Lol excercise buffs prob be like raw at this.

But seriously since starting uni my fitness = WIN

The lack of funds and knowledge I supply my own food means I'm eatting a much better diet and just the sheer fact of walking a lot of places to save money my stamina and fitness are improving well loads!

I've dropped like 10kg in the past 3 1/2 weeks from this alone!

So uni = win for fitness lol

I always heard alot about ppl getting fat at uni.

Eg beer bellies and the like

But I fail to see how that works, as if you go out partying and clubbing you gotta burn off waaayyy more calories dancing than u get from the drink

It's far less clubbing and more sitting around drinking. And it takes at least about an hours dancing to burn off a glass of coke/beer not including the alcohol. I don't know about you, but when I go clubbing/partying, I drink more than 1 an hour :P

So many people slim down heaps because they just don't have time to eat. They get more exercise too, walking to and from classes, busses and housing. I went to highschool with this guy who was 135kg or so when he graduated and was down to 90 after a semester at college! Still had skin flaps though :(

Haha I went to this terrible club the other night and the typical [bleep]ers were on the dance floor with the circle [cabbage] going. And dead set they could not dance to save themselves. I told one of them he was [cabbage] and they dared me to go in...

You guessed it. Me & my mate jump in and go nuts. The shopping cart, lawn mower, sprinkler, fishing rod. Everything :D

Then kung fu fighting came on and my best mate kicked his brother in the face :S

Oh I'd definitely agree with this. The walking to and from lectures, tutorials and the likes, going out shopping etcetera all really adds up! It's great! :P

Funnily enough though, in terms of food it's not all as bad as I thought it'd be! I do a lot of home-cooking and i've managed to afford some pretty decent meals and salads, even on a budget of...~£4 a day? <_<

Albeit, I don't go out drinking a lot, yet. 1 and ½ months to go until I have that privilege! I think alcohol really makes the costs bump up, something I'll have to try and avoid if I'm to continue managing reasonable meals! :)

I'd agree with this. Done more drinking since i came here but i've also done a heap more walking and my diets been slightly better (the odd 4am stop-off in a takeaway after a night on the tiles though  ).

I'm finding it's actually pretty cheap to eat healthily in reasonable quantities. Pasta, tuna, fruit, milk and supermarket own brand stuff is all quite cheap and filling. First week or so I lost quite a lot of weight because I wasn't exercising and was really quite ill, but now that i'm back into sport my diet is back to normal. I cycle to lectures but none of them are more than 5 mins away so that's not much exercise.

I totally agree. Well maybe not in terms of eating a better diet, since I have a dining hall plan.. but my campus is so huge and spread out that I'm going to get the "freshman minus fifteen!" I have to walk 10-15 minutes to get to any of my classes (and even to get to the dining hall on the weekends or after 8pm).

I'm going to college next year and I was wondering about biking.

I love biking but I would think if you were to carry a bike around the campus, it may as well be something fairly cheap so if it's stolen, it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Insight?

I lost weight my freshmen year. The food they served in the dining halls was generally pretty healthy. I also cycled or road my longboard to most my classes. Sophomore year (last year) I probably walked to class more first semester because I would walk with my friend because we shared a class together. I also starting going to the gym three times a week to get more in physical shape. I am already a pretty small guy around 130-140 pounds (I haven't weighed myself in forever). This year now that I live about 2 miles off campus I ride my bike everyday to class. On an average day I have class I will ride to campus and back at least twice in the AZ heat. I need to start going to the gym again though I'm starting to lose my shape(?) I don't know what a guy is suppose to call it and still sound masculine, maybe my muscles? ha.

In my campus, a lot of people ride bikes. So if you don't get a flashy one that stands out and get a lock, you'll be fine

Get a U-Lock and don't just get the cheapest one they have at your local bike store. Spend upwards of $50-$100 for a good U-Lock. I just got my nice road bike stolen last week after two years of owning and using a cable lock and it was only a matter of time before it got stolen. I switched to this Kypotnite U Lock and so far it has been great.

I don't see where the stereotype of "freshman 15" came from. Being on a limited diet and on a big campus made me lose 16 pounds already. Should be called "freshman -15".

I gained a bunch of weight when I went to university. Here's how it works:

I played 2 sports (hockey and tennis) plus I was in competitive marching band and I would run during the summer with my friends. I was able to eat anything I wanted to anytime I wanted to because I burned it off. Each of my practices were around 2 and a half hours for my sports and obviously running a few miles burns calories. Now when I started at the university, I didn't play 2 sports and was not in competitive marching band either. I still was able to eat the same amount of food as I had been before, I just didn't burn it off. I gained probably 15 pounds or so. Since then, though, I've dropped 30 pounds because I took up cycling and I work out almost every day. I weigh less than I did in high school (granted I probably have less muscle mass since I don't lift anymore).

Most people gain weight. I saw a bunch of my friends in my dorm put on weight. A lot of it has to do with being less active like Range_This11 said.

Because at least my dining halls have a lot of junk food, always about 50 dessert options, soda, etc. I don't get any of that at home :P
