Feb 9 2009: The Future of Runescape

Recommended Posts

I believe that the Tip.it events and the ones JAGeX are going to release can live in peace together. There must be ways to not let them happen at the same time on the same day.

I was thrilled, and a bit surprised when I saw the post on RS a few days ago. Honestly I'm probably going to miss Behind the Scenes the most, but hopefully enhanced Development Diaries will make up for it.

Behind the scenes was really important to me. Like back when I wasn't playing RuneScape at all, I would still check to Homepage every once in a while in an attempt to keep up with what was going on. Behind the Scenes was literally what kept me coming back to check in on things.

On a side note, I'm very happy that they are finally going to make the free version of the game more enjoyable, and make it so that it won't seem like FTP is merely 'demo' version of RuneScape in it's entirety. Of course Jagex will continue to update members content as well, but keeping FTP content up to par with PTP is a huge step forward in my mind.

I have the upmost respect for this new CEO and look forward to seeing which direction he can take the company in. He seems very energetic about the game and wants to make rs into even more of a winner than it is. It's a ballsy move, he has my support. For people who say this is all talk - while it may be, if you deal with companies on a regular basis you will see that it is promising talk, A company like hasbro is very vague and tends not to promise anything. He on the otherhand promises action which is good and generally is followed up on due to customer backlash. He seems like a winner to me.

I also would like to extend an invitation to this new CEO for a tip.it times interview. Would be fun.

Good job Jagex.

I'll stick to my Member world that's dozens of times larger than yours, hundreds of more items, long, thought out quests, huge amount of minigames, faster ways of training, more skills, less beggars, and no 10 year olds compared to your "update" i.e. a new 10 minute quest and your extra Big Mac per month.

Right now at hardees you can get three mushroom swissburgers for the price of members. So it's alot more than one bigmac ;)

But I forgot to mention it was interesting they said free wasn't a demo, I've always considered it one - and I've paid for members since it was released.

Hey guys. I feel like there's a lot of bad vibes going towards the TET right now about what's been said, and i want to clear that up. I know i'm not a leader, and I know that out of all the TET members that are around, I, in recent memory have been one of the least heard from. But i know what the TET is feeling right now, and we really haven't been doing a good job explaining that to you. So you may not have as much respect for me as other members, but hear what I have to say.

I feel like we've articulated this the wrong way, and we're coming off seeming like we're really egocentric. I can sort of understand why people are taking that from it. And it's hard to take take this in context. We're saying that we're angry jagex is copying us, and I can totally see why people are saying "OMG TET UR SO CONCERNED BOUT URSELVES".

You need some background, and to not take this from the perspective of you, but the perspective of us. Jagex repeatedly followed us around for a month or two, saying how much they like our events and what we do for the community. Always nice to be complemented i suppose, no one really expects much. Next they decide to make an event system. That's all well and good that they're doing it for the community and such. I for one am kind of excited that they're trying to do this, and think it may turn out really good and awesome (yet also potentially really crowded and laggy but we'll see lol). But we as a team feel slightly used. They came to our events, congratulated us on a job well done, and now it appears as though they're mimicing us. At the risk of appearing egocentric, I'm going to say that it's more complex than being mad about not getting credit (because it really isn't about that). I would say that if they had informed us that they might want to potentially possibly maybe in the future use some of our event styles (in a typically ambigous jagex way that may be a thing of the past now lol), that would've been ok. It's understandably hard to not see this and not automatically think that we're just pissed because jagex didn't give us any credit. But really, think about it.

For instance, say you have a really sick lemonade stand. It's like the most ballin lemonade ever. This guy from a big lemonade company comes along and starts sampling your lemonade, and he really likes it and tells you that you've done well. He does this for a while, sampling your lemonade. About a week later, the big lemonade company releases a new type of lemonade that is exactly your type of lemonade, except now it's mass-produced and goes to everyone, not just the people on your block. It's hard to not feel a little used there, especially when no credit was given and no intention was displayed. EDIT: Due to some confusion on this analogy, i suggest taking the whole analogy in context of itself before taking in context of us and Jagex. The money generated from the big lemonade company's lemonade stand does not equate to Jage garnering money from our event ideas...that's the equivalent of saying Jagex literally stole our lemonade recipe (Which, as i can confirm safely, we have none). No. Money=Event Goers. I'm not saying Jagex is stealing our event goers also! That's adressed in other places

Jagex not only came to our events, but gave us complements about how we were running them and what we did. Honestly, we were pretty excited about that. I mean come on, you can understand being excited when a J-Mod PMs you and says thank you! It was good stuff. But now this comes out, and it just looks like they came to the events just to see how they were being run and how to do them. While it's certainly flattering that Jagex felt compelled enough to go to our events to see how we ran them, if their whole intention was just to mimic what we and other event teams did, did they have to say "Jolly good show!" and such? Our feelings of satisfaction immedietly went to feelings of being used, which is frustrating.

