Hostility against Religion

Barihawk

Recommended Posts

Recently on these boards, I've noticed a large amount of hostility towards religion of any type, and many of the statements alarm me as all religion seems to be lumped together as if it were a singular unit.

I am curious as to why this is happening and I just thought I'd host a little survey/discussion.

Please answer the questions honestly. If you feel the need to comment on another user's post, please wait until at least five other users have posted (whether they post survey responses or discussion). This is a hot topic on these boards (I mean that in the sense that it is controversial) and I hope that we can have at least a moderately mature discussion.

I ask that in discussion, we are neither seeking to prove or disprove any idea or belief. This is a discussion on hostility towards religion, not who is right or what's what. I hope that we can stay on topic.

Feel free to N/A any question you do not feel comfortable answering. I would prefer to get the age and level of education, however, as well as at least your nation of residence.

I was going to fill this out, and I'm usually pretty open about volunteering personal information, but I just don't feel publishing all of this information for the world to see and don't see the relevancy in many of these questions.

What exactly will this lump of information serve? I'm sure you will find that prejudice is mostly held by those of lesser immaturity or acculturation with other cultures, which will generally be the younger, less-educated audience. But as for what you define as "hostility", I'm not so sure. As in any debates, hostility can be formed if unmitigated by self-awareness, levelheadedness, and impartiality, all of which I wouldn't ascribe to any age group or educational background.

[hide=]I chose to exclude personal information as I believe that this will turn into age or educational separation of opinions. I am old enough to drink by UK standards.

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion?

-by choice?

Yes.

-What kind of worship?

I have been to Christian, Jewish, and Hindu services.

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance?

No, it was for cultural studies.

2. Do you consider yourself religious?

No, I do not.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity?

I believe there to be an ultimate deity, yes.

4. Is there an afterlife?

No.

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell)

I am unsure what you define as existence.

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of?

-What?

Yes, explained in question one.

-Your thoughts on the experience

It was interesting to learn the foundations of different religions by witnessing their beliefs.

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions?

Morals are brought about commonly by various religions, I believe that these beliefs have ultimately brought about radical changes to society. I believe it to be for the better.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices.

I do not believe I know enough about the subject to hold a firm opinion.

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific.

I do not believe I know enough about the subject to hold a firm opinion. Buddhism

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I do not believe I know enough about the subject to hold a firm opinion.

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I do not believe I know enough about the subject to hold a firm opinion.

12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I do not believe I know enough about the subject to hold a firm opinion.

13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship.

I do not feel as if anything is wrong with such practices. Yet many openly criticize these practices and bring up subjective debates they know nothing of.

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts.

I would classify myself as an ignostic atheist. Should there be a supreme being I doubt worship was what was planned.

15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them?

Refer to question 14.

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours?

No, but I do enjoy religious subjects.

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify.

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call.

No, which is why I chose to opt out of the first questions asked.

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

In principle I believe it does/did.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Yes, it fuels demand for other non-religious questions.

21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

I am not sure at this point.

22. Does non-religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

I am not sure at this point.

23. Please list your experience with sexual education.

I have always been taught abstinence with birth control as an alternative course of action should the need arise.

24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind?

Yes.

25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?"

Devotion. It is not something that need be proved. I do not believe it to be synonymous with the word 'like.'

26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship?

-Is sex involved?

Yes and yes.

27. Are you single/committed relationship/married?

Single, at the present.

28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)?

Sex does not prove anything nor is it something to aspire to. It simply comes up in a relationship when two people are ready, so to speak.

29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)?

No.

30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana?

Yes. I do not habitually use the substance nor do I continue to partake in its use. I do not believe I ever got stoned. I felt as though I was not myself; I was willing to do other things I was not accustom to prior to use.

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol?

Yes.

-Do you drink socially or alone? Or both?

Both.

-Have you ever been drunk?

No.

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana [should be alcohol]?

I do not believe so. Perhaps mildly.

32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter?

No.

33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers)

No.

34. Have you ever regretted using alcohol? (excluding hangovers)

No.

35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)?

Yes.[/hide]

I find it funny how you addressed my first topic in your questions.

There was also a typo on question 31.

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol?

-Do you drink socially or alone? Or both?

-Have you ever been drunk?

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana?

To be honest, I'm simply curious. It will also help me to see who's being hostile as a result of ignorance rather than the sake of their education/maturity. And third, I think it will stir some good conversation. This is getting to be a problem and we need to get it into the open before it simply becomes the next bigotry (which we have in good supply if you take a look at the slavery topic). On that chime, maturity in discussion is hard to come by these days.

And feel free to N/A anything you don't feel comfortable answering, l0rd. The questions were taken from a survey a professor gave us some time in my college experience, probably for a psychology or religious studies class. I found it when moving and thought this might be an interesting topic.

Might as well do mine now:

Educational level:

-if secondary or below, what level?

-If at a university/college, what level and what is your major/minor course of study? Some graduate studies, History/Secondary Education

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion? Yes

-by choice? Yes and no. At first I was kind of forced to go by virtue of not being alone at home.

-What kind of worship? Christian Protestant (several different denominations), Jewish, Hindu, Islam, Catholic

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance? I choose to regularly attend a Methodist church

2. Do you consider yourself religious? Yes I do. I have committed much thought and I personally have come to the conclusion that their is more logic and rationality that there is a God than there is to disprove such a notion.

-Please explain in two or three sentences.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity? See #2

-Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief?

