Hello, welcome to my star hunting guide. After you read through this, please contribute what you can. Note I am trying to get a screenshot of ALL star locations, so any and all help is greatly appreciated. Any pictures, methods, or other little tidbits help me out a lot more than you think. And of course, you will be credited. :D

Despite the best efforts of scientists and philosophers, RuneScape frequently refuses to obey what should be sensible laws of science. With all of that crazy magic flying around, though, this isn't an especially surprising state of affairs, and in general the scientists and philosophers just sit in their libraries and pretend it's not happening. Unfortunately, it's rather hard to ignore a massive rock landing in your backyard concealing a sprite who has fallen from the sky.

As RuneScape enters a new area of its particular universe, it also enters a belt of these 'stars', which are actually home to the star sprites. They don't enjoy being knocked out of the sky by roving planets, though, and will handsomely reward anyone who can free them from their damaged home so they can find a new one and get back up into the great beyond.

[hide=Introduction]Star hunting is a very fun and rewarding minigame. It involves mining open a meteor which has fallen from space. When completed, the miner is open to a whole horde of rewards.

So how is it fun? The hunting of it can be very exciting and I consider it to be the best part of the minigame. Put the fun of the hunt and the rewards of the mining together, and you have an awesome minigame.

But why should you mine stars instead of powermining granite? Here's why: Xp and Money. Granite mining CAN reach upwards of 80k per hour, although the average miner there probably only gets 50k-60k. In addition, you will not make any profit there, or perhaps even lose money on humidify or water runes. However, mining stars you can get a nice amount of experience is about 10 minutes (5-10k it varies, as does the time), and get a nice 100k in rewards. In addition, you get many gems (I've gotten 12 from a single star once!). Plus, who wants to click on rocks all day? Mining a star is fun, and you won't need to click much at all. (Disregarding randoms, a maximum of 10 clicks per star.) You can have a lively chat with your fellow miners, or do anything else. Ever wish you could multitask while mining? Your wish has come true with shooting stars.

Now this guide is aimed at helping you get the most out of those stars. That means minimizing time spent wandering around, minimizing banking trips, and getting the most xp. If you are a beginner, not knowing where to start or what to do, read the Starting out section and the Process. You may also wish to read the Terminology in case you go hunting with friends or a clan. For everyone else, you'll most likely find the "Joy of the Hunt" section most useful for you. It will list the locations of all the stars, as well as a map for each region. I will also provide the best method to reach that area and any items you should bring. For those scouts out there, I also list the recommended inventories and equipments for that star search.[/hide]

[hide=Starting out]So here's the deal. Every 2 hours or so, a star falls on each world. It can land in many places, although a telescope in your PoH helps to locate it as well as tell when it will land.

shooting_star_telescope.png

star_information.jpg

The result of using the telescope to figure out when and where the star will land. Oak telescopes are accurate to 22 minutes, teak to 12, and mahogany to 2 minutes.

After it has landed, you are to find the star. If you find it first, you will be bonus experience. Regardless, you can then mine the star for Stardust, which gives experience. After the star is mined through, turn in that stardust to the Sprite who appears, and you will be handsomely rewarded.

shooting_star_first.gif

Known as the "Finder's Xp", this is rewarded to the first person who attempts to mine the star, giving experience equal to that person's mining level * 75

starsprite2.png

The reward for turning in 200 star dust, note if you turn in less, you will get less. Also note that the mining effect stacks with Varrock armor, and works on ALL ores. I've personally had it kick in while mining rune.

At any time when the star has landed, you can prospect it to find out what size the star is, the level required, and how far it has been mined into the next layer.

starsize.png

The result of prospecting a star.

Note that you can only turn in the dust once per day, and can only have 200 at any time (bank or inventory). It is also not tradeable.

shooting_star_daily.gif

You will get this message when you reach 200 star dust.

