The path less traveled i take is going around frustrating/annoying other players for fun.

IE.

Using ice barrage/burst at bandit camp/other muticombat training spots.

Using the teleother spells on people when they are in dangerous situations (when they are boss hunting, pvp worlds, ect)

Killing the unicorns people at SC like to cast stun on.

Casting wind strike while it splash on monsters like blue dragons to prevent others from killing it.

Using cannons at crowded places like blue drags.

Stealing other people's net trap spots.

Throwing snowballs at random people.

Burn logs in the formation of a swatsticka.

I could probably think of some more things i've done before.

Also, is there a trade limit on grey wolf furs?

Very classy. Especially the log burning thing.

OT: Great articles this week. Kudos to all involved!

( Ask yourself, "Am I having fun doing this?" Is it really fun to run between a bank and a furnace over and over? Is it really fun to run laps of the same agility course over and over? Is it really fun to chop the same few trees over and over? ) Funny you say so. Does anyone feel like Runescape has become a literal second life? A virtual second form of who we are?

I'm not alone in saying that work at most jobs is the same thing day to day, so what is skilling on runescape but a second job? Those sly buggers... they got us doing the work and were paying out the butt for it x)

About a week ago I sat by the ancient cavern whirlpool with someone I know in rs and talked for 5 hours. We did nothing but sit there and talk, gaining no xp at all. Was it a waste of time? Perhaps. Was it fun? Hell yeah, it was a blast =D.

I raced that same friend in the agility arena in Brimhaven, seeing who could get to the next pillar first. There are so many ways you can have fun in rs, with or without skilling.

Come, be my light.

Mingle with my darkness

May we mix to create

Our own twilight sunset

The dusk breeze

Spreading clouds

On our murky horizon

You are an ass, GTFO troll.

Article 2: Good for you, you had fun. But hundreds of thousands of people grind skills, so there's obviously something nice about the accomplishment

Article 1: I think maybe a thousand people even noticed that Jamflex changed those things in F2P, other than the 7 day mems trial. Also, Runescape with members and Runescape without members are very different, and could almost be considered two different games. And yeah, it's always been 5.95 or back to F2P for you... no change there.... derp?

"The path less travelled" is an awesome article. It should be read by everyone, I think. Because the real, true path of Runescape is really the one which is the less travelled; The one of fun. And I believe that by reading this article you can actually start thinking a bit more about all this grinding. I know that I did.

I like skilling because I can multitask, and I like multitasking. That's why I spend lots of time skilling and never grow tired of it. But then some times I want to actually play RuneScape, and not just glance at the screen one every 3 minutes, so then I do some pvm or sometimes pvp, and I love dungeoneering too.

ROFLOL @ Bessy the Dairy Cow. RuneScape really is a violent game, but we get used to it and don't realize how violent it is because there isn't blood all over like there would be in real life.

So you say. That is how you play, but not most people. As I said before, the main problem with the article is its completely based on assumptions, and those are wrong for many people.

Loved the articles; glad people liked the DYK.

I hadn't noticed a 7-day free member's trial, but I wonder if they really made the climbing boots update to cover it up...

Also liked the 2nd article, i hadn't done things exactly like that, but much of the time, I do things that givem e any benefits besides fun. :D

Likewise your criticism is based on an assumption. Have you ever fooled around with a good friend doing something almost entirely pointless? I haven't done it for a long time, but it was probably the most entertaining few hours of my Runescape life when I last did it. You don't have to be a particular kind of aimless player to enjoy being able to step back from it all once in a while and just mess around and it is for that reason that I actually quite enjoyed the article. Can you actually prove, any more than the author, that either one of you is right or wrong? (This isn't meant to sound like a personal attack by the way, I'm just playing devil's advocate for a moment!)

It is wrong to assume that nobody plays for fun anymore - I certainly wouldn't still be playing if it didn't bring some modicum of enjoyment, but at the same time the basic point of the article seems solidly based on firm logic.

Actually mine isn't. I never said that how I play was how others should, or that others didn't have fun playing how I do. Show me one assumption in my statement. I've played my fair of hide 'n' seek, gone to the KQ, barrows, etc. I do these for fun, nothing else.

Because the real, true path of Runescape is really the one which is the less travelled

That is a HUGE assumption.

The article would have been far better if instead the author had as his thesis something along the lines of "The beauty of RuneScape is that there is no right or wrong way to play the game, within the rules. One can sit around chatting, play hide 'n' seek with friends, or try and make as much money as they can. The beauty of this game is in the different paths we all take, whether it is going for an incredibly rare untrimmed cape, or trying to make 300m for that GWD set. The beauty is in deciding how to spend your hard earn cash, or to beg at the GE for cash, if you so please. The beauty is in the freedom to do what you want, when you want, with those who, although virtual characters in a virtual world, may really be amazing friends"

You might want to fix your quote with the following ;)

If you do enjoy them, then continue to take this path less traveled: the path of fun.

Anyway, I am not making an assumption. In the article I make an attack on grinding which, based on everyone's complaints, is something everyone hates. I did not necessarily say that creative gameplay ideas are the ONLY way players can have fun, based on the following quote:

If you dont like them, fair enough, return to the grind.

Maybe if certain individuals read the whole article before making their own assumptions about it, then this argument would not have begun.

Bottom line...

If you think looking at the number 99 is fun, or killing hundreds of thousands of monsters in the process is fun, then fine, you're right. If not, then I suggest you stop this argument now.

Player since 2004. All skills 1M+ XP.

Fun is subjective.

I know i would prefer a PVP trip to some random campfire with my e-buddies.

O.O

For the sake of being picky here, yes you did make an assumption. You cannot claim that "most people" don't play in a particular style, without having yourself interviewed more than half of the total players of runescape. I suspect you have not.

Pedantry aside, my comment was levelled at you for the sole reason that you suggested Swedishboy was wrong to approve of the article's inherent message of fun being the most important factor, because that apparently isn't how people play. Unfortunately, that is an assumption that you will find hard to back up with unassailable proof.

Your second point there - technically it is not an assumption, it is a very dubious statement of "fact" but I believe was intended more as an indicator of the author's personal view. For my money, the article we were given is much more interesting than a pointless thesis on how great diversity is. It is nice to read an opinionated article and debate it rather than just settle for an article which says: "isn't this nice...?" But again, that's just my opinion. You're entitled to your own and I won't try to persuade you otherwise, but I'm not convinced your solutions would be quite so palatable to Tip.It readers as you seem to think. Again, just a theory. :P

  • 2 weeks later...

Fun is when we enjoy playing the game.

It might differ for people, but I certainly say that sometimes we might just want to take a breeze in the game and roam out relaxing.

Some like high total levels and exp, some like MH, some like skilling, some like random things. Nevertheless, we have our own perspectives on each.

Pardon my old bump. I just thought it was something good to be discussed.

Yeah, like that zaryte bow

wait

recharge costs = ammo.

So, all melee weapons are overpowered, at least.

this combat triangle finally makes sense...
