Your phone: is it your property?

I own a cell phone.

I have it with me daily, and keep a charger in my car.

I have valid reasons for this.

1) It allows people to contact me when I am not home, I am often away from my house, especially when I was enrolled in Uni and traveling. No one has ever gave me grief for missing calls.

2) My grandparents health is on the decline, it's nice to be able to know if something happens and be available for an emergency

3) Texts allow me to communicate short messages to people and bypass phone calls to communicate

4) I have a job, something I presume you don't by your attitude, due to the nature of my job, I'm on call to a degree.

5) Mobile web allows me to check things as the need arises - pricecheck something on amazon, reverse look up a number or get directions or check my dvd collection page to see if i own that movie before i buy it.

6) Mobile IM - Lets me assist in running this forum if something is needed on the road.

My parents, understand and realize I'm a 22 year old with a degree from a university - why would they worry? I can handle myself? If you're parents worry and you feel the cell phone is a burden due to this, you're clearly under 18, or you have strict parents .

I don't always answer my phone, some days, I might not feel like talking, or i'm doing something important. I don't take my phone to church, out of respect for god's house, and I don't reply to texts.

Infact I got a text from my coworker at Noon. - I didn't bother replying to him until I came into work 5 hours later, he didn't even think anything of it.

Last night I got a text from a girl I like, I responded in under a minute.

Today I got a call from my buddy who has been my friend since 6th grade. I was watching an episode of Angel, and didn't feel like pausing it. I called him back 45 minutes later.

It's an issue that you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

It's been invaluable for times when

1) I'm picking up an item for a friend/family member at a store and forgot wtf i'm supposed to pick up

2) Group projects in uni

3) Calling my boss when my tire was flat and would be late for a critical meeting at work

4) Making plans on the Fly

5) being able to talk to pretty women anywhere and everywhere.

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."

i find it interesting that noone has commented on my facebook comparison at all. facebook runs our lives more, and is less essential, making for a less bombastic debate/discussion/argument? Or I may be living under a rock in a cave here?

Facebook doesn't run our lives. Unless you allow it too. It is a tool for keeping in touch with people and helping to organise events; nothing more nothing less

how many hours a week do you spend on facebook, and how many hours a week do you tinker with your cell phone?

Spending time using or with something does not equate to it running your life.

I spend all my time in glazed and heated buildings, heating and glazing doesnt run my life.

These features are great, but I'm more concerned with the price you pay to have them: constantly having to keep tabs on the location of your little plastic box. Do you have anything to say about that part of the discussion? Your post talked about the benefits of cell phones. I know the benefits of cell phones. But you didn't say anything about the price that you pay.

This is pretty rude, but unfortunately you are correct at the time. My job ended with the spring semester. But, I am in grad school for education, and I start 30 hr/wk internship in the fall.

But what you mentioned IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.

One of the reasons you have a phone is because your job expects you to carry a phone. My discussion is trying to bring to light any comment you have on the ridiculousness that many parts of our society now demand for us to be available via phone and carry our little friend with us everywhere we go.

In my mind, its a few steps away from having government issued PDA's (like many science fiction movies/books suggest)

Eh, just wanted to point out that mobile phones do exist without costing hundreds of pounds. Mine cost £30, my brother had one that cost £15. The supposed 'cost' is just people's own desires for a mobile phone - and just because *everyone* has an iPhone these days... doesn't mean they do. If you understand my meaning.

The quote in the beginning of your post said it all. "Invention is the mother of necessity."

Bathtubs, toilets, soap, housing, clothes, etc were all at one point not invented. Nowadays, its almost mandatory on having these things. Why are cell phones different? Because we hadn't gotten used to them yet. A car without a radio is odd, a household with no TV is odd, a man with no clothes is odd. Eventually all things will become "necessities" like the quote says they will be. So you can either hold a selfish traditionalist view or move on.

Extremism is something different, of course. Checking Facebook/Twitter every minute, sending a text every half minute, is extreme and shouldn't be done in the first place. Watching too much TV or overspending to buy clothes or taking a shower every hour is also extreme and shouldn't be done.