4. Is there an afterlife? Yes

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell) It was created by a supreme being

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of? Yes

-What? Jewish, Catholic, Islam, Hindu

-Your thoughts on the experience? I thought it was interesting to see how other religions worked. I found the Hindu worship to be particularly beautiful and a very spiritual experience.

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. I haven't given much thought to these.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices. I could write enough that Firefox would lag and die.

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. I find both Hindu and Bhuddism to be very interesting religions with very devout followers who care for others despite any personal convictions. I think all religions could learn to do like this. Islam (traditional) is a nice faith. I do not care for Daoism or Shinto.

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I've studied a few of these religions in courses on Africa, and they are very interesting. However, there are an incredible number and it's hard to describe them without resorting to lumping them all together.

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I have not enough experience in studying these.

12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I don't have the experience to make a statement.

13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship.

I think some of the Celtic religions are fairly interesting and I enjoy reading about them. Wiccan is a little weird to me, mostly because of the people I've met that practice it. Satanic worship for me, being Christian, is a little uncomfortable to deal with.

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts.

To each his own, but many I meet and talk with seem to close their minds to any thought other than their own, which I guess is to be expected by the definition.

15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them?

I know several agnostics and I like the fact that they at least try to be open minded about things they are unsure about. One of my close friends from high school tried out half of the world's major religions in his own spiritual quest and concluded that he was unsure as to the existence of a higher being, but certainly did not rule out the possibility. In my mind, this is how everyone should approach religion or lack thereof. By personal observation and choice.

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours? Yes.

-elaborate. I feel that some groups both religious and not go too far in their attempts to convert the other to their side.

-what group were they? what group were you? Mostly Baptists and atheists. I considered myself an annoyed observer.

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify. Christianity - Methodist

-Did you consciously choose to follow this belief? Yes.

-Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief? No.

-Did you personally research (as in personally in the first person) options before coming to this belief? Yes.

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call. Absolutely not. However, ignorance can lead to people following or not following religion for the wrong reasons (ie because my parents did it)

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Most certainly. Many religious groups are devoted to putting others first and bettering the lives of countless millions.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

A certain amount of speculation and rational thought is always healthy. It moves knowledge forward and forces people to rethink what they believe in.

21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Religion can be abused by individuals to further their goals, as it is such a powerful medium. This is not limited to terrorism. Some groups of churches preach hatred and attempt to gather followers by the threat of a terrible fate, causing followers to spend time worrying about their own selfish desires in the next life than the betterment of others (ie not being Christlike, for example)

22. Does non-religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Sometimes it does lead to ignorance and bigotry, but like religion, it is not the norm.

23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences. I got sexual education in school first, which was terribly inadequate. I also got sex education at church which to be honest did a much better job about explaining things.

-If at a university/college, what level and what is your major/minor course of study? BA Publishing

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion? Yes

-by choice? No

-What kind of worship? Easter/Christmas Services

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance?

2. Do you consider yourself religious?

-Please explain in two or three sentences.

I wouldn't say I was religious. I can't bring myself to believe in God but I accept that we really have no way of knowing either way. I'd more accurately be described as a skeptical agnostic.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity?

-Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief?

4. Is there an afterlife? Again, I think we as people have no real way of knowing but I don't think so.

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell) I generally accept the idea of evolution and the big bang theory although I have to admit I don't have a scientific mind and couldn't make a scientific argument for the big bang personally (although I don't doubt that many people can).

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of?Yes

-What? I've attended Easter/Christmas Services through schools that I've attended in earlier years

-Your thoughts on the experience I don't mind the event or anything, I just disliked being forced to go and the slight feeling of discomfort at being at an event that I didn't believe in.

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. Live and let live - I don't care what people believe in as long as it doesn't hurt others or infringe on their righs(directly or indirectly) and as long as those beliefs aren't forced on anyone else. To me, all religion (or all beliefs) are a personal choice.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices. As above

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. As above

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. As above

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. As above

12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. As above

13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship. As above

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts. As above

15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them? I feel it is the only logical position to take because we can't tell whether or not a God(s) exists since science cannot prove there is no God in some form and that faith can't conclusively prove that there is a God. However, I do acknowledge that faith is precisely that - a faith that isn't necessarily subject to logic or reason that people can't just explain or describe but instead feel emotionally and spiritually.

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours?

-elaborate

-what group were they? what group were you?

I've chastised people who believe differently when they've been intolerant of others or when they've tried to force their beliefs down my throat - this has happened both online and in real life and across a range of belief groups.

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify.

-Did you consciously choose to follow this belief? N/a

-Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief? N/a

-Did you personally research (as in personally in the first person) options before coming to this belief? N/a

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgement call. There is no relation in my opinion - Einstein & Da Vinci were religious and two of the greatest minds in history, you get morons in every group and likewise you get intelligent people in every group.

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.I think it does people good as individuals but I'm torn over whether it makes society better. Certain conflicts are exacerbated by religion (Israel/Palestine, Northern Ireland etc) but it could be argued that these conflicts would exist regardless because they stem from intolerance of people's religions rather than religion itself.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. I don't think it has a positive or negative impact really.

21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. See #19

22. Does non-religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. No

23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences. I was given some sex education in school from both a scientific and relationship perspective. We were taught about birth control and how to use it, about STDs, how a child is created/born but also what sex means within a relationship and why it was important to wait until when you are ready to have sex. As for at home, it wasn't a topic of conversation, if it wa brought up we'd talk about it but there was a sense of embarrassment about talking about it in our house.

24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind? Please do not list your sexual experiences. A yes or no will suffice. Yes

25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?" It's unquantifiable

26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship? Yes

-Is sex involved? Yes

27. Are you single/committed relationship/married? Single

28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)? A way of get closer to somebody you get along with

29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)?Yes

-if so, what? N/A

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of an illicit substance? No

30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana? Yes

-Do you habitually use this substance?

