The Metal Thread

Recommended Posts

I can't help but notice a lack of all things metal and of metallic substance in the Music, Movies and Television forum... So, I thought, what can I do to help? Make a thread! So, just discuss all things metal here, from black metal to power metal, any genre and any band.

Well, I'm a huge fan of metal myself, it's my favourite genre. I love the vastness of it, it can incorporate so many different styles and still sound brilliant. I mainly a fan of progressive and power, but I also love doom, black, folk, industrial etc. etc. I love all forms of metal. My favourite bands being Kamelot, Sonata Arctica and Agalloch.

So, please, let's get some metal discussion going here. We're severely lacking... :D

Hm, i actually think metal threads pops up every now and then.

Personally i haven't been listening to metal for quite a while. I basically only listened to metal from 9-18/19, but not since then. Yeah i fire up a track every now and then, but it's like i over-played metal because i have no interest in it at the moment. I have started to widen my interest and taste in music since then tho. Jungle, drum'n'bass, trance/techno (altho i've liked that for quite long, deepened my interest), 60/70's music (mainly prog, rock, psychedelic), country (altho it's hard to find good stuff, most seems to be about love blahblahblah), haven't listened to much blues lately either. Something which i want to discover is classic music, especially dark/heavy pieces, like Griegs "In the hall of the mountain king".

Yo. Yeah, we need one of these.

Kamelot and Agalloch are incredible. Karma and The Black Halo are probably two of the best symphonic metal albums out there in a genre that's usually really awful. Khan has so much charisma and the emotions and atmosphere he wants to convey in the music and lyrics always shines through as it's intended. Regarding Agalloch, I like Pale Folklore and Ashes Against the Grain. They're the band that got me into folk and later black metal; their music just never gets old.

I mostly like death metal, black metal, doom metal and power metal. Melodic death metal really doesn't click with me as much as it used to - I would rather listen to death metal and power metal seperately rather than mixed together. Some of my favourite bands include: Neuraxis, Anata, Morbid Angel, Warning, Emperor, Impaled Nazarene, Fates Warning, Versailles, Insomnium, Electric Wizard and the aforementioned Agalloch and Kamelot.

Anyone into crust and grindcore here (if the OP doesn't mind us discussing metal offshoots ITT)? I've been looking for some good melodic crust for a while but all of it seems boring. Fall of Efrafa and Perth Express are decent though. GridLink, Splitter, Japanische Kampfhoerspiele, Pig Destroyer, Nasum and Napalm Death are my favourite grindcore bands.

Check my last.fm for more. Not scrobbled everything I've listed yet though.

Crust/Grindcore: I like Darkthrone's newer Crust influenced albums. I like Fall of Efrafa as well but you already mentioned that. For Grindcore: Napalm Death, Anaal Nathrakh (not really sure what theyre considered but can be under Grindcore), Cattle Decapitation, and Carcass are good.

Keepy in mind I define genres pretty loosely.

I listen to most kinds of metal, and consider my taste in music quite diverse.

Any one hear Wretched - The Exodus Of Autonomy from last year? Critics were split on whether the album was any good, half said it was, half said it wasn't. i thought it was brillliant, and really enjoyed listening to it.

Which albums are you guys looking forward to from the rest of this year?

So far this year theres been some good and some bad albums. I was not impressed with Dark Tranquility's album, but loved Solution .45s.

@Lenin: You might wanna check Running Wild out if you're into Alestorm. They were doing something similar a long time ago. They're pretty good as well. Under Jolly Roger is probably the album to get.

@Maleficus: I never liked Darkthrone's crust much. Their latest album is really good, though. Anaal Nathrakh is certainly influenced by grind so I guess they would count if you're fairly liberal about it. They're a good listen once in a while, too.

@istolethepie: Try Protest the Hero, perhaps.

@Lenin64 Hmmm, never liked Alestorm, found them a bit gimmicky.

