The Current Poll and the pking IS rs Myth

Well anyone who's looked at the current poll on the runescape homepage will notice one question is "what do you spend most time on rs doing?"

This question caught my eye, because of the answers (or so far at least). If you speak to a lot of players they will without a shadow of a doubt insist rs is all about pking and that without pking rs is nothing.

But stop and take a look at the poll results.

Training NON-COMBAT skills is currently leading.

Combat skills in a close second

Quests a fair way behind but a decent third.

With many other activities such as talking to friends and playing minigames all ranking in before pkings measly 4% (which only beats I don't know and clan events)

To me I loving this poll as its proved waht I've said all along, pking IS NOT huge part of rs and is in fact a minority group.

Did anyone else find this poll and its outcomes intriguing?

The poll results aren't very surprising. Pking is the most important thing in Runescape for some people, but it doesn't seem to be the most important thing for most people.

Keep in mind that it is possible for somebody to spend most of their time raising combat skills specifically for pking, and end up spending more time raising their combat skills than pking (the poll asked what you spend the most time doing, not what your favorite thing is or what the most important thing is).

I think that people who PK are less likely to vote in a poll, thus being underrepresented. They definitely complain the loudest when something isn't right with PKing, but are more likely to not say anything at all when it does go right.

Its only becuase since pking has been changed alot and i mean most pkers have given it up. I used to pk all the time it was the main reason i played rs then when they got rid of it and put in bounty hunter(i never liked it) i gave up for the most part on pking. Alot of pkers quit or simiply changed playing styles. I changed playing styles I now skill and make money. Also i bet training combat skills only lost out because so many people already have maxed out their combat skills and thus have no need to train them.

There is a huge difference between saying that pking is the most important aspect of the game and how much time is spent actually doing it. For instance, 26king - It really didn't take very much time and you could do non combat skills while gaining ep, however, the effects of 26king were much more far reaching then the time needed in order to actually 26k.

In truth, pking, is one of the most important activities for the runescape economy; it always has and most likely always will be very important to the runescape economy... if you can't see that, then you're blind or you don't want to see it. Now with so much more to do in runescape, it has less of an effect, but it is still very influential over the runescape economy.

I agree pking is a big factor in the economy.

However people have argued that pking IS the main part of rs and rs would die without it. The year or so we had without pking and statistics like these proves this is wrong.

The key effect of pking is holding up prices and demand for alot of supplies and low-ish end equipment, but it by no means is the be all and end all of runescape.

Pking was only a fraction of the votes before the 2007 updates, so not much has changed.

PKing is extremely important to me. But I have spent more time skilling/training combat skills than PKing, thus I voted for spending most of my time skilling in RS :wall:

Yes, that sig was annoying.

As has been said before: PKing has never been the largest aspect of RuneScape as far as time spent. This can be seen fairly easily in pures: hours and hours of training for 99 ranged and 94 magic. People simply do not spend that much time PKing (espescially not anymore! It is impossible to fund an account to PK every hour of play.) The fact that skilling takes the most time does not have any bearing on what is the most important aspect of RuneScape.

Personally I believe that aspect is experience, and the most significant portion of the RuneScape economy is experience.
