How can you guys handle this?

Hi, I am a long time player of RS and have loved the game for years. There have been ups and downs as far as the management has been concerned...but for the most part it has remained fairly consistent, and there was always something interesting going on. However, as of late, I have completely lost interest in this game for the first time in years, due simply to the completely confusing and inconsistent nature of updates. About a month ago, I decided to let my membership expire for the first time in 4 years, and I haven't had any inspiration to get it back.

To all who have not yet lost their drive to play this game...I want to know...how? What keeps you interested when you get 2 hours worth of quests over the past 2 months? What is worth the 5 dollars a month when, in the first 4 months of the year, the developers have failed to bring a single content update that has a long-term place in the game? The biggest update so far has been the release of Soul Wars. Though I think that the game is poorly designed, and it seems that the majority do not enjoy playing it, I can understand that there are a fair bit of you who might enjoy this mini game. However, you cannot deny that the rewards are dull, predictable, and lack the innovative creativity that has been keeping me with this game since middle school. The exp rewards make Soul Wars feel like a different version of Pest Control, and the pet rewards, while they do serve a slight novelty purpose, are such a tiny reward. How many people do you honestly see with pets out at most times? In every major location, you might see a few non-familiar followers, but it would seem that the majority of the community isn't too thrilled with gaining access to new pets. Also, compare such a reward to the armor rewards from Pest Control....PC gave us an innovative new armor concept, and till this day there are still crowds of people flooding the PC docks. Years from now, if there is anyone at all playing Soul Wars, I am going to bet it will just be thanks to its proximity to Edgeville...

I understand that this is upgrade year, but this is getting ridiculous. You can't just stop releasing NEW game content in favor of "upgrades". Also, they said from the start that it was not their intention to neglect exciting, new content. I just don't see anything to back that up though...The company then tries to tell us that we are replacing BTS with a more regular flow of the dev diaries, as a more "open" form of communicating progress on upcoming updates. What have the diaries been so far? We have gotten information about....drumroll....DUNGEON MAPS. OKAY now maybe I am off my rocker here, but this whole dungeon map thing....it really is not a big deal. It is a convenience. Nobody wants to hear diary progress about this garbage. We have all made our way to fansites and all of them have great mapped out dungeon areas. In game dungeon maps will be great and all...but to give us a sneak peak at THIS out of all things? Wow.

What other diaries have we had the privilege of reading? New dwarf quest! Lets take a look. http://www.runescape.com/kbase/view.ws? ... ry_dwarf02 Now, here I have linked to you the SECOND installment of this exciting diary. When I saw this news update, I was expecting to open this baby up, see some pencil drawings of some short drunk guys, maybe some type of concept art for new monsters. What to I get to know instead? 1.) He says that he came up with a concept. 2.) He says the requirements are going to possibly be an inch above the other dwarf quests. 3.) This quest is not going to be a big finale of the series, in fact he is pretty sure there will be at least another quest after this one before the series could end. 4.) Months away from this update even having a chance of being seen. 5.) Basically, no work has been done so far.

Overall quite the exciting read.........right?

This isn't what the players want. We want to know that somebody, right now, is modeling the dragon pickaxe. We want to hear stories of game testers viciously battling eachother in new mini games. We want to hear about new monsters being tested and evaluated, additions and balancing issues with new skills/items/etc. We don't want to read about nerds pushing papers that are related to content that is multiple MONTHS away from release. Maybe this kind of crap would fly if these diaries were coming out every day...but so far I have gotten the impression that there is nothing promising going on at Jagex Ltd. What else do we know? They recently "missed" the 150th quest and were forced to release the chosen commander instead. Friday marks ONE MONTH since the release of Chosen Commander...how many complications did their 150th quest have? It is now a month off schedule and we have not yet heard anything about it. Where are the development diaries on this? THIS is the kind of crap we want to hear about...