Each star can have up to 9 layers surrounding it. These are numbered 1-9. Multiply the layer number by 10 to get the minimum mining level requirement (ex. level 5 needs 50 mining).

180px-Size9star.png

King of the hill-a level 9 star.

In addition, each size star also yields a different amount of xp points per stardust. Keep in mind that although you may get more xp, you'll also get stardust slower at higher levels.

Xp tends to come quickest around size 4-6, stardust comes quickest around 1-3.

Also note that each stardust mined is worth more percentage points at the higher levels (by percentage points, I mean the percentage mined to the next layer, see above picture).

A table follows:

Sz  Lvl  Xp

9	90	210

8	80	145

7	70	114

6	60	71

5	50	47

4	40	32

3	30	29

2	20	25

1	10	14

[/hide]

[hide=The Terminology]Here is your dictionary for this guide. I will frequently use these abbreviations, and you will find many of your fellow star miners will as well.

Clear-meaning that area does not have a star. Ex. Rimmy mine clear means that there is no star at the Rimmington mine

Tubby-meaning that the star has collapsed entirely and the star sprite is present. Ex. w114 lleyta star tubbied.

C&K-The Cranor/Karamja area. Ex. w115 c+k in 11-13 minutes

M+M-The Mortania/Mos le'Harmless area. Ex. w9 m+m in 1 hour

Pgt-Sometimes P/G/T. The Piscatoris/Grand Tree/Tirawynn area. Ex. Any pgt stars?

Sd-Everyone's favorite Stardust. Not to be confused with STD, which is very different indeed. Ex. I have 200 sd

S#-The size of the star. Ex. Relleka star w88 s4

Wave-The entire set of stars which land every ~2 hours. Ex: The next wave starts in 10 minutes[/hide]

[hide=The Process]Here I will take you on a step-by-step run on your first star run, or maybe you simply want to review how to do it. Ok, here we go.

1. You log onto RuneScape. You enter your bank pin and withdraw 1 earth, law, and air rune. You teleport to your house and look into your telescope.

2. "You see a shooting star! It looks like it will land in the Fremmenik or Lunar Isles in 5-7 minutes!"

3. Ok, now you sound the call. You go down your friends list asking for people to mine the star with you, as well as find it.

4. You keep an eye on the star, watching as the counter goes down, until you get this message: "That's odd, all I can see are little stars", or something to that effect. That's your cue that the star has landed. You grab teleport to Edgeville, grab your rune pickaxe, lunar staff, slayer ring, lyre, and an astral tab.

5. You quickly teleport to Relleka and check the mines. No beef. You slayer ring teleport to Relleka Slayer Caves, then fairy ring DKS to the nearby mines. Nothing. You then boat to Jatizso, but there's no star there either. Suddenly, your friend Zaaps1 pms you: star at neitznot s5!

6. You quickly leave Jatizso for Neitiznot. When you get there, you go to the bank and get armor and food, for inevitable troll encounters. You run to the star, evading the trolls.

7. As it comes into view, you see that there are only 4 people there. You star mining the star, watching your sd count go up.

8. As the star falls, more and more people come. Eventually , on the 2nd layer, you get your 200 sd. The star soon tubbies, and you turn in the dust for your reward: 50002 coins, 50 astrals, 150 cosmics, 20 gold ore, and a neat mining trick.[/hide]

[hide=Using Star Chats]Note that using chats to find star is far WORSE experience since every star will be piled with people, especially toward the beginning and end of the waves. However, it is very easy to get a star, and you'll usually get the 200 sd with any decent mining level.