What about the fact that you are going to be carrying this "necessity" with you everywhere you go? You can go somewhere and not bring your toilet, and nothing will happen. But if you just neglect your phone for a week, someone is probably gonna think you died. The only other thing I can think of that is similar on your list there is clothing. Do we really want machines to become the same category as clothing?

I wasn't talking about the price in money...I was talking about the "price" in the fact that you have to carry this object with you everywhere you go. Kind of like the price that a dog pays for safety. Sure, we might keep him safe from bears, but he has to sit there tied up in the yard, or fenced in.

I mean, even if you buy a mobile just for emergencies in your car, you still HAVE to have it with you everywhere you drive. You dont know when an emergency will happen so it has to be in your car.

Same for contact purposes. If you own a cell because you want to be available in a family emergency, you have to have it with you everywhere.

I'm not a proclaimer of technology neither, but, it's going to happen when phones will be as important as clothes one day or another. When the human race becomes more technologically advanced we will need something to access information at a will's notice. Cell phones with the internet browser thingy work like this. Wikipedia works like this.

And truthfully you should smack those people who think you're dead if you hadn't been on your phone for a week. That's the extremism I spoke about in my last post.

Do you have to keep up with a Wallet? Keys? Any real objects that require any form of responsibility? I put my keys, wallet and cell in the same place every night. Else it is in my pants pocket it's not like i have to keep it on a leash, it has a ringer.

So... why is it a bad thing to have a cell phone always with you? It seems silly to shun something like that, it'd be like shunning telephones because "Well I can just go over to their house and talk to them".

And the person who says he just talks face to face, well, this might be hard to believe but there can be people you want to talk to that you can't always see "face to face". You know, whole being a number of states away from them and all. Just because something can make our lives easier and more convenient does not make it a bad thing. Carrying it around is not a "burden" either, my cell is just always in my right pocket if I need it.

I think if you hate technology that much, you should go become amish or quaker.

Because if I have any sense of a belief, my entire life therefore has to be a complete devotion to that belief. Right?

So... why is it a bad thing to have a cell phone always with you?

Because it is becoming such a substitution for real, human interaction. Also, it is a crutch to many people. People in modern societies DEPEND on their phone. Do you really enjoy having more and more technology that you DEPEND on? I like to live my life not being ruled by my machines. My machines work for me, I don't keep it with me like a baby I am caring for. Also, the full effects of the long term radiation exposure have still not been studied well enough.

What exactly is GOOD about always having something with you? I'm not asking what is good about a cell phone, I am asking why it is desireable to carry another object with you everywhere you go, every day of your life.

In another 100 years, I imagine humans wearing a utility belt crammed full of various high tech devices that are only "necessary" because they were invented.

Billions of people lived before you without a cell phone, but now that it has been invented, people think it is better to have one than to not have one, and everyone needs one. Now you are stupid if you COULD have a cell phone, but choose not to.

I guess George Washington just lived a terrible life then...

Also Nadril, would you get your cell implanted into your head if you could?

It's no different than a car or a facebook. I've ran into people who dont have a cell phone more than people who don't have a facebook. So you can either accept your argument is initially flawed or denounce technology altogether. Social Norms change, with our without you - and will continue to do so. You can bet your ass if the goverment said I needed a tracking RFID or Christianity was banned - i would say no, and if it was a problem, they could come and install one over my cold dead, lifeless body - because I choose to stand up for those issues, Thats too far in controlling my life, Too far in the application of technology. So you either feel strongly about it, or you don't.

Do you really enjoy having more and more technology that you DEPEND on? I like to live my life not being ruled by my machines. My machines work for me, I don't keep it with me like a baby I am caring for.

You ever worked manual labor? Did anything the hard way? I'm strongly doubting no by your posting so far. Ever milked a cow? Planted a garden? These things can be done by machine, they can be done manually. A cell phone is a convenience.

What exactly is GOOD about always having something with you? I'm not asking what is good about a cell phone, I am asking why it is desireable to carry another object with you everywhere you go, every day of your life.

