Kenneh
We have noticed that a relatively large number of our users are using the same few extremely common passwords. Using an extremely common password puts your account at significant risk, as it makes it extremely easy for someone else to guess it. In particular certain dictionary words and names are extremely common choices. To help keep our keep our users safe we have therefore today disallowed the use of the 500 most common passwords that people choose. You will no longer be able to use these very common passwords. If you already have one of these weak passwords, then you will be forced to change your password when you next try to login to the game. We recommend you use a combination of letters and numbers, and then write the password down and store it in a very safe place so you dont forget it. - Andrew Jagex trying to save accounts? Discuss. CampbellMC
Seems extremely pointless to me. People don't guess other peoples passwords, they get it by means of a keylogger or getting the person to trust them and telling the password.

Dragonlordjl
I agree, it's quite pointless. If someone uses "password" as their password, they deserve to be hacked. The number of "brute force" hackings that occur are quite small in comparison to the number of people who are hacked by friends or keyloggers. Imo, this is just another step towards marketing the game to a younger, more naive audience.
Jondayla
And there was me thinking that everyone in this day and age used a random set of characters... I just used a random generator i created myself, and committed the result to memory. Unguessable, but still keyloggable. And as mentioned above, Hackers only keylog. So tbh what does any of it matter. *had confused himself*

ddaanniiellh
It's kinda hard to bruteforce any password on runescape, as there is a limit on the number of times you can guess a password before the IP is blocked for 5 min. (Even with proxies, bruteforcing is extremely annoying and difficult to do) However, as said above, this is kind of pointless, as most hacked accounts are due to keyloggers or entrusting your password to someone else. ~Dan : 1437 : 173Lowest Combat to 1,000 Total in F2P (23 Combat)Check me out on YouTube! harbringerjm
WTF was the point of that. Sometimes I wonder whether they actually think about what they are doing before they do it. I wonder when it will need nerfing? Also, is it just mycomputer, or did the update icon for this one die? Hail to The Great Big Penguin in the sky. And Guthix, of course. Obtaurian
Guess I can't use "password" as my password anymore. It was a good seven year run. To put it bluntly, [bleep] off.
War_Junky_91
My password for runescape is by far the most complex i use. Trying not to go into detail, but i use not so common personal information combined with pieces of my passwords to various other sites. Its unguessable thanks to my twisted sanity and it would take years to crack with the brute force method.

Kimberly
This update was to stop dictionary scripts' effectiveness. They've only blocked the 500 commonly used passwords from being used. A hacker or a group of hackers could knock those 500 out in a day. You see it as useless? I see it as a security measure they were absolutely ridiculous not to adopt sooner. Don't know why anyone is whining or complaining about this update. Admit it, you're just burned because it wasn't the release of the sailing skill.
