What has OT Taught you

-3 year olds can be on the terrorist watch list

Well, yesterday when I went to court there was this 10 year old with a citation...so you're not very off. :ugeek:

Since I've been reading OT since I was 13 (17½ now), pratically throughout my high school era, I learned a lot about life. Without OT I would sure of been those annoying "self-proclaimed smart kids", still hating jocks and popular kids, and very anti-social.

People always laugh at OT being serious, but, as a empty-minded kid it really taught me about the general social work of the world.

"The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."

-Child writing on the side walk with chalk = bad

If you're talking about the San Francisco law that they're trying to pass that's just part of the ridiculous media mentioned by Tortillachp. Lots of people completely block sidewalks for hours on end, this is aimed more at them. Unless your child is a drunken hobo writing on the sidewalk, that is.

The whole thing came up because apparently SF's mayor moved to Haight-Ashbury and couldn't get his daughter's stroller around them... Or something like that.

Even then I'm sure the rest of the US would throw a fit of you compared them to SF.

have you ever actually been to America? I don't wanna start a big thing but probably half of what you said there is true. The one thing that really ticked me off was why do we have to be like you? If we don't want to be socialist that is our choice, for good or for ill.

I've lived therem on two seperate occasions, both times for longer than a year. once on the west coast, once on the east coast. I never said you had to be like us, i said we were different.

I've also travelled / sightseed extensively in 15+ states :D

OT is basically a public high school in a (pretty) rich suburb in Massachusetts, so I can't really tell what I've taken from here and what I've taken from there.

Also, white people.

VG&C probably got me hooked on a few games too.

OT has changed my life, in a way.

I've learned a lot from this place, getting the views of life from other people.

I would not be nearly as social without OT.

I've learned a lot about different perspectives and how to quickly develop a point in writing. It's also interesting to watch other posters develop over the years and seeing how cyclical the forum can be over time.

That some users and forum mods are too sensitive.

+1

People take things too seriously on here sometimes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apart from the list that I posted previously, OT has taught me to try to sound as intelligent as possible in every single post that I make. However, I, among others, have eventually realized that 1) This is the Internet; no one cares how you type, and 2) It is pointless to argue over the Internet, so just relax and have fun when you engage in conversations over various topics.

It's interesting how people have developed over the years, especially concerning religion and politics. When I first joined, I was a devout Christian, but I eventually became agnostic. I was also very conservative with conservative parents. However, I started to lean toward the Left spectrum of politics, even so far as to advocate socialism; my parents were still conservative. Now, I am leaning toward the Right side of the political spectrum (if you were to classify me, but I hate both political parties and align myself with none), but my father is leaning toward the Left side of the spectrum and advocates socialism (without being a communist). It's quite interesting.

I have also noticed that some members have changed their views; I know of one in particular that used to be atheistic, but he now considers himself to be an agnostic. Another member used to be Left-leaning, but now he's a full-blown conservative.

I've learnt quite a few things:

1. I suck at writing big lengthy posts and I'm no good in debates where people are writing walls of text.

2. There are actually people out there that defend inequality and the right to let people be poor so they can be rich

3. I'm not the only person who isn't a big fan of America

4. I'm not the only person who thinks the UK needs to get out of America's [wagon] and stand for it'self.

5. Some people just can't let go of things

6. Arguing over religion and politics on the internet is almost completely useless

7. I say almost completely because it does help to expand people's horizons a bit, and I think I've learned more about politics

8. Eating glass is bad, mkay.

When I registered here 8 years ago I was an impressionable wee kid, and it was the first forum I went to as well, so I've probably learnt innumerable usable things. Other than learning most of my English here, I've also learnt that there really is no other country I'd rather live in than Sweden.

But nowadays it pretty much embodies everything I dislike about the internet. There are the occasional light spots but they are very far between.

OT taught me how to make logical arguements to support my views. It also taught me of the existence of 4chan and Omegle.

- Many american stereotypes (of thought, not behaviour) are more correct than i had ever dreamed. this scares me.

I'm curious, what stereotypes would those be?

first I just want to point out that stereotypes are generalizations, therefore they show general trends, not the opinions of anyone in particular. they are also opinions, reflecting me.

- Americans believe in the right to freedom, even when the moral cost is substantial.

- The american justice system protects itself, not individuals

- Americans are mostly far to the right, politically.

- Religion stands strong in America, in principle, but the morality of religion seems lost.

- America has been holliwoodified by hollywood, culture (sports, music, opinion etc.) have changed accordingly

- extreme examples, dominate american opinions. they are scaremongered by their media

- differences in american society are massive. The middle class of america are worse off than in Europe.

- Socialism is always horrible, every man is his own castle.

- view and knowledge about the world outside america is limited. few actively seek this on their own, and must meet other cultures before they see things globally.

What a load of [cabbage].

Taught me how hard high-schoolers try to act scholarly.

How can you realize your intellectual potential unless you experiment as you grow up? academia is not for everyone

Lawl juxtaposition.

respecting someone's opinion, even though you disagree is often appreciated by those willing to give their honest opinions. I comparatively give my opinions, however irrational they are. that's why they are clearly presented as opinions, not as fact. Disagree, respectfully if you will.

I'm curious to see you try to characterize a culture different to your own. To claim my opinions are stupid, I assume you think you could do a better job yourself. Please do that. I'm interested in broadening my horizons.

your juxtaposition says more about you than me: criticism is a lot easier than constructive or reasoned criticism; Initial respect harder than xenophobic scorn.

1. Changed from being kind of meh about religion to defining myself as agnostic, and I'm currently leaning for atheism.

2. Realized the Internet is full of liberals who don't care squat about having a logical argument.

3. There are liberals who hate Obama.

4. Discovered DeviantART through Tif, I believe. Also GIMP and Firefox.

Plus a load of slightly disturbing things, some slightly useful things, and the fact that I'm not the only one who wets the toothbrush, puts paste on it, then gets it wet again. :P

I can't stand the brush being dry when I stick it in my mouth; it's much easier to spread the toothpaste over my teeth when the brush is wet, providing lubrication.

If people kept an open-mind about everything and strove to tried to be rational about everything, they would very possibly notice that they change their opinions regarding several things frequently (over years); the rational mind is ever-changing and ever-growing.

To the first quote: I do that too! No idea other people did that.

2)While the internet is indeed full of liberals, its only because most Republicans are basically Luddites of sorts. Also, they can have a logical argument, however they tend to uhhh stay strong in their convictions I guess. And then they use words like 'rational,' 'logical.' or 'fallacious' Which while some people do use corrrectly (and some people to keep an open mind) the majority have no idea what the words mean, or how to use them.

There are a ton of people who would rather argue against a strawman or an extreme example than the real thing too. It's easier to do that and prove yourself right than argue against the real thing and potentially *gasp* be wrong about something.

If you really want the last word in an argument, try saying 'I guess you're right'.... :P

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. I meant that the stereotypes you posted are cabbage, not your opinions. And you want stereotypes of other cultures from me? Hmm...I never liked stereotypes, but how about "All English people love football (soccer)". From my experience that has been accurate to a certain extent.