It is much better to log into the chat before the wave starts, as opposed to the middle of the wave. You then get the hear the LIST, when whoever lead the star scouters decides to announce it. The list is simply a list of the location of the shooting star in every world. It goes like this:

~~~~~List~~~~~~
Thanks and acknowledgements here
Pgt: 9, 60, 88, 89, 114, 169
And so on for every possible world and location. This is very useful, and you should give a big thanks to whoever gave you the list.
Next, pick a world. This doesn't really matter, but pick one in the desert, pgt, or wilderness for the least crowds.
Then, get together a few friends and clan members to find it, mine it. This doesn't differ much from above.
However, the benefit of chats is you could totally do 0 scouting and get yourself a star. You simply need to stay tuned to the chat and get going when someone announces a star. Likewise, if you find a star you should announce it as well to the chat. This is useful for taking down many stars, as once you finish one star you can jump to the next. For more difficult areas to find stars, such as the wild or pgt, you can get these stars found faster.
Don't be dishearted if a star is teamed by people. You can get a decent amount of sd from almost any star. My advice would always be start mining it and wait for another to be called while you mine. Also be aware a majority of your sd come from the last 2 layers. Also when going to a star from a different world and place, the star usually loses 1 layer by the time you get there, less or more depending (For example it might not lose any if it's the Yanille Bank one, but it might lose 2 if its Arandar. Of course, the people and the percentage also play a role.)
Need an example of a chat? Try "Star Find".[/hide]
[hide=Using the Observatory]starboard.png
There is a board inside the Observatory which tells you when stars were found in that particular world
So the idea behind this method is this: you use the notice board to find out when a star is found. While this may not be particularly useful most of the time, having someone at this location will help you or your clan find out important information about the star, although you will need a list provided by a star clan first.
For example, say you just finished mining one star. You know there is a star on a different world at pgt, but you do not know if it has landed or if it has been found. You look at the board and see Starhunter007 found it 27 minutes ago. You can now infer a few things:
1. The star has tubbied
2. It is a big star with few people on it
3. It is any star with very few people on it
You can also figure out where in the wave you are. For example if the most recent star was found 110 minutes ago, you know the next wave is about to star.
This notice board is much more useful to those without a telescope or a friend who does.[/hide]
[hide=Useful Items]You should keep these in your bank for easy access, as they really help in the hunt and while mining the star.
Pickaxe-No, this isn't really needed.
Forthrinity, armor, and food-For the most dangerous of star locations
Glory-Extra gems
Lunar/Dramen staff-Fairy rings
Runes-Teleportation
Slayer Ring-Quickest way to a Fairy Ring, and quick Canafis/Polly tele as well.
Terrorbird/Bull Ant/Super Energies-You'll be running, don't deny that. Remember scrolls for the first two.
Obsidian Golem/Lava Titan-Huge mining boosts, especially the ladder
Gold-Coins, I mean. This is for Charter Ships/Carts/etc.
Balloon-Grand Tree, you could use Spirit Trees or Glider there too I suppose. No familiars on the balloons, remember. CW balloon is the closest to a tele.
Lyre-The Fremmy Boots can also give you a free lyre tele once per day. This takes you to Waterbirth or Relleka.
Astral Tab-Fastest way to Lunar Isle, other than the Lunar teleport itself. Use that if you're on lunar, but I'm usually not...
Other teleportation methods I have not mentioned-Either as alternatives or otherwise. I'll mention them in the next section...[/hide]
[hide=Joy of the Hunt. Location Maps and more]The following maps and inventories provided are meant to allow you to hunt stars quickly and effectively. Alternatively, you could open up Tip.It's FULL STAR LOCATIONS MAP, with the locations as well as the areas clearly marked on the world map.
The link to which is here: http://www.tip.it/runescape/map2/starmapcopy.jpg
Here I will list all the possible landing locations for each area, as well as the essential items to take for it. It is assumed you always bring a glory, pickaxe, and energy restores.
Here's the basic equipment you should have.
-Pickaxe
-Glory
-Energy Restores
-Spottier Cape
