remoteman
G'day all Just wondering what people think of the usefulness of vista readyboost, i just bought a new computer, some people may remember from the 3d animation computer thread a while back. Anyway, i got a free 4gig usb with the copy of vista that i purchased, which was marketed as being for readyboost. Now i have 8gigs of ram, on 64bit vista home premium, so is it actually doing any good for my computer, or would i be better off actually using it as a thumb drive... I've done a bit of research but couldn't come up with a definitive answer. Thanks for your time :) RM "A disbelief in magic can force some poor souls into believing in authority and business"
Mamong
Readyboost will only show improvements in systems that are really scraping the minimum RAM requirements for Vista. So systems with 512mb RAM may notice an improvement with Readyboost, but once you're in Vista's recommended zone for RAM, you won't see an improvement. So 2gb RAM and up, there is no real point to using Readyboost. [Tip.It Mod][Retired][Add your Steam name here!]

blade995
You see a slight difference in speed with readyboost in benchmarks but no real world performance gain. Meaning you will not notice a difference, especially with 2GB ram plus Since you already have 8GB of ram, it would be a waste using readyboost. Although, it couldn't hurt anything. Overflow_C
When i used Vista, i had a 2gb readyboost usb-stick, i found literally no improvement in speed. I have 2GB of RAM, which rarely got maxed, so i think its for computers that has minimal ram. Throughout my experience, the way to speed up your computer quickly is to compromise graphics and obviously buy more RAM. Things like Registry cleaners and defragmenters work too aswell and are a must, but its less noticeable. pryomancer
I think I'm right in saying that the RAM from a memory stick is much slower than your computer's own RAM.
Doomster
Readyboost is effectively a "swapfile accelerator", so with enough RAM not to be hitting the swapfile, it will have no effect. Looking over a basket of tests, it seems that readyboost has a negative impact on some applications, though for the majority it will show significant improvements with 512MB RAM, some improvement with 1GB and diminishing returns with 2GB or more. VjuliusT
It helps a bit at 1GB of ram but yes it's useless when you get above 2GB of ram.
