Blizzard to require real names for forums

However I think the act of deliberately searching and combining some information just to blackmail a person should be considered

While perhaps it's unethical and immoral, no laws exist to keep you from accessing public domain material, or enforce/regulate it's proper usage, infact it's similar to websites like how peopleofwalmart are ran - If you go out in public with your 1970s pajamas and a multi colored sweater from the 1960s and end up as an internet meme , you have no legal grounds because you were in a public place and lose your right to privacy. Some facebook lawsuits were filed where a friend takes the picture of you drinking a beer underage or doing something bad you don't want people to see - nothing can be done - in usa as far as i am aware, the person who takes the picture - owns the copyright for it.

Of course pictures I place here are public: however copying and/or reposting them somewhere else should be against the law

Often when you upload a picture to myspace/facebook/photobucket (Depending on the sites TOS) You forfeit a great deal of your ownership in the piece. As soon as you send the image to a friend, you lose the rights to it to a degree. Been cases where facebook advertising used your friends pictures for advertisements, people sued, cases did not win at all.

.

(just look at for example how child porn is handled - not saying crimes as described are as bad as child porn - but it does work).

Child porn is a major Felony and a horrible comparison, and for the most part is only deeply cracked down on in USA, UK and a few other countries like China, places like Russia or Japan - don't care as much if it all. (Lolicon is legal in japan and over 50% of manga produced in japan yet you can get arrested for it in USA, while it's pending criminalization in the UK (currently legal) - 3 major countries cannot agree on what constitutes child porn and art, you think they will on harrasment? Lets not even get into countries like India, China or Iran that filter internet and make it a crime to do common things like blog about current events. India = Homemade porn is 2 years jail, America = Nothing as long as everyone is of age. Worldwide laws will NEVER happen and are NOT practical.

http://www.japanator.com/elephant/post.phtml?pk=8753

harassment isn't a felony like Child pornography, as it is currently a misdemeanor. Which means jailtime isn't always even associated with being convicted of it.

ISP's are required to keep data for a month here in europe since a year or 2.. Enough for quick-law to take action

45 Days in America I believe, the problem is more often then not the government is over-reached and to my knowledge, law requires a court order here, and that takes time. I've never heard of any "quick law" cases involving an ISP and law enforcement, and I do have a working knowledge of law enforcement and lawsuit proceedings dealing with getting information from ISP's due to the nature of my job.

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."

It seems like they are trying to experiment with something highly explosive that, which most likely, would explode in their faces.

I hope Blizzard's Fire Department and their Attourneys are standing by, things could get really nasty.

But I can see how it can be beneficial, however, at the moment, the negative aspects just overwhelm the positives. It just scares me.

I'm just not convinced. We'll see how well Blizzard handles this.

You seem to have an inflated idea of what law inforcement is going to do. They have "real" crimes to tend to, they are not going to spend man-hours because some 14 year old is getting threatening phone calls from some other 14 year old. That's just "kids stuff", not something for police to get involved in. And if they do get involved, say the kid is the child of a school board memeber or something, likely it ruins kid B's life, cause they are going to hit him hard and fast, and he will probably be a really hardened criminal when he gets out of juvie when he's 21. There is no middle ground. And it wont matter what age the people are because its in conection with a "game" which means it's not serious and the police will immediatly scoff it off as childishness. Gaming, after all, is not the adult pasttime of drinking beer and taking pop-shots at the cans.

Well the first course of action -if it happens through kids- is for the parents to take contact with the other parents.. Then the other parents should give their child a stern look and it ought to be over! If that doesn't work, the parent of the offended kid should take it to the school, which should take action (maybe add a theme about social interactions to the course), if all that won't work, there is apparantly something much more problematic with the offending kid. (not listening to school & parents, isn't really bright) and some other organization specialized for these types of kids should be mobilized!

And don't say me this is a lot of work: most of it goes automatically and really how often do you expect this to happen?

A) You have to know who is doing it

B) my child is a little angel and would never do such a thing, you horible horible man!!! how do you know my kid!! are you luring him into chat rooms! i'm calling the cops, you pervert

C) uh, what if the stalker is a 65 year old man?

D) Hahahah!! schools cant even admit to a non-costodial parent that a child even goes to a school. You try telling a school to do something about something that they have no proof of, and happened outside of school. They are far too busy to listen to every nut that calls up and says " you should say something to little jonny, he's theatening me over what we did last night in WOW" They will call the police on you, for even calling up and mentioning a kid and you will have your life torn apart for any sign of impropriaty with minors. This one I really do promise! Anyone who calls up about a kid they have no business knowing about is looked at with suspicion.

But seriously, if you try that last one, please post it on youtube for me, I need a good laugh. You really need to leave this perfect little world you've constructed where everyone is good, looks out for each other, and the police and teachers, etc go have "a good little talking to" to everyone who is heading down the wrong path, and convinces the misguided to get back on the path of good behavior, because you have "heroically" brought the problem to their attention, which they greatly apriciate. How would we have saved little Jonny with out you?

Edit: Where were you to save Timmy!!! rofl!!!

If you dont be a flaming [wagon] then who cares if people know your name.

What ever you say Kenny (Won't say your last name, as I believe in internet anonymity), and with that I know your last name, your address, your phone-number, your parents names (and if I cared more, their information too), your other usernames, your interests, and what communities you are apart of. it took me 30 minutes to research it all, and to connect you to your other usernames which lead to you.