A THIRD of the year is going to be gone soon, and I feel that the progress that has been made this year is abysmal. Typically Jagex likes to start the year off strong, what with the kids being inside for the winter. You decide. Working hard? Or hardly working?

Those updates wouldn't be nearly exciting if it was a frequent thing.

I completely agree with you pretty much all those points, so far Jagex hasn't provided much for useful updates this year. But when it comes to the dev diarys they're releasing I actually enjoy reading them and understanding the process required to make the content they're developing. With that said there is far less of these diarys coming out than I imagined.

As to how I can handle it, thats simple for me. I'm far from where I want my account skill-wise; there's still a lot of content for me to obtain/use so I don't get bored. And since I dislike questing there's also many quests that I can devote my time to once I do get a little bored of skilling.

This is actually why I'd love to see Jagex release some truly high leveled content in the near future (for skills level 80+). For players like me when the updates are slim we can focus on many different older updates to distract us, but players like you have your hands tied with what to do.

What keeps me interested? The tons and tons of content already in the game? Jeese. We do get updates almost every week now, and all the improvements made really make a difference.

I'm looking at this, and I think you paid Membership for the wrong reasons.

First, the thing that keeps me interested in this game is not what is coming on the horizon, but the remaining things that are left unfulfilled by my account. I'm not an "update junkie", where I feel my $6 is justified by updates; I take a more conservative approach, and consider what's already there as "enough to earn my cash", and the updates as a little incentive.

Next, explain what you mean by "innovative creativity". There are many people that take a subjective stance to this, and I'd like to hear your take. What's left to introduce, an item to make you only go there once or twice, an exp incentive, or both? You should also consider that this game has radically changed from when you were in middle school. What was new back then was never seen or done before; what's new now is starting to get tiresome.

Also, what do you think the developers have been working on lately? They haven't had time to churn out quest sequels like they did back in '04 and '05; I mean, Devious Minds is still left totally unresolved. So? The whole point of the Dev Diary was to give you an insight on how the process is going up to that point, not as a timetable of what's to come (a-la BTS) or a progress report (the older dev diaries). I'm a little stunned that you're disappointed in the requirements...what's so hard about the Dwarf quest up to this point that would mandate that you be some soft of Legend? Nothing yet.

Your last paragraph further reinforces my point about you being an "update junkie". You only care about what the future holds, and you're just not satisfied with the game in its current state. Chosen Commander was an alright choice for 150 (although it was admitted it wasn't *the* 150th, no big deal there if you ask me), and programs can have many issues with them that take months to resolve.

While I feel that Jagex's updates to date have not been whiz-bang, they haven't just been sitting on their hands. These upgrades might mean that older skills and content will finally get looked at in depth, such as modifying Mining (before we EVER breathe another word about the Dragon pickaxe, FIX MINING FIRST), or adjusting the rewards for Shades of Mort'ton, or even the Blast Furnace.

You've got to accept the little stuff as it comes, and appreciate what you've got. You didn't, so you're obviously upset. I do feel that Jagex is doing something right with their updates for the first time since RS2 (fixing stuff instead of just adding new stuff that gets abandoned just as quickly). It's a shame you can't feel the same way, but go ahead and enjoy your summer-long sabbatical.

id prefer the old new big updates....

i agree with all the points myweaponsg00d has made their has been few updates, and the development diary's have been a sack of crap. the old monthly thingy was far better it was more regular and gave us more updates.

i hope that things will pick up soon because i know i'm not the only ones annoyed about this and wheres mobilising armies?

its been 1/4 of a year since they mentioned it.

they've only promised stuff.

what keeps me going? my goal of 99 woodcutting and the fact that p2p still has a lot of new things i have yet to do.

Maybe you were just playing too much, thats what happens to a lot people that get bored of the game. If you don't find it interesting anymore than just leave it at that, no sense in looking for something to make you want to renew your membership. Just forget about it and if you ever feel like playing again then go for it.