Let me re-iterate this, because it seems as though no one is hearing it.

We do NOT (i repeat: NOT!) think that we're somehow bigger and greater than those around us, and it's sad that we're being viewed that way. We don't think we're special in some way for hosting events, and we DO NOT think that we have some sort of entitlement to host events, and no one else can do this! I will also re-iterate again that i see plenty of benefits from this, and I myself am excited for the potential opportunities that this could bring for everyone. If these events prove to be more popular than TET events, so be it. I can be proud to say that I played a role in helping something with such broad appeal happen. I am not a leader, and i cannot speak for the rest of the team.

It's a classic conflicting situation that we feel. I mean, anyone who is mimiced by someone or something else can feel flattered that someone would copy them in the first place. It is an honor that Jagex would do that. Yet, as i've stated, we feel dismayed. Honestly, I feel like that had jagex come to our events and not told us about it, not sent us any message, we would've said the same thing. And that initial reaction may have been the incorrect one. I would not be posting this if my only complaint was that Jagex is going to run the TET into the ground and that it stole our ideas, because these arguments are simply ludacris. The fact of the matter is, they did let us know that they were there, and they did say "Loving your community efforts. They're much appreciated". I look at my teammate's responses, and we felt touched, honored and respected. Yet when they come out and say this, we feel used.

I've said it a lot, and i'll keep on saying it because it needs to be said frequently. We feel used. We feel flattered, but we feel like Jagex did not steal from us, but that we were led on. These Mods had no obligation to speak out. They would certainly not be allowed to us what their plan was for the grand scheme of things, and would obviously not be able to tell us. Yet, just like the lemonade stand analogy, they used us. That's what it feels like. And i mean, now that i've typed all this out, there is no winning side here. It's a philosophical argument about mimics, that's what it boils down to lol. One side is going to believe that we should be honored, another is going to say that they misled us. The purpose of this lengthy adress is to convey to you how we feel, and why we're slightly distraught by this whole ordeal. Jagex came in, complemented us, left, and decided to make their own events system. If they had not said anything, and released it, it would've been fine except for the initial shock. But they did mislead us, seeming like they wanted to partake in the events for the fun, when really they wanted to observe--which is both flattering and distressing. So. Summay: Jagex mislead us by seeming like they came to events for fun and told us that, but really they wanted ideas on how things were run.

I hope that clarifies everything. I mean obviously you can disagree with our feeling, but the feeling's there, and I hope you all understand. We, the TET, do want to make sure that people don't believe however that we're upset because jagex stole from us, were unoriginal, lied, or because we're just egocentric jerks lol.

Thanks.

uncalled for omali. although i suppose i should clarify my original post, but first let me correct you on dalcyte's post. his analogy works perfectly. jagex is going to mimic TET events to a certain extent, there are only so many variations of events that you can do with runescape. obviously we are going to do some of the same things. also, technically jagex is making money off the events, maybe someone was going to quit rs, sees that they are doing their own events, and decides to keep being p2p for the events hosted by jmods. they just made money from an event goer. technically they are still making money from p2p event goers anyway, as they are choosing to go to their events instead of other things in the game, although it's the same money either way.

as for clarifying my post, they used us for research, then gave us no credit or anything about it. it would have been entirely fine if they had told us upfront that they were using us for an upcoming project, not even having to be specific about it. as for them not telling us, there isn't anything we can do about that now. we can still have bad feelings about it, and trust me, we are also honored at the same time that they chose to use us for research. we are the oldest events team for a reason, we host good events, and we have good team members and leadership. we always have. everything we do back in our secret little tet boards is geared to make the experience better for our event goers. it's sort of mixed feelings about the whole thing, but i'm still going to try and find out answers to my questions the best i can. as for my post earlier, if it makes you feel better, and will stop you from making personal attacks with words on my fellow leader, team, and i, i apologize for my original post. it was poorly done, as i woke up, was splattered with this news by like 4 different people and caught off guard, so what you got was my initial reaction. i apologize and i'll think things better next time. i would on the other hand like you to do the same, omali and others. instead of just thinking that tet has their panties in a bunch, try looking at it from our viewpoint and see where we are coming from. make good points instead of calling us trolls. we are after all a community, and communities should support their own members, or at least bring up valid points.

that being said, i don't disagree with a lot of the valid posts, quite the contrary. it's still just mixed feelings from me personally. as for the posts bashing us, that's just not cool by any standards. can't we all just be courteous to our fellow forum users? -.-

Then you have cheap, mass-produced, quality-controlled, fantastic lemonade.

