Why can't adults drink?

Recommended Posts

i never understood age restrictions....

"hey you are 20? sorry you are too young to have a drink"

next day...

"hey you are 21 now? have fun"

maybe there should be age guidelines? personally, i am 18, so i think i should be able to have a drink with my cigar. ive gotten drunk about 3 times in my life so far. twice in a vegas hotel room and once at a house. i dont think it is so much the age, but the maturity. we need a liquor drinking license or something.

perhaps more education on the subject? i know the health problems alcohol causes. (my family has a history of alcoholism.) so i make sure i moderate my intake, that of which is pretty much 2-3 times a year.

a touchy subject. it is the people who cant handle themselves under the influence that ruin it for the rest. i am biased, mainly because i can go to canada right now and drink all i want, same with many countries in europe... it is annoying when i talk to a friend (who is my age) in quebec about his rums and assortment of vodkas...

was it colbert who said "i support lowering the drinking age to 18 -after my daughter turns 21."

I havn't read all posts so sorry if I go over things.

The uk goverment (I live in the uk) is pathetic. They wont let us have kids till were 16 (so going by what the goverment says thats kids raising kids who cant even get a job!)

We can drive at 17 (we could kill somebody)

At 18 we can get a tattoo (how is getting a tattoo worse than driving a 2 tonne bullet?) we can drink so basically poison ourselves (I will explain in a second) and watch porn/gory movies (these are worse than raising a family as a kid and driving a a killing machine)

Alcohol effects the front of the brain 1st, thats what I assume (I've never been drunk) is the good feeling, next the next section in is slightly poisoned following that is near the base of the brain gets poisoned. Nice to know really.

Having said that alcohol does NOT kill brain cells, it was made up so people would stop drinking it.

Some scientists belive moderate drinking helps cognitive function.

If you feed a small amount of alcohol to mice there brains grows slightly!

A hangover is the brain shrinking due to dehydration causing the brain to pull on the membrane that covers the brain, this is what hurts. The brain itself cannot feel pain. Watch all the hannibal films, if you don't belive me! :D

Theres some facts for you all to chew on

The kids we govern (I'm a UK senator) are pathetic. They want to have kids before 16 (so going by what the kids say they want to be raising kids when they can't even get a job!)

In all seriousness, your post just sounds like something a 14 year old kid would say to support being able to what they want at the age they want. The reason why there are many things you can't do until 18 is because that is the age of consent. The government say at that age you are completely responsible for your actions and that your parents are no longer raising you.

The reason why they allow you to drive from a younger age than drink is so that you hopefully get some driving experience before you start drinking, it would be much better then driving and drinking in the same year. I would move if drinking and driving were legal at the same age.

You are defeating your own argument by talking about in moderation, what difference does it make to you if there is that wait before you can do something you only believe in doing in moderation?

So he brings up drinking responsibly and you use that against him? Something's wrong with this picture.

Would it honestly be better for his argument to say he wanted to drink everyday? -.-

The attitude of the American youth towards alcohol is really surprising. It's just such a huge part of our culture in Britain that many comments here seem really strange.

True, I see the cultural differences on quite a lot of threads so I always tend to have a look at peoples locations when I'm reading their posts. In particular, the political and religious threads tend to highlight the differences since America tends to be a little to the right of Europe/UK in terms of politics and they're a bit more reigious (stereotypically). It makes things interesting though.

I know what you're saying but that doesn't make sense. You'd rather want him to wait 3 years and then drink everyday than start right now and drink a few times a year?

Besides, the person wanting the legalization is not necessarily always affected. For example, take a look at the homosexuality thread. There are many straight people that are for gay marriage. Why? Because they feel it's an unjust rule, even if it doesn't directly affect them. I could be wrong, but he did say he never got drunk before.

I've been drinking from a young age - only small amounts, like really diluted wine (aka 'homeopathic wine' haha) but it's taught me my limits.

Which is great, because now that I know where the limit is, I don't waste alcohol getting more drunk than I already am.

You mean tap water? Yeah, have it all the time.

Jokes aside, I agree with your post. As I understand it, French, Italian and other European cultures introduce their kids to alcohol at a young age and teach them to respect it, which could help to lower rates of alcohol misuse and abuse in those countries.

Agreed, I wish it was that way for the U.S as well.

I'm 14 and I drink wine alot... Not to get drunk, but because I like wine.

That is where I believe it all goes wrong, there is a huge taboo over it, so it the "don't touch that button" deal.

Then kids drink it, and then just wanna get drunk, go drive home to go get hungover. Bang, car crash.

Bunch of moms saying "alcohol is bad" but it's the constant taboo-ing of sex and alcohol that is causing most of the damage, IMHO.

In the UK the drinking age is 18. It disappoints me at university that everything is centred around drinking. Almost all events start or end in a pub/club. I understand that in America it is widespread that university students drink, however at least it means that official events aren't centred around it.

Ideally I'd say that freedom to drink should be granted at 18 years old when one is free to do everything else that a legal adult can do, but it does seem to have had the effect here that drinking has become a major part of our culture.

I'm fairly certain someone has posted this already, but since I'm too lazy to look, here it is.

The drinking age is 21 because of something within the body. I guess alcohol inhibits the growth and well-being of that thing until it is 21 years old. I don't know too much about the subject, but that is what I have heard.

I think the US government is a little bit whack. Many of the other countries are able to drink at 18, either way the rules which alcohol will prevent you from harming others (IF FOLLOWED) where as ciggeretes do hurt others. I think the laws regarding drugs ( Since that is what Alcohol is ) should be the same across the board, if we can truly call ourselves a democracy we should be able to put whatever substance we want into our bodies as long as we don't harm others.

Personally i support lowering the drinking age to 18 :D

People that don't get drunk are quite boring.

Completely wrong. Some people are just more fun drunk.

Personally, I couldn't care about the drinking age. I can get alcohol easily enough. Hell, I drink with family, I'm open about it with my parents, and I'm one of the few that keeps myself under control. My general rule is that I have to be able to walk home (Often a 30 min walk sober, so about 1 hour). I'd say this is where you get the best of both worlds. You can still control yourself if you really want to, you get the fuzzy feeling that I'd definitely say is good. You're tipsy, so that's something to laugh at with your friends. If there's an emergency you can react appropriately. NO HANGOVER. Two thirds of a mickey and I'm there, it's wonderful

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

AMERICA IS NOT A DEMOCRACY.

We are a republic. To get a law passed, you need to elect people who will make the laws you want. Sometimes we will have a popular vote over a bill, but only if the government decides to do so. If you think you live in a democracy, you are mistaken.

Smoking or joining the military doesn't make you do stupid things that can harm you or others... :|

Joining the military does.

Alcohol is fantastic and everyone should be allowed it.

And if you smoke with other not smoking people in the area, you will give them a free gift, an extra chance on lungcancer.

I agree. Just effectively blocking out everything to do with it just makes it even worse and creates more of a desire for the said things.

Excuse me? Driving home with a hangover leads to a car crash now?

Are you experience in the matter (with hungovers)? People don't drive home "for" a hungover and hungovers certainly doesn't lead car accidents. Being intoxicated while driving does.
