No i haven't found any proof of runescape being involved in comic relief before we get started.

But would you condone it if it happened?

We already know Jagex donate a hell of a lot of money to charities in the UK, however, they don't make it overly public to a large extent, and keep it well away from their game making side. This would be great publicity for them, and could give them a really good reputation, not only to gamers but to people outside the gaming community.

Now i'm not suggesting they just simply donate £200,000 to the cause, because they probably already do that. No, i know the dev teams and business teams at Jagex are some very creative people and could definately come up with some very good ways to not only get themselves involved, but get us, the rs gamers involved.

How good would it be, if jagex made a way we the gamers could donate to comic releif through Jagex. Now it may be unclear what i mean by this, i will try to explain. Alot of the rs gamers are between 13-18, and many will have parents who don't let them go ahead and donate their own money to comic releif. They do however, let them buy red noses, support people raiising money and the like yes? Well, what if rs gamers could buy Red noses ingame? For around 20p, or even ingame GP, and get a bright red nose in runescape for a short time, much like a holiday item (one per char) and event (much like thanksgiving was). Then instead of donating straight money to charity, jagex could say something along the lines of 'for every red nose we sell ingame we will donate '£' to the cause.'

Now you may say this would be a waste of time and effort, but think about how many extra people getting involved with the charity, the good this could do, and it could get alot of people giving who would normally be unable to give.

I am only brainstorming here, but what i would love to know is your thoughts, mainly about jagex getting involved in such a huge project, and about your willingness to be involved if they did so.

[hide=For those who do not know what Comic Relief is]Comic Relief is a British charity organisation that was founded in the United Kingdom in 1985 by the comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis in response to famine in Ethiopia. It was launched live on Noel Edmonds's Late, Late Breakfast Show on BBC1, on Christmas Day 1985 from a refugee camp in Sudan. The idea for Comic Relief came from the noted charity worker Jane Tewson, who became head of a British NGO Charity Projects and was inspired by the success of the first four Secret Policeman's Ball comedy benefit shows for Amnesty International (1976-1981). Initially funds were raised from live events and the best known is a comedy revue at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London which was finally broadcast on television on the 25 April 1986.

One of the fundamental principles behind working at Comic Relief is the 'Golden Pound Principle' where every single donated pound is spent on charitable projects. All operating costs, such as staff salaries, are covered by corporate sponsors or interest which is earned while money raised is waiting to be spent (granted) to charitable projects.

Currently, its two main supporters are the BBC and Sainsbury's. The BBC is responsible for the live television extravaganza on Red Nose Day and Sainsbury's sells merchandise on behalf of the charity.

Since the Charity has started in the 1980's, Comic Relief has raised over £500 million.

Red Nose Day is the main way in which Comic Relief raises money. It is held in the spring every second year and is often treated as a semi-holiday, with, for example, schools having non-uniform days. The day culminates in a live telethon event on BBC One starting in the evening and going through into the early hours of the morning, but other money-raising events take place. As the name suggests, the day involves the wearing of plastic/foam red noses which are available, in exchange for a donation, from many shops.[/hide]

Me + My friend always make giant red noses and superglue them to the front of our parents car, ftw.

They should totally add them into runescape for red nose day. Possibly ask people to pay £1 for the red nose in game. And have Diango explain to them what Red Nose Day is, just for people who don't know.

One question. Aren't the charities that Jagex donates to usually involved in online safety? Which in a roundabout way helps their business?

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

Kind of interesting, but if it's in game GP it's the same thing as Jagex donating straight to charity; if it's real world money, it's almost like RWTing for a party hat - paying money in game for a rare, one time item that shows you have money to spend.

Sounds a bit like advertising to me :|

I don't get how its advertising at all.

You are advertising a charity foundation.

Advertising charity is allowed i would say. Most people know about RND and comic Relief anyway.

Sounds like a good idea to me, Jagex would be providing a good type of advertisement in this sense. :o

A very good idea, but do you know the sad part? The community would probably go all over the place flaming Jagex for stating that they will donate X amount of money to a charity on their main site. Just like when they wrote about the charity calendar.

I know, some people in this community is impossible to please.

Definitely wouldn't object to this. Fun to walk around with a big pixellated blob on your face! :thumbsup: Make it known that for every one you buy and proceeds go to charity will definitely get the majority of the RS population buying one.

Yes, because buying things ingame for promises that Jagex will donate to a reputable charity is totally the same thing as gold farming sites making fortunes.

If you want me to take your twisted logic even further, we are paying Jagex for membership, which is a benifit over FTP, all because we have more money in real life.

Zomg. Jagex can has rRwTing!

So when exactly is this Red Nose day?

The 2009 event is due to take place on Friday, 13 March 2009.

I think it sounds like a very good idea :) . I myself never knew Jagex was so dedicated to charity causes. The way I see it, its a win-win situation. Jagex gets (good) publicity, and Comic Relief more money to work with.

I can't see how Jagex directly or indirectly benefit from this so I can't see it taking place.

http://www.jagex.com/corporate/Giving_Back/charities.ws

Since 2004, Jagex has donated over £200,000 to various charities including:

* Save the Children

* CAFOD

* Hamlin Churchill Childbirth Injuries Fund

* Cancer Research

* Cystic Fibrosis Trust

* The University of Pennsylvania

* Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign

* Bury Bombers Wheelchair Basketball

* SOS Children's Villages

Who said you had to benefit? Thats kinda the point of a charity...It does make them look good in the public eye if its really that big of an issue.

If I understand the concept being suggested by the thread poster these red noses would be for a limited time, and then they would vanish like the Halloween Candy from the Halloween events, and so forth. A good idea, and pretty clean. The thing is though the red noses would need to be a bit costly, and only last about 2 weeks for it to be worthwhile. As well, they would need to be about 200K or so in a manner to help prevent theirself from going bankrupt if a large group decided to use that opportunity to buy about 40M red noses each (if they were 20 gp each, and one pound was donated for each red nose that was purchased.

I'm glad there has been some positive feedback.

I'll try to add soem brainstorming to a few of the questions that have come up.

A limit of maybe one red nose per account, or a limit on how much jagex would donate would be a good way to stop this ruining jagex, but still give them the good publicity, for example, 20p per red nose sold ingame donated to comic relief, up to a limit of £400,000. Maybe even 2 different types of red noses, one for people who buy the red nose for cash, and one for people who buy for ingame GP. The ones brought for ingame GP could be fairly expensive and only last for the event, whereas ones brought for £ could last forever (maybe even turn into rares(untradeable)). these would only be around 30p each, but en mass would raise a lot of money.

The benefit to Jagex as a company would be enormous. I would estimate that a very high % of British people watch the live telethon show, and if the name of Jagex was said on the show, and if the way they were raising money got shown, it would be an incredible boost to publicity. It's hard to explain to a Non-British person how big Red nose day is, But i would compare it to thanksgiving in America, if all the weeks of fund-raising were compressed into one day of events.