-Have you ever been "stoned?" Yes

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana? No

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol? [/b]Yes[/b]

-Do you drink socially or alone? Or both? Socially

-Have you ever been drunk? Yes

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of alcohol? Yes

32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter? Yes

33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers) No

34. Have you ever regretted using alcohol? (excluding hangovers) No

35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)? Yes[/hide]

Done.

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance? Parental Guidance (thank go that stopped)

2. Do you consider yourself religious?

No. I dont really follow any religion. I accept other religions as long as they dont force it on others or laugh and make fun of others religions without able to do so to their own.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity?

-Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief? That cannot be known

4. Is there an afterlife? See above

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell)

Big bang, evolution.

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of?

-What? Church for Catholicism

-Your thoughts on the experience. Boring as hell. I didnt care much for it.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices.

9-15 All are fine with me as long as they dont try and force other people into the religion and are able to make fun of their own religion if they criticize others religions.

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours?

Yes, all the time. I seem to be the only Agnostic (people at my school seem to think Agnostic = Atheist) But they always make fun of Jews, Muslims ect when they are christian. But as soon as I poke fun at their religion they get all butt hurt. Mostly by the same age people in high school.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Not necessarily good but not bad. No wars (that I know of) have been fought over Atheist or Anosticism. And people dont do stupid things in the name of religions (People who burned out their eyes looking for Jesus in the Sun)

Great topic, took me 30 minutes to fill out these answers. Haven't really reflected on these type of questions in a while.

Nation (do not give a city): Republic Of Ireland

Educational level:

-if secondary or below, what level? Currently in Secondary, will go onto University.

-If at a university/college, what level and what is your major/minor course of study? ~~~

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion? Yes

-by choice? Sometimes I wanted to, others I didn't. I don't like attending standard Sunday mass, but I wont mind attending Christmas Eve mass and Christmas day mass as it's more of a family event (whole extended family attends the same church) than a day of religious celebration.

-What kind of worship? Catholicism.

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance? No, I never regularly attended it.

2. Do you consider yourself religious? No.

-Please explain in two or three sentences. I've explored the thought of being religious, and religions are either to contradicting or to hateful for me to follow them. Christianity preaches "Love thy neighbor" yet shuns Homosexuality, Islam preaches a higher plain of "Paradise" if you die protecting the stature of Islam.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity? I don't know, my opinion is, either way something came out of nowhere, a God or the material required for the big bang.

-Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief? I don't hold a specific belief, I just have a few "rational" ideas.

4. Is there an afterlife? Possibly, I think there is a "spiritual paradise", where you live on Earth eternally where you want, you can experience whatever you want for free, you live a life where you dictate what occurs. The only people present on this "Earth", are those who you choose, your friends and family. Personally till this point, my Heaven would be my life right now, without the education aspect, or the control of parents. Essentially, living your Summer holidays year round, without having a form of supervision telling you what to do. Yet though, my parents would still exist obviously enough, I just have the freedom to dictate my own life on "paradise".

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell) Honestly, I don't know, and I'd rather not voice an opinion on something if I'm not educated on it, personally though, if asked, I'll usually follow the theories of Evolution and the Big Bang.

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of? No.

-What? ~~~

-Your thoughts on the experience ~~~~

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. I view them as all other religions, a group of people lead to believe there religion is somehow the "right" religion and their "God" is the one true god, while other religions are people lead astray.

I think Islam, is seriously portrayed in a Negative light though, yes it has a lot of Extremists, but it also has many many good people. The people who seem to voice the most hate against them, probably couldn't count the amount of Muslims they know personally on one hand.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices. The same as the above, without the paragraph on the negative portrayal of Islam.

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. Although I don't know much about it, I find the main principles of Buddhism interesting, I know nothing though about the Chinese religion and any of their beliefs.

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Well, I seem to get a lot of Jehovah's witnesses knocking on my door, and I find what they preach not only extremely logic defying, but irritating to listen to. I know very little of tribal religions, some of their practices are interesting though, praising their own forms of gods for different things, protection for "Evil spirits", for rain, for a good harvest, for a good hunt etc.

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Other than Catholicism, I don't know of any major religion in South America. So it would be the same view as Judeo-Christian religions.

12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. I know nothing of Aboriginal religions other than some of the Inca ceremonies, although very bloody and wasteful, their ceremonies and practices were interesting none the less.

13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship. I know very little of these as well, so I wont voice an opinion on it.

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts. I view Atheism as harmless, as long as it's not enforced on other people, like I view many religions. Although I'm not religious, I don't have a problem with religions, I don't like religious people who try to force their beliefs on me, the same as how a Christian wouldn't like to have Atheism forced on them.

What I do like about Atheism is, I think it's roughly 15-20% (But I could be completely wrong) of the world are Atheist, yet can even 2% of civil wars, military coups, full fledged wars etc of the last say, 100 years, be contributed to Atheism?

15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them? I think it's a wise decision, as it harms no one and leaves a person open to belief. Personally, I'd view myself as an Agnostic, I think there is some form of a higher power or a supreme being exists, yet there is no religion that rationally explains this "God".

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours? Yes

-elaborate: A Catholic preacher started ranting at me and question me aggressively as to why I was an agnostic on Dublin's mainstreet, so I destroyed any points he had with counter arguments. If you're going to argue religious beliefs, I hold the view that you should at least be aware of what you're mention, and if you're going to quote something, you might as well include the points I.e Leviticus 18:22

-what group were they? what group were you? As I mentioned, I was an Agnostic, he was a Catholic preacher.

