InfamousDuck Posted June 25, 2010 Share Posted June 25, 2010 Some of you probably remember that back in April Jagex released a thread about supported fansites and they also rated fansites by plainum, gold, silver etc. Back then we were only rated as a Gold Fansite and many people were disappointed by this (You can read all about it here http://forum.tip.it/topic/262943-fansite-support-re-launch/ Mod Hohbein even posted on the thread), anyway though now we have been promoted :P to Platinum level, the best of the best. But annoyingly the problems were overcome before they even posted the thread. We have recently removed Google Adverts from our rotation of advertising networks, and we believe this will help with removing a lot of troublesome adverts, reducing the need for you to report them. However, we would like to ask another favour of our community. Tip.It is constantly aiming to strengthen relationships with Jagex where possible and with this in mind, we would very much appreciate your help with spotting adverts for games which are not RuneScape or FunOrb. This includes anything from single player flash games all the way to very large competing MMORPGs. We'd like you to start reporting adverts for games as and when you see them. The easiest way to get the details to us (if you don't know the website the game will be located on) is to click the advert, record the URL and then report this URL to us. We will then have it removed from the advertising rotation as soon as possible. As always, the thread for reporting adverts can be found here. The matter is being discussed on our forums here. Tip.it was one of the first fansites back when we still had Scapeboard and deserved this way before certain other sites. I'm sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about, and it infuriates me to no end when people assume that tip.it sucks up to Jagex. The rules here have always been that we respect the Runescape rules and will remove anything that violates them, yet we get called out for sucking up to them because of this list? We have taken no hit in revenue by the advert change so it would have been idiotic not to do it. But yet somehow we are still sucking up? There is a huge difference between being smart and respectful and what we always seem to get accused of. *end of rant* OT: It's nice to know we are platinum now, I don't think we were informed of this (Or at least admins haven't told us), and it should give us a nice little bit of advertising. Spot on, brown nose your way to the top! I don't think either of you understand what we actually changed and the reasons for changing our advertising services. First of all, as Danq mentioned, the advertising changes implemented did not affect our revenue and we continue to get virtually the same amount of revenue as we did before we made the change. Secondly, we have always had problems with GoogleAds. They have a limited amount of bans you can put in place, and after that we simply had to delete old entries to make room for new ones. This was quickly becoming problematic. Jagex's policy of not having competitor ads in order to reach the platinum rank simply gave us a little bit of an incentive to finally do something about it. So basically, for fixing something we've been meaning to change for ages, we're now listed as a platinum support site. How some people consider this brown-nosing, I will never know. I don't even think the ad platform change really affected anyone who uses our site either. Never understood what the big uproar about this is and I never will. That's something i haven't appreciated because it limits the discussion value, and community value of tip.it (and all the other platinum sites). Sure it is, because that is probably the only valid concern that should be coming from this - is Tip.It losing anything by removing competitor ads? The answer is no. We are not going out of our way at all to please Jagex. I just finished clarifying how it was something we meant to do anyways, and so we get a few perks as well for doing it. Great. Yeah, we're not filtered in-game and we get free advertising on the RSoF. That beats the hell out of the possible alternative - being filtered in-game, doesn't it? Jagex doesn't write our rules, Jagex doesn't enforce our rules, Jagex doesn't tell us how to enforce our rules.
