Introduction

Welcome to the God of War 3 thread, where you can discuss about every God of War game, since there seem to be no threads about those around here.

In God of War 3, Kratos, the former God of War, will take his bloody revenge on Zeus and all on Olympus. After being betrayed and killed by Zeus, Kratos went to find the mysterious Sisters of Faith to change his destiny and then brought the Titans to his time, to stand a better chance. Now armed with the Blades of Athena and the almighty Blade of Olympus, nothing will stand in his way...

In the end... there will be only chaos.

Character Descriptions

Kratos

godofwar2_kratos_thumbnail.jpg

Kratos is the brutal anti-hero and main character in all God of War games.

Kratos is a proud and mighty Spartan general. One day, during a big fight, Kratos calls out to Ares before he kicks the bucket, and is willing to give his soul to the god of war if he saves him. Ares agrees and gives Kratos the Blades of Chaos and sends him out to conquer towns and wreak havoc.

Soon after that, Ares betrays Kratos, by letting him kill his unnamed wife and his daughter Calliope. Kratos is then covered with the white ashes of his family, giving him his infamous nickname: the Ghost of Sparta.

After these horrible events, he goes into a 10 year long servitude with the other Gods, hoping they will rid him of his nightmares.

During the events of God of War I, Kratos is tasked to kill his former master, in which he succeeds with the mystical powers from Pandoras Box and the Blade of the Gods. After this act, the Gods of Olympus forgive Kratos horrid past and install him as the new God of War.

Kratos reign didnt last long however. During an assault on Rhodes, Kratos is stripped of his godly powers and killed by Zeus. While Kratos body is being dragged to the depths of Hades, the Titan Gaia decides it is time to strike against Zeus and she revives Kratos.

In order to destroy Zeus, Kratos has to reobtain the Blade of Olympus, and the only way to do so, is by seeking out the Sisters of Fate and go back in time before Zeus slays him.

After a long journey, Kratos kills the Sisters and almost kills Zeus, but is stopped by Athena, who takes the finishing blow.

While she draws her last breath, Athena reveals that Zeus is Kratos father and if Kratos chooses to kill Zeus, all the Gods will deny him.

Instead of mourning his loss, Kratos brings the Titans to his time and wages war against all on Olympus.

The Gods of Olympus

The Gods where Kratos allies in God of War I, but are his greatest enemies in God of War III.

Ares

Ares_3.jpg

Ares, son of Zeus and Hera, was the God responsible for enslaving and betraying Kratos. He also betrayed most of the Gods by going on a rampage throughout Greece. When he attacks Athens, the other Gods send Kratos to stop him.

Ares was the Greek God of War, until he was killed by Kratos with the Blade of the Gods and the power from Pandora's Box.

Ares was the final boss in the first game and will make a cameo appearance in God of War III.

Zeus

screenshot_ps3_god_of_war_iii012.jpg

Zeus is the supreme deity in Greek mythology. He was the son of the Titans Cronos and Rhea.

Cronos would eat his children after they were born, because it was predicted that he would be overthrown by his own son. However, instead of Zeus, Rhea gave a stone to Cronos and let the Titan Gaia look after Zeus until he became an adult. Zeus would then force Cronos to disgorge the other Gods.

After this, a war erupted between the Gods and the Titans. The Gods won the battle with the help of the Blade of Olympus.

Zeus is also the father of Kratos. He kills Kratos, because he was afraid that his son would stand against him, like he did to Cronos.

Zeus gave a lightning power to Kratos in the first God of War and was the final boss in the second God of War. He will probably be one of the final bosses in the third instalment, if not THE final boss.

Athena

Athena.jpg

Athena is the Greek god of wisdom and daughter of Zeus. She is the god that gave Kratos most of his tasks during his servitude. After tasking Kratos to kill Ares, she guides him through Athens to find the Oracle and Pandora's Box.

Before the events of God of War II, Kratos and Athena seem to have developed some sort of love-based relationship with each other. However, after Zeus betrays Kratos, the relationship appears to have gotten a major kick, since Athena becomes a destroyable statue :? .

At the end of the game, Athena is killed by Kratos with the Blade of Olympus, when she took the final blow that was meant for Zeus. She will return as a ghost in God of War III.

