The materials of choice play no role in the matter, leaving people to explore facets of the game which haven’t been touched upon in ages. Players can achieve their rocky goals through any number of creative means.

This is untrue. By "materials of choice" I understand the way in wich you choose to train the skill, and for many skills the rocks can only be gotten by training in a specific way (i.e. for Thieving you can get rocks by pickpocketing, but not from stealing from stalls, chests, or Pyramid Plunder). Therefore the materials of choice do play a role, and players can achieve their rocky goals in an often limited number of creative means.