I see no problem.

Also, TET events don't generate any revenue.

Ah, this is true. My entire post is based around that assumption. But based on this assumption, this is why we feel the way we do. Which is why Mirrorforced asked for clarification ;) .

I'm not trying to convince you that this is what they will do, i'm trying to convey to you our feelings, is all.

To defend my analogy: You need to read into it more and realize that money=event goers, not..like..actual money. AHHH MORE PEOPLE MISSING ANALOGY. Money=Event Goers! You have to take the whole thing in context!!!

And to the last part: Actually, i referenced everything you said in my post :) . So if you brush it over one last time, you'll see that i do talk about us being flattered (at least three times perhaps), as well as jagex obviously and most certainly not being able to tell us about their future plans. I'd call it a conundrum. We really are torn. While it is flattering, we do feel slightly used, which I doubt i am going to persuade you of.

In regards to the other things that you have said...it is not my business.

Funny story... I suggested Bunny Ears for the 2002 Easter Drop in an e-mail to Jagex shortly after the Christmas Cracker drop. Lo and behold, Easter rolled around and suddenly there were bunny ears dotting the map. And then at a find-me game I was hosting shortly after, someone who was a friend of Mod Mark got him to teleport to my side to find out where I was hiding (cheating by all accounts!) and when I asked him about the bunny ears (more specifically, was it my input that brought them about) he said something along the lines of "That was a great idea Topazjewel!" (Note - I've been told many times by friends and acquaintances, 'No pic, no proof.' But that leads to my point...)

We will be running community events, tournaments and JMod participation in-game to provide more support to you and make RuneScape an even better place to be.

That seems like a pretty innocuous statement to me. But apparently it's caused a lot of frustration and unwarranted grumbling for some members of this community.

I think it should be flattering to TET members to see ideas that they've put into play being emulated through the official events that may be hosted. Yes, it's nice to be recognized for what you've done, but I think your personal knowledge of your contribution should be enough.

While the TET did put on many good events for the Tip.it community, I think the fact that Jagex wants to host some for the entire Runescape community is an excellent idea. Remember, Jagex was holding events for players since the early days. Halloween 2001, pumpkins were not just distributed through a mass drop like the following holiday items, they were dropped/given away at a Jagex-hosted Halloween Party in Falador Park. (Back when Runescape was much smaller and such a thing was possible without significant overcrowding and utter chaos).

Furthermore, Many of the events that the TET hold utilize Mini-games that are a part of Runescape anyway. And back to this whole "stealing ideas" (let's just say, borrowing?) concept, the Find-me has been around much longer than TET (as I sort of pointed out in my little self-anecdote), as have item finds and running around burning things. (Not to say there haven't been a few really unique and well-done events by the TET, but most of it really is basic ideas compiled together and then minigames).

And after all, nothing is stopping you from continuing to host Tip.it-exclusive events. You'll still get a good turnout (provided public opinion hasn't turned against you after reading all the whining -- sorry -- expressing of opinions so far displayed on this thread). And if it's all for fun, what does it matter anyway?

____

As for "The Future of Runescape"; I'm waiting to see what changes really do happen under Mark Gerhard's leadership. I think it was really nice of him to introduce himself like that, but at the same time I suspect if he hadn't gone into the gaming field, he would have done well in politics. And don't we all just love our politicians?

Im speaking on my own terms, not for TET/TETAU. While its great the're doing Events like BAM (Battle A Mod) From 2005, I do feel slightly used. We as mere players create storylines, Event ideas and whatnot without a corporate or any income for it, we do this for fun. I do this for fun. Now i know it's best to wait until they do release it to find out what it is EXACTLY they plan on doing but for us we feel like its a partial invasion on the the work we've done to help make the community a fun place (Event Wise) by all means bring it on jagex but im just hoping its not a copied version of us with a label of "Jagex Events Team" thrown on the side of the Band Wagon. :|

As a former TET member and leader, I have seen the events from both sides. I have to admit I think some of the reactions from TET are very odd. Barihawk summed it up well, and it seems some are letting their egos overshadow the goal of giving the RuneScapers a fun time, which should be the main goal anyway.

Let's be honest here: Jmods participating was good and well as long as it gave you extra people attending the events, right? ;)

I know very well that behind every event there is a lot of hard work, and though it shouldn't give fame or fortune, it's always nice to get a pat on the back or a "well done". This is what you're getting now, and what a good one it is! We should be proud of that, I know that I am.

Many if not most of the event ideas are taken from real life events, past events (I don't see old TET members complaining here) or minigames with storylines. If they are learning from how you're handling the crowds, interacting with event goers, or just creating that personal feeling in a computer game; take it the best way possible. It's easy to react with anger and fear and think of them as the big lemonade company, but keep in mind that they can't reveal future updates to anyone - even you. Don't take it personal, take it as a positive experience. After all, how many RS players can say they got personal thanks from a Jmod? ::'

Laikrob.

You're accusing me of bigotry, how ironic. It's a nice attempt at argument, but your responses are facile and asinine, if not diatribe. Who's arrogant now?

i'm not gonna deny that they gave us extra event goers, what i will say is that they gave us the wrong kind of event goers at some of the events. i haven't been able to go to any of the events yet this year due to rl, but according to the people that hosted events they went to, some of the users paid more attention to the jmods than the host of the event, which is pretty counter productive. i know that the users could have respected the jmod and still listened to the host of the event, and i'm sure some of them did, but as i'm sure some of you know, bad reports about people are more prevalent than good reports.

Well it is nice to hear from a CEO up at Jagex glad they are doing some big fixes.

No more f2p video adverts - Don't really care for this I'm not f2p and it won't have any effect on me.

No more Behind the Scenes - I kind of don't like the removal of Behind the Scenes although the Development Diaries should be a fun replacement.

More Development Diaries - These should be fun, I'd like to see how close a few projects are to completion.

f2p isn't a demo - First I'd just like to say, lol f2p. Now of course f2p is still a demo don't be silly :).

f2p will be improved - Let them get their crappy little "improvements", as long as I am a member it's nothing near as close as to the content I get.

RuneScape isn't aimed at kids - About god damn time this crap has been cleared up.

Kid focused Content being removed - Good get rid of all the childish crap, this game isn't for 5 year olds.

Community events, tournaments, and Jmods in-game - This could actually be VERY FUN! Cannot wait for these and hope a majority, if not all of them are p2p.

Thread where you can ask the CEO of Jagex questions - I'm not wasting my time putting a question up in between about a few hundred other questions cause it'd be a waste of my time and probably won't even be answered.

Well from what ive heard, jmods get free membership...........

jagex is going to mimic TET events to a certain extent, there are only so many variations of events that you can do with runescape

Well then, in that case...Do you dog RSC every time they host a trawler trip saying, "That was ours, thank us for it. :)" As Omali said, unless they specifically steal your storylines (like the Romeo and Juliet re-enacted one), is there much to fear?

but according to the people that hosted events they went to, some of the users paid more attention to the jmods than the host of the event, which is pretty counter productive.

Fair enough, but you're probably not going to see that anymore, since they'll be wrapped up in their own events now. So, either way, TET wins. TET get people who care about well thought out events, and no pesky mods to worry about because they'll be busy elsewhere! And you have the personal satisfaction of knowing that they came to YOU guys because of your stellar performance and work in the community for so many years.

(Of course this means if they mess up, we can blame the guys who trained them. Mwauuauhahahahahahaaha*cough hack*ahah*cough*ah.... >.> Kidding.)

I think I agree with the members of TET. I too would feel used If I put the effort in to these events like you guys do. It wouldnt be so bad if they hinted that Jagex might be planning something similar in the future... Fansites should be the ones who hold events, official ones will be just noobs spamming the jmods about various questions with easy answers.

I saw Mod Raven in Arcanists, so took the opportunity to ask him about this, I asked if he remembered attending them, and then if he was doing it just for the ideas:

Re: TET. My comment was based mainly on two things, viz. evil_mumm_ra's "PISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSED" post, which brazenly accused Jagex of stealing from TET, and the coincidence (?) that the harshest criticism of Mod Mark's post seemed to come from posters with the TET logo over their avatars (like 3PontMain's "crap through a straw" post which I quoted in my "sour grapes" comment).

So I may have made the mistake of painting all TET team members with the same brush based on only a couple of posts, for which I apologize to anyone whose feelings I have hurt.

Also, has it ever occurred to anyone that JMods may have been attending your events without ulterior motives and one day said to each other "this is fun, we should do it for everybody"?

It is very likely that MMG's introduction is merely lip service, but if he was being sincere, then these are my predictions for future updates, ranked from most to least likely:

  • [*:kui1pyzg]Less of that "You must be a member to do this" crap

[*:kui1pyzg]Events like drop parties and parades

[*:kui1pyzg]Jagex staff will post on fan forums more

    [*:kui1pyzg]More frequent F2P updates

[*:kui1pyzg]Return of activities like high-stakes duelling and drop parties, but with anti-RWT measures

[*:kui1pyzg]The ability to turn off the chat filter

    [*:kui1pyzg]Slightly better customer support

Jagex and Runescape seems to be getting an Obama-like figure from MMG, good luck too him. \'