@SilverSword Metal offshoots are fine methinks. Also, you said my sentiments about Kamelot and Agalloch perfectly. Khan is just amazing, have you watched One Cold Winter's Night, it's brilliant. He's such a showman. But I do prefer Ghost opera to Karma, although the Elizabeth trilogy is mindblowing. I can't wait for the new album!

Also, Agalloch are the band that got me into folk and black too =D Although you could also blame that on LastFm. Also, I heat Agalloch will be recording a new album in the summer.

@alg Yeah, Twisted Mind was nice but I felt with The Scarecrow, and the Metal Operas (I haven't heard TWS or AOB yet) that Tobias took too much rein. So many of the tracks would sound better if he gave the guest vocalists more of a chance, because to be honest, he does have a bit of a boring and generic voice in my opinion.

What are your guys most anticipated albums this year? 'Cause I have a feeling this is gonna be a good year for metal.

Alestorms album Black Sails at Midnight, was no where near as good as Captain Morgans Revenge. However, I really like Swashbuckles album, Back to the Noose, its wicked.

Anyone heard of World Under Blood? I'm really looking forward to their album. It'll be their debut, but they've got Tim Yeung on drums, Deron Miller on guitar and vocals, and some other people as well. The tracks on their myspace are pretty rocking.

Anticipated albums: Well Burzum was released, new Equilibrium was as well. Rumors are that a new Demons & Wizards will come out the end of the year. Their self-titled is possibly my favorite album ever, i'm really excited if thats true. I think there should be a new Primordial as well, don't quote me on that though.

I'm honestly not a big metal guy. I like it, but it's just such a huge genre I have no clue where to start.

Blind Guardian's new one is due out within a month or so too.

I enjoy most metal, except for some of the black/whatever it's called metal. Some of the stuff just sounds like a wall of noise to me, and the quality of the sound kinda puts me off.

I haven't really gone searching for many new metal bands/albums, but my favourite album this year would have to be Sabaton's Coat of Arms. <3 them.

I love metal, but there are so many subgenres that are annoying to distinguish - often causing massive Youtube comment arguments. It is such a large genre though, I've explored metal for almost a decade and yet there are bands that I have no time to check out because I'm busy listening to something else that I like.

But yeah, I find that power metal satisfies me most. I find bands like Iced Earth and Firewind quite appealing. Black metal is quite cool, my favourites being Mayhem and Dimmu Borgir.

Kamelot are pretty epic.

Anyone know of any good bands that are similar in style to Rammstein?

Tried In Extremo? They're a bit folkier though.

edit: also, try Ooomph!. They're a lot more Rammstein-esque.

This isn't metal, but it comes from a predominantly metal band. Road Salt One by Pain of Salvation. Has anyone here listened to it, and if so what do they think of it? To me it sounds brilliant, and I really can't wait for Road Salt Two later this year. Sisters is amazing.

Also, I found black metal hard to get into, a bit like a wall of noise to me at the start. I listened to some Agalloch though, and that changed my perspective. I kinda went into the "blacker" stuff from there. To the Dimmu fan, I really can't help but find Dimmu realllllly boring. Although I do like Vortex's vocals. And... Rumoured Arcturus reunion with Vortex AND Garm! :D

I love Pain of Salvation, though Scarsick is my favorite. Road Salt One was.......ok, I guess. I liked Sleeping Under the Stars on that quite a bit though.

I love the cabaret influence in Sleeping Under the Stars, it's hilarious but brilliant. And Scarsick is way underrated, loads of the prog elitists look down on it because it has rapping, but I find it just as meaningful as BE.

One Hour By the Concrete Lake is my favourite Pain of Salvation album. The others are all pretty meh to me.

Anyone into Nevermore here? Their latest album came out a while ago and it's pretty solid. Nowhere near as incredible as This Godless Endeavor, but it's definitely worth a listen.

I thought the new Nevermore album was pretty average in comparison to This Godless Endeavor. I did enjoy listening to it. Although This Godless Endeavor is a wicked album, I prefer Enemies of Reality.

Anyone catch Shining - Blackjazz? Possibly my favourite album released this year. Its a haggard Black Metal/ Jazz cross album, that is just chaotic at points, but its brilliant.
