Apparently, our days got shorter now :O :P!

Here's 3 videos about it. You don't have to watch them all, I just added different approaches.

One focusing on Earth's axis-

And lastly, a more scientific one-

Sure, there isn't a real "impact" on our time, but it's interesting nevertheless :o... Kind of scary too :S...

Guys, the title is a joke... As in, I didn't really think it would matter to any of you that your days got shorter by 1.26 millionth of a second, but rather found the phenomenon interesting and wanted to share...

Why bother posting then?

What am I going to do? I can't live without those 1.26 microseconds or whatever it was!

Earth-shattering news people.

Great pun.

Pretty interesting, I heard about this the other day. Sadly now my perfectly timed clock is off by 1.26ms :(

This isn't testable, they are pretty much positive that was the effect the earthquake had on the world. However, many, many other things also affect the rotation on a daily basis on both the positive and negative side which means while the earthquake caused us to lose a millionth of a second there are other things that added a 1/4 millionth of a second or so, and in the end they couldn't even find the earthquake in the measurements.

a fraction of a second seems really insignificant, but thinking that an earthquake shifted the axis at all is amazing. Who knows? Maybe this will correct global warming. I always knew Earth could fix itself. :D

Did you read my post above? The earth shifts it's axis like this EVERY SINGLE DAY. It always has, and always will. So no, it won't fix global warming, the only way to do that is not pollute as much.

From what I understood, it's not that easy to change the axis by 8 CM. I could be wrong though, as I don't really know much (if at all) about the subject.

i think it's ridiculous. how can you even measure such a miniscule amount as 3 inches when the scale of the earth to the cosmos is [bleep]in huge? it's probably hosh posh, and whatever will i do without 1.3 milliseconds?!

It's not that easy, but that earthquake had a lot of force. There are so many other things that have that amount of force also though, so they couldn't even find the 3 inches in the data.

Oh right guys, skully sc obviously knows what interesting means for everyone else besides him! Since he's such an established member he can set objective standards on everyone, not only in video games, but in other subjects as well now!

Anyways. Granted it's very minuscule, but won't some experiments and equations that require precision need some tweaking now?

It is impossible to 'fix' global warming. Even if every single person on the face of the earth stopped living any sort of modernized polluting life, it would still happen. Global warming happens naturally, and will happen. Humans have just sped up the process.

I heard about it yesterday. Even if it is just a little bit of a second it still is kinda cool.

Yeah, I was wondering on the same lines. If those atomic clocks can measure to an accuracy of a second over the course of a billion years, and change of 1.3 microseconds in a day, every day, suddenly becomes significant. It might mean that we would have to put more 'leap seconds' in the UTC clock.
