Runescape 'Instant-Demo'

Found this while browsing the RSOF.

Someone claimed to have seen an Instant Demo mode on the log in screen next to the Free and Member log in menus.

Everyone claimed it to be a hoax until two J-mod posts were made...

Mod Emilee:

"Demo mode does exactly what it say on the tin, it allows a user to come in and play to get a feel of the game."

Mod Nexus:

"If you're referring to the numbers of players online at any one time, bear in mind some players are now in the lobby so that may explain the differences.

The demo mode does exist (no I've not been hijacked by Mod Emilee) it just wont appear for the majority of users, no matter your cookies/and free or members account(s) you have."

Doesn't RuneScape already have a demo version? It's called f2p. I mean, it's basically a demo version. It's not updated and has limited content, just like a demo.

And in a demo you can only do a certain amount of things before you can't go any further.

How many times must it be repeated to make people understand, F2p isn't a demo!!

This would be like...Gnome copters. Except you can actually do things yourself (Very limited amount, I'm sure. I've not actually seen it nor heard of it before now.)

It is updated and fully supported by the company so it isn`t a demo in any way!

True that, F2P is anywhere from being a demo, many f2p players have been training in it for so long but they still haven't able to achieve all different kind of combination F2P world offers.

On another note, even if a game is demo, some people would get enjoyment out of it. I used to remember how I would play certain demo again and again simply because they load faster and pretty much that's all some player wanted.

I remember play NFS Hot Pursuit 2 demo for 4 years, sometimes even spend 2 hours doing the same demo track over and over again to get the best time before I actually purchased the game. The game itself was actually few NFS series combine together, lol. The sad thing is, even thought I have the game, I still have the demo installed and not the actual game, and still play the demo instead...hahahaha.

a happy Runescaper

Gnome Coptors.. good example.

The world is still up by the way.

..but you can only login from a jagex office.

yea i know :P

Because you knowing is the most important thing.

The truman show never happened.

OT

Another try to make the game more available fron new players. It can only be a good thing. Besides, the need to do alot to keep getting new ones in, cause' let's face it. The quality would be unimpressinve by todays standards, if you started today instead of a year or more ago. Runescape lacks the flashiness and instant gratification through eye candy that other mmo's have, like any other asian third rate MMO with boobs on their advertisements.

You have your definitions mixed up. A Free Trial is a demo with a limited amount of time/uses. F2P receives no updates (3-5 new minutes of content from Blood Pact doesn't count) and is only a fraction of the full game. I'm fairly certain that is a demo. The ONLY reason that Jagex says it is not a demo is so they can receive free publicity from the record books for "World's Largest/Best Free MMO/Online Game." F2P is a demo.

ON TOPIC:

I believe this is a good idea. Now there is an instant-demo for those who wish to test F2P before wasting a user name on an account. Sounds good to me.

Player since 2004. All skills 1M+ XP.

Fun stuff... I've left my thoughts on  page 7 of the RSOF thread, about half-way down... Put simply, Jagex needs more forethought when creating new stuff like this, as well as the hindsight to clean up older stuff and/or improve upon it. <_<

Hmm OK, according to the thing the account itself for the demo is stored on your computer. I sure hope they thought to put in safeguards against people modifying their demo account and registering it... like not just putting some kind of checksum in the file itself, any reverse-engineer with half a brain knows how to modify a checksum.

It looks like it would be annoying if you completed the Demo only to learn that the account could not be transferred, and you would have to start over on those nine quests and first few levels again. Or can the account be transferred to F2P and given a name?

For those who cannot see Rhhh4's pic, Demo has 9 quests, a smaller world, no D&D/Minigames, 34 bank spaces, and no chat.

It can be transferred to f2p. Which is why I'm concerned - the demo account is stored on your computer. It is at least possible that one could reverse-engineer the file with the intention of modifying it without corrupting it, and being conservative enough with the modifications so as not to raise any red flags. Once the process for modifying the file is found, it would be relatively simple to create a trainer program for it and release it to the public.

No, it isn't. The username/password is stored in your cookies, but the account itself is hosted by Jagex.

That would make sense, actually.

But just in the interest of testing it, I deleted all of my cookies and deleted the Jagex cache and the client still found the account. Is there another kind of cookie I don't know about? I'll admit I'm not entirely knowledgeable on the subject.
