My old stereo died last year, but I'd had it for over 9 years. I was going to get a new one for my birthday, but I don't think I will. My flatmate has a pretty decent stereo, and all my cd's are in Mp3 format as well, so I just play 'em through my crappy laptop speakers. I don't really have in room in my room for a set of better speakers.

Anyone know a good speaker system for my bedroom that could play stuff from my computer? I just have a couple of $30 Office Depot speakers that do the job, but I'd like some great sounding audio.

Pretty much any stereo with RCA input can be used with a computer. All you need is an RCA -> 3.5mm lead and you're set. As for something good, I don't know. I have a Sony mini stereo and I wouldn't really recommend that, even if it's fine for me.

I've had my harman/kardon speakers for a good 8 years, and they're still working perfectly well. Harman/Kardon is a good hi-fi brand.

Very good brand.

We've got a dedicated music/movie room in our house. With an Origen AE HTPC, Denon AVR-2310 receiver, DALI Concept 2 speakers, DALI IKON Vokal 1 center speaker, DALI Basis 100 subwoofer, and a 32" TV (the wall is too small anything bigger).

And this little wireless mouse+keyboard bluetooth device to control the HTPC:

Is it possible to get a 7.1 speaker set + receiver for $500 that sounds decent?

Just out of curiosity, why a 7.1 setup? If it's just for home entertainment, then 5.1 is quite enough. A 7.1 setup would mean adding more channels to your receiver, which gives said receiver more work to do. And since your budget is fairly limited to spend on a receiver, this is not a good thing (clipping likely to occur when watching movies, etc.). Most films don't even support 7.1, so the two remaining speakers will usually fake something for the back-surrounds.

But to answer your question, yes you could get a quite decent setup for that price (this is highly subjective of course). In my opinion though, you should get a 5.1 setup. A 7.1 setup simply doesn't make sense in a home environment.

Definitely listen to what you're buying first if you can. It's really a subjective thing because everyone has different hearing. I've tried some high-end headphones that have sounded dull to me, amped or not (Senn HD650 and AKG K701, namely) but I had a pair of £20 Philips headphones that sounded really tight and full. They could've just been a good set, but I would really advise listening first.

I think I'm going to get some Audio-Technica ATH-AD700s when I have the money to spare. I tried them out and they really do live up to the hype. Seriously good for £110.

It was just for anything that has a 7.1 audio track, but I just checked all my blu-rays and only one had a 7.1 audio track (Dark City).

I'm bumping this because I am curious about other people's thoughts on 5.1 vs 7.1.

Also, is it a good idea to just buy a Home Theater in a Box or should I buy the receiver and speakers separately? I am specifically looking at this HTIB: ONKYO HT-S6200.

EDIT: Actually after researching that particular HTiB I don't think I want it. I'd like all my devices to connect to the receiver, then one HDMI cable to the TV. The receiver in the 6200 won't transfer video that way for composite and component sources.

Also I just looked at how my room is set up and I am not even sure that rear speakers are an option, just no good place to put them. If 5.1 isn't even an option then there is really no reason for me to upgrade from my 1980's floor speakers  .

I'd like a seperate system, but the limits of space in my room at the moment, and the house that I am moving to, means that I have to make do with what I have. My 'System' (if it can even be called that) Is basically a Bose Companion 3 series II system connected to my M15x (using equalizers to get to my personal preference), along with some Sennheiser CX550 Canalphones for music on the go. If I get a chance, I'll probably invest in some quality gear.

Can you guys help me ou there?

I'm looking for basically a stereo or something (I don't really know any terms here) that I could use CDs or plug my iPod into to play music in my room. I want to be able to at least have 4 speakers used, possibly more. Really, can anyone just give me a good setup for a music system in my room? My budget is currently about $200 but will change if I get a job this summer.

$200 won't get you far, to be honest.

I got my speakers for 1$ at a yard sale.

Seriously though, I don't have the money to get myself a decent audio system. Other priorities.

To be fair, everything there was priced 1$. They're regular computer speakers, with a high and low pass filter.
