i_love_burritos
As you've probably heard, El ACME Presidente Obama has over the last few days, Given a Ramadan address, message, well wishes etcetera and then also a Ramadan Feast in the State Dining Room with others to highlight the contributions of American Muslims. And in public addresses talked about what a great religion Islam is, blah blah. What is with this coddling ? I disagree with everything. Islam doesn't need any special provisions, doesn't need any feasts, doesn't need any advocates. No [ethnic group/minority/religion/race] does. Infact I see this as a cowardly act by the Obama Administration to, well, [i can't really say here on a G-rated forum] What do you think ? Is there a need for this ? Articles are everywhere, just Google it.

Giordano
Why are you complaining about the government [wagon]-kissing Ramadan-celebrating Muslims? Fixed. Stop with these "Giving thanks/remembering" things. To Muslims, to Blacks, to Asians, to Latinos. It really means absolutely nothing. Giordano
Some people actually care about and respect the cultures of others. I respect them. It's just that there's no need of the government congratulating folks on having a belief. Where's my Obama speech on Nickism? i_love_burritos
Some people actually care about and respect the cultures of others. If that's the case, why not a Happy Birth Day Jesus mass for congress ? Oh wait. There's no need for one, since they're all white. Or, have a Vesak for the millions of Buddhists in America ? Or, Ridavan for people of the Baha'i faith ? EDIT: Why are you complaining about Muslims celebrating Ramadan? I see nothing wrong here. Please read my post Riku. And if you still don't see what I'm saying -- I'm not.

1_man_army
Why do you guys care? There is a big taboo about Islam in America since 9/11 and the he seems to be trying to address that by celebrating the more positive apects of Islam. If you think for a second there isn't a taboo about Islam then just look back at the election campaign when certain elements in the Republican camp (although not McCain to his credit) tried to paint Obama as a Muslim because they felt it would cost him dearly. God forbid a President tries to heal rifts between people in a nation and tries to bring them together. He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)

Acts of "friendship" aren't done by politicians out of any sense of social justice. It rests on communities to be sincere about these things. Politicians might provide an example for some, but by and large, they court votes and not much more. Kriegsmier
My problem with this is he seems to be trying to mix church and state. Lionheart_0
You see this is why I like Canada. We don't force Western culture down Immigrants throats, thus allowing them to practice their culture and get involved with communities of like minded people within Canada. This means that the Canadian government doesn't have to do these huge things that focus on one group of people. If the states acted a bit more like this, you wouldn't have your president trying to educate people about a different culture, cause you would be less xenophobic. But in the end, I think Obama is doing the right thing. Might as well try to show that you care in a country that seems to dislike a specific culture. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Sure, maybe Islam doesn't belong in the "western world", but if people want to be able to follow that belief, then it's fine. It's when any religion is crammed down our throats that it get's on my nerves, which is essentially what Obama is doing here, from the sounds of it. Dire_Wolf
Obama is just showing respect to Islam and Ramadan. Just because Islam is widespread it's all of sudden a bad thing? 7 major parties kissing islamic inhabitants feets? That's the parties choice. Islam is belief of those who would like to follow it. Noone is forced to follow it, and people who have these beliefs are all just ordinary humanbeings like you and everyone else in West. So if you panic because of Islam: 1) Your ignorant 2) You got prejudices in your mind 3) You follow a other religion and dislike the progress of a other one (Islam in this case) THE FACT There is muslims in USA. So what should Obama do? 1) Ignore Islam - Disrespect muslims believs 2) Acknowledge Islam - Respect muslims and their believes just like you would respect humans with no believes. The problem: If Obama does not greet Thanskgiving, then all people who have that can say "Obama stinks". But so far what he did with Ramadan message was good. If it is, why is it then that you have force-marriage (and a very wide age spectrum), honour-murders, stoning etc. I am not panicking. 1: No, i am a realist. 2: No, i simply believe that it doesn't belong in my country (nor does any religion in my mind). 3: No, i am agnostic. Edit: I should also state before someone attacks me that, of course you have freedom of religion. stonewall337
Besides the fact that muslims were responsible for 3,000 American deaths? Not all Muslims, but some. Also, America was founded as a CHRISTIAN NATION. Did you know that God is mentioned in the Preambles to all 50 State Constitutions?