-Boots of Lightness
-(Penance Gloves)
The rest of up to you, but do so at your own risk. I will list all the items you should bring to scout an entire area at the beginning of the respective area. It is understood that you will use the above inventory, unless said to use something different for a particular slot. I will not mention the above items, bring them to all stars. Also, if you use Obby Golems or Lava Titans, it is expected you bring them.
Note that you could bring food instead of waterskins-it's a gamble to last longer. Heat can hit 11s or very low, so 1 waterskin saves almost 0hp-44 hp while 1 basket of strawberries heals 30. If you do use waterskins and the star you are mining is uncrowded, bringing the humidify Lunar spell can refill your waterskins. Typically, this is not needed. Also, the Enchanted Water Tiara works as well, as seen in the invent picture below.
NOTES ON INVENT PICS: If you cannot use any of the items on the map, refer to the alternative items sections in each region. The amount of food, waterskins, scrolls, etc. is changeable. Whatever works for you is the best option. Also, some areas may require armor, those are noted in the text. Thanks to Wkw427 for the pictures.
In addition, Penance gloves were not included in the pictures, but you should wear them whenever possible. Slayer Ring was also not included, but is the best way to get to a Fairy ring.
IF YOU NEED ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE, CLICK HERE.
In addition, for those of you who need a route to follow, here is one, provided by wkw427, with a few adjustments made by me.
Wilderness
1. Glory to edge, check zammy mage area
2. Run over to the skeleton coal mine
3. Games neck to bounty hunter, check. Take tele obelisk until you get near the KBD (or use Lava Titan tele if you can)
4. Go south, check hob gob mine
5. Go north, check RR
6. Go to Pirate Mine, Mage bank, then Ardy Lever
*Unlike the others, this route is highly suspectable to change due to Revs, etc. that you may encounter.[/hide]
[hide=Safety]Especially the Wilderness stars, there is much danger to the star hunter at certain locations. I will list them here:
Jatizso/Neitiznot-You don't have too much choice here. You gotta kill the trolls if they attack, or block um off. Bring heavy duty armor (there's a nearby bank on both islands) and the Fremennik wooden shield to decrease their max hits. Alternatively, you could bring monk robes and 1-2 ppots.
Tirawynn Stars-Only the traps are any real threat. Food and antis should deal with them fine. If the wolves are bothering you, you can usually block um off.
Lunar Isle-Those Suqahs are very annoying. Thankfully they are easy to kill. Bring melee armor and pray mage (they do ancient) and you should be fine. You can try to block them off, but half the time they will still mage you.
Desert Stars-The heat. Most likely, you will take tons of damage by the heat over the course of 1 star, so stock up on either food or waterskins. The enchanted water tiara or the humidify spell really helps here.
Wilderness-First off, I would like to recommend THIS guide by Warriormonkx about surviving revenant attacks. It is very helpful, listing their patrol roots, what to do under attack, information and set-ups for not only survival but fighting them as well. Of course, adapt to your star hunting needs when using the guide, but if you are having trouble with wild stars, or just plain want to make sure you are safe while mining, check this out.
To be honest, those revenants are not too much of a threat at Wild stars. Except one. The Pirate Mine. Everywhere else, you should be fine with your teleport, your bracelet, and your glory (glory used at 20+ wild, you can teleport if you're quick enough). Of course, you'll still want food and antis. At Pirate mine, you'll either want to kill the rev (which may be difficult and long) or block it off (which may be long, but varies). How does one block um? There are actually many ways. The best way, however, is to run south to the dead tree forest. Then slowly lure the rev into the forest. When you are both behind the ruined building with the stairs, make a mad dash back to the star. Hopefully, the rev will be trapped by the trees or the building. You can also trap it in the building itself. You enter the building, and lure the rev inside. Then very quickly, you run to the other side of the wall, and the rev will be stuck in the building trying to get you. The Werewolves seem more resilient to this than Orks and Knights. I can't vouch for the other revs though. Lastly, you can safespot in that building, the anvil building, or behind the Pirate hut and log out. Then you hope the rev is far enough away before you log back in. You could also switch worlds if you so desired to make a sleek getaway.
