Technically invalid phrases

Ever looked at somebody's chat message and thought 'that just doesn't make sense..'?

I'm going to make a list of some words/phrases I've seen and explain how it doesn't work; if you find one you'd like to add, put it in a message at the bottom, and I'll add it to the OP when I get the chance.

 

Noob

Either this is a fall-back insult, meaning you have nothing else to use - or you are insulting somebody due to the levels in skills they have achieved, which means that you are effectively saying you are superior due to the amount of time you have input to the game.

 

Go home

One I've seen a lot in my clan chat and wandering around the game world; how can one go home when they are speaking over a computer, most probably from the comfort of their bedroom/study or anywhere inside their home?

 

Poor for my level

Implies that at each combat level, everybody should have a set average amount of money, I know plenty of people who train combat stats and not income skills - I can see an element of truth in this, however, as while you advance in the game, you are sure to get some rare drops every now and then. I still see this as a simply invalid phrase to use, especially when making excuses as to why one could not afford an item.

Although I agree about 'noob', the term 'go home' means 'go off the internet'. Nobody actually has the internet as their 'home', and it's a common occurance to refer to websites and games as places away from home, because our language has had to cope with such a new concept relatively quickly.

 

'Poor for my level' is like talking about the average person. You are never going to meet an actual average person, there is no such thing, but you can come up with what the average person's income is at a certain age by taking a group of representative people at that age, add together their incomes and divide by the number of people. In this way, you can say in game whether you are 'poor' or 'rich' for your level, by comparing yourself with other players at a similar level.

 

Sorry for being pedantic, but those last two statements are legitimate, if a bit weird if taken literally.

The go home phrase means: leave and go somewhere where you are wanted/needed because either no one likes you 'here' or you are just a bad person (i.e troll).

And I also think that the first statement is legitimate as well... For a start you are saying that calling some-one a noob means your insulting their levels: this is rarely the case as you can be a noob at minigames, pking, gwd etc. Secondly what is invalid about saying you are superior than them in the game if your the one with the better skills. Seems to make perfect sense to me.

Nobody takes internet insults literally. if you do, there's something wrong with you. but everyone gets the message behind them. I can't think of many off the top of my head. But when I'm pking and someone accuses me of being cheap (and I can assure you I never try to be unfair when pking) and says "l2pk", I usually just respond by saying I am new to pking and i'm indeed learning2pk by attacking noobs like you [you being the person who said l2pk]. It usually shuts them up. But seriously though, I consider all of pking to be a learning experience to me because I actually need to learn to pk properly, so them telling me "l2pk" isn't an insult at all.

I'm sure plenty of people have said this in the past, but even so; each one of us was at a point where we had that set of levels, albeit not exactly the same. The point is the steadily growing experience value going hand in hand with play time - I have played over 200 days on runescape, yet my skills aren't too brilliant; because I prefer to spend my time socializing. Different people prefer to do different things on the game - in my opinion that's what makes runescape so great; you can do what you want, when you want. To be insulted because you prefer doing something different to the majority just doesn't seem right.

Poor for your level is usually for high levels like 110+ imo, where you start to not raise a level every day.

 

Go home has been explained and I use the word noob to mean idiot.

People also say that I am poor for my level. I quit RS for a long time and when I came back I had to start from scratch. Since coming back I have gained 99's in Fishing, Cooking, Fletching, Woodcutting, Firemaking, Defence, Hitpoints and Summoning (in that order and I was already 99 in Attack and Strength). What money I have been able to aquire since coming back from monster drops and skilling have been eaten up by other skills, most notably Summoning. I think I have about 20m in coins right now which to me is fine. I'm not bothered by having vast amounts of wealth, I'd rather spend my money on making my skills better.

What I find incredible is that you presumably haven't bothered to verify your statements above. Whilst massive can indeed mean having mass, it can also mean large in scale or amount, so a "massive amount of light" is perfectly reasonable use of the word massive.

 

Equally, incredible can be used both positively and negatively, however the latter usage is less frequent and is usually qualified as negative through intonation which is difficult to convey in text chat.

 

What you've done in your post is take a single definition and imply that any other usage is incorrect, it's akin to me saying "I can't believe someone shouted duck when they saw that object flying towards my head... Surely they must realise that a duck is a bird that goes quack".
