blade995
Well I have a crappy wireless G 54mb/s router and I want something faster for better file transfers. It needs to have wireless N and be able to reach to my grandmothers house that is 3 houses away. I would consider buying a router and then buying a higain antenna to change out the ones that come with it. My current router can reach with 1 bar of signal (too low to use) with a 8db antenna so this shouldn't be too hard with a wireless N router. Any suggestions? (if you have nothing useful to post or have no idea what your talking about, stay out please) Thanks in advance.
sloter
Wireless N would be what you want you might have to get an access point to get it at your grandmothers house depending on how far it is.

Well it's not that far away and I can pick up the signal with my wireless g now but it's not strong enough to connect to. I'm hoping just a wireless N router will be enough (maybe with a high gain antenna).
dsavi
Wireless n is said by Wikipedia at least to have nearly twice the range of b/g, but it can be that you'd need multiple antannaes to strengthen n and still benifet from the speed boost. Psycho_Robot
From what you've listed in the requirements, I think I know the perfect match for you, a LinkSys WRT160N. I've always had great experiences with LinkSys routers, they work great and have a consistent, strong signal. I don't personally own this router, but my girlfriend does. She, despite being fairly brainless when it comes to computers (I hope she doesn't read this :ohnoes: ) was able to set it up quickly. Apparently it comes with some nifty auto-configuration software which should get everything set up right without you needing to do much of anything. This router uses multiple radio signals to make the signal stronger and farther reaching than would normally be the case, which sounds like it'd be useful for getting it to your Grandma's house. Here's the product information page from Linksys.com: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1175239516849&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=1684939789B01

Most routers come with setup cds but to be honest with you they are just a waste as a router is not hard to setup.
Nadril
Yeah linksys wireless adapter/routers are damn powerful. Thirding that.
pryomancer
Linksys are good, don't get a Belkin one, they are terrible. I have one worth £90 just sat in a box in a cupboard because we couldn't get it to work.
n64jive
I would also recommend Linksys, and would recommend against Belkin or D-Link. I had a Belkin router that didn't work at all and 3 D-Link routers that all worked great for half a year and then quit. The Linksys router I currently own produces a strong signal and has been working for over a year now.
Orpheus
Linksys is great, avoid the WCG200 and v2 of it though. Probably the absolute worst router in existence. I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal. OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.