Whats bad about it? It's a convenience, it's not like when i'm eating , i'm going to freak out and stop and chat, I will check the caller ID, because it could be a family emergency, but if it's a friend, they will wait as long as I deem necessary. Phones have voicemail.

Billions of people lived before you without a cell phone, but now that it has been invented, people think it is better to have one than to not have one, and everyone needs one. Now you are stupid if you COULD have a cell phone, but choose not to.

I guess George Washington just lived a terrible life then...

My Grandparents, Grew up in the depression, and you know as much as they talk about the good old days, they sure as hell don't want to go back to that and they know that. Do you think Washington would of preferred a flush toilet and a sink with hot water or a hole in the ground? Do you think Washington would of preferred muskets or m16s?

I grew up on Dial up, Did I have it bad? No, it was what I knew, all anyone knew and the norm. I had a cell phone with a game boy (green/black) Led when I was 16, SMS wasn't mainstream and phones didn't have keyboards, cameras or the internet. Hell, We had MIDI ringtones, and they were COOL. Why did I have a cell at 16? I drove a motor Vehicle, and I had a job. I could of got stranded or in an accident and needed to make a call.

It's a tool, nothing more, nothing less, it's up to someone to decide how to use the tool, and yes, I carry it around with me, I also carry my wallet. It's a convenience, and you can say i'm addicted to it, and i'm going to say you're naive, and haven't hit the real world yet in terms of actual responsibility. Sorry if thats harsh. You can go without a cell phone, It may affect your ability to maintain a job with lots of responsibility, and it may cost you friends (so you say, i've yet to meet someone who cared about if people had a cell to be friends) - But how thats how you choose to live life.

Uh... nothing? It all depends on the usefulness of the thing being carried, I don't think anyone here carries a cell phone with them because it's a socially-required piece of equipment, I think it's because it's a piece of technology that helps us function better.

Honestly, you're just thinking this over way too much. A cellphone is a way to interact when people aren't there with us. If you're texting someone purposely in place of talking to them, you've got a problem that doesn't have to do with the phone, but with the person. Saying that it's "destroying life as we know it" is ridiculous.

It's a useful device for a number of reasons.

I need a phone. Be it corded or a cell phone I need one. I live on my own states away from my parents (I go to college in Kansas and they live in Virginia). Since I still am a student I'm not exactly independent enough exactly that I never need to talk to them. A landline is a waste for me and it's cheaper to just be on a family plan with my current cell phone. Plus, you know, it's convenient.

I don't understand why it is a substitution for "real" (what do you constitute as real and fake interaction anyways? I figured talking to another person would be interacting with them.) interaction more-so than an addition. It's not like people only talk using cell phones. It may be a surprise to you but people have schedules and often times you can't exactly know when a good time to talk to someone is or, hell, where the [bleep] they are at the time. Instead of doing a man hunt around the entire city you can shoot them a text or a call. (Which can be really useful if, for example, you're trying to find out when a certain project or due or what is happening in class tomorrow. Or, hell, if you're trying to plan something like a party/hanging out with the other person).

I don't see why you are so against having a cell phone. Again this is not a burden on me. I like my cell phone. I can browse the web on a slow day when I'm not near a PC, I have the ability to contact people from anywhere (which is useful for just enjoyment, school purposes or even in the case of an emergency.). Speaking of emergencies, you mentioned you could just go walk somewhere. Well if you were in a car accident would you rather someone just use their cell phone to call 911 or would you want them to have to try and walk miles to a rest stop area to use a pay phone, by which this time you're probably in critical condition.

It's not like you're lugging around a giant backpack alongside of you. Even using a smart phone it takes up no room in my pocket and it's smaller than my wallet. (Well, about the same size just skinnier). This isn't some giant burden you always have to have with you, it's something that is nice to have.