Hades

Hades_God_of_War.jpg

Brother of Zeus and God of the Underworld, which is also named after him. He helped Kratos in God of War I by giving him some power over the dead. Will be a (very cool) boss in God of War III.

Helios

Helios1--screenshot_viewer_medium.jpg

The God of the Sun. He flies around in a chariot.

Helios was kidnapped by Atlas in Chains of Olympus. It was Kratos task to save him, which he did. He will feature in God of War III, where he will get his head ripped off.

Poseidon

Poseidon.jpg

Another brother of Zeus and the ruler of the seas. Tasked Kratos with the killing of the mighty Hydra, which had run rampant through Poseidons seas for too long. He also gave a magical power to Kratos to aid him.

Poseidon will be the first boss in God of War III.

Persephone

Persephone.jpg

Wife of Hades and the Queen of the Underworld. She was the main villain in God of War: Chains of Olympus, where she released the Titan Atlas from his imprisonment. She made a deal with Morpheus to put all the other Gods to sleep, while she let Atlas kidnap Helios, the Sun God, and then let him attack the Pillar of the World. If this Pillar was destroyed, then the world would collapse.

When Kratos stepped in to stop her, Persephone revealed the reason behind her evil plan. She was actually forced to marry Hades against her will, and was forced to live a life she never wanted. She felt the Gods had betrayed her (foreshadowing?) and decided to kill herself, and take the world with her. She was eventually stopped and killed by Kratos.

Hermes

476px-Hermes.jpg

Son of Zeus and the messenger of the Gods. Will be a boss in God of War III.

Hera

Chapter4-51.jpg

Sister and wife of Zeus (eek!). She will appear in God of War III.

The Sisters of Fate

Not exactly Gods, but also immortal deities, the three Sisters of Fate ruled over the entire lives of mortals, Gods and Titans alike. The youngest, but also the biggest Sister Clotho spun the so-called Threads of Life, 1 for each living person. Lahkesis, the second Sister, decided what life the person would lead and the third Sister Atropos decided when this life would end, by cutting the Threads. All 3 Sisters of Fate die by the hands of Kratos in God of War II.

Titans

The Titans are the enormous predecessors of the Gods. After Zeus rebelled against his father Cronos, a great war erupted between the Olympians and the Titans: the Titanomachy. At the end of this war, the Gods of Olympus managed to defeat the Titans, thanks to the mighty Blade of Olympus, and locked the Titans away into the deepest realm of the Underworld, known as Tartarus.

At the end of God of War II, Kratos brings the Titans to his time to aid him in his quest for vengeance.

Gaia

Gaia, mother of Earth, is a Titan, and the most important Titan in the storyline of the God of War series. Gaia has observed Kratos for his entire life and serves as a narrator in the games.

When Kratos is killed by Zeus, Gaia intervenes and gives Kratos new life. She then guides him towards the Sisters of Fate.

Eventually, she is brought to Kratos time to aid him in his quest for vengeance.

Cronos

The son of Gaia and Ouranos. Cronos killed his father on behalf of Gaia and became the leader of the Titans.

After learning of a prophecy, predicting that he would be overthrown by his own children, Cronos decided to eat all of his children as soon as they where born.

His wife Rhea, gave birth to 6 sons and daughters: Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, Hestia and finally Zeus. However, instead of Zeus, Rhea gave a rock to Cronos and Zeus was hidden and protected by Gaia. Several years later, Zeus forced Cronos to disgorge his other siblings and started the war against the Titans.

After the war, Cronos was forced to forever wander through the desert, carrying the Temple of Pandora upon his back.

Cronos will return in God of War III, where he will storm Mount Olympus with the rest of his kind.

Atlas

Although he was very powerful, the 4-armed Titan Atlas was defeated by Hades before the rest of his kind. He was, however, set free again by the Goddess Persephone and was tasked to kidnap Helios and destroy the Pillar of the World. Persephones plot was thwarted by Kratos and Atlas was forced to forever hold the earth on his shoulders.

Kratos and Atlas met again in God of War II, when Atlas gave Kratos some of his power and helped him across the Great Chasm.

