Reputable Web Hosts

I've been looking for another web host and through looking over the results I was getting, I realized how huge of a scam is going on between 12 or so web hosting sites that have just flooded the first four pages of results. I was going through web hosts like Just Host, Lunar Pages, GoDaddy, Think Host...etc, mainly every web host on this page (in the lower right):

Every single one of those sites have numerous reports of people being scammed from them for billing issues and giving the runaround. All of their ToS's state that you'll be cut off if you exceed 300+ visitors, or if you start to use too much bandwidth, even though they state Unlimited all over their ads. So I am unable to determine the good from the bad.

 

Does anyone know of any decent web hosts that have some reputation to offer? It just seems like every web host I find has some 'sneaky' aspect to their ToS or have dozens of users complaining about their billing and terrible uptime...etc.

 

Or even a site that isn't reviewing and recommending scam web hosts as well, would be appreciated!

I was with izfree: http://izfree.com/ for a while, and they were great - the only problem is that as a free host people tend to take advantage of them and their servers go down a lot.

 

Running your own web server is always an option as well.

Trying to find reputable web hosts and I will be spending money. And I didn't make this topic in asking for help but more so finding any variety of web hosts that could be used by a multitude of people with different interests or uses.

 

Though if I think of it, $20 or less though and the ability to go from small traffic to medium traffic without having to pay my sanity. I'm also hoping the web host you're recommending is offering the standards?

Are you in college? If you are, some hosts give student discounts. I use 000webHost's free plan. I have a 100GB monthly bandwidth and 1.5GB of web space. I use it for testing random bits of code and to hold some images.

The host I have used since 1997 is pair Networks (pair.com). I have no idea if they provide precisely what you need, or how they compare to other services in terms of price. But they've been around a while (obviously) and they're good folks.

 

I strongly advise against running your own host, by the way. You can't duplicate the facilities and expertise that a proper web host brings to the table, at least not without spending a fortune.

But yes, I did mean $20 a month or less, as this is the price most people are going to be able to afford*. I don't think anyone here is going to put out more than $60 a month in web hosting if they're not earning money back or if they're not in it for a business related project. Like I have been trying to state, I don't want this topic to just be about my personal needs or preferences around web hosts. It is clear that one of my goals is to find a web host that I could use, but the goal I had was to just compile a list of different types of web hosts for different types of people for their different uses/needs. If I'm neglecting that you guys realize this and are just posting to help me out on the more personal goal, than I apologize, yet most of the responses have just been centred on my needs and not the topic's point.

 

If you post a web host, perhaps explain the strengths/weakness or pros and cons that that web host offer, or who the particular host would benefit the most.

 

 

*Yes, I realize the slight contradiction I make in this post.

Skatedog, go check out :arrow: 123EHost.com ... My parents and I use it, and it is quite economical, albeit they have rare, once-in-a-blue-moon issues. But for the costs (as low as $4.17/month) they post, it is worth that slight occasional headache. Heck, you might think they're talking madness to have those prices. But somehow, they've pulled it off, and they're feature-filled to the brim. :thumbsup:

I have been using Nearly Free Speech for quite some time now. It's really awesome, you only pay for what you use.

 

My current average spending is 2 cents per day. That's 0.60 per month, or just over 7 bucks a year. It's really awesome and allows you to host multiple sites on 1 account.

 

If you want cheap, reliable and many options, got for Nearly Free Speech ;D

000webhost's free plan is what I used for 2 websites I run.

 

Be wary if you plan on using a forum system though, since everything was perfect until they deleted my account since the forum was running slow mySQL queries without me knowing and this happened enough times so they deleted it - year's worth of forum postings deleted fml. But other than that, they've always been great. I would recommend them if you don't plan on running a very high traffic site.

GoDaddy. #1. Pretty much every host is going to pull the "unlimited" business, but only GoDaddy's lowest plan advertises that if I remember.

Probably better to stay away from hosting review sites than the hosts themselves. They are after you clicking on their affiliate link so they can pick up a commission.

 

I use a HostGator 'Baby Plan' now and had no problems yet. Unlimited domains, disk space, bandwidth, e-mail accounts, e-mail storage and much more. CPanel access is also a must-have for me, to get jobs done quickly.

 

Used to use GoDaddy but there were way too many '500 - Internal Server Errors'. Apparently, even though they guarantee 99% uptime, they allow a 6-8 second downtime limit for the page to load. Not good if you run loads of scripts, especially if you plan on running a PHP-based forum software. They offer cheap hosting space, but I'd rather pay £2 extra per month for visitors and myself to be happy with page load times. They sting you a bit with e-mail, claiming '500 e-mail accounts' for the 'Deluxe Plan', and that is true but only if each inbox is 1MB in size. 'You get what you pay for' is correct in this case, but it depends on your needs really.

I have found that the Whirlpool.net.au forums to be a good place to source web hosts... among other IT stuff.
