e: Bumping this up due to a free Open beta that is open now.

Downloading it as we speak, I'll give my opinions on it tomorrow.

Imagine all of the ideas in your head for the perfect MMORPG.

Done yet? Perhaps this looks something like it:

Mortal Online

[hide=Large image]29272089.jpg[/hide]

uar2HH4X-D4

[1] The biggest selling points of the game are:

  • * As an introduction, here is what the Mortal Online team says their game is not: "There are no levels, no experience points, no starting classes, no quests, no 3rd person view, no NPCs with big exclamation marks over their heads, no global chat channels, no flashing numbers when you hit something, no respawning bosses, no instances, no pocketable mounts, no virtual restrictions for where you can go or not, no auto-loot, no predestined player path where it turns out you're The Chosen One, no automated auction house, no auto-respawn, no NPCs you "can't attack", no bears that drop gold coins or dragons that drop swords, and no loot bags impossible for other players to open." I think they've made their point.

    * The combat features no targeting and requires you to aim your melee slashes, ranged projectiles and shield blocks manually. Enemies have hitboxes over different parts of their bodies, and attacking certain areas can have an additional effect (e.g. hitting an arm might make them drop their weapon). The view is first-person.

    * Full loot PvP. If you kill someone you can take all their stuff. If you steal, or kill a player that is flagged as innocent (an idea that is not elaborated on in the presentation) you may be flagged as a murderer and hunted by city guards.

    * Although there's no leveling, skills can be improved through repeated use. However, skills that are used in PvP have a cap on them so that it is mostly about skill and not playing time.

    * There are primary skills, like Swordmanship, and secondary skills which are a subset of the primaries. Only primary skills will have much of an impact on PvP.

    * Every item in the game can be crafted. If you find an item, you can "reverse-engineer" it to work out how it would be crafted, and then do so.

    * Player Housing will be similar to Star Wars Galaxies, in that the world is empty to begin with and will fill with houses as people create them. In other words, a building is unique, and is only there because someone built it; they are not reusable instance portals that any number of people use as their home.

    * You can mix your race within your species. For example, just as people in our world could have a Chinese father and a German mother, your Mortal Online character can combine any two races and these choices will affect appearance as well as attributes.

    * Mounts can not simply be unsummoned. They can wander off or be stolen if you don't watch them, and they can also be used in combat.

    * Seamless continents with no zoning. Navigation won't be easy at first, as there is no radar and mapmaking is actually a craft to be mastered.

    * Bosses won't respawn, and members of the Mortal Online team can assume the role of any important NPC to provide unique events.

Mortal online, in a nutshell, is the game darkfall should have been. The differences are already very clear if you watch the video -- mortal online is backed by a much more stable and professional company and it's already showing.

Now I know that there will be a lot of discussion about this MMORPG because, quite honestly, it's a lot different than what one would expect. You need to look at it with an open mind and try to not attach any stigmas or ideas from games such as World of Warcraft to it as it is a different beast all together.

Unlike darkfall Mortal Online is a game to keep your eye on big time, one that even in early beta testing is showing much more promise and polish than darkfall.

So thoughts?

Will it be a monthly fee or something like starcraft? (Didnt have time to read everything)

Sounds pretty cool if they can pull it off well, I MIGHT check it out if they finish.

Hey Nadril, did we switch roles here? :)

I'm going to remain as you did on DarkFall though. Skeptical. :)

Mortal Online & another game are two to watch out for and the three (darkfall) all promised to provide a unique experience. So until it's released I can't trust anything as I know how DF actually was upon release, without the intended content or promised and hyped content.

DID THEY SAY FREEEEEEEEEEEE?

Looks similar to an MMO Mount & Blade. If it's free (or I have a job and it isn't turribly expensive) I'm in.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

They did say free, but I think that might be referring to the gameplay. As in you can do just about anything you want.

Unless that's what you meant too.

Sure sounds a lot like Darkfall, sure looks a lot better. I'm in the same boat (insert your jokes here) as Lent, if it indeed is F2P, of course I'm going to check it out.

And I was in the computer lab at school today, and I swear someone was on the official website for this. :-s

I don't want to de-rail this topic (take it to PM if you want), but Skatedog, if you still play, I thought you might like to know I've picked up Combat Arms again. ;)

NOT FREE! Well according to their FAQs.

http://www.mortalonline.com/faq#q9

Q: How much will it cost?

A: Mortal Online will require a monthly fee similar to other MMORPGs on the market

It does look good though. I'm loving that "reverse-engineer" idea of theirs.