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify. No, I'm not a member of a religion.

-Did you consciously choose to follow this belief? ~~~~~

-Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief? ~~~~~~

-Did you personally research (as in personally in the first person) options before coming to this belief? ~~~~~~

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call. Well personally, main religious people I know have never explored their faith or developed their own opinion differing from the church, while many of the more "intelligent" people seem to be Atheist. Intelligence is only a measure of good test results, but doesn't make a person any better than another person.

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. It does good and it does bad, when it preaches love and affection for others it does good, when it preaches against others and others belief, it does bad. It is fair to say, religious beliefs and clashes have caused a vast amount of wars.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. I generally see two types of Atheists, the egotistic who lives to amass material possessions and is very intelligent but inconsiderate to others. Then there is also the modest Atheist, one who simply can't follow the teachings of a religion, yet lives a gentle and modest lifestlye, like that of many religious believers.

21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. I answered this in question 19.

22. Does non-religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Well, two of the most evil men in history were Atheist, Stalin and Hitler. Although, it's safe to say Atheistic beliefs lead to them becoming what they were. So no, I'd say it does very little damage if it does any significant damage at all.

23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences. I received the full story school education at 12, religion up until then never even mentioned it to me (in the form of priests etc), by the time I was 10, thanks to the internet and late night TV, I knew how to do it and to wear a condom for when I eventually did do it. I knew most of what I needed to know before any form of Adult ever discussed it with me.

24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind? Please do not list your sexual experiences. A yes or no will suffice. Yes.

25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?". I don't know, it's hard to opinionate it. I'm only 16, I've felt very little of what's called "Love", one moment your "Loved", next week you're watching your "Love" with someone else, as if your relationship and "Love" never existed. I think love though, is the feeling a couple will get, when they realise how right for each other they are.

26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship? Yes, I've been in couple.

-Is sex involved? Yes it was.

27. Are you single/committed relationship/married? Single as of now.

28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)? I don't feel it has a specific place, I feel once a couple is ready they'll usually have sex, and after that it's just a "fun thing" two people who like each other will do.

29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)? Yes

-if so, what? BZP, MDMA, Ketamine.

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of an illicit substance? No, as none cause those type of reactions from personal experience, although I did lose track of time on BZP. If used responsibly and is sourced from a reliable source, recreational drugs in my view can be used safely for enjoyment. I haven't had a bad experience with them as of yet.

30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana? Yes

-Do you habitually use this substance? I did when I was 15

-Have you ever been "stoned?" Yes

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana? No, I've felt very "chilled" and relaxed on it to a point where I just lied in silence with my friends for 3 hours, randomly laughing, but I've never lost control of my actions where I was a danger to myself or others. I've personally never seen that reaction occur with Marijuana use.

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol? Yes

-Do you drink socially or alone? Or both? Socially, never alone.

-Have you ever been drunk? Yes.

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of alcohol? I've been "drunk" many times, where I've swayed, been more open and willing to try things, talked crap etc, but I've never been "out of control" of myself due to it, I've always been in a position to get home safely without assistance etc.

32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter? No.

33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers) No, I've voiced my opinion already on responsible use.

34. Have you ever regretted using alcohol? (excluding hangovers) I've talked crap and done things where the next morning I've thought 'damn that was pretty stupid', but I haven't done anything I hugely regret.

35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)? Yes, many times, no point in turning Agnostic / Atheist if you wont give it some serious thought first.[/hide]

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion? yes

-by choice? Willingly, yes. My own idea? No.

-What kind of worship? Ash Wednesday, Easter, possibly Christmas once.

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance? No.

2. Do you consider yourself religious? No.

-Please explain in two or three sentences. Never have in my life. I burst forth from my mother's uterus a nonreligious lad. Not raised specifically that way, but not raised with any ideas.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity? No.

-Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief?

4. Is there an afterlife? No, and I love how you word these questions as definitives.

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell) I don't know, really. It could have been the Big Bang- there's certainly evidence to support it. But it might have been something else, though I can't imagine what. But that doesn't mean I'm going to make up an answer.

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of? Yes.

-What? All of them. See #1

-Your thoughts on the experience Ash Wednesday was, to me, just weird. I understood the significance of the ash to the forehand, but the priest got me fairly hard. Unless that's normal. Easter was just the priest telling moral stories that happened to him, which definitely made the experience more real, and slightly enjoyable. And I got the wine, which was, for my young self, quite a thrill before I tasted it.

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. Not sure what this means, exactly. No thoughts.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices. There are some completely bat [cabbage] ones, and some more sane ones. Other than that, no real specifics.

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. Like Buddhism? That's something I can kind of get behind. No wars ever waged in the name of the Buddha. And there's no real omnipotent deity for it, either, gets it some points.

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. No thoughts.

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. No thoughts

12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. see previous 2.

13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship. I do nothing but laugh at Satanists. Pagan religous are, if I recall, what early forms of Christianity were modelled on, to easily convert people. Personally, if I were to be recruited to any religion, it would be the Cult of Cthulhu. Which is actually practised. Whether or not you consider that Satanism, though, is up to you.

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts. I myself am an Athiest, so I guess you could say I have positive thoughts on it.

15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them? My thoughts? I think you're confusing Agnosticism with Deism, and it really doesn't hold much more appeal to me, though it gets points for actual rationality. Agnosticism, on the other hand, I believe is the [kitty] way out of it. You either know there is, or there isn't. Just make your decision.

