Why oh why! Higher levels left in the dust!

Ok, so I was mining, as usual, in the Zarfot spot. There is a 133 with 97 mining in the 3 rocks just south of me. Then, some [wagon] logs in, and starts to crash the 133. Low and behold, this [wagon] has only 80 mining, yet he is beating the 133 to every rock, or at least 4 out of 5. So the 133 gets pissed and moves. I decide to try and crash the [wagon]. My 89 vs his 80. And guess what?! He still wins 4/5! What kind of logic is this?! Shouldn't a higher level in a skill beat a lower level in that same skill?!

Can someone explain why this happens oh so very often? Particularly in mining, since it's the only gathering skill with resources that only produce 1 raw material per spawn.

As I have 60 mining, I know how you feel.

Mining is totally random, the coding for it is also.

It generates a random odd that you will get the ore, which is influenced by your mining level.

So really, it totally depends on how lucky you are.

but the frequency of higher players not getting the ore and losing it to lower ones is completely opposite of what it should be. im beginning to think that your level has no effect, its just a number.... :?

He beats you 1/5 times or 20% of the time and your crying? He's 9 levels lower then you do you think because your 89 and he's 80 that you should have 100% of the ores over him?

never said i was complaining, or else this'd be in rants. GFSON.

im asking, whats with the RNG and the weightedness (word?) of your level to your ability to gather materials faster

He could be drinking/eating something to increase his Mining level?

no titan, and even if he had a stout (m), he'd only have 82 mining, and last i check 89 is still > 82

What were you mining?

If it was iron/something quickly mined then it is most likely a case of his internet connection/clicking speed of the rocks being faster - iron as you probably know will usually only take one click to mine, so if you're too slow to click it you won't have chance to get the ore cause it won't be there.

Unless of course you were mining something mithril or higher, then it is either bad luck or bad game design.

He said granite, and this is truly a rant. I'm sorry you were getting 80%, but isn't it your fault for crashing the guy? Two wrongs don't exactly make a right.

im crashing him for crashing someone else. if you kill a murderer, does it make you a murderer? maybe so, but you have a legitimate reason.

and yea, it mightve been the connection. it was a british server, and im on US east

When you say 1/5 do you mean he was winning one time out of every five times?

If so I can't see what you're crying about.

i mean as in 1/5 times i get the rock, 4/5 he does

I'm not familiar with mining granite, I'm assuming it is pretty much 1 click to mine it?

In that case I'd say it were internet connection affecting their ability to click or they are just naturally faster at clicking.

Oh.

That's [bleep]ed up.

I wanted to come back and laugh at the 'left in the dust' thing because i thought you were getting 80% of them.

Yeah I think this is just 'luck' (odds).

Like how a level 80 could hypothetically kill a level 120 in pvp.

the thing is, sometimes you 1 hit, sometimes you take as long as it does for gold. it makes no sense....

Had the exact same thing today. He was 68, I was 77, and still be got about 9/10 ores. Now, there may be something wrong here, but luckily these moments are rare and short. Most of the time the person with the highest level wins, and I'm satisfied with that.

Due to my epic stats, I have now started WGS (but I still hate spoilers).

I have experienced this myself, I've been on both sides. (Someone lower than myself getting all the ores, someone higher than myself getting less of the ores).

Maybe get Jagex to give more information on how mining works. Would be helpful to understand the process, cause this just seems like a messed up system.

The best way to explain it is; Think of mining like the exact reverse of chopping down a tree while WC'ing.

Every "game tick" you swing at the rock, you have a chance to mine it. This chance is based on your current mining level and a few outside factors. This is why sometimes it only takes one "tick" to mine a rock and sometimes takes many.

Sometimes a player with a lower level will win many times in a row due to their "ticks" being less than yours. This could go on for a long time, but on an overall average of thousands of swings, the player with the higher level is more likley to get more rocks.

Hope that clears some things up.

It is messed up, but it's far too late to change anything now. If they change one skill they'd have to change all the others that have the random factor. Think of all the angry feedback they'd get from players who got level 99 while it was still random.

Thanks, I figured it may be something similar to this.

Thanks for the info.

maybe he had a slightly faster computer than either of you, so his command hit the server first, and because both of you are high enough to mine the rock in 1 or 2 hits, he got it first?

I'm gonna be walking down an alley in varrock, and walka is going to walk up to me in a trench coat and say "psst.. hey man, wanna buy some sara brew"

walka92- retired with 99 in attack, strength, defence, health, magic, ranged, prayer and herblore and 137 combat. some day i may return to claim 138 combat, but alas, that time has not yet come

This is issue is really down to the randomness of the mining skill and also a question of the quality of internet connection someone has....I admit I believe it is highly unfair that some @ 99 mining could still be beaten by someone @ lvl 41 mining with a rune pickaxe on an iron ore....

I say a major mining update is in order....