It is unknown if Atlas will return in God of War III, but probably not. The Titans where saved by Kratos right before they would be struck by the power of the Blade of Olympus. By this time, Atlas was already captured.

Prometheus

Prometheus was a human-sized Titan, who chose to side against his brothers during the Titanomachy. After the Great War, he made the man out of clay, and stole the Flames of Olympus from Zeus, and gave them to the mortals.

For this act of betrayal, Zeus chained Prometheus to the hand of the trapped Typhon, where he had his liver eaten by a giant eagle, every day until eternity. He was eventually released and killed by Kratos in God of War II.

Typhon

Typhon was a giant and terrible monster. He was created by Gaia after the Great War.

Typhon was so horrifying, that no mortal or God dared to challenge him, except for Zeus, who defeated and trapped Typhon in a mountain.

Typhon appeared in God of War II and probably wont return in the third God of War, since he was created after the Great War.

Perses

The lava-covered Titan of Destruction.

He will make his debut in God of War III, where he is seen fighting against Helios and Kratos.

Demigods and Other Characters

Perseus

Perseus is a son of Zeus and a legendary Greek warrior. He seeks an audience with the Sisters of Fate to get his dead girlfriend Andromeda back. He received many divine items from several Gods, including the Helmet of Hades, a sword from Hermes and a shield from Athena.

Perseus meets his half-brother Kratos in the Hall of Atropos. It wasnt a happy family reunion.

Hercules

Hercules, a Spartan warrior and also a son of Zeus, became famous after his Twelve Labours.

Hercules was an unlockable skin in God of War II, but will make a real appearance in God of War III, where he will side with the Gods of Olympus against Kratos.

Theseus

Theseus is the son of Poseidon. He killed the dreaded Minotaur of Crete and saved Athens from king Mino.

Theseus became a servant of the Sisters of Fate. He received the title of Horse Master and was in charge of the key to the Steeds of Time. He met his end when he refused to give the key to Kratos.

Barbarian King

This strong leader, in command of more than a thousand barbarians, was able to beat general Kratos and his army, until the latter one called out to Ares. In the end, the Barbarian King proofed to be no match against the Blades of Chaos, and was beheaded by Kratos.

The Barbarian King managed to escape from the Underworld and went to seek an audience with the Sisters of Fate, to get revenge on Kratos. However, he found Kratos on the Island of Creation and challenged him again. He was killed by his own giant warhammer.

Icarus

Icarus was the son of Deadalus, the architect who made the Labyrinth of Crete. Unfortunately, they where both prisoners of the kind of Crete. In order to escape, the clever architect collected wings from birds and waxed them together to make 2 pairs of wings. The duo flew away, but Icarus flew too close to the sun. His waxed wings melted and he plunged into the ocean.

Icarus survived the fall, and went to seek an audience with the Sisters of Fate. He fell to his death when Kratos needed Icarus wings.

Kratos Wife and Daughter

Kratos was married to an unknown Spartan woman. She was Kratos true love and the only person who didnt fear him during service to Ares. Her name hasnt been mentioned yet in the games. They had a daughter, named Calliope.

They where both killed by Kratos, while he was blinded by Ares power. Kratos still has nightmares of this day.

When Kratos was on a quest to save Helios, the Sun God, he saw Calliope again in the Underworld, and almost followed her to the Elysium Fields. The Queen of the Underworld, Persephone, had an evil plan to destroy the entire world and the Underworld, along with the Elysium Fields. Kratos had to abandon his daughter to save her.

The Gorgon Sisters

There are three powerfull Gorgon sisters. The Gorgons are snake-like female creatures, who have the power to turn people into stone, by only looking at them. The most well-know Gorgon was Medusa. Her hair was turned into a bunch of snakes by Athena. Aphrodite ordered Kratos to kill Medusa. He did so by beheading her.

Euryale was a lot bigger and stronger than her sister Medusa. She lingered in her temple in the Bog of the Forgotten on the Island of Creation. When Kratos stumbled upon her, Euryale wanted to take revenge for the killing of her sister. She also got decapitated by Kratos.

