Jagex portraying Runescape as ONLY a free game?

I have seen this advertisement many times, but i haven't noticed the lies Jagex put them until now. I do not care so much about it either, but i think it's wrong of them to portray Runescape as a "FREE GAME", when it clearly is not. And also portraying that because it's free game, it is very popular (Everyone knows it's P2P that makes it fun).

FREE TO PLAY:

Yes, it is free to play. But it's P2P that gives access to majority of skills, quests and areas in Runescape.

WORLD'S MOST POPULAR MMO:

Is it 100% free MMO? No.

Is F2P fun once you get most things done? No.

Other points in the advertisement are good, but the two mentioned above are not from my view. I think it's lame of Jagex to portray Runescape as a free game, and also portray F2P as being the fun part of Runescape (P2P is fun part).

What is your opinion on this?

I think they should mention P2P in that advertisement.

You are quite biased in saying that F2P is not fun and only P2P is. I find F2P to be a very engaging and unique way to play the game. I actually choose to be F2P (although I have been thinking about P2P more and more).

Jagex has said time and time again, that F2P is the game and members is like the 'expansion pack'. So while your argument saying that most of the things are P2P may be correct, the core of the game remains F2P and you pay for the extras.

Jagex can, and are portraying their game as free to play. As it is, mentioning payment will turn people away instantly. They're allowed to say it's F2P, as the actual game is. And as ilovecuttingyews said your arguement's very biased. I know plenty of F2p'ers who prefer F2p over P2p. They find it a hell of a lot more fun.

I know F2P can be fun to some people, but you gotta admit P2P is alot more fun. F2P is ONLY fun when you take it as a challenge (example 100% F2P), otherwise it's very boring. I have been F2P for at least 2 years.

But i take it as a lie saying that Runescape is a FREE game, when like you called it the 'expansion pack' is P2P (and by the way i read where Jagex person said that F2P is not supposed to be a demo).

I admit that i didn't think it well through when i said P2P is more fun than F2P. But i dare to say that majority would say that P2P is more fun than F2P.

Depends on who you're asking. High level F2pers will say that F2p is better, I personally would agree with them in the sense that F2p for them is about the tightly-knit community they have. Everyone knows everyone.. P2pers, well, they'll say P2p is the best simply because they're P2p and that's what they do. (Note, I'm P2p.)

And to reply to what you've said to ilovecuttingyews, P2p is indeed the expansion pack, F2p is the game. You've got everything you need to play RuneScape (the "F2p version"), there's nothing left out. Everything you need is at your fingertips. There's no content left out purposely so you can't complete a task, there's hiscores which are mixed with P2p, there's basicly everything you'd expect in a game. Except this's being provided free of charge and all they ask is that you leave the advert at the top of your window free. That, my friend, is a game. That, is RuneScape. One can't argue that at all. RuneScape is FREE. But if you wish, you can pay a monthly charge to get some extra benefits! But if you don't want to, you can still play a full game in itself.

I am high level, and i have been in F2P big while, and can tell you it's not so fun. As for expansion pack, i know...you don't have to repeat that, i have actually read that part. But that expansion pack is much bigger than F2P, so don't see how Runescape is completely free.

Sure the F2P is, and it is good. But is F2P fun after you achieve all? No. Do you get updates for F2P every week? No (It's stated you get updates, not spesifically).

Anyone saying F2P is fun has either:

not finished everything by F2P

or trying to gain respect from community by achieving big goals in F2P like getting all 99s in F2P.

And they gain fun from the goals they set, but the leveling of the skills is not fun. So it makes F2P leveling or activities>not fun (If you don't base it on a goal).

I wouldn't have started RS if I didn't know it was free. Most new players will be happy with F2P for at least a few months, if not longer. So I don't have a problem with it.

I have friends who have maxed in F2p, they're playing for their own enjoyment - not to gain respect from others.

I'm sure you do, but i bet that there are alot less players who find F2P fun than P2P.

If i were to bet, id say 70% of Runecape prefer P2P.

But without real statistics we can't for sure say this or that, but i have seen P2P appeal more than F2P. Just Forum TIF has many of them being P2P.

