Haha actually its a G, so not quite that much, but it is loaded with sport package and premium package

Ahh such a nice car. Ridiculous that you got that as your birthday present though lol....

In general, I've noticed Americans having much nicer first cars than folks from the UK/Europe, that car is unreal compared to the first car I and many people I knew had.

We'd get raped off the insurance companies over here if we tried to insure a car like that when we were 17.

Same in Aus. its costs about $4k JUST for a slightly decent car with the average features like A/C, power steering and not so fuel guzzling, and the insurance is total BS. cost me ~$600 to fully rego/insure mine last year. took me 3 months to save up enough to afford it, AND ITS A FREAKING PEICE-OF-CRAP SEDAN!

Same in Canada for what you said, but the difference is that even if I have been driving my 2002 Toyota Echo that had 2 minor accidents before I owned it, and I have been driving for the last 7 years and never had an accident, I'm still paying over $1000 CAD in auto insurance per year.

Thats pretty ridiculous.

Theres certain car models over here that insurance companies will put the premiums up on due to their popularity with "boy racers" and modders, Honda Civic for example. A second hand Civic here, one of the older models, wouldn't cost all that much meaning it would be a good first car for someone, easy to drive, cheap and easy to find parts and stuff for. Phone the insurance company up, they find out you're a 20 year old male wanting to insure a Civic and think, "Ah, he's gonna mod the hell out of it then wrap it round a tree...give us [absurd sum of money] each year".

But I have an Echo, not a Civic haha.

But I agree, and I think it's a good thing they do that, makes it harder for young people to afford it and have accidents with their modded civics [or insert sporty car here].

Hahaha, it's not cheaper here either. Most kids don't get that good of car.

As for insurance, from the

I'm still paying over $1000 CAD in auto insurance per year.

When I was gonna buy the Rx8 (look at top of page), I called the insurance company and for me at 17 with that car that's worth 7000 usd, it would be $1036 every 6 MONTHS just for insurance.

Probably going to be the same thing for me insurance wise when I get a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer this summer or the one after...

The Echo is just too light for driving on snow.

Woah at that quote tree...honestly prices are outrageous until 25 if you aren't attached to your parents insurance, I definitely wouldn't be able to pay for insurance if it were not for my parents graciously offering to pay for it. But yes, it seems to me like it is much easier to get a nicer car in America than it is in Europe. The ridiculous taxes almost serve to double the price of the car outright compared to America, also factoring in double gas prices and increased insurance rates makes for a much more difficult buying environment.

For example:

I know people my age (17) with a 911, an M3, Challenger SRT8, 2011 Camaros/Mustang aplenty, BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, multiple people with Acuras and Lexuses (Lexi?), Nissan 350/370zs, and Infiniti G35 coupes.

I only lived in a city 6 months, but I still don't regret having a manual car. Although there are hills that are a pain in the ass because of traffic lights at the top.

  • 4 weeks later...

Underground tuning just released an R8 with over 1000 horsepower! Crazy. They haven't said really much else about it though. Here's pictures...

I dont know whether they just haven't put the bumper on yet, or they want to show off the engine, or they haven't made a bumper big enough to cover the beast, but anyways it doesn't have a bumper. Don't like it much without, hopefully they'll add one.

Looks terrible and will probably be massively unbalanced, handling like a dog. I hate to say it, but stereotypical American. It will probably be good in a straight line, but in what actually matters, corners, it will be totally useless. So much weight over the back end.

I'm not a fan of all power no corner. Much more entertaining to see cars which can go around a corner 2x the speed that another car can.

You're definitely right that it looks terrible (like that), and most likely right about the handling. Just thought it was neat to see my favorite car at over 1k hp.

I'm the same way about the power/handling. If I ever got a nicer car, i'd rarely be able to go even 100+, but if I had like a miata or something, probably have a lot more fun.

I'm... pissed I guess. I love cars, and I've been saving my money for 6 years to buy one. I have a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder, but I want a manual transmission car like that. I've wanted an RX8 or a 350Z (and then an Audi R8 for when I'm uber rich). Another opportunity like this isn't going to come up again.

Hi. I'm just curious, could you tell me the general price range of 350z's?

For a 2003 coupe, most are listed around $11,000-$12,000. There's a few at $10,000, and some dealers will put them up to $15,000. This is the same for Boise, Portland, and Minneapolis craigslists, along with eBay motors, so I assume universally the same in the US.

RX8's are a bit cheaper, usually being $10,000-$12,000 with a few even at $8000.

I've seen RX8s with salvages at $6000-$7000 and 350zs with salvage at $8000-$10000 if you want to go that route.

So I heard a story regarding my local highschool involving cars that might make you guys rage as well...

There was a 16 year old girl who was given a yellow H2 Hummer for her 16th birthday, brand new off the lot. Within a month, she totaled the car and was given a brand new one after she was released from the hospital with minor injuries. How did she get in a wreck? She was texting while going heavily over the speed limit and not wearing a seat belt.

What did they do with the wrecked car? They put it on the corner of the campus parking lot with a big sign saying "[Her name] and [school's name] say don't text while driving!"

Some times, the richer you are/parents are, the more stupid you drive. If you, like me had to earn the money for your car for a year, have to pay over half your wages into insurance/tax/petrol, you don't ever risk doing anything stupid.

It's either fake or the girl is getting her ass spoiled like hell.

I have a freakin $3,000 car and if I managed to even total that...It's basically over for me. Nobody should be stupid enough to text,

speed, and not wear a seatbelt at the same time. [bleep], she shouldn't even be on the streets for heavens' sake!

Agreed, and even if I total mine, I can't afford a new one until the next year or so, so I take extreme care of the way I drive. The problem is others, where we have to drive for others and not ourselves. I almost got rear-ended a few times this week by people talking on cells/texting... Never was that bad as usually most people drive pretty carefully in my small city.

Getting the insurance renewed on my car either this week or next week, be good to finally be back behind the wheel.

Also, out of curiosity, what are the roads like in your areas?

Here, we've got potholes everywhere, partly due to all the snow and cold weather we had over Christmas but the local council have done bugger all to fix them. I was speaking to a friend who is an apprentice mechanic and he said something like 3/4's of the cars that have came in since the snow and whatever has disappeared have needed the shocks and suspension fixed or replaced, which is something I can believe. Other than that, the roads about here are pretty good for driving. I'm near the edge of the town where I stay so I've got a load of winding backroads going through forest and farmland that are pretty fun to drive, especially in summer.

And totaling a Hummer, thats got to be some kind of achievment.

Well, in my area, well supposedly my province has one of the worst road conditions of the country. Some roads have 1' deep potholes (even a highway where people have to change lanes because hitting a bunch of those potholes at 110KM/h (which is the limit) is pretty dangerous). In the city here, I believe they should higher a better company, since the one we have now, there are no signs put on roads (except one place where they closed one lane of the road for like 20m), and when they put a patch, which is already pretty rare, the patch is already gone by the end of 1 hour. Sometimes they do a better job, like one patch on a road I use to go to work everyday, patch has been there 2 days, over a pothole going almost side to side of the road and that was 1 foot deep at some places, but it's already starting to break, and it's annoying getting all those mini-rocks on the car..

Anyway, guess there's a lot of places with bad roads at this time of the year.