The third sister Stheno, has not yet appeared in the games, and it is possible that she will make an appearance in God of War III.

It's gonna be awesome. Official Playstation Magazine has a 5 page feature on it this month, makes a good read.

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

I wish it didn't come out for just PS3. Now I have to watch all of the cutscenes on Youtube. <.<

Yeah, well I wish that we PS3 owners got DLC for Fallout. Its not going to happen though.

No reason they couldn't have made a less graphical version for the PS2....

Why do you only have the description for kratos?

Ares was the (first) Greek god of war. He was killed by kratos, using Pandora's box, after his rampage on Athens.

Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom. She sacrificed herself to save Zeus when Kratos was about to deliver the finishing blow to Zeus. She was the goddess who led Kratos through his training over his ten year long service to the gods.

Zeus is the king of the gods. He is the father of Kratos. Zeus killed Kratos in an attempt to destroy Kratos before Kratos destroyed Olympus.

You also might want to include Kratos is a demi-god (half god). It is kind of important.

Gaia (or Gaea) the titan was the first being to exist. She led Kratos on his journey to the sisters of fate hoping he would kill Zeus. She sees it as her responsibility because she raised Zeus after Rhea sent him away to Crete. Zeus then came back to defeat not only Kronos but enslave all the titans.

It is good to know some mythology to have a background for the game. Even though God of war already messes up some parts of the mythology. Like the fact that there are only 3 cyclopes. Or the fact that the titans were guarded and one alone wouldn't be likely to break out of tartarus, even with the help of the queen of the underworld.

Why don't you have any information about GOW: Chains of Olympus?

wow! wow! wow!

Hold on a sec there.

IF they would make a less graphical one, the would also need a budget, time, etc. to create that one, wich would mean less of all that to create THE most epic PS3 game that will be available at that time. Meaning that it wouldn't be as good as it will be now.

Just look at the last attempt to do this (SW: Force Unleashed, anyone?)

This game is probably the one which will finally tip me into getting a PS3...God of War series is probably one of my favourites, mythology is just a great base for a game.

Indeed it is.

What I don't like though, is that this game is already a bit overhyped. Over the past years, there have been a Kratos golf character and a Kratos sock puppet. A bit commercialising, no?

All companies do that. Besides when you get to see your big hero in a fish costume, its kind of hard to top. The only thing that might top that is seeing your big hero in a potato costume...

I don't know if this is happening to anyone else but 3 of your pictures aren't working for me :? The 2 "spoiler" pictures/videos (Whichever, can't tell), and your last one.

I don't have a PS3, and have really only played (and beaten) the first game. I don't plan on getting a PS3 until KH3 comes out (whenever THAT will be... :( )

Unfinished netherrack symbol of Khorne.

Never forget. ~creeper face w/single tear~

DO YOU HEAR THE VOICES TOO?!?!

I'll add the youtube-URL's if that's more convenient.

God Sony are probably the best for not commercialising stuff. I mean how much crap have you seen with either Mario, Halo, or Gears of War on it?

Interesting article. Thanks.

I once heard that they would be doing something "unique" things with co-op play. However, they've been awfully quiet about it since then. Maybe this is the start of a new break-through?

Time for an update don't ya think?

First, I'd like to thank InsanityV2 (again) and ratchet573 for directing me towards the articles in the Official PS3 magazine and in Game Informer respectively. I went to an international magazine store today and bought both of them. I'll make an attempt on putting them in my first post later on. Heck, maybe I'll even scan the pages.

But that's for the near future.

Also thanks to life_mage12 for giving me some character details.

Every bit of information about GOW: Chains of Olympus is also welcome, since I haven't played it. And I don't mind spoilers BTW.

To-do list:

- Finish the character details and think about some notable minor characters and bosses.

EDIT: Gaia and Athena added. Now to finish describing Kratos.

- Add some known enemies for GOW 3.

- Post the URL's of the articles posted before in the first post (with credits) and maybe even a short summary of each of them.

- Talk about weapons and powers.

- Post some more facts about GOW 3.

- Add the articles from the magazines (see above).

You can expect these updates within the next week. The character descriptions should be ready by the end of today.

You've all been really helpfull, so keep the reactions coming ::'
