gago
Since there are many topics about different styles of music, i searched around for punk. I could only find one "recommend me" thread, so(after a bit of thinking) i decided to create this topic. Punk in short(very short. read Wikipedia to find out more): Punk developed in mid 1970s in UK and USA to contradict the government and to show the people that they don't agree what is happening in their country. Simple 3-chord, fast music with often anti-political(and short) lyrics + punk fashion was a hit and a shock. Punkers helped to change things that were wrong or at least they tried to. Often used word used by them was Anarchy. They demanded a state in the country of no government as they believed that the people themselves can live better without "leaders". After a few years, the prime punk has practically vanished as there was no more need for it - the main purpose of it was(mostly) achieved. But the soul of punk did not die. New sub-genres started to appear, like Oi! and Harcore, which were more agressive. Today we can say that punk is definitely not dead, it has just changed its appearance and sound a bit, but we still like it :) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In general, punk(rock) is my favourite music genre and i've been listening to it since i was in primary school. One day a friend gave me a tape to listen to, which i did and after a few times i really started to like it. When i met that friend again he told me that the band was The Offspring(Americana). I asked him to record me the tape and he did. He actually gave me another tape with Green Day(Dookie) which i thought was even better :) In later years i found about some other bands, the most of them after i got access to the internet. I never really liked the "old-style" punk, until i really listened to Sex Pistols and found out they are not that bad. Still, the new age punkrock is what i prefer. Hardcore is also something i never really listened to, some of The Exploited and maybe a few songs of unknown artists to me. The bands i like:Green Day, Blink 182, The Offspring, Yellowcard, Zablujena Generacija, Perkele, Niet, Sum 41, +44, Angels And Airwaves, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, Flogging Molly, Billy Idol, The Used, Die Toten Hosen... There are more, but i can't remember any at the moment :) [hide=Don't say that some of those bands are not punk]Every one of them has at least a bit of punk in their music. Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, and such are pop-punk Angels And Airwaves produce ballads, but they have punk in them :P My Chemical Romance is almost emo, but i think not completely The Used - a lot of emo, but some of the songs are great :) Billy Idol - a legend of pop-punk! Flogging Molly - irish folk music + punkrock = awesome combination Yellowcard - i love the violin + in general they have very likable songs Zablujena Generacija - a Slovenian punkrock band, not bad at all :) Niet - older slovenian punk band with some legendary songs Perkele - swedish punkrock band :) Die Toten Hosen - german punkrock band ;)[/hide] my best punk rock...: band: Blink 182, although Green Day and The Offspring aren't far behind album: Green Day - Dookie song: Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue person: Sid Vicious, the "bassist" of Sex Pistols(died in 1979 from heroin overdose...); he was the icon, the attitude of punk [hide=songs that i recommend listening to] Sid Vicious - My Way Green Day - Burnout [/hide] So, what is your oppinion on punk as music(or subculture), why do you like/don't like it, what are your favourite songs, bands...? pryomancer
Moved. I'm a great fan of punk. The Ramones and The Clash are my favourites. The Sex Pistols are also great, but they are almsot too stereotypical.
Bouwzie
I'm a punk rocker, have quite some of it too, and always downloading more (that's a lie, I download from time to time) : For me, The Offspring is the best punk rock band around, I can listen to them all day long. Although the last album was a bit less punk, it was still amazing. Hey [garden tool], let's go! The Ramones are cool too ;) Edit: - The All American Rejects - Angels & Airwaves - Anti-Flag - At The Drive-In - Bad Religion - Billy Talent - Blink-182 - A Day To Remember - Disco Ensemble - Donots - Gob - Good Riddance - Green Day - H2O - Ignite - Lagwagon - Much The Same - New Found Glory - No Use For A Name - NOFX - The Offspring - Only Crime - +44 - Rise Against - Senses Fail - Strike Anywhere - Strung Out - Sum 41 - Thrice - A Wilhelm Scream - Yellowcard - Zebrahead - The Ramones - Millencolin - Last of the Believers - Aiden - Autopilot off - Foolproof - Templeton Pek Those are some bands that I have at the moment, or that I am going to get. gago
to pyromancer: Thanks for moving the topic :D Oops, i forgot to mention The Ramones, but i don't like them that much anyways :) Sex Pistols are supposed to be stereotypical. They are just awesomely crazy :D to bouwzie: The newest Offspring album is a bit less punkish but i think it is WAAAY(i realy mean WAAAAAY) better than Splinter. You're Gonna Go Far Kid and Fix You are my favourite from Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace album :) "Happines only real when shared." indy500fan
Of the old stuff I like The Clash. The Ramones and Sex Pistols are good sometimes, mostly I just like a few of their songs. As for newer stuff I like NOFX, Bad Religion, Rancid (kind of reggae punk) and Dropkick Murphys (Irish punk).
Nadril
Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy, MCR, Good Charlotte? Punk is a pretty fun genre (although it did die out, all that is left is crappy pop punk and pop rock stuff) but these bands you listed are horrible, and not punk. NoFX and Bad Religion are probably my two favorite from the genre, NoFX pretty much just for their incredible song The Decline which has to be the best punk song ever. I've never really explored the genre much though.

gago
to bouwzie: For me it's right after Americana :D to Nadril: i'm not going to argue with you, think whatever you want, but those bands are still punk. Not the "classical" punk, but more like pop-punk, emo-punk and other sub-genres. "Happines only real when shared." Kalphite
I don't listen to much punk, mainly because I haven't had too much inclination. I do, however, like Propoghandi and some Emo bands a lot though, as well as Dead Kennedys.
