GJ09: Best UK Dev goes to...

Rather funny reading through all these comments against Jagex, saying they didn't deserve to win. Well, as one company started up by very few people to grow over the past 9 years I think they most certainly deserved the win. If so many people went out of their way (In reality) to cast their votes for Jagex well then you should stop moaning. They've built up a good fanbase/customer base so that these generous people would vote for them. I've played all the GTA's since they were pretty much released. But I am still playing RuneScape since I started, GTA got boring after several months. Don't you see?

They totally deserve it. You might ask why, but I don't think anyone else could have made such a successful MMO and basically launch the genre. Especially from a relatively small company when compared to Blizzard ect.

Everquest would like to speak to you on that. See, just because they were the first does not mean they launched the genre. There were probably writers who wrote fantasy before Tolkien and writers who wrote sci-fi before Jules Verne, but they didn't found the genre. Those who get popular enough to make a difference, however, do. Runescape wasn't popular enough to be able to found the genre, though it may have been the first.

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

I didn't say found, I said launched.

Of course, they didn't create the genre, but they were the ones to popularise it and make people see it. For example (and this is probably a bad example, so bear with me), Twilight wasn't the first Teenage vampire novel, but it was the one to launch the genre into people's eyes.

Blizzard started small just like everybody else (3 people)... I think launching the genre would be an overstatement as well. RS was not very popular until it was mass advertised on Miniclip and such.

Whether or not Jagex did or did not deserve this I think it is hard to dispute that the poll was incredibly bias and poorly done.

It is like the time poll's for the worlds most influential person of that year. Look at the poll from last year, the guy who started 4chan won. I'm sorry /b/tards but your hero is not the most influential person in the world or the person of the year. However because the poll was on the internet it catered to the /b/tards and got all their votes. Similarly, this poll was catered to Jagex and their audience because of how it can be advertised to potential voters and such. Somebody sitting at home may have played games from all three developers but if they are currently playing a game from Lionhead on their Xbox they aren't even going to know about the poll and as such while they might think Lionhead is the best developer their vote is never going to be counted.

So seriously, stop getting anal and freaking out at everybody who says Jagex may not have deserved this. The poll was poorly done and hardly proves anything except people who play RS went and voted.

And RS does get laughed at on other games sites btw.

Who the hell said they didn't?!?

And I alreay adressed this anyway.

If it's just the gamer community, then it should hardly matter. Each company or game targets different audiences, so I don't really care what the rest of the gamer community thinks about RS. Different games have different players, and players from one game disliking another does not impact the legitimacy of the players of that game's enjoyment.

Let's not depend on GTA, WoW and players of other games to decide whether or not RS ia good game. It's like asking a geologist what their opinion is on star formation.

As does WoW on other games sites too. It really doesn't matter what people who don't play think, the fact is that lots of people that do play, and others who don't but thought Jagex deserved it, voted for Jagex.

WoW is a respectable game. The players get laughed at, sure, but that's because of stereotypes. Heck, WoW players make up half the jokes, probably more. People laugh with, not at, WoW players. Runescapers are laughed at.

Please explain to me why RS or RSers getting laughed at by, say, WoWers should matter at all.

*An addition: Like how in Science, a geologist's opinion on matters of Astrophysics doesn't hold much credibility, a WoWer's opinion on RS shouldn't either.

They totally deserve it. Runescape's best assets gave them this award. The Jagex Business plan of a mass market, cheap and accessible game is what gave them the award. The other companies, in this instance shot themselves in the foot by having smaller user bases. They have more players of their games that could vote, that is because their games have much much more lifespan and attract many many more people.

One word: poll tax. Every other company's voters have them.

Console games have the console and the games. PC games have the games, a pc, and, in many cases, a monthly fee. Handhelds require the game and the handheld.

Runescape requires nothing. Nothing. No game disc required (not even a download, for that matter), no monthly fees unless you choose to, and you don't even need a computer; many who play it play at the library or other places with free computer access.

And then we have advertisement. Runescape has heavy bias here as you are required to go to their website to play where they have conveniently posted an advertisement for this very affair not once, but twice. Most other corporations listed here do not have this requirement.

Let's also not forget that many of these votes are from preteen's and younger, player's who have a very, very small repertoire of games. Though not an issue in itself, this makes older players or those who identify themselves as gamers feel frustrated. Many feel that it is unfair that a corporation should win simply because they direct their young swarm to vote for them.