Woops! I misread the question. I thought you were talking about Deism.

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours? Somewhat.

-elaborate I've laughed in the face of door-to-door Mormons and called them crazy, and I've gotten into a heated debate with my religious grandmother at a restaurant once. We got some looks.

-what group were they? what group were you? Mormons, and I'm actually not sure. Don't think she ever told me.

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify. Athiesm.

-Did you consciously choose to follow this belief? Yes. My case was that I wasn't raised one way or the other, and I found it on my own. This does not mean that the absence of religious upbringing decided my choice for me; my sister was raised the same way and is some form of devout Christian. I thinm she tries to follow them all, though, since she's done Lent and other Catholic things but seems to lean more towards a Protestant faith. We were truly able to find our own answers, and she still tries to indoctrinate me.

-Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief? Nope.

-Did you personally research (as in personally in the first person) options before coming to this belief? Not at first; I was too young then to think of it. I just knew what I knew of science and how religion contradicts it. Now that I'm older and can (as well as being on the internet- never heard the end of the argument) I've seen both sides many a time.

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call. I don't know. I do know, though, that many of the more... whorish girls I know/have known have leaned more often towards some form of religion. Devoutly sometimes, even as they're [bleep]tin' it up. You can decideif, for the purpose of this survey, promiscuity and intelligence are connected. From what I've seen, it is.

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. It can. Missionary groups in poor African countries can rebuild villages, etc. but then again, so can the Peace Corps.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Setting aside the ethical issues of religion, especially with such things as stem cell research, abortion, etc. can make scientific research to benefit humanity much easier, as well as make easier the lives of people that can't afford a baby. But that's just the absence of religion; whether non-religion itself has done anything, I wouldn't know.

21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. 3 numbers, mate: 9/11. And more: Jihad by Muslim groups. Westboro Baptist Church and their anti-gay -troop protests. Everything concerning homosexuality's oppression, really. The Holocaust was, to a degree, religiously driven. Pretty much everything happening with Israel.

22. Does non-religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anything, since there's really nothing that can be done in the name of non-religion. Except hate crimes against religious areas.

23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences. The usual: videos on how puberty changes things in school, education on STDs and how they can be avoided, stuff like that in school. Short lecture waaay back by my parents, and a few since. They also bought me a book once, but the only thing I learned was that testicle size can denote puberty and they have devices that measure that. Nothing teaching abstinence, though.

24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind? Please do not list your sexual experiences. A yes or no will suffice. I like to say I live an aescetic lifestyle of self-deprivation and discipline. It makes the "no" answer sound more noble.

25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?" I'm going to quote Calvin & Hobbes, here, because I really think it gets it across: A series of biochemical reactions designed to ensure our genes are passed on to future generations and continue the human race. It's far more effective in that regard than random promiscuity.

26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship? In the past, yes.

-Is sex involved? No.

27. Are you single/committed relationship/married? Single. Wouldn't say "And lovin' it", but it's not bad.

28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)? Go for it if you want, if not, don't. Anytime's fine.

29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)? No.

-if so, what?

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of an illicit substance?

30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana? Ascetic lifestyle, remember? ;)

-Do you habitually use this substance?

-Have you ever been "stoned?"

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana?

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol? Not more than a sip or two every few months or so. So no, really.

-Do you drink socially or alone? Or both?

-Have you ever been drunk?

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of alcohol?

32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter? Guess.

33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers) see #34

34. Have you ever regretted using alcohol? (excluding hangovers) see #33

35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)? Yes, quite often, really. Though most of it is more reasons why it's a ludicrous concept.[/hide]

Glad to be of assistance.

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion? Yes.

-by choice? Yes.

-What kind of worship? Non-Denominational Christianity.

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance? By choice, but driven by a self-imposed sense of obligation.

2. Do you consider yourself religious? No.

-Please explain in two or three sentences. I would call myself Agnostic, in that I do not feel that I have ound sufficient evidence to bring myself to believe in the existence of any deity. I would also call myself Atheistic, in that until I find such evidence, I choose not to believe in the existence of any deity.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity? There could very well be, but if so, they have not manifested themselves to me in such a way as to make me believe in them.

-Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief? No.

4. Is there an afterlife? I don't know.

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell) Through Evolution. However, I have done no individual research in this area as of yet, so I'm not really in a position to answer.

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of? Yes.

-What? Christianity after renouncing the religion.

-Your thoughts on the experience: I found it to be overly organised and manufactured, in that the program reflected much more on weekly "rituals" than on "listening to the Holy Spirit".

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. I haven't spent very much time looking at them. I find that most, if not all religions have aspects of truth and wisdom in them, but an equal amount of foolishness as well. I must reinforce, though, that I haven't spent much time looking at them.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices. Same as above, with the exception that I have spent a fair amount of time looking at Christianity.

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific. I haven't spent enough time looking at them to form an educated opinion.

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Same as above.

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Same as above.

12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Same as above.

13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship. For the most part, same as above. However, I have found myself to agree with quite a few aspects of LaVeyan (non-theistic) Satanism. With that said, I find the rituals curious, and I doubt I would ever follow the religion.

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts. I of course agree with it to an extent. However, I find some foolishness to the mind-set of most Atheists in completely rejecting even the posibility of a Supreme Being.

15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them? I view that particular branch of Agnosticism to be ignorant. However, I feel it relevant to mention that there are other branches of Agnosticism, and I find myself following one of those other branches.

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours? No.

-elaborate

-what group were they? what group were you?

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify.

-Did you consciously choose to follow this belief? Yes.

-Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief? Yes.