Be glad there is a fee, you never got anything good for free.(Or in the very least its rare and probably comes with a catch)

That said this intrigue's me. First point is the creation of epic amounts of loot. Anyone here remember Borderlands for the consoles? That game only has around 1,000,000 weapon combination and I about jizzed myself. Now the only thing is if medieval weapons can be customized enough to give the feel of a modified AK with a 50 round drum that fires explosive shots and little to no recoil. If it can this will be amazing.(Edit Here, ties in with my later ideas below)

Now, when I first started reading I was a bit skeptical about the no levels.(Think Guild Wars) Then I watched the youtube video and started thinking of FPS melee ala Counter Strike with RPG skills and I got excited. Imagine taking on these

while in the first person and having half your team having to defend the zealots who are desperately trying to defend there deity. Even simple combat sounds amazing as the first person aspect should bring on some nice adrenaline rushes in good fights.

The mounts also sound interesting. In WoW one of the [cabbage]tiest aspects I remember was that I had this bad [wagon] mount and more or less I could do nothing with it, not even swim with it.(Pre patch 3.1) So this should be interesting. Especially when you think about Guilds actually getting mounts enough to kill a town and still house a building.(Mumakil)

Which brings me to another thought, I like the idea of true sandbox at the start that evolves into a player run world. If this is successful(Like half of WoW's subscribers at least semi active) we could see player established hierarchy. What I mean by this is that the first players through the door will evolve and build into a group, and eventually build there own player run town. Several years down the line this will be its own city and to the new players it would be venerated and respected. True sandbox dreams right here.

One thing I hope is that the weapons and gear make up for lack of levels. I'll be honest one of the joys I get from MMO's is the climb through levels only to get to a plateau and be elevated to the next level through whatever bonus you got. Now that I think about it I think this is the way they plan to go. Not only does it set up the reward but because you always have the chance to be killed it sets up the honor of being able to don the enemies gear. To go back to my player run city idea how cool would it be to have an ambitious newbie sneak in and assassinate the king that has been running it since beta only to walk out into the crowd wearing the king's armor and having his head on a pike.

I can truly say this is a MMO I'm excited to hear about and hope it succeeds my expectations.

Yeah, I'll probably pay for this, it looks pretty damn cool. I mean, the completely open environment and shared-world aspect really turns me on. Shows that there will really be consequences. Although I hope that NPCs like shopkeepers will be replaced or something eventually, and hire guards or something in the shop. And the guards should be ridiculously powerful. You murder someone near a guard, BOOM headshot.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I remember hearing about this and having some concerns about the sandbox aspect. Specifically, that it's not as sandbox as you'd think. I haven't played beta on it yet, but that's something I want to see.

And no, guards should NOT be godlike. They should be powerful, yes, but in proportion to the monetary and political backing of the town in question. More money or influence, better guards. This should be a simple concept. And considering that most newbie spots will be well within areas like that, gankers shouldn't be a huge problem. Just give them some sensible AI, make them SOMEWHAT realistic. As in, there's patrols throughout the controlled area (might vary from spot to spot), guards can't be easily distracted, etc.

Actually, I was at the store one day, and they were giving out these awesomely huge free pumpkin pie samples. It was the best pumpkin pie I have EVER had... God yeah...

On topic: I feel like I've played this before.

It looks alright, but there is just something about the lack of a leveling system that bugs me.

Dude, levelling systems have become either overused, or are under-developed in how they could work fabulously.

The skill system isn't that much different, but I'm glad that they're capping it in PvP so no1 is going to have an advantage except for skill.

Yeah, most games just throw them in there for the hell of it but it's always something that's appealed to me in games. I like making tangible progress. I'm not buying the whole "player skill" thing yet because for all we know, it could be based on mostly luck. Mario Party was meant to be all about skill, but it's more luck based if you ask me. It really just depends on how well they use the systems.

  • 8 months later...

Sounds really interesting and I'd love to give it a try.. it's times like these that I curse myself for having a Mac computer.

And I deleted my Bootcamp Windows partition, but it sucks anyway.

Will probably try out the beta for S&G's, but will not play if there is a monthly fee. Looks like a great game though.

Side note: the Thursar look like the people from Avatar (Navi?).

I don't really fancy paying for Open Beta.

I'm not sure if you really have to pay for it. I'll chime in if you do have to pay for it.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

When I tried creating an account, I had to select a pay package. The lowest was around $34, the most expensive was $99.

Well, I downloaded the client and updated it. But every time I launch the game nothing happens. I checked in task manager and an exe called NowGame[Caution: Executable File] appears in processes and then closes a few seconds later.

I'm going to venture a guess that this has something to do with the fact that I'm running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. This OS has given me nothing but crap since I've installed it

No issues here, Windows 7 64 bit.

That being said servers are down so I can't actually create a character right now. First impression is that the character models are ugly as hell.

I got it working. Had to update my graphics driver and update the physics engine.

That said, I'm probably not going to want to play this until they get an option to censor the nudity. Sure it's great that they geared this toward more mature players, such is sorely needed in the MMO market. But I'd at least like the option to not see it. Yeah I'm almost 20 but I'm still in college and at home and it would be kinda awkward playing it around anyone :)
