everything he mentions is basically stereotypes.

Um pretty much everyone in a Frat at my ASU (Appalachian State University), is pretty much the butt of jokes and frowned upon. I know there are "good" frats out there, and if you could find one, they can actually be cool, but you'll still have an extremely negative stereotype.. There's a reason frat-boys have negative stereotypes, because almost all of them bring it on themselves. Most are douches, immature, big-headed, clueless, and probably infested by STD's because they always hook up with sorority chicks who are mostly [bleep]s lol.

My view on frats is *most* are just douchebags who pay for friends and think they are badass because they are in frats when really no one likes them, which is why they had to join a frat in the first place. These guys pay like 500 bucks a semester to basically blend in with a bunch of guys who are just like them. They dress the same, act the same, and go to all the same things. I know guys who joined frats and never hung out with their old friends again because their frats forbade it.

If you can find a frat that actually does some good, and isn't full of a bunch of [developmentally delayed]s, it's worth joining if you don't mind everyone viewing you as a douche.

EDIT: kranked, your opinion is stupid

Anyways if you're worried about making friends, a frat isn't really the best way to do it IMO. You will probably make friends on your floor/dorm, you could make friends in your classes, you will make friends from friends of your high school friends, and there's a TON of clubs you could join so you could be friends with people who have similar interests. Pretty much the only way you won't make friends in college is if you stay in your room the whole time.. You will be fine trust me, you'll probably be wondering what you were ever worrying about a week into school. You probably won't even need to do this, but if you don't seem to be making friends right off the bat, be active and pursue relationships with people, without being overwhelming and annoying. People will see you making an effort, just be yourself, and if they're a good match for you, you should hit it off.

there is a very small frat population at JMU but they are typically pretty good if you do get in one, its a bit of work your freshman year when your still pledging/rushing but it gets easier. I didn't and i dont really plan on it. in some colleges/university there can be like a 90% Greek social life and might be needed, but depends on the school

if you dont like underage drinking don't bother

if you can handle alcohol don't even bother

Not all fraternities and sororities are about parties, hazing, etc.

The ones I'm familiar with:

Delta Sigma Pi is a business professional co-ed fraternity that helps students engage in networking.

Alpha Kappa Psi is also another business professional co-ed fraternity with the same goals.

Sigma Phi Epsilon is an honors fraternity with high requirements to join but with great rewards at the end.

Those are the three I'm most familiar with, NOT the ones I recommend. Sure I've seen a lot of the stereotypical ones, but you know what? Everyone's got their own tastes and where they want to be. They just need to see what they are looking for in the fraternity/sorority itself. If they don't like it, oh well. If they do like it and stay, good for them! :)

I personally never joined a fraternity or sorority, mostly because I really only had two years of real university life before graduating. (Long story short: I transfer from a junior/community college into a four year institution as a third-year student.)

Over here we don't have fraternities/sororities in the way American universities have, but we do have student clubs. Student clubs usually have their own building with a private bar for members, where activities are held and members can have drinks and meals. Some smaller clubs share a single building or are open only a few days a week. Some are incredibly hierarchical, with hazing, dress codes, ritualized fights to settle disputes and members split into clubs along gender or year lines and mandatory kitchen or cleaning duty for freshmen. Others are far more free.

The student club I'm a member of (VSL Catena) has about 600 members and is open seven days a week, from 2pm until the last person leaves the bar. We have a high speed network with top of the line computers sponsored by a local computer store and maintained entirely by members, a separate movie room with a bar, 24 cinema-style seats and a large silver screen. Monday night is gaming night (usually Wii, occasionally 360, with other consoles hooked up in the TV room). Tuesday and Sunday nights have free movies for members, with a Hollywood movie on Tuesday and an arthouse movie on Sunday. The TV room is basically a bunch of couches, a massive TV (not flatscreen unfortunately :P), a SNES, and a bunch of ashtrays (after the smoking ban we had to create a separate smoking area, this was the cheapest solution). The main bar is stocked with ~30 kinds of beer thanks to another sponsoring contract, all offered at about 50% of standard bar prices. At 6.30 each day there's a three course meal for 3. The bartending and cooking is done by our own members. Every Thursday night there's a party in the main area, which has the most expensive light, sound and video rig of all the city's student clubs. Furthermore there's all sorts of activities members can participate in, including a gallery where you can display your own art, a dark room where you can print your own photos, a rig to print your own t-shirts, and of course stuff like board games and organized sports.

None of the places I'm applying have any sort of Fraternity, so I don't have to deal with this. From my perspective, I would say no, but that's just coming from my type of personality. If you think you would fit in well with the type of people who are in fraternities, go ahead.

  • 6 months later...

I guess I'll bump this one more time. I may move in a day early just to check out the frat scene, but I don't think it's something I'll wind up getting involved in. If anyone has more opinions or experiences though, please feel free to post them.