Finally, as I've pointed out in the past, Jagex itself is not well liked. Runescapers have this stereotype in mind where other gamers point and laugh at the game merely because of it's graphics. Wrong. They laugh at it because of Jagex's abysmal customer service. They mock it because of the free trade updates. They find it horrible because of the never ending grinding. And they abhor it because of the community.

They may have had smaller bases but the problem is the "base" wasn't even told. Are you to blind to realize that somebody playing on their Xbox doesn't get a helpful message every two weeks letting them know their is a contest going on?

The WoW players that get laughed at are the ones who play 20 hours a day on 5 computers at once.

Every RS players gets laughed at because

  • Customer service sucks
  • The graphics are terrible
  • It is impossible to hold a conversation for more than two seconds because the maturity is non-existant
  • Your "skill level" is proportional to how much time you grind and has no basis in reflexes or understanding of the game
  • Absolutely no regard to balance in PVP
  • Everything about combat relies on you getting lucky
  • Jagex never admitting they made a mistake and fixing things
  • Terrible end game content considering the time effort
  • Questing is basically gather said list, kill monster that requires you to switch pray (Hard concept), return to quest giver
  • The economy and trade in general suck now? Before the GE you couldn't even skill because of bots

I am sure I could find some more things if you want.

None of this even related to the post of mine you quoted, buuuut...

Superior availability is one of Jagex's accomplishments over other games/companies.

Yes, the poll was stacked, we're over that now. I didn't even vote, I'm glad they got it, but I do know it probably would have gone the other way.

FInally, this...

Please answer my post, you quoted it, and your post was at first irrelevant and at last a re-statement:

Keep in mind the points I noted... in the post you quoted...

Saying why RS/Jagex is mocked is not an answer, it's a re-statement (especially since many of those reasons have completely reasonabel explanations).

Never crossed my mind, by the way.

Exaggeratted (never ending), and the same in many, many, MANY other MMO's.

@fat klutz

First off most of your reasons have are either explainable (bad graphics (I don't even care about graphics) are because Jagex has enabled RS to be playable on truly ancient machines in order to increase number of possible customers; it's one of their leading philosophies), exaggerated (impossible to hold a conversation, really?), universal (idiots are only on RS?), and/or false/ill-informed (ever even done some of the not-novice quests? Try MEP2, Summer's End, ETC then tell me what a quest basically is in RS).

Anything else is called a CON of playing RS. RS also has PROS over other games, like how other games have PROS of playing it. There's no such thing as a perfect game, and even if it was "perfect" for some person or group, it wouldn't be perfect for many other people.

Here's what it boils down to: You believe Jagex are great game designers and that they deserve this award. I believe that as successful as they are, they do not deserve this award.

That's not gonna change and nothing new is going to brought to the table. Anything I've said you've poo-pooed and followed up with why does it matter? So I've tried to restate it in a way that it makes sense.

And I'm gonna try one last time:

Here's why other gamers opinion matters: cause this is an award given by gamers to game producing corporations based on votes. When those who are not really gamers, i.e. too young or play one or two games, vote enough to swing the contest, they get upset. That's one of the complaints levied against the Wii: it attracts too many nongamers. Most of Runescape's player base aren't gamers. This would be like the American people not liking a law that foreigners voted into place, using the American system, and then being told that their opinion does not matter.

Edit: You're also demanding evidence and arguments without giving any of your own. Instead of telling us that complaints about Runescape are invalidated, why not tell us how?

Can you name for the hard quests. Count them up. And then divide it by the number of quests. Somehow I doubt your number will be much anywhere close to 20%.

I realize their are pros and cons. Bad graphics is a con but like you said it allows more players to play the game and makes it easily accessible wherever you are.

Bad customer support is not a con. It is a problem. There are no pros to Jagex's terrible customer support. Similarly there are no pros (in the context of serious gaming) to a combat system that is horrible balanced and based 80% on luck.

Anything I've said you've poo-pooed and followed up with why does it matter? So I've tried to restate it in a way that it makes sense.

Yes, you restated it... but still didn't answer anything. It doesn't even seem like you're even reading anything I've said.

Again, I have NEVER said I thought Jagex deserved this reward.

What I am saying is basically: Players from game A complaining about/mocking/laughing at Game B, the players of game B, and/or the developers of game B does not mean game B is a bad game, it means game B does not appeal to the players of game A.

I was under the impression that you thought the gaming community not liking RS made RS a bad game, because you've already mentioned this, several times, in multiple threads, as if the players of game A decide how good game B is.

