Hegel
Jagex Games Studio today confirmed that a UK resident has been arrested following collaboration with the Police Central e-Crime Unit (PCeU). The arrest is part of Jagexs ongoing effort to combat the theft of accounts in RuneScape.com, the worlds most popular free-to-play Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game. RuneScape players accounts were stolen through phishing websites, which duped unsuspecting players into providing their game logon credentials. Account theft and the use of phishing websites is a problem facing the entire online games industry and Jagex maintains a specialist team to combat any law breaking within our games said Mark Gerhard, Jagex CEO. Where there is any evidence to suggest someone has committed a crime, as is clearly the case with any phishing or hijacking, we work closely with law enforcement agencies around the world to bring these people to account. Our first and only concern is protecting our player community as we know the high value players place on their unique accounts continued Gerhard. Players invest years of time and effort into developing their RuneScape character so the theft of aElectronic Theatre Image RuneScape account shouldnt be treated differently to the theft of any other valuable possessions such as a games console, television or car. Our internal investigations revealed that just a handful of individuals are responsible for over 95% of all account hijacking in RuneScape and we have a zero tolerance approach to anyone who attempts to undermine the integrity of our vibrant community. I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to the professional and hard-working individuals at the PCeU and the FBI, who are assisting us with similar actions in the USA. A 23 year old man was arrested in Avon & Somerset on the morning of Tues 24th Nov by officers from the Police Central e-crime Unit, following an allegation that a number of RuneScape gaming accounts had been hacked and misappropriated said a PCeU Spokesperson. Following the discovery of the compromise, PCeU detectives worked closely with Jagex and through this cooperation the necessary evidence was secured to ensure that an early arrest could be made. People who seek to destroy others online gaming experience could be committing criminal offences, leaving themselves liable to prosecution continued the PCeU Spokesperson. The PCeU will continue to work with the industry and investigate these allegations where appropriate. Distribution of illegally copied videogame materials, such as modification units and chips and even the games themselves, have long been a bane of the industry. As we move forward with new technology its important to maintain the efforts to curb criminal activities, either with physical media or virtual property. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest from Jagex.http://electronictheatre.co.uk/index.php/industry-news/3575 Just thought that this is important enough to bring up for discussion. It is heartening to see that Jagex is taking a firmer and more active approach towards safeguarding player welfare.

blakdragon39
Wow that sounds like a good thing to me! These people really are stealing.. people put money and time into their accounts, and if it's stolen, all that money and time is gone. Alright, Jagex! Lets_3ekout
Hah, was about to post the same thing. I think this is a really good thing for Jagex to do, they might not be able to enforce this on all offenders but people will certainly get second thoughts after reading that when thinking about whether or not to set up a phising site. Well done. =D> Check out my blog to read the Adventures of a Big Damn (F2P) Hero. THE place for all free players to connect, hang out and talk about how awesome it is to be F2P. Kimberly
The saying "Good luck, I'm behind 7 proxies!" exists for a reason. Good luck convicting him, should his crimes be serious to go to a trial. Though, I'm not very familiar with the court system in the UK so meh. Jagex has surprisingly enough been at the forefront of minimizing the damage done by cyber-crimes. I'm sort of glad they used their expertise in these kinds of things outside the realm of credit card fraud and onto something else.

me
Go Jagex! CasualGaming reveals that:By chance CasualGaming visited Jagex on the day of the arrest, and was shown the large team handling security and safety at the Cambridge developer by Gerhard, who revealed £3 million in salaries is spent providing 24-hour support to prevent fraudsters and those with unsavory intentions While Spong is wondering which law it is they will try and charge him with (although seem to have confused a general statement about sometimes doing bad stuff on the Internet is how illegal with an insight into the specific arrest). I think it may have been released under the heading "JAGEX AID UK POLICE TO DEMONSTRATE ZERO TOLERANCE STANCE ON CYBER CRIME" with the sub-heading "Account phisher arrested by UK police's e-Crime Unit following tip-off from Jagex." I'm sort of glad they used their expertise in these kinds of things outside the realm of credit card fraud and onto something else. They've also taken action against those running private servers in the past, but that was probably mostly done by out-of-house lawyers. Racheya
I think this is great. It might not help to stop the people that really don't want to get caught - but it'll put the sort of people who're just thinking 'Oh it's just Runescape' or 'I'm online, they're not gonna be able to get me' right off the idea if they hear about this. warren211
I'm very glad this happened, its about time that people realized that cyber crime is just as bad as many real world crimes. It only took a dozen child suicides to get there, but we're learning the importance. It's great that this hacker who thought he was untouchable by the legal system from his computer is finally facing punishment for his crimes. Keep up the good work, jagex! [hide=]tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :( :lol:But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities. That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.[/hide]Apparently a lot of people say it. lionesshunt
I think this is a great thing. Many people do and say things over the internet that they normally wouldn't. This shows these people that there are consequences to their actions. I doubt many people are going to read this article and change their ways, but still, it's nice to see action being taken. Arguing with a fool proves there are two. ValaraZ
I have to agree with the above. I suppose those proxies don't help much when internet police comes knocking on the door. :) Nothing left to say but: PWNED That guy must be sitting in his cell thinking: How did I end up here? Was all that 1337ing in RS worth it in the end? A friend of mine said that the law in the UK works so that if you make money from all that hacking it is concidered as ill-gained funds and have to repaid to someone. If anyone remembers R2Pleasent or whatever his name was, he claims to make tens of thousands from RS (according to his sig on another forum) so he might have to pay that back if Jagex was to pursue more people. In the end, it is good to know that they care about our accounts, if mine was stolen I would be heartbroken. Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant: "If I live, I will kill you, If I Die, you are forgiven." Such is the Rule of Honor.