I could make your life extremely difficult. I could have *tons* of [cabbage] delivered to your house, I could take out purchases orders in your name that would leave you in debt. I could harass you for years, all without exposing myself, and all it took was 30 minutes to research it all. Now imagine if this post you had made had your first and last name, that would change that 30 minutes into 5 minutes. The ability for me to quickly and easily screw you over would be worth it for some angry person that you make mad on a forum. He wouldn't even have to work for 30 minutes, he already has a big part of your information...... just 5 minutes and you are being sent 20 pizzas for "your" party.

Now do you understand why Real ID is a bad idea?

Pizzas are only the tip of the iceberg, 4Chan has proven that personal information should be closely guarded on the internet. I mean, if you look at some of the raids, it is really horrible what happens to people. Enough provoking goes on in a forum that taking away anonymity makes everyone vulnerable and a target.

Imagine all the times you've pissed people off on the internet. Now imagine they had the power to go on Craigslist and order 'escorts' to your home and then call police. Taking away anonymity makes this possible.

PM me in game anytime

It's a lot easier then that for an idiot to sound smart on the internet.

That's exactly what you're doing right now... just saying.

I'm not sure where you live.. But these course of actions nowadays happens frequently here in the netherlands for taunts through MSN & other social media! - There is even build a specific department at the police for specifically this! (electronic taunts by children)

First they came to fishing

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing

Then they came to the yews

and I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews

Then they came for the ores

and I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Even with a thousand special departments (it's fairly small btw) this wouldn't work across borders or continents. For Dutch players, most of the players they meet will be from outside the country. Consequently, most of the harrasment will be from outside the country, maybe more so. Without fear of getting caught, these angry pvpers could send their spam forever.

Blizzard forums are full of asshats.

They have THE WORST COMMUNITY of any online game.

The only new connections going on are going to be criminal.

Never posting or playing that game again.

They have recently announced that they arent going to implement this change anyway, based on feedback from their community.

And this is where Jagex decides that "We want to outdo team Blizzard. Let's implement it!" \:D/

Jagex would never implement it so long as they still cater to the ten-year-olds and people get muted for saying their name/age/whatever in-game. Besides, it honestly wouldn't improve RSOF or get rid of trolls at all - even with your name, address, and face on the internet, you can effectively remain anonymous. You'd just be one [wagon] in the millions, and nobody will ever use the info to find you, spend money traveling, and actually bother to do anything to you irl, because it wouldn't be worth it in the long run - there are too many trolls, so knowing where they live won't help anyone stop them. If anyone's interested as to why public names (and with the use of certain free websites, public addresses and phone numbers as well) would have little impact on the hordes of trolls at RSOF, consider how/why trolls operate in the first place:

Such a decision would have little impact on people trolling, and it would have a more severe impact on normal people (specifically those who do give their real names, unlike trolls, who probably habitually give false names even when it's not necessary). It won't improve human interfacing over the internet, because that isn't even the root of the problems with human relations over the web - the fact that we communicate via raw text with the occasional BBCode and emoticon, but cannot express body movements, facial expressions, or tone of voice is. Obviously the internet will be staying that way, and even several large social networking sites requiring webcam&microphone usage will never change that. But the idea that a name will honestly make people worry that much about respecting others as real people over the internet is laughable. Name or not, subconsciously we'd all think of them as raw text first and people second - it's just a tragic flaw between the human mind and the internet. If you were to go out and have a conversation with a complete stranger and found that you two have some things in common, you'd find yourself enjoying that real-life conversation far more than than you would an IM conversation with a dear e-friend, regardless of whose name you do or don't know. I can honestly say that by far I prefer to converse with my real-life friends in real life than over the internet or via phone, but hell, even phone's a richer medium of conversation than the internet. I can see what Blizzard hoped for, but even if they did instate the policy, it wouldn't improve the quality of conversation on their forums - people would still subconsciously see each other as text, and the only difference is now they have to worry about whether someone who knows them irl is reading their posts or if some stalker uses that name with one of those free info-finding sites and now knows where they live or will start calling them up at odd hours of the night and breathing creepily. Basically, such a change wouldn't reduce the number of people being rude or trolling, it would only drive away the few normal people there. Anyways, as I said, Jagex won't ever instate such a system either, because they know just how many people would protest and revoke membership, and it's no use trying to even consider one of your competitor's epic failures

Blizzard decided to make RealId optional which is obviously expected. There is no way the system can be implemented without huge negative PR. The question here remains now why the hell did they want this in the first place.

Umm... you know in the news when you hear about kids who have KILLED themselves over these games? (Go look at Off-Topic, perhaps, I've seen posts there.) Whose to say there won't be people who will kill OTHERS? I can't see how ANYONE thinks this is a good idea, it's absolutely ridiculous!! Maybe killing is a little extreme, but anyone could go find anyone else and harass them, whether they have a reason or not! Just because you "behave well" and have "common sense" on the forums doesn't mean the crazy kid is going to decide you aren't worth the fun. Dangerous, stupid, I can't wait until Blizzard gets sued and realises what a terrible idea it was.

EDIT: I read a link someone posted on page 3 or 4, and I'm very glad to hear that the idea has been removed, or changed or whatever. :)

This is what I would expect to happen.

No way in hell would I let anyone know my real name. They might be able to somehow prove that I play runescape to actual people!

EDIT: On the other hand, increased accountability is always a good thing in my eyes. I would just preferr it to be a one ways street, as in I don't even slightly care what internet people know, but actual friends/family need to be kept in the dark.

EDIT:: Bit disappointed to see that they wussed out. Not that I actually care either way, but wussing out in general is to be avoid. I don't care if I said I would eat a sasquatch, If you say you will do something, should have the balls to do it.