I play whenever its convenient to, I don't make time for runescape and if that means not playing for a few weeks then that's fine by me, but whenever I do play I dont get bored because I usually come back to something new or can continue on with whatever goal I have.

I'm hoping they are simply spending more time to test the quests and games etc before releasing them.

Lets highlight recent failures because of lack of bug testing, etc, and rushing to release something thats not complete.

[hide=]Stealing creation.

1. Bug which lets you wield a bow with a shield.

2. Random bugs which don't allow you to join the game.

3. Bug which allows people to get insane amount of points.

4. Rewards were so hopeless they had to change them.

5. XP in the game, a stupid idea considering you get free runes and can telegrab.

When guthix sleeps.

1. Failure to properly price D claws, its pretty obvious that with such a powerful spec and small supply it would be worth more than 200k.

2. Failure to properly price D plate, instant crash right after it came out.

3. Elite black knight, and dagon hai armor, pretty self explanatory, but this is probably as much players fault than jagex.

PVP worlds.

1. Insufficient information about drops at start.

2. Somewhat flawed drop system.

3. People air striking/using flowers for drop potential EVERYWHERE, it took them months to respond, even then its still bad.

4. Pjers everywhere, and its relatively simple to fix, so why not fix it?

Soul wars.

1. A million freeloaders, Not easy to fix, but not very hard to see this as a problem.

2. Flawed system of winning, you have to have the obelisk to have any chance of winning, so the way to "win" is simply to rush the obelisk, and stay there.[/hide]

Now, what would you rather, more updates like (see above) Or, less updates, properly done.

I know what i want.

O.O

Yeah i kinda know what you mean and i would probably agree if i was a high level and had already done most of the fun stuff to do. But there have been lots of small updates recently that have made the game far less annoying and i think those are decent updates.

I think that updates this year would feel better if the did BTS again, at least then the updates annouced get some hype and people look forward to them instead of just being thrust on us, yes its a suprise but so far nothing has been worth a it.

i'm a long time player too and i've enjoyed runescape over the years. i would like to think the new and continuing player has a lot to do and a lot of entertainment and fun to be had.

saying that, my main beef with runescape is, it seems they listen to feedback too much for my taste; i mean they are the game developers and a lot of updates are made due to whiny feedback. and it's quite annoying, as a long time player and a player in general, that items such as granite and summoning 2nds, can be devalued as a result of lazy player suggestions.

i really wish they'd spend A LOT LESS TIME reading the jagex forum mod's summaries and just get on with creating game content. i dont mind them revisiting things to make them that much better but to take a poll and give everything xp rewards as a result; just grinds my nerves a little. the majority of people in general have their heads up their [wagon] and wouldnt know what they wanted, so dont even ask them; or use the results of polls as a qualification for game content when the best interest of the game is not served. just because some people want something doesnt mean it makes the game better.

if i had to point out a single thing that puts me off runescape atm it's the damn complainers; complaining about anything and everything at every turn, whether there is an update or no update. i'm sick of complaining people. and at this stage i dont think the wheels can be turned; these complainers have been given some legitimacy and believe their impact on the game to be beneficial, but i strongly disagree.

also, to comment on a point another person made on this thread; that if we get less updates that means better quality assurance; that is fallacious reasoning and is not a fact. truthfully the quality assurance has sucked very often of late and many game updates have been more to please not those interested in the game but the people that want a quick way to either get rich or get their stats up. some good in that but imo it hasnt been balanced very well. and magic is completely overlooked and i'm fed up with that. but are they working hard? yes i do beleive they are working very hard and i think we have some good stuff to look forward to. even if some of the stuff has either been dragged on or polluted by a non game centered focus policy for updates; where they look to placate those that dont want a challenge which leads to sacrificing game integrity. and i've had trouble with this post so i'll leave it at that.

adding this; another thing is the simple fact that jagex does set the prices for items more or less if they listen to complaining players and the fact that so many players devalue items by selling at lowest price just adds to the problems. i mean i set my own prices right? nope cant do that when the majority of players lack patience. and when merchants can influence jagex as they do it's really quite sad, given that merchants really have very little value in this game and do not even participate in even a small percentage of the existing game as it is.

a little rambling but it pretty much sums up how i feel right now about the game. but i am optimistic. ::'

I really couldn't care less about a new quest every week. The existing content is for me, a pretty high lvled player, already more than enough.

