Cigarettes

What good comes out of them?

All I see is you slowly killing yourself after every inhale of smoke you take.

After seeing my parents do it for years, I now know that they only have a matter of years before they pass away from some type of lung cancer. It drives me insane.

Whenever they decide that they want to quit, they don't. My mom tried to quit smoking and drinking, and it only made her irritating.

I don't care if it relaxes your nerves or not, I would like to see my parents live to see me graduate high school.

Similar stories? Any discussion?

I'm sorry for the rant, it just bugs me.

Finally someone who agrees with me.

Besides the drinking part, my mother is the same and I worry about her health too.

Whats wrong with slowly killing yourself?

By the way, the longest person who ever lived was a chain smoker for over 100 years.

Also, I don't smoke.

personally, i'm a huge fan of the electronic cigarette. but when i'm stressed out, i love nothing more than a good old chemical ridden cigarette. it calms my nerves like nothing else that's legal. my dad has smoked for like 30-40 years, he's still alive and kicking without any major health problems. they'll most likely live to see you graduate high school just fine.

I know I am going to get flamed to hell for this, but I occasionally smoke when I am extremely stressed, I'm 14, and have since I turned 13, maybe 1-2 a month. It has a purpose to me because it helps me mentally chill, and I know 2 a month wont be nearly as bad as the 1/2 a pack a day stuff.

when i'm stressed, a hug from my mom usually does it, but smoking is just taking it to the extreme.

The only bad thing about smoking is if you have some responsibility over someone, like parents. Because if they do get gravely ill, can't go to work and support the family, or die, it leaves the child without somebody to look after him. For the children's sake, parents shouldn't smoke, or at least keep it to a bare minimum.

Otherwise, you only live once right?

Surely when you're 14 you can find tens of thousands of other ways to relax. I mean seriously it starts of saying 1 or 2 cigs a month won't hurt but then BAM! 20 years later a chain smoker is born.

Don't smoke and I hope never will. Sorry, never saw the appeal.

It's such a waste of money imo (worse when you're really addicted to them), and there's other ways of dealing with stress effectively and without killing yourself slowly.

Apparently the FDA is warning against E-Cigs.

FDA and Public Health Experts Warn About Electronic Cigarettes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that a laboratory analysis of electronic cigarette samples has found that they contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze.

Electronic cigarettes, also called e-cigarettes, are battery-operated devices that generally contain cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals. The electronic cigarette turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user.

These products are marketed and sold to young people and are readily available online and in shopping malls. In addition, these products do not contain any health warnings comparable to FDA-approved nicotine replacement products or conventional cigarettes. They are also available in different flavors, such as chocolate and mint, which may appeal to young people.

So it seems the alternative isn't better if at all.

the amounts of those are so small it doesn't matter. it is the better alternative. Nicotine itself is derived from tobacco, and thusly will contain very small trace amounts of the carcinogens, less than the nicotine patch/gum/whatever too.

These products are marketed and sold to young people and are readily available online and in shopping malls

BS. you still have to be 18 to buy it because it's still considered a cigarette.

n addition, these products do not contain any health warnings comparable to FDA-approved nicotine replacement products or conventional cigarettes. They are also available in different flavors, such as chocolate and mint, which may appeal to young people.

more BS. the kiosk next to mine has the standard FDA smoking warning on them because that is currently the only control the FDA has over them. also, OMG FLAVORS APPEAL TO EVERYONE GOD DAMMIT. NOT JUST YOUNG PEOPLE.

also, the FDA is being challenged by a ton of US doctors and stuff (don't have the article on me, not sure if it's online) to put out quantitative information about what they found, instead of saying "yeah we found them" because they'll be there in any nicotine product, just in lesser amounts depending on how pure the nicotine is.

also, the kiosk next to me at work has a report from new zealand's equivalent of the FDA from a year or so about the e-cig. it deems them exactly as they are marketed, a healthier alternative. the FDA doesn't control everything, they just want the tax money from cigarettes. if they produce quantitative information that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that e-cigs are bad, i'll eat my shoe and go back to regular cigarettes all the time.

Smoking isn't that bad. It's just that there is a massive amount of smokers out there, meaning the sample is large. The number of people who die of smoking is high, but the number of people who don't die from smoking is much higher. It's still unhealthy and I don't see much of a point to excessive smoking but the media just really pisses me off with stuff like that.

I smoke about once a week.

Really? That was the first thing you thought when you turned 18?

I get the feeling you are implying that he should be thinking about something sexual. No restrictions lifted where I live at age 18 in that regard, other than being able to legally produce, distribute, and watch pornography.

I agree with you. Smoking never got my attention, but we can't just call it horrible and ban it just because WE don't like it.

And for the whole second-hand smoke argument, I'll rather be concerned with unseen smog, C02 from factories and cars, rather than some smoke that I can easily avoid.

I thought that too at a first glance, but then again we're on the internet. All it takes is one unfiltered google search and a deletion of the history... Don't get any ideas kids. :shame:

Ot: My mom used to smoke, she liked it but never got addicted to it. One day she was like, "meh, I don't want to smoke anymore". It was pretty easy for her to quit.. :?