But there is one final way to block off monsters, and it works at EVERY location, you just have to know how to do it. Here's the basis of it: monsters can't attack over the star itself! This means you can trap monsters on the corner of a star or even behind it! There is a way to ensure trapping the monster, but the simplest method is to run around the star and hope the monster gets trapped on a corner or behind the star.
[hide=Closing Words]Thanks so much for reading my guide! I hope it's helped you and convinced you to start your own star hunting journeys. My goal when writing this guide was not only to inform those who already star hunt, but to try and convince as many people as possible to do this fantastic minigame. I hope I've achieved this.
If you have anything at all you wish to contribute, and I mean anything at all, feel free to post it. This is a forum after all, right? I'd like to take the time and remind everyone that I am trying to gather more pictures and make this guide bigger and better.
Also, if you have any questions you would like to ask, post them here. I am willing to answer any questions you may have regarding star hunting or the mining skill in general.
In addition, for those of you who enjoy Star Hunting, you might find the Evil Tree distraction entertaining as well. It's almost an exact parallel to Star Hunting, except different rewards, mainly in the xp department. If you want to give it a shot, or find a terrific guide for it, check out Tree Hunter's guide to Evil Tree Hunting here. Credit to Tree Hunters for writing the guide.
Thank you for your time.[/hide]
You should post some of the basic things to make it more complete, like rewards, mining level requirements, etc.
Don't forget picture.
Thanks for the reminder. I was at a swim meet for the past few days so I couldn't get the time to work on this, but I'll start it soon.
very impressive.
The only thign I would add would be a screenshot the the exact location, and not just the worldmap view.
I was considering doing that. But it was an overload of work. I'll see if I can get some help with it though, if anyone wants to assist me I'd be willing to.
Well done on a pretty well written guide.
A few tips: Add some pictures of poeple mining a star, what a tubby looks like, pics of the sizes of stars and info on each size including how long it should take to mine, req level etc...
Also you have some spots that I don't think stars land at, but that might be me just not being at one there.
I have personally been to every star I've listed with the exception of:
-Daeyalt
-BH
-Zammy Mage
-Skeleton
-Haunted Mine
The middle three I hear called out a lot, it's just chance that I haven't been there. The other two I have 4+ sources for each that stars can land there. I'm guessing it's just rare, so I'll leave it in.
I have the first two pics you recommended.
Considering the size info. I guess I could do it, but there's so much variation (number of people, etc.)
Wilderness
For all of these (except BH), bring a Forthrinity Bracelet, Food, Antis, armor, and a tele. Games necklace, Ardy Teleports
Bounty Hunter-Games Necklace
Hobgoblin Mines-Games Necklace (BH)
Pirate Mines-Lever
Runite Mines-Ice Plateau Tele/Obelisk (Fastest: Games Necklace Clan Wars and run south)
Steel/Zammy Mage Mines-Glory
Skeleton Mines-Glory
I have been star hunting for a while now (sometimes with star find, great but crowded cc) and I found a mistake: for the wilderness locations, you can get a star at the Mage Arena bank (right outside the shack with the spider webs and lever). There are many revenant attacks there though, so it's pretty dangerous. 10/10, though :twss: !!! Great guide!!
Can't wait till I FINALLY find some God Wars Dungeon partners >.>
Maybe make a few pics of a star with over 15 people at it and a star with only you and few others at it?
P.S. I just went to a star in wildy, it dropped at BH bank, so that one is right.
Not sure what you mean with the pics. Like 1 pic of a star piled with people and the other with only a few? What would that show?
Some locations you've listed for the Wlderness aren't marked on the Wilderness map. Also, the Lava Titan's teleport would be the fastest way to get to the hobgoblin and runite mines in the Wildy...it brings you just outside the entrance to the KBD lair.
Anyway, I like it. Pretty informative.
  • 2 weeks later...
Looks good. The red on the maps is a bit hard to read. I'd use another color. Some of the hide tags could use more pictures rather than remain a block of text.
Overall, good and informative. :)