I still have lots of goals to achieve, and there are still lots of minigames that I enjoy, so I dont see any problems for me soon (the only reason I'd quit (temporarily) is if I play too much for a while and suddenly get a burn out / bored feeling).

I don't play this game because of new updates. I don't mind them, but I like it how it is already. I play because I want to improve my account, and the satisfaction of achieving a level/goal after working on it for a while.

Besides, clan chats make everything a lot more fun.

The occasional new update is a good thing. But the break from the endless spew of one-off quest areas and paperback content has been nice.

IOW, I don't feel like I have exhausted the old content yet.

I would recommend you join a clan or group to go out and DO things. Get into a clan that has activities every day, and yes their are some that have more than one a day, every day.

If you play the game by yourself, it often gets cut and dry and people only play for updates, which sounds like your situation. My advice is to join a clan, or a community, go out in the game, and DO stuff with them. Half the enjoyment of playing Runescape is doing some activity with someone else.

When you start playing actively with groups, It becomes more about the people you are playing with, and not the content you are playing on. This makes old content in the game essentially "new" and "fun" every time.

My Advice? Don't play for the updates, get involved, and DON'T do things that are boring to you. If grinding skills is boring, stand around G.E. and talk with people for hours. If Runescape is boring to you, don't play it so often. Take a break and play Runescape maybe 1-2 hours a day, and play some other games. So many people expect everyone to be skilling at the most efficiency raising levels or GP. Runescape is much much more than Skills, Updates, or GP, if you let it be.

I keep interested b/c there's still alot of things that I am able to do.

Anyway, think about what you are saying. You want more NEW updates. Since January 2009, with the exception of March, 2 pieces of new content were released in each month, and in April, there has so far been 1 and a holiday event (Which I can consider a temporary update). Now look at the few months before that. There were holiday events and 1 or 2 updates, along with more improvements. Actually, looking back on updates, they look like nothing has changed in terms of updates.

Also, think about what would happen if too much was released in a short period of time: they would run out of things to update and something would be overpowered/too fast to train.

The development diaries ARE useful, they show the difficulty in coming out with this new content you want so much.

I admit, the real 150th quest may have had complications, but if the now are not pressed to a time limit (Aniversery of RS2), they can also make it better. Do you know why Osman was teleported away in RFD? its because they didn't have time to insert his portion. Now, they don't have to rush AND if they want, they can insert more parts to it.

You want to hear that someone is modeling a dragon pickaxe? Great! What do you want to hear about it? YOu do realize, however, that they couldn't say much as they are likely wanting to keep the time of the update a surprise. Once they post a Dev. Diary, people will be guessing how long the creation might take and start ranting if it is not done by then. Also, are the Chaos elemental and the chat messages of Mod Gerhard no enough for you?

If you're bored with the game, just don't play, its pretty simple. And posting about your boredom on a forum FOR THAT GAME is not going to help you.

i lost the drive for this game ages ago, nothing but grinding left considering i've basically done everything possible. only reason i've played for the last couple of months was when my friends texted me to get on for a pvp war.

even new content like soul wars isn't enough to keep me interested.

i honestly couldn't care if they come out with new armor, dragon war hammer, pickaxe, etc etc.

What?

I've played very little over the last few months myself, as a player who is mainly interested in the combat side of things, I feel I've done everything that it has to offer in that regard. With 93 slayer I have no reason to train it other than to get 99, 96 mage means I can do every spell currently in the game, I have high enough prayer for every single spell, the only combat skill I still have something to get out of is summoning but to get that up requires grinding slayer pretty much.