I don't think so. To be breif, there are a lot of stupid Christians and other theists, but there are also a lot of stupid Atheists. (I mentioned Christianity only because it is the most dominant religion where I live.)

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes. In a physical sense, there are numerous charities, safe-houses, and the like that have been formed by Catholic or Christian organisations. In a non-physical sense, it gives guidelines, meaningfulness, and hope to its followers.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes, though perhaps not as much as religion does. I struggle to think of any charity organisations formed by Atheists. However, in a non-physical sense, it gives reason and a healthy questioning attitude.

21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes. Intense discrimination against homosexuals (from Islam and Christianity) and people of other races (Westboro Baptist Church, for an extreme example). Many wars have been started due to religion, both in the past and recently. Though it has without a doubt made contributions in the area, religion has also been a road-block for scientific progression, both in the past (Galileo?) and recently (Stem Cell Research).

22. Does non-religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations. Yes, though perhaps not as much as religion does. Neo-Nazis and other race-hate groups often have an Atheistic affiliation.

23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences. Parents, religion, and personal research (I'm not being seedy with that one).

24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind? Please do not list your sexual experiences. A yes or no will suffice. Yes.

25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?" To care so deeply for someone that you would still jump in front of a bullet for them even after they had done something to make you stop "liking" them at the time.

26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship? Yes.

-Is sex involved? Yes, though it is a small part of the relationship to be honest.

27. Are you single/committed relationship/married? Commited relationship.

28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)? It is special, and bonds people emotionally, or "spiritually" if you want to put it that way. Most people (myself included, regrettably) undervalue sex.

29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)? No.

-if so, what?

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of an illicit substance?

30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana? No.

-Do you habitually use this substance?

-Have you ever been "stoned?"

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana?

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol? Yes.

-Do you drink socially or alone? Or both? Both, though I prefer to drink in small groups, and I now refrain from drinking at large gatherings.

-Have you ever been drunk? Yes.

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of alcohol? Regrettably, yes. For this reason, I now no longer drink at large gatherings.

32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter? To an extent. I have only had sex with one person, but I wish we had waited a bit longer.

33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers) N/A.

34. Have you ever regretted using alcohol? (excluding hangovers) Yes, on one occasion.

35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)? Yes, I think about it and discuss it with others quite frequently.[/hide]

Any chance you can expand the definition of Agnosticism somewhat?

Cool.

Whoah, now that you bring it up I have never heard that definition of agnosticism.

For me the only way I heard is you cannot know whether a divine being exists.

Great topic Barihawk!

Age:21

State (US only, do not give a city):

Nation (do not give a city):Sweden

Educational level:

-if secondary or below, what level?

-If at a university/college, what level and what is your major/minor course of study?

Finished "gymnasiet" (highschool?), going to university next year.

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion?

-by choice?

-What kind of worship?

-Did you regularly attend this worship, by choice or parental guidance?

No.

2. Do you consider yourself religious?

-Please explain in two or three sentences.

No, i do not. I consider myself "free". I believe that there are some good ideas and some weird ones in religion in general.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity?

-Did said god, gods, or supreme being create the Universe, according to your belief?

I'm agnostic. If "god" were to show up infront of me, i accept it, but i still won't follow the religion. I consider the big-bang as the most probable answer.

4. Is there an afterlife?

Would be nice. But i don't think so. In an afterlife, i'd probably be stuck somewhere between heaven and hell.

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell)

As i said, big-bang and evolution. However, i don't consider this as the absolute answer, there might be something else, but it's the one making most sense to me.

6. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion that you do not consider yourself a part of?

-What?

-Your thoughts on the experience

I have not.

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific.

Said it before. Doesn't matter if it's Christianity or Hindu, i maintain that there are some good ideas and some weird ones.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices.

I prefer them to say, Islam.

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific.

I know far too little to give a proper answer about them.

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I don't fear Islam, but i don't like that media portrays it as a "love religion". Honor-murders, stoning, force-marriage to people (including ones family). If i were to grade religions on a scale on how much i like them, Islam would come stone-dead last.

I am critical of it. Because in my country, it's a bit of a no-go zone to be critical of it.

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I know too little about them to answer.

Coming from a country that used to have Norse paganism a long time ago, i would say i'm quite friendly towards it. I suppose, it would be the first choice for me. The problem with it, is that schools teach far too little of it. If you want to learn about, you have no other option than to do self-studies. I feel that this can ultimatly lead to people forgetting about in the future.

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts.

I feel that you should be open to accept that there could be something out there that we do not have scientific proof of.

15. What are your thoughts on agnosticism, the belief that a supreme being(s) exists, but the individual chooses not to worship it/them?

This is where i consider to belong. I don't reject the idea of that there could be something out there, but i still wouldn't worship god-x as i want to be free (so to speak).

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours?

-elaborate

-what group were they? what group were you?

Nope. I have no problem with what you believe is the thruth. As long as you don't try to convert me into a follower, i am your friend.

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify.

-Did you consciously choose to follow this belief? Yes.

-Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief? No, i have had the freedom to choose whatever when i grew up.

-Did you personally research (as in personally in the first person) options before coming to this belief? When i've learnt about religions, and then looked at myself and my beliefs, i have chosen as Agnosticism the most fitting. I however don't consider Agnosticism a religion.

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call.

I don't consider anyone, no matter what you believe, as a less IQ person. I however think that people who blindly follow without questioning should take a look or two at themselves.

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good/bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Both. There has been, and is, much killing in the words of religion. In the end i feel that it does more harm than good.

Short answer, don't feel like writing a long one.