Presuming "gamers" are people who play a lot of different games, then who many players of WoW are "gamers"? Or Fable? And how do you know how many of RS's population are "gamers"? It may attract "non-gamers", but does not prevent them from joining other games.

Edit: You're also demanding evidence and arguments without giving any of your own. Instead of telling us that complaints about Runescape are invalidated, why not tell us how?

Get with the program, I only wanted evidence when I thought you meant other game developers.

I was sitting at a tree woodcutting and somebody walks up and calls me a [bleep]. Go into a random bank and try to ask somebody an intelligent question. I am betting 80% of the time you get a stupid response back.

Still an exaggeration... hardly "impossible" to hold a decent conversation with a random person, I do it all the time.

Can you name for the hard quests. Count them up. And then divide it by the number of quests. Somehow I doubt your number will be much anywhere close to 20%.

Still, you made a gross oversimplification.

RS's quests are better than WoW's daily "quests". And it's easy to make something look bad just by says "basically, X is..."

"Basically, gaming is responding to stimuli generated by a computer based on the computer's programming and previous stimuli you inputed into the game, in order to incite a pleasurable expirience."

Bad customer support is not a con. It is a problem.

Cons ARE problems.

There are no pros to Jagex's terrible customer support. Similarly there are no pros (in the context of serious gaming) to a combat system that is horrible [sic] balanced and based 80% on luck.

I never said there were Pro's to Jagex's bad CS, I didn't categorize most of what you siad. I'd say their CS is "explainable".

Can you start trying to understand the concept of my posts and stop taking everything so literally?

Somebody asked why RS gets laughed at and I listed the reasons. Now tell me why WoW players get laughed at. Tell me why CSS players or CoD4 players get laughed at. Tell me why SC/WC3 players get laughed at.

What I am saying is basically: Players from game A complaining about/mocking/laughing at Game B, the players of game B, and/or the developers of game B does not mean game B is a bad game, it means game B does not appeal to the players of game A.

This is why you are wrong. Good games do not get made fun of in mass. It is impossible for there not to be someone out there who makes fun of SC but the gaming community on the whole (whether they play MMO, RTS, FPS, w.e) respect SC. You might suck at shooting games but are you honestly going to say that CS is a bad game? Uh... probably not. Somebody who doesn't like MMO's isn't going to sit here and bash Diablo and make fun of it simply because it doesn't appeal to them. So unless there is some massive conspiracy RS must actually suck in the eyes of other gamers.

@fat klutz

I was sitting at a tree woodcutting and somebody walks up and calls me a [bleep]. Go into a random bank and try to ask somebody an intelligent question. I am betting 80% of the time you get a stupid response back.

Ignoring the 'amg Runescape sucks that why I'm on a Runescape [email protected]' aspect, if the people that made those Xbox games erm... I don't know... interacted with their players, maybe tried this new age thing called 'communication', I've been hearing so much about, then maybe they would get the votes. They didn't even bother, so their loss.

You do know what an Xbox is right? You put a disk in a play the game. There is no way for the game makers to communicate with you once the game is purchased and in your Xbox. Please PM and let me know you are trolling.

I don't troll.

I understand there are less obvious chances for communication, but there are things like Xbox live. Practically every console is connected to the internet these days, why don't those companies try to use it. I assume every game has some sort of official website, why don't they set up forums, talk with users, advertise said forums. Why not set them up before the game is released? Talk about how the game development is going, what the publishers are doing to make the wait so long... of course not as many people would know such things existed, so why not advertise it? Put a little slip of paper in every game box advertising the game website. I understand it's more limited, but it's not like these people can't use the internet just because the game isn't on there.

Good games are made fun of in mass. World of Warcraft is a tremendous example. The fact is, Runescape has attracted more people into playing than any other free MMO and has somehow managed to keep enough of those players playing for enough years with enough passion to establish fantastic communities like tip.it. Why? I don't know. It might possibly be because it's a good game. Live with it.

No, good games don't get made fun of. I already addressed the WoW issue. People make fun of it because south park did an episode with stereotypical video games nerds. Nobody is laughing at the graphics of WoW or the customer support or the massive grinding so you can wear a cape.

I think you're missing the point here. Runescape is the most creatively made game out of all of those, it has broken boundaries of game programming that none of the others have come close to achieving, which is why the developers (and not the game itself) won the award. We all know graphics shouldn't be important for the enjoyability of a game, and yes, people do laugh at WoW because you have to grind so much.