I've slain all the monsters in the game (besides Corporeal Beast) multiple times, I used to enjoy killing Mithril Dragons but since the release of PvP worlds that's now pointless, tormented demons are fun, however I have no drive to kill them, I don't need money as I don't really plan on levelling any of my skills at this point so that rules out GWD as something to do also.

I've done all the high end content Jagex has to offer as well as all the quests leaving me with only skilling to do, something I'm not too fond of. There's one piece of content I've been waiting for for over 5 years now, randomly generated scenarios. That update, if done correctly could bring life back into the game for me and many other players, having a dungeon or something generated for you and a group of friends based on your levels would be fantastic. However, I doubt we'll be seeing that any time soon.

I'll still subscribe to the game, I'll still check out the new content and maybe Jagex will surprise us and bring out some new content that actually has some lasting appeal to it unlike 90% of the updates we get.

I agree with you on mostly all of your points, i've recently taken a 3 month break from runescape (i'm now back to playing) And have had a sudden rush of interest in the game, Eg: Ton's of quest's i want to get on with, bandos chestplate to save up for, more mini-games and places to explore ect.. Maybe you should consider taking a break from runescape until you regain interest in it ::'

Im with Vincent I have played this game since Feb.2001 lots of things have changed but there are tons and tons of things to do. There are many minigames i havent even tried out yet. Heck i havn't even made it back to fishing trawler since rs2 came out. I really don't like tons and tons of updates and im glad there hasn't been a quest released everyother week. The game is huge and there is tons of things to do. Stop whining and complaining about everything no one forces you to play and if you don't like then don't play.

A lot of people are reading my post and making it say what you want it to say. I'm not saying that there aren't things TO DO but there is little that I haven't done. Sure I could get more skills to 99 (even though most of them would be pointless, as far as gameplay is concerned). Sure, I could go spend more countless hours at castle wars. But I have already done all that enough that it just isn't a reason for me to keep playing this game.

If you own a game like Legend of Zelda, you CAN go around killing stuff after you've beaten all the dungeons...but you probably won't want to because there isn't really a reason.

And to all who are saying "update junkie" etc...This is a game I pay a monthly membership fee for. The whole point of a subscription to a game is to keep players paying for the constant work that dev's are doing. It is the entire point of having MMO communities, to live in a game world that is constantly changing in innovative and exciting ways.

And, to one poster, my definition of innovative would be something along the lines of...if you are coming out with new mini game rewards, don't use a simple system of points in the mini game = turned in for direct exp. It has been done a few times and it really just gets old. New armor, new tools, anything along those lines would be creative.

Maybe you've just beaten this game and it's time to quit? You would be in an extremely small minority, but perhaps that's where you are. The game is so huge right now that, for most people, the dizzing array of things to do is almost overwhelming. It probably just does not make economic sense for Jagex to spend a lot of resources to collect five bucks per month from those very few people who have beaten the game. By your own admission, you've loved the game for a long time. It's been cheap entertainment for you. All good things must come to an end. Perhaps it's time to move on? Just a thought.

Well, I think what people were trying to say is.. Making an argument saying "I'm bored and completed all I want to do, so I would like there to be more updates to what I personally want to keep me playing" is not a justifiable argument.

Like you said with your Zelda Example:

If you own a game like Legend of Zelda, you CAN go around killing stuff after you've beaten all the dungeons...but you probably won't want to because there isn't really a reason.

No game is meant to last forever, or completely satisfy you. Just like you would finish the Zelda game, you could move onto another game. Try switching to something else for awhile, take members off and take a break for a few weeks.

When you come back, you will be refreshed and find a fair amount of new content available to you. Enough to keep you interested for awhile at least. Sometimes you don't realize how much you miss something until its gone for awhile.

Switching to another game for awhile might simply be the best course of action. Not even another MMORPG, but something completely different.