You need to stop exaggerating so much by the way. I mean, "utility belt with 100's of items" is clearly you over exaggerating. If you would have noticed by now we, as a society, have been slimming down our gadgets. Compare a cell phone from the 90's to a cell phone now. It's stupid to think that we're going to be over burdened with hundreds of items when we have clearly been moving towards only having one (or a couple) of "devices" in our life.

Also Nadril, would you get your cell implanted into your head if you could?

Where the [bleep] did this come from? I'm sorry but you really shouldn't be arguing if you continue to ask stupid questions like that. I know what you're getting at but it's ridiculous.

g00d, I agree with Das that you should just go ammish. It clearly seems like you hate technology. By the way, give up your car. George washington didn't have a car and he got around just fine. It's ridiculous to think people have to drive everywhere, I mean you can just walk!

Why is this even a question? A cell phone is useful, therefore I have one. If it didn't have a use I wouldn't have one. As for becoming integrated into society as a sort of "necessity", the same argument could be applied to almost every piece of technology. You could just walk everywhere instead of owning a car, but I'm sure you'd agree that in most parts of the world a car is certainly worth the cost. There's no need for the internet, you could use books for research and send people letters, but that takes a lot longer to accomplish what would be an otherwise simple task.

Society trends towards doing everything as fast as possible and technology is making the need for instantaneous results more and more accessible. Whether that's a good or bad thing doesn't matter, it can't be stopped or avoided.

This thread made me lol.

I'd say without a doubt, the phone is my property. I use it when i need to contact friends/family to organisze things and can be contacted if something happens. I don't go around with it glued to my ear, i only use it when i have to. It's a very convenient piece of kit to have and i don't really see any reason why someone should be without one this day in age, as the benefits far outweigh the cons.

I have mine mostly to text parents, I hardly ever use it really. I'll text a friend if they text first or I ask them to go somewhere... I'm not sure why really, I just don't really like texting, I talk to friends mostly over facebook..

They are very useful things though, every time I'm out of credit I need it.

Whats wrong with it being mandatory, if you know a better way then to keep in touch with people whereever whenever let me know. Because it sure is useful.

You guys are still missing the question of the thread. I ask you what is good about ALWAYS HAVING to use something.

I am not asking you the benefits of the cell phone. I know why the device was invented and I know what it is used for.

But my point is that the technology has infiltrated our lives so much that it makes people lazy, impatient, and lose sight of what life would even be like without this invention. They lose sight of the fact that it is just some object in your world, not a part of human existence.

That is my viewpoint on why it can be a bad idea to RELY on TECHNOLOGY in general (not just cell phones).

What I am asking is whether or not you have a problem with the role that devices play in our lives now. Our jobs expect us to use them, our friends expect us to use them.

Eventually there will be a high tech device for everything. Eventually, I bet we will be able to have our entire body replaced by mechanical implants. Would YOU do that?

That is what I am asking. I picked out the cell phone because it is the first piece of technology that we carry by our sides virtually all the time. The only difference between having a cell phone implanted in your head and the way that most people use their cell phones is that the cell is just physically outside their body. It is still with them just as much as some type of crazy robotic implant is.

I'm not asking you if you like the benefits that the invention of the cellphone gives to the human race. I am asking if you like the idea of humans starting to have these types of devices with them 24/7 or not.

Whats wrong with it being mandatory, if you know a better way then to keep in touch with people whereever whenever let me know. Because it sure is useful.

Billions of people lives happy lives before the invention. We only think that this type of communication is "better" because the invention came along and someone sold it to us.

It's pretty rediculous how many people in this thread are living as slaves to media and commercialization, without even questioning the origins of objects, or examining if these objects are inherently good or only seem "good" because commercials tell us to need them. I suppose the posts in this thread are just a prime example of the problem I am talking about, and how much of a brainwash these companies really have on you guys.

Thousands of years ago, people managed to live their lives with a hut made out of sticks. Do you really think that you have an objectively "better" life than they did? Do you think they didnt enjoy their life?

Do you really enjoy having more and more technology that you DEPEND on? I like to live my life not being ruled by my machines. My machines work for me, I don't keep it with me like a baby I am caring for.

