I would stay away from dell personally. Make sure that it is a 64-bit OS to so that you can sue all 4GB of your memory. If it is a 32-bit OS it will only use a make of 3GB memory.

Why not Dell? Have any Bad past experiences with them? And thansk for the OS bit.

Have i had bad experience.  Not only me but alot of people i know. For the most part thermal issues as they get to hot. A few people with laptops i know sent theirs back and took there business else where. Just what i have seen and experienced that has led me to believe they have no quality.

Just build it yourself then... Building a pc is not hard at all. You can do it for way cheaper and you could there for put better stuff and it. Glad to see you want a desktop instead of a laptop. 90% of the people that post here want a laptop and they just don't last as long as a desktop and they are easier to add on and change stuff out on.

I understand people who just want a ready-made pc instead of fiddeling with the hardware for a while, even if you know how to install.

I advice you to see if one of the online-component sites will be able to build you a computer of the parts you choose. Even if you pay a company to build a computer based on components you've chosen, you still get a big advantage in price/performance compared to buying from HP or Dell.

If you like to build it yourself, ask a relative to come over and help you or check alot of guides (both picture and videos).

Hm. Looks like this is going to become a larger thread.. but oh well.

I AM starting to become interested in this "Do-it-yourself" aspect. But i still need more info. There was another thread I saw, and the guy bought VERY good pieces, and put them together for almost 1000$. Unfortunately, i only have about 900, so some of my pieces could be downgraded. Nadril, on that other thread, said to go to the site http://www.Newegg.ca (That's the site I would like to use. Also, it has to be .ca, so i get Canadian prices.)

So.. here's my results.

Cases:

I picked two.

XION case. Customer Rating: 4/5 Price: 80$

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811208020

RAIDMAX case. Customer Rating: 5/5 Price 110$

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811156063

Graphic Cards:

This is the main thing I want for my new comp, as I just love good graphics. Last time I heard,

Nvida GEforce 9800 was a top end one? Am I right?

Motherboards:

Didn't know where to go with that...

Power Supply:

Didn't know where to go with that either.

Processor:

Has to be Intel, Looking for around 2.6GHz and higher. Price may vary, as long as the total price of the comp is again, under 900$.

Fans:

...No idea.

Hard drives:

250gb-500gb. i only really NEED 250-500, and it will also keep the price lower.

Memory:

No idea.. but I would like around 3-4GBs

As you can see.. I'm quite pathetic with computer stuff.. as I was only able to pick out the Cases

I would Really love some help here, and hopefully I will get some, cause tip.it is an awesome site :D

Any specific reason that it has to be a quad-core processor? There are some dual-cores that run for half that. There's also another graphics card that is a decent contender, for half the price, here.

Why not have a quad core? Sure it is more but you get what you pay for. I was the one that told oldJoe to put that in there.

Because both major OS companies are said to be releasing their new OS's with higher multi-thread support, and game developers are catching on to how to support quad cores better, and the overall development of programs are starting to mature and take advantage of quad cores. 2 years we won't have dual cores, or any software/hardware problem revolving around quad cores. Dual cores will become the Pentium 4 in 2 years for 'system requirements', if they aren't by a year to this day.

Also for the graphics card, follow the extremetech link in jaerk's topic, 4850 beats it or the 9800 I think, either way still better for price or performance.

Yeah, I was meaning to start that later on in the thread, but what's the difference between dual, and quad? I used to hear many disadvantages about quad, so I was a bit sketchy about getting it. What exactly does it do, that Dual doesn't?

And to old joe, those look like decent buys, but is the graphics card better than the 9800?

I don't know much about computer stuff.. but aren't bigger numbers supposed to be better than smaller ones of the same type? As in i would expect 9800 to be better than 9600; or is that just an assumption?

Quad cores are more of a future-proofing thing, but with new OS's, and multi-threaded games, they far outperform the price. You can run multiple programs on different processors, which helps a lot. And it's fun to brag about ::'

So.. basically.. in the Layman sort of way.. Quad < Dual

Yes, HD4850 is much better than 9800GT (which is basically 8800gt which was launched 14 months ago).

It depends on how much you are gaming, 4850 and 9800gtx perform the same, but 9800gtx is usually higher priced.

I understand getting a high clocked dual core for gaming, but if you are gonna use it as a all-around computer, a quad is much better. It all depends on the programmers (and they are going to have to program for several cores as the number of cores and threads will rise).

Check a hardware site for a review on 4850.

ATI's next serie is gonna be HD5xxx and Nvidia (with their naming cirkus) will launch their cards with GT1/2/3xx. New serie, higher numbers. But you can't just look on a number from ATI and Nvidia and the one that has the highest number would be the best. Read reviews!

Hm. SO I should go with a quad, and number's aren't everything.. I'm following that much, and you recommend the -insert name here- 4850, over the 9800?

I have a 4850 and can play most games with max graphics. The only games I've tried that i can't put the graphics up on are Crysis and GTA IV ;)

GTA IV being that it's pretty damn poorly optimized on a lot of rigs. I'd be interested to know though what your CPU is if you can't max out Crysis (I can max it out on a 9600GT and get 30FPS. Crysis wars can get 45FPS).

I was going to buy that game till i found out it was suppose to be intense. People were saying with the max settings it was giving a 260 a run.