Cut together it as one.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good/bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Good. I feel that many decisions in past and present has been greatly affected by religion in a bad way. The world would be much better without religion, as religious beliefs constantly get in the way in various ways (i am thinking of e.g. immigration).

I am too tired to give proper answer.

Cut together it as one.

23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences.

Had some classes in it in 8th - 9th grade (when you're about 15 years old). With what i know + having some classes, i think it's enough knowledge.

24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind? Please do not list your sexual experiences. A yes or no will suffice.

Yes.

25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?"

Impossible to answer. I mean, i absolutely love music. But if i get kids, i will love them aswell, but in a totally different way.

Was out partying earlier today with some friends, and we had a pint at this south-american music place. There were alot of 50+ couples there dancing, and it just looked so nice... Being older, out with your gal, dancing and some drinks... They all looked like there were really "in love".

26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship? Single now.

-Is sex involved? It was, yes.

27. Are you single/committed relationship/married?

Single. I would love to get married if i meet "my girl"... Whenever that will be (hopefully around 30).

28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)?

It's important, no doubt. But i feel it shouldn't be the main/only thing.

29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)?

-if so, what? I sniffed glue a couple of times when i was 13 or so, if that counts lol. Only tested it, nothing really happend.

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of an illicit substance? Read above.

30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana? Yes.

-Do you habitually use this substance? No.

-Have you ever been "stoned?" Couple of times.

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of marijuana? Nope.

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol? Yes.

-Do you drink socially or alone? Or both? Can have a beer with the dinner, but i don't "drink" alone. Mostly drink with friends.

-Have you ever been drunk? Yes.

-Have you ever lost control of your actions while under the influence of alcohol? Talked to the police once 'cause of it. Never been arrested or gotten into a (proper) fight.

32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter?

No.

33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers)

I don't think the 3 or so times i sniffed glue counts. But was it stupid? Sure.

34. Have you ever regretted using alcohol? (excluding hangovers)

Yes. Sometimes words pop out of your mouth before you think...

35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)?

I think about from time to time, but not anything deep.[/hide]

Age: 16

Nation:Canada

Educational level: Grade 10 completed

1. Have you ever attended a worship of any religion?

Yes, as a child, I think until I was about 10, then my family just stopped going. I believe we went to a Christian Protestant church. It was not my choice, but it wasn't something that bothered me much either.

2. Do you consider yourself religious?

No, I do not consider myself religious, I don't think it is possible that any religion will ever be able to describe what the 'universe' properly. I consider science a religion in this respect.

3. Is there a god, gods, or a supreme deity?

I do not know, however I find the notion of a supreme deity creating the universe much more logical than that of which science has to offer. I'd say that science is quite good at describing our surroundings in their present state, however the past brings up many problems.

4. Is there an afterlife?

I'll be sure to tell you when I find out.

5. How do you believe that existence came about? (in a nutshell)

Some being of some sort (For ease of describing, I'll refer to this being as God), decided upon a bunch of rules that every should follow. Most of them were arbitrary where they did not need to fit together. It might have taken God a long time, it might have taken God an instant, I can't say. God then decided to just create an explosion of matter from something that started the universe. God might be able to effect the world in small ways, mostly manifesting itself in chance. I haven't made my mind up on that one yet though.

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call.

People are the same regardless of what they believe. It is only those that blindly accept religion or non-religion that are less intelligent. Intelligence not only being one's ability to contribute to any action, but also one's willingness.

19-22. What effect do religion and non-religion have the on world (I condensed the four into one for my convenience)?

I think that both religion and non-religion have an overall neutral effect on the world. For all the unity that religion may bring, that same unity also creates separate groups with opposing views, leading to open conflicts. However, I think that these conflicts would happen on their own whether or not religion is involved, and that often religion is simply used as a scapegoat for the problems that exist within humans themselves by those that are non-religious. Those that are religious also use the lack of religion as a scapegoat. Those that create the scapegoat do so because they refuse to believe that humans are the same regardless of what they think, and that everyone overall has the same faults and virtues.

Essentially, religion and non-religion over time will not have any major effect on the world.

23. Please list your experience with sexual education, including but not limited to: lectures by parents, schools, religion, or non-education. Please do not list your sexual experiences.

From Grade 6 to the present (4/5 years) I have been taught about sex, puberty and all the other things associated with sexual education. I have been consistently taught that abstinence is the only method of contraception that is guaranteed to work, but that should I choose to have sex, it is very important that I use some form of contraceptive. I have been taught about condoms (Both male and female), spermicide, IUD (Inter-Uterine Device), cervical caps, 'The Pill', Norplant implants (Female hormone implants, similar to the Pill) and others, along with the ways in which they work. I have been taught basic anatomy of male and female sex organs, along with permanent contraceptive methods (Vasectomies, etc.). All this has come through school. I have learned little facts just through social life (Mostly sex tips  ), and the most that has ever been done on my parents part was a lecture or two about porn. My parents were in no way insufficient in their guidance, they picked up where the school stopped or possibly overlooked.

24. Have you engaged in sexual intercourse of any kind? Please do not list your sexual experiences. A yes or no will suffice.

No.

25. What, in your opinion, defines "love?"

I'll let you know when I figure it out.

26. Have you ever been in, or are now in, a relationship?

I am currently in a relationship, and sex is not involved, and probably won't be for at least a few months, and I am perfectly happy with it that way.

27. Are you single/committed relationship/married?

I am in a committed relationship.

28. What, in your opinion, is sex's place in a relationship (or lack of relationship)?

Sex is simply something that happens when humans want it to. Humans want sex to happen because it is who we are. Every organism needs to reproduce, and every organism wants to reproduce, as a basic instinct. Humans are different in that we can overcome these instincts, however we do still often succumb to them.

