This thread is just packed to the brim of fail. Unless a person has control of a botnet (which i very much doubt) then any packets of data sent to someone elses IP from their computer is going to cause them to lag out of the game too. Plus a firewall should help to reject most of these packets anyway.

I very much doubt any true DDOSing going on in Runescape. Anyone that does is setting themselves up for some major trouble with the cops. Not worth it. I don't belive it.

There have always been rumours on tipit about magical programs that you just type in someones name or ip address and click a button and it logs them out. Fact of the matter is that these just dont exist.

theres either ddosing happening OR a heap of people have randomly dced at the exact time a "pker" decides to attack them.. then kicks them from the channel saying theyve been ddosed.. i mean thats gotta be a [bleep]ing huge coincidence..

It's your own fault for using other applications that can cause you to lag, I'd laugh if they brought back trade-spamming, that was amazing lol.

Bad, 3 Hit, bad!

Besides ... skull bug was better. :P

Guys, he stated he was in a clan irc, so obviously he didn't think that clan would be some lame.

PM me the clan name?

Actually there used to be a common form of making people dc while pking (ping flood) from way back in RSC. Jagex banned people for that so I hope they do it this time.

You guy's realize that it is possible for anyone who can post here to get your ip when you view their siggy? Would just take some more effort, but you'd be none the wiser as to who did it.

Posted Image

True but there is no way of really telling who the user is. Sending someone a link to a page or an image would be enough however. Whereas IRC is alot more accurate.

Anyway its a DOS not DDos, pretty sure its just constant pinging of the rs port which could easily be done from one source.

Simple way around it is BNC or reset your IP before pking and don't visit any IRC while doing so..

So it is ping flood? Meh, how do they pinpoint your computer, I guess this would only work on people with static IP addresses? I have a shared IP though so probably it wouldn't work. I don't know much about this though.

You, me and everyone else on this forum show our IP addresses to hundreds or thousands of people we do not know. It's not private information and never will be.

Sir, you are the voice of reason.

Yeah I use IRC, MSN, whatever, people know my IP or can find out.

Mercifull, don't you remember when Lightning was ping flooded? You don't do it on one computer.

there are numerous way to protect yourself from ddosing -.-

first off if u can use irc on a seperate comp if needed -.-

also you can find port monitoring programs that if and when u get ddosd will not only reconfigure your ip (hopefully not static..its possible but i wouldnt hold our breath) and block the irc port....hopefully ull regain conection before your dead..........

i am unsure if scrambelers would work......but ud probably get kicked of irc for using one anyways...

do some research if your going to use irc..ddosing is a problem but if you do some research there is some quick and easy way to prevent it.

i h8 pjers but i wont scorn them as it is technicly fair...ive done so myself and profited....pking could be discribed as "murder"...and well when ur thevining or murdering for cash....i dont think your much to worried about rules ethics or morality to say the least ...so gtfo this whole Honorable pking crud.......in the wild your criminals..if u want laws go back to gleinor

If you have a router none of the above will really work, since its the router that gets overloaded and not your computer, and if you could monitor it by the time you have detected it you would have lost connection anyway. Also getting a new ip via ipconfig will temporary make you lose connection too. Likewise if you have 2 computers on your home network they will both still share the same external IP address. Unfortunately most home grade routers and firmware do not really provide much protection against dos attacks.

The problem with DoS attacks is between the keyboard and the chair. You can have the worlds best software protection, hardware in your network worth millions, but if the user is stupid you won't be safe. A smart user on windows is safer from infections and attacks than a stupid one on Linux. That said, it's disturbing so many people are doing it. What makes it worse is how damn easy it is to learn and do a DoS attack, I could teach an 8 year old how to do it.

I think Jagex should put up a newspost on their main page on this, including a dumbed-down guide on how to make sure you stay as safe as possible from these attacks. The only drawback is it might encourage even more people to DoS attack others. There's nothing more Jagex can really do.

People always flame rushing confusing it for pj'ing, there is a big difference. pjing requires little skill, just speccing when you get a chance and hope your loot. Rushing, however, you can wait ages before you get a suitable target, you have to constantly be on the lookout and pick the right person at the right time to rush, when you think about it i find it takes MORE skill than most forms of pking except hybridding and such so people should actually LEARN what rushing is then flame it, cause rushers are doing something a damn sight harder than real pking IMO. Also to the people saying "shouldnt have played with the command you dont know" yeah, but cant act like it isn't common people falling for this, i asked about 10-15 people, none of which knew what mode -x was, it isn't a commonly used command (obviously) and while he was a but stupid going into their chan and doing it, he's not the first/last to fall for it. Sympathy for n00b over a silly mistake, but it does become sad when people have to resort to ddosing to kill people =\ shows how horrible they probably are at real pking/just need to find some enjoyment IRL/ingame in other forms if they will actually sit there /whois 'ing pj/rushers to find one on irc and do this...Personally i dont use a BNC but thats cause i couldn't figure out how to get mine to load on my nick so i gave up =\ just avoid any chan that could be related to that i guess like #connectionlost and such, also if strangers send links try and ignore them - easier said than done i know but meh.

*k3nny, /whois doesnt give the info because the last time i got ddosed -was an idiot and opened a link, closed before it opened but i was screwed, luckily i teled as soon as the guy anciented me- i asked him after if /whois 'ing gives the info req'd cause i was curious and he said no, purely off links. Also if you ask tlp he will tell you that simple /whois commanding doesn't give the info either.*

What confuses the crap out of me, is I have an OLD computer that was on SP1 XP and Dial-Up, which was supposably the most unsafe form of internet browsing, Yet even now nothing this bad has happened.

Seems there getting desperate to do this "DOS" thing, its freaking Pixels. your breaking the law to steal pixels. that way more sad then hunting for a girlfriend on runescape and offering your mithril kite to keep her with you.

P.S. don't even DARE complain about the claws in FSM this time n33b. :?

People who say that nobody on TIF DDoS's/DoS's (whatever) has too much confidence in this player community. Some of the most highly regarded users on this site have been known to try to screw another user over. There are a hell lot more people here than you can possibly imagine that are so damn caught up in getting their precious pixels that they aren't even afraid to break the law to do it. They're so goddamn far-gone that it's pathetic. It's so damn easy to DDoS that it wouldn't do any more harm for people to openly discuss the steps that you take in doing it. Anyone and their momma can download a program meant for easy DDoS'ing or just use Cmd to ping someone. The only deterrent for them is getting caught by their ISP and then reported to the cops, but they sure the hell won't get banned for it because they know how to cover it up.

The best thing you can do if you got a denial-of-service attack is (if you have a dynamic IP) is to just reset it by unplugging your modem and waiting a minute and then plugging it back in (which will reboot it). The best way to prevent it is to just be careful who you talk to on the Net and stay away from situations that might allow them to easily see your IP with the click of a button.
