Monitor screen flickering. PROBLEM SOLVED (kinda)

EDIT:

Problem is solved. Going to get a DVI to HDMI adapter and use the HDMI port on my laptop instead of the VGA.

edit: Updated with laptop name.

Hey everyone. I just recently got my self a new laptop and, until today, I've just been running off of the laptop's screen.

Today I went to best buy and got myself a VGA cable so I could use my 22" ACER (AL223W) monitor as a main screen. The problem I'm having is that the monitor is flickering. I have it running at the highest possible refresh rate for it (60Hz).

My laptops specs are as following:

Gateway FX P-7805U

9800M GTS 1GB (176.15 Drivers)

Intel Core2duo 2.24ghz

4GB DDR3 Memory

17" 1920x1200 screen

and of course, my monitor:

ACER AL223W 22" Widescreen

I have already tried another set of drivers (Had NVIDIA's new notebook beta drivers, and just reverted to see if it helped). I've checked on another monitor to see if it was a problem, and did not have any screen flickering issues there. The laptop's own screen as well is perfect, no screen flickering problems.

So what could be the cause of this? I really want to use my larger monitor.

[edit]

So for clarification, this is what the deal is:

LAPTOP + 17" external: Fine

LAPTOP + 22" ACER: Flicker

LAPTOP + 22" LG: Flicker

Desktop + 22" LG: Fine

Desktop + 22" ACER: Fine

Have you tried installing the acer monitor drivers?

http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/mo ... l2223.html

The acer US support website is down so this is for Europe but it should be the same. The US site has been down for over a week so it should be fixed soon (figures when I need drivers for my laptop too).

Are you running the monitor at the native res? How do you mean flickering? Like blinking on and off or flickering like a crt?

I'll try the drivers.

It's flickering like a CRT. Also it should note I think it is some sort of driver issue, because it worked fine on another PC.

edit: for the monitor thing, do I just have to right click > Install profile or is there something more to it?

Ok, now we are getting somewhere.

I think it has to do with the resolution or something. I just tried my brothers 22" LG monitor, and it does the same thing. However the 17" non widescreen monitor did NOT do anything. If I change the resolution on either 22" it won't do a thing either...

Freaking weird. I'm trying to find out if there is any compatibility issues and I just can't find any so far. Anyone have any idea what could be the cause of this?

It may be a very little problem, but make sure the cable is plugged in properly. I know it sounds stupid, but a small thing that you may of overlooked like that may be the cause.

EDIT: Also is, this the name of your laptop? :

Gateway FX P-7805U

Also, my father has an 22" ACER SCREEN, but he has a DELL Laptop. So my best guess is that the laptop and this ACER screen have compatability problems. I don't think this could be fixed with a driver.

Perhaps consult a local computer shop/expert, I'm sure they can tell you what seems to be the problem, and if they know exactly, can fix the problem for a small fee of money.

Go to your nVidia control panel and check the refresh rate.

It's at 60Hz, and I've tried 59/60/61. And, of course, it can not go any higher than 61Hz.

Was the first thing I checked.

It's not a compatability with the make of the monitor, because the LG has the same exact problem.

I really don't think they will know much more. Plus, computer shops charge a lot of money. I'm just looking for ideas so I can troubleshoot it myself.

Hmm, I'm going to follow this topic a bit, I have the same problem with my 22" widescreen monitor, when I plugged it on the laptop using hdmi it flickered to the point I almost couldn't see anything. I'll start by updating the drivers though.

Ok, update.

I found out that the monitor only flickers when the laptop is plugged in. When it is running off of battery power, it stops. I assume this means that the monitor is getting some sort of interference with the power from the laptop, but I don't know what to try to stop it. Any ideas?

It's flickering because it's set to 60Hz which is too slow, try upping the refresh rate to 75Hz or 80Hz.

It's an LCD Clare, 60Hz is the maximum :) .

Anyways I found out it's because of the interference. I'm going to get a DVI to HDMI adapter which should solve the problem (just played a bunch of games on our 40" TV @ 1080i with an HDMI cable without flickering (while it was plugged in).

So problem solved. I'll chime in back if for some reason the DVI to HDMI adapter doesn't work as should.

There's adapters from dvi to hdmi? Nice! I think I'll get one when my new card finally arrives -.-

Yeah there is. Both from a DVI Monitor Hookup to an HDMI port and the other way around. :P