TBH, I don't know why one would prerfer F2P, unless one prefers the challenge, or one enjoys not feeling like they "have" to play.

You have a pretty subjective arguement going to be honest. I was F2P for a year and a half before I went P2P. Before then I didn't know what I was missing, so I was content. After I lost P2P I had to get it back, but a F2per who never had P2P wouldn't know what they were missing, so they'd be perfectly content.

The popularity of the members' game is a direct result of the popularity of the free game. Why shouldn't Jagex advertise that Runescape is completely free? It is. There's no obligation to pay for it--you won't access the premium content, but it's not like World of Warcraft and such where you have a 10-day free demo and that's it; you can play the free game as long as you want and level up as much as you like within it, with full access to all the features available in f2p. When p2p was first introduced way back when, it was introduced from the beginning as an expansion to the original game.

And being the most popular free game in the world is absolutely something they can and should be proud of.

You could argue that it's misleading to advertise that it's both completely free and has over 150 quests plus regular content updates, though, since you only get those once you upgrade.

99% of the people who state that they prefer f2p over p2p are either:

1)Too poor to pay for membership (Which must be rare, considering it only costs 5$month)

2)Arrogant people of the same type than those people who played Classic, thinking they have a higher status because they are "100% F2P"

3)Unable to find a mean to pay for membership.

Seriously, if they never tried membership, how can they prefer F2P?

This is not a discussion on what is fun and what is not fun.

The statement they have made is correct.

Just because I don't think Halo Combat Evolved demo is fun for more than 5 seconds doesn't change the fact it is free content. Same with Runescape.

Free to play is free content. Its a free game completely separate from the members game. You dont need the members game to play. If you want it, that's one thing. But it is certainly not required.

Also nowhere on there does it say "everything is free", but it does say over 15,000 hours of free game play. So your argument is not valid as nowhere on that page does it say access to all the content is free. It just says the free version of the game, is free. Nothing more, nothing less.

Well it is Free to Play. I haven't paid a cent to Jagex and I've played the game. Plus it's all advertising, you wouldn't play a game if you had to pay $5 (or however much it is nowadays) just to see it

F2P used to be the game, years ago. These days, members is the game. I remember when I first got members right after RS2 was launched. There was a fair amount to do, but it just felt like a large expansion - comparable in size/content to F2P. I think back then there was maybe 4 members only skills? Today there are 9, with a few more having member only benefits. There many more quests, and the world map is ridiculously large. In comparison - F2P and P2P aren't even close anymore. Sorry F2P, but that's the cold hard truth you'll have to live with. :P

Just want to point out that you're basing this on what you think is fun. Jagex is advertising what is fact rather than what is more fun.

Besides, I can think of at least ten reasons why someone would be F2P and not P2P

1. Enjoys the challenge of how much harder F2P is.

2. Simplicity of F2P.

3. Focused on school.

4. Strict parents.

5. Financial restrictions. (rare)

6. No time.

7. F2P friends.

8. F2P Clans.

9. Difficulty in certain parts of the world making membership payments (such as distance from post office).

10. No longer active.

I consider myself mainly F2P because of reasons 2, 3, 4, and 10.

Well that's pretty presumptuous. I'll address your points in sequence:

1) For some people [read: most college students], $5 is more important; you've got to consider bills, room and board, gas money, food, and all other manners of things before you think about something like a video game.

2) The F2P players that I've met that prefer F2P to P2P aren't arrogant...they're pretty social and are more than happy to have a chat with you.

3) goto 1;

I agree that there isn't any experience like first-hand experience, but for some, making an investment of $5/mo might not be the best option, or they prefer the tight-knit community that some F2P enjoy.

[btw, 87% of all statistics are made up 41% of the time. Just sayin'.]

Wrong, wrong wrong. You're just making yourself look like an idiot.

I have two accounts one P2P one F2P and I switch between them every so often. I get bored of the complexities of members and like how simple the f2p game is in comparison.

Jagex are clever in advertising Runescape as f2p. If you were told there's this awesome game and it's free! Or there's this awesome game but you have to pay $5 a month for it, which are you likely to chose? And once those people play f2p and like the game enough they will buy members if they can to further their experiences.