Skull
I'm more a hardcore fan than the punk stuff you listed, but bouwzie's list has some of my favorite bands on it. [bleep] the law, they can eat my dick that's word to Pimp
Hedgehog
I'm a huge fan of Green Day. American Idiot moved them into a more pop punk genre than before, in my opinion. You should listen to it if you haven't. Burnout is my favorite song on Dookie, but Chump is a close second.

pfilc23
Sorry for my late response to this :) I'm a fan of all punk music genres pop to hardcore and everything in between (tho I like some better than others and my tastes often change over the years). I've got about 300 bands on my hard drive, but I won't list them all unless someone really wants to branch out and check out some new stuff. I don't think this conversation would be complete without mentioning a few more bands that are imo legends: Good Riddance, Social Distortion, Descendents, Minor Threat, Misfits, Bad Brains, Black Flag. Some additional of my favs: Strike Anywhere, Bigwig, Thought Riot, Against Me!
WookieeMania12
There is some good punk out there (Dead Kennedy's, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, Green Day, Sum 41, Dropkick Murphy's, Rise Against, Misfits, etc), but I'm not that big on punk personally. How2PK
I don'y have much with the genre. Kicking against everything or just not giving a [cabbage] about anything, it just doesn't really interest me very much. I saw the Sex Pistols live last year, I walked away after 15 minutes, I don't think I've ever seen something so pathetic in my life. aquariusman
Okay, so I may have said some things in anger, which made me realize that is just not the way to go. But to back up what I had said: I apologize if I come off as a bit hostile, but I do get a bit angry when people claim that punk is something it is not. Punk rock isn't just being rebellious idiots, any teenager does that. It's being rebellious idiots while still being able to discuss politics without being an idiot. It's about knowing how to criticize that which you see as wrong in society, while still hiding it under humour and satire. Or it's just being plain out critical of your government. Either way, some kind of fun is involved in the process. Go to a show, get hammered, smoke pot, do drugs, or just enjoy the time. It isn't kicking down amps and trashing hotel rooms, smashing your instruments on stage. Possibly the best example I can use of a true punk rock band is NOFX. They openly criticize religion, government, along with general hate (See "You're Wrong"). Then they go and put out tracks like 'Timmy the Turtle' and "Whoops, I OD'd Again", or maybe even "We're going to Hell for this one". They began off, as their self-description puts it, as sucking. They didn't care though, they just stuck through it and did what they found fun. It is this early part of the band that I consider to be true punk. However, I consider it very hard to find true punk nowadays. There isn't really much of it in mainstream media. Some of the most noticeable examples I can think of are Rise Against, and just slightly Blink 182. Just a side note though, Blink 182 is not purely punk. Toward the end of their time they grew further ad further away from punk, eventually evolving into +44 and Angels & Airwaves. Like has happened with Blink 182, and every form of music, punk evolves. This is why it is so hard to firmly put labels on music genres, and maybe one of the reasons why I got angry about what you considered punk. I know many people who have never even heard of bands like the Adolescents, the Dead Kennedys, the Dropkick Murphys and Black Flag. They've only ever heard of Fallout Boy, Blink-182, Sum 41, +41, and many other of the 'mainstream' bands that make up what I consider to be half of the punk genre. The other half of the punk genre, is quite often based underground, or just beyond the media's attention. This includes band like Strike Anywhere, Authority Zero, Anti-Flag, NOFX, Pennywise, Rancid, and Bad Religion. Then there's also the gray area between punk and third-wave ska, with bands like the Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto (Although nearly any genre can stake a claim on them), Less Than Jake, Sublime, and The Flatliners. These bands will often spend most of their time touring, maybe put out a music video, but comparing them to most of the bands you'll see on MTV, the biggest difference is their longevity. They last years, while most of the artists appearing on MTV or Much on Demand will have a shelf life of a year or two, putting out three or four good songs before fading away. When your band has been a band longer than the Ramones And critics coin you "the punk Rolling Stones" That's when you know this is for life Okay, so this post has gone from me trying to correct the OP on his belief of what "punk" is and just giving a more specific run down of the genre. I guess I'll settle for that, I'm just glad to find out that more than three people on this forum actually listen to the genre. [hide=Now for a recommendation list]My Favourites underlined. NOFX Streetlight Manifesto Catch 22 Rise Against The Flatliners Anti-Flag Penny Wise Adolescents Blink-182 Sum 41 Fallout Boy (*gasp*) The Dropkick Murphys Flogging Molly The Dead Kennedys Black Flag Reel Big Fish Goldfinger Less Than Jake Rancid Bad Religion Strike Anywhere Authority Zero The Gaslight Anthem Hostage Life illScarlett Jimmy Eat World The Misfits The Ramones (And it's Blitzkrieg Bop, not Hey [garden tool], Lets Go) The Clash Mustard Plug Operation Ivy Propagandhi The Rx Bandits Social Code Social Distortion The Suicide Machines[/hide] This list is in now way ordered, other than that I went by memory and then by my iTunes library. This should provide what I'd say is a pretty well-rounded palette of what I consider the punk genre to be. Also, don't just take my word for this, explore the genre yourself, form your own opinion. There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. Thatregret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new, better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret. It's experience.