29. Have you ever partaken in an illicit substance (excluding alcohol or marijuana)?

No.

30. Have you ever partaken in marijuana?

I smoke marijuana on occasion, maybe once or twice every couple of months, and it is always socially. I have never lost control in a way that I cannot easily regain control.

31. Have you ever partaken in the consumption of alcohol?

I drink only socially, and will accept a beer whenever it's offered. I have been slightly drunk, enough that walking was a challenge, and couldn't focus on anything further than 5 feet in front of my. Just like with marijuana, I have not lost control to the point where I cannot regain it.

32. Have you ever regretted a sexual encounter?

No.

33. Have you ever regretted using an illicit substance? (excluding hangovers)

No, I do not regret using illicit substances (Including alcohol and marijuana). I avoid something if I think there is a great enough risk of me largely regretting it.

35. Have you ever given serious thought (longer than 30 minutes in a year) to the existence of a supreme being(s)?

I have spent several nights just thinking about why everything exists, and why it exists the way it does. The only answer I have ever been able to get is "Because it does".[/hide]

I quite enjoyed doing that. It made me think quite a bit about myself. Thank you, Barihawk.

There's no such thing as regret. A regret means you are unhappy with the person you are now,

and if you're unhappy with the person you are, you change yourself. That

regret will no longer be a regret, because it will help to form the new,

better you. So really, a regret isn't a regret.

It's experience.

No.

7. What are your thoughts on non Judeo-Christian Western religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific.

I wouldn't know much of them, so I cannot say. But my answer is most likely like question 8.

8. What are your thoughts on Judeo-Christian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term and that both of these groups have many subdivisions that have radically different beliefs and practices.

What they define as morals (for the most part) are good. The rest, such as following God and history, shouldn't suppose to be taken literally.

9. What are your thoughts on Asian religions? Remember that religion is a broad term so please be specific.

I wouldn't know much of them, so I cannot say. But my answer is most likely like question 8.

10. What are your thoughts on African religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I wouldn't know much of them, so I cannot say. But my answer is most likely like question 8.

11. What are your thoughts on South American religions? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I wouldn't know much of them, so I cannot say. But my answer is most likely like question 8.

12. What are your thoughts on Aboriginal religions (any native group that was displaced, such as Native Americans, Maori, Aborigines, etc)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific.

I wouldn't know much of them, so I cannot say. But my answer is most likely like question 8.

13. What are your thoughts on pagan religions (Wiccan, alternative, Satanic, and other non-traditional forms of worship)? Remember that religion is a broad term, so please be specific. Also note that many alternative and pagan practices are not affiliated with Satanic worship.

I wouldn't know much of them, so I cannot say. But my answer is most likely like question 8.

14. What are your thoughts on atheism, the belief that there is no supreme being(s)? Please remember that there are degrees to this belief, and that not all share the same thoughts.

Most logical of all beliefs.

We should need more of them.

16. Have you ever publicly chastised someone who believes in a religion/school of thought different than yours?

No.

17. If you belong to a religion or non-religion, please identify.

-Did you consciously choose to follow this belief?

-Did you belong to another belief, by choice or force, before following this belief?

No.

-Did you personally research (as in personally in the first person) options before coming to this belief?

Only thinking, considering, and philosophizing in my mind

18. Is intelligence (not IQ, but actual intelligence) correlated to one's belief in a religion or non-religion? Keep in mind that intelligence can not be measured by any science, this is simply your judgment call.

Only by how fanatic somebody is and to what extremes you are willing to go for it.

19. Does religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Yes, for the most part; but fundamentalists do not. The evil people of the world (defined by corruptness, greed, disrespect, etc) are usually not religious, so the "true-good" aspects are maintained by the common people, which is the majority. This determines that religion is favorably good. But such as I, who are not religious, can still be moraled as those who follow a religion.

20. Does non-religion, in your observation, do good in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Only with morals, like I it does. The majority having lack of religion hasn't happened in history (at least that I'm aware) so I can't say how far the world would of gone without religion; since most religions push morals onto the common folk.

21. Does religion, in your observation, do bad in the world? Please cite specific groups or denominations.

Ignorance shown in fundamentalists and how far they go, yes. But the common folk aren't fundamentalists, so the bad is not the majority.

All religion is meaningless if you cannot follow it's moral codes, the basic good of the world. It seems that Tip.It, and most reasonable people, hate it when people promote hate and oppression under the name of religion. That is all.

But, at the same time, tip.it, and most reasonable people see that 1% of religion promotes hate and oppression; and hate the other 99%.

Then they're not reasonable people are they?

I think it is unreasonable to think that, doesn't change the fact that reasonable people have that opinion (or at least act like it).

1% =/= 99%

If a reasonable person thinks 1=99, then Christ, we got a problem in our hands!

If somebody blames the entire religion over some problems, they're not being reasonable. A reasonable person might disagree with religion, but cannot hate the entire thing and its followers because some people are idiots.

It is not reasonable to think all Muslims are terrorists because a few are.

It is not reasonable to think all Christians are fundamentalist-idiots because a few are.

It is not reasonable to think unreasonable people are reasonable, because if you keep your dignity and respect, you wouldn't think unreasonably.

I feel this is worthy of a mention, because in response to question 13, a few people have already displayed ignorance as to what Satanism is. Satanism is not necessarily worshipping Satan as an actual deity. More often than not, Satanists use "Satan" symbolically. It might be worth some peoples' time to have a quick read of the above links before answering question 13.

Cool.