Lol this is ridiculous. I am the one questioning the need for technology, and you make an immature unreasonable assumption like this. What is your reasoning behind this? I seriously don't even understand. A guy says that we DONT need this crazy technology, but you seem to think that guy doesn't enjoy doing things with a hands on approach. I have done plenty of manual labor, thank you very much. And it is probably the reason that I hold the views that I do. A hard life breeds character. A life of laziness builds obesity and spoiled brats.

You don't always have to use it. It's just there.

But my point is that the technology has infiltrated our lives so much that it makes people lazy, impatient, and lose sight of what life would even be like without this invention. They lose sight of the fact that it is just some object in your world, not a part of human existence.

Go grow your own food, dig your own well, churn your own butter, hunt with stone tools, and walk to wherever you need to be. After all our ancestors did it without complaining. Having supermarkets and cars must make us extremely lazy.

What I am asking is whether or not you have a problem with the role that devices play in our lives now. Our jobs expect us to use them, our friends expect us to use them.

No I do not. and even if you are expected to use them, you don't have if you don't want to.

Eventually there will be a high tech device for everything. Eventually, I bet we will be able to have our entire body replaced by mechanical implants. Would YOU do that?

Yes. The human body itself is extremely weak compared to the other animals of the world. If we can have something to enhance our strength or do something by thinking about it then life would become easier and save times for the things we actually want to do.

That is what I am asking. I picked out the cell phone because it is the first piece of technology that we carry by our sides virtually all the time. While teenage girls are pissing annoying with their constant texing, having a cell phone isn't going to cause a robot uprising that you seem to think will happen.

I HAVE churned butter from milk. I have made my own yogurt and cottage cheese. I have killed a deer, and cleaned it down to the bones with my knife and my bare hands. I am 25% native american, and I have been to my tribe's ground to experience the way that my ancestors lived. I have gone camping with nothing but a good friend, a pair of boots, the clothes on my back, and a utility knife.

Does every need to go DO this? No. But I do it to gain a complete appreciation of what it means to exist in the world. Even if you don't want to go experience these things, I still think it is important to at least THINK about it, and be aware of the fact that life today is no more of an absolute good than life was 100s of years ago.

With every new invention comes new expectations. We are always looking for the newer more powerful phone. We invent the car, then we want to fly. We invent the plane, then we want to go into space. People just get greedy with all this fancy technology. You think your phone is so cool and important, but the people 200 years from now are gonna look at you and laugh.

Ask a 10 year old where his hamburger meat comes from. I bet he will tell you "The store!" or "A factory". Lots of technology and commercialization dilutes reality if you aren't careful enough to think about it.

And really. Honestly, phones could be a cause of cancer. We aren't sure yet that they are safe to use. Anybody want to comment on this?

I guess brain tumors are a small price to pay for faster acess to your Facebook.

I still don't understand why you're so against the "social requirement" of owning a cell phone, could you explain that a little better? Will they become acceptable to you once we can communicate instantaneously via a chip implanted into our brain? I can't understand why it's the only piece of technology you have a vendetta against.

I do think that we are far to reliant on cell phones and a need to always be able to be in contact with the rest of the world (that's why I like going camping), however it's my opinion that if you're able to drive or go places by yourself often you should own a cell phone.

I've had a phone since I was 9. It was useful, helped me socially, was interesting, etc.

You don't seem to have made any valid arguments; if you aren't just trolling and actually think what you're writing you are either really deluded or overreacting. Or both. You know clothes? It's horrible that people expect you to have them, people are so dependent on them, they are social norms etc. People are the slaves of clothes. Imagine if your car broke down, you would need clothes- Blah blah blah you get the point. Cellphones are different? Cellphones are cheap and disposable, easy to find, and people can become addicted to clothes too (As with just about anything). You have to know where they are all the time? So what, you could say the same about your keys, or, for that matter, your clothes. Yeah, it's technology. Who cares. Get over it.

As for the "Risk" of cancer, I don't have time to link you directly to an article, but here's the google search I did for it, they're the first results:
