Alright, many of you might see my name and remember my previous posts and automatically assume that im going to start making some kind of argument that the wildy update or whatever is going to cause the end of this game. That is NOT the intent of the of the title of this thread. PLEASE READ THE POST before making quick assumptions.

A leading figure in Jagex recently said that rs was to be Jags main objective for the next Five years. Also, recently released was a Grandmaster quest that is supposedly part of the last storyline in the RS quests. The number of quests in the Grandmaster storyline, and the Statement of a five year timeline fit nicely together, obviously.

Personally, After 3 years of play, I only have 115 qp, I did Legends years ago, and I have only done several small quests since. But the end of quests implies that overall updating and development could stop in five years.

Based on the way that Jag tends to focus on one thing at a time, you can almost tell how decisions are made. In 2007 they spent most of the time largely fighting RWT. IN 2008 it was all about making up for the loss of direct staking, with tons of new minigames and other pursuits. Maybe Jagex has decided to move on from runescape? They are already planning to release a new RPG, MechScape this year, and another one in 2010. Are these the final years of RS? Will Jagex throw aside RS2 as quickly as they did Classic?

I doubt RS will get "thrown away", ever. It's much too lucrative to completely give up on it. They will keep updating for a while longer, and maybe after they move on to MechScape they'll stop updating RS, but still they will keep it alive, I'm sure.

EDIT - Signature far exceeds our sig limits but since it's so colourful you can keep it.

I can see the next few years getting updates to tweak the game and little things that are nice, and some good big updates.

After that mark where they lose some focus, I don't see RS dying. I see Mechscape and their 3rd MMO getting the most attention, but I can't see runescape dying. Even if the fanbase lost some, theres a TON of people who still love the game.

And honestly in my opinion, if they focused on Runescape a little less, and just updated it a tiny bit, but still kept it alive, I'd still be fine with it. (Which is honestly what they'll probably do when they focus on the others more)

the trick is to balance all of these methods to get 99 and either play real life or train another skill while farming.

Another discusson about the so called 'Mechscape'. It hasn't been released, and I doubt that many will play unless It's actually very good+ the fact that some people has wasted many years on Runescape, and I doubt people would bother to do that with Mechscape. They already have a bunch of subscribers and players so I doubt they will end something so profitable.

They will not throw RS2 aside as they did Classic. As for the way RS will eventually die, it's really up to how mechscape will perform and/or cannibalise the customers. If mechscape bombs... then there is no doubt that RS will keep on trucking. If mechscape gets a good fan base without making a dent in the RS fanbase, then see above. If mechscape steals a large portion of fans from RS, then expect the game to slowly die in the next ... 7 - 10 years with less players playing every year (I'm pretty sure the game is viable with minimal staff and 20k players playing on average at any time). The only way to make RS appealing again if option 3 happens is the removal of the 99 cap, lots of maxed out players will come back to see how they fare against boss monsters with combat stats ranging from 100 to 120 (and more).

Runescape will never really end, but it will most likely be sold to another large company. Hopefully it's not like disney or anything :?

its not so bad .. they can add club penguin as diversion and distractions and ... nah forget the last one ... lets hope they dont sell it

In June 2008 Iddison said "Runescape has 10 years of good growth" [49]. Henrique was fairly optimistic when asked about RuneScape's future in a September 2008 interview, saying: "If we are to see a boxed version of RuneScape at some time it would just be to gain space on the shelves, and to reach a new market we haven't reached before. Digital distribution is the way to go for us. Regarding the future of RuneScape, we don't know how long RuneScape will live. As far as I can tell it's going to live forever, because every other successful MMO I've played before is still going on and going strong. If you look at Ultima Online, it's still out there. The RuneScape growth trend has been around a 35% increase every year in userbase. We have seen that over and over again. We have not experienced a dip in new users since 2001. As far as I can tell, RuneScape will continue to grow, and grow strongly. We have long plans for RuneScape. So, if you are a RuneScape player, or intending to join the game, you can be sure that it's going to last for a long time" [50].

Didn't JaGex also say that mobilising armies was coming out 3 months? It's never about what they say now, if everyone on rs goes to mechscape then rs will shut down. It may last for years,it may not.

Didn't Jagex also say that they weren't going to be releasing Mobilising Armies until they were truly satisfied with it? They said it was ready to release, but they wanted to do some tweaking.

For some people, Mechscape might be a good game, for others, they can still play RuneScape. It's too early to say whether or not it will have any effect on the RS fanbase whatsoever.

Jagex wouldn't abandon RuneScape;

- It turns over millions of £/$ every year.

- It has one of the worlds biggest MMORPG player-bases.

- Mechscape sounds like a big side project, so there will still be people @ Jagex who will still focus entirely on the development of RuneScape.

Runescape will eventually become a game similar to RF online. They couldn't update anymore so they made the game free and let the license expire. Since runescape isn't going to get unpopular anytime soon, and the fact that it makes millions for jagex, we won't have to worry about that.

Jagex won't "shift its focus" from one thing to another. They'll just hire people to be on a new team working with their new projects like they did with FunOrb and have already been doing with MechScape. Some people might switch teams, but I doubt any of the teams will shrink in size/abilities any time soon (as long as they remain profitable, there's no reason to shut it down/downsize).

if they did stop developing updates for runescape in favor of mechscape, I can't see them removing runescape, it makes too much money and is too famous/infamous

they will more than likely do what they did with classic when runescape 2 came out, make it members only and do less with it update wise, while they try and get mechscape up and running

I for one won't quit runescape though ::' mechscape sounds er...lame :wall:

I like how no one relizes the "runescape" team, will more than likely not be working on mechscape. It always makes me laugh when people think if jagex is making X quest, than they are not working on nothing else. Companies have teams, jagex most likely has a whole new workforce for mechscape.

Also, mechscape is clearly aimed at a difference userbase, why would jagex want one game to steal from their other game?

Jag cannot pick and choose who plays and does not play an individual game. Fans of Jagex games will likley play other Jagex games, like how Fun Orb almost entirely relies on RS players. Except Mech Scape seems like it is intended to be truly a completely seperate game, which will then, as an mmorpg, be a competitor with RS.

Also, recently released was a Grandmaster quest that is supposedly part of the last storyline in the RS quests.

I've never heard this nor have I seen any supporting evidence for this.
