Needs Moar Filters

Recommended Posts

Now I'm all for the Tif censor, I really think it does a good job of censoring out when I need to do a bit of swearing to the point where I'm actually writing 'cabbage'. But there's something that annoys me about the filter, is that it only caters for American English words.

Now we Brits have colourful swears, some of which aren't really picked up by the censor. One of my most frequent annoyances is having to write [wagon] instead of the English dialect of arsehole. Exactly the same meaning, but those couple of letters is almost a way of avoiding the filter.

I'm just curious if the Tif admins think this is much of a problem (there aren't really many words that don't get filtered that I would use).

I actually haven't ever noticed, but I'm not one to be offended by swearing. I do know it is quite easy to add censored words, I suppose it's up to the admins.

It's very easy to add filters, but really, it's up to the administrators to decide if this word deserves a place on the filter list.

I can't recall a single case where I've seen someone call someone else an arsehole and I'm sure if they have that post was removed and the user warned.

If the word was used a lot more commonly then I can see the need to add it to the filter.

Pretty much what he said. Words are added to the censor when they are inappropriate and we see them being abused. While the word you pointed out IS inappropriate, it is not being abused. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen it being used. If it is used, however, you may report the post and a moderator will take the necessary actions (the user would probably be warned or the post may just be edited, depending on context). But the word is not used often enough to be added to the censor. I guess it could be, but that would be up to the admins.

Okay, I was just wondering if you guys though it was really a problem, though it is a bit of an annoyance to some users.

Most North Americans don't even consider that word offensive, lol - unless they're highly religious or have 'unique' moral values.

I know I don't consider it offensive really, but I think there are swear words that are more used in the UK that aren't covered... I won't name them for obvious reasons.

The only shortfall that our current filter suffers from is not blocking those sad 4chan phrases and memes which seem to be the current fad among the youth of today. :|

And blocking out specific words magically solves all that, and assures they dissapear from the forums? Filters never achieve such a thing.

Exactly. As long as it isn't rude and/or insulting per se, I personally have no problem with all the memes.

I don't mind censoring more words. But to be perfectly honest, I've never found 'arsehole' offensive. It's like a toned down version of the one that people use so constantly. And as someone as mentioned above, I haven't seen too many uncensored swears used too much so I'd say it's doing a perfect job for now.

One can always try.

Memes are stupid.
