Rewards over storyline?

Synthox

Recommended Posts

In a recent Runescape poll, one of the questions asked was, "what do you most look forward to in a new quest?"

66% (2/3) of the people said the rewards, and only

28% (2/7) said the storyline.

What happened to appreciation of quests? Is all we care about the rewards? If Jagex threw out a quest with a really stupid objective but great rewards, would you do it? Actually, sorry, stupid question. Based on the poll, you would do it, mostly for the rewards, some for the quest cape. I, for one, would to it too. I would want the rewards, and wouldn't pay attention to the storyline. But then Jagex give out a quest like Cold War, with a really interesting and mysterious storyline, and only okay rewards, the main being the agility course, and it doesn't get a second thought. So what i'm getting to is, ???????. When did the storyline only become important to 28 percent of the runescape population?

Because Jagex is horrible at writing a storyline. Well they suck at making rewards too. If you care about a storyline you shouldn't waste time doing a quest and ask jagex to just write a story or something. Like that zanik thing.

Why? - an quest is much more interactive.

Don't forget we are playing an RPG, there stories should be the main thing!

And in most quest the stories are pretty humorous (got to love the british humor), and actually no that bad!

First they came to fishing

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing

Then they came to the yews

and I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews

Then they came for the ores

and I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Quests in MMO consist of combinations of the following 3 components:

1. Go talk to X NPC

2. Bring X NPC quantity Y of item X

3. Kill X of monster Y

and that is why quests suck in MMOs, and therefore I only care about a quest if it affects gameplay outside of questing.

Although I must say some of the quests are kind of dull, some sparkle gloriously. Take cold war for example. A great quest with cool rewards.

And tell me you didn't laugh... at all... the first time you hit the tuxedo time button and became a penguin.

Well they suck at making rewards too.

Quest rewards and items bring alot of much needed variety to the game, in addition to some generally bad ass gear. For example:

Prayer books

Hand cannon

Prosylete armor

Soul wars cape

Neitz Helm

Penguin Points

Tears of Guthix

Access to Curses

9 (TDs from WGS+your 8) good rewards from 167 quests. Definitely great.

DK drops (solo/LS): 66 hatchets, 14 archer rings, 13 berserker rings, 17 warrior rings, 12 seerculls, 13 mud staves, 7 seers rings

QBD drops: 1 kite, 2 visages, 4 dragonbone kits, 3 effigies, lots of crossbow parts

CR vs. CLS threads always turn into discussions about penis size.
...
It's not called a Compensation Longsword for nothing.

I've sent a 12k combat mission to have Aiel assassinated (poor bastard isn't even Pincers-tier difficulty).

I play the quests for enjoyment. Some of them have really great dialogues, and story. However, some quests are so annoying that I just want to get over with them, not really caring about the reward or the story. For example, rat catcher was a huge pain in the ass. But generally, Quest itself > Reward for me.

Because Jagex's quests contain your standard amount of monty python references, childish (imo) humor and uninteresting premises. Not everyone plays this game for jagex's storyline or enjoys quests. I recently obtained ancient curses. Can you guess what the most tedious part of that process was for me? Not the 200ish mil gp required or grinding out the 8.7 some mil xp for 95 prayer... it was doing the stupid quests in order to make the level i just spent hours grinding for xp and gp, useful.

Since Jagex's storylines become crap. Oh wait, they've always been that way. Also, thanks for converting those percentiles into fractions, I would have had no idea what you were getting at otherwise.

Despite good quests, and i did genuinely have fun with monkey madness, you can never shake the feeling that theres 1000 more saviors of the world running around doing the same thing.

Rewards on the other hand, are awesome. You can bring them to PVP, castle wars, or soul wars, and start kicking face with them :D

If i wanted truely immersive quests with a good storyline, i would be playing a single player game right now (like oblivion!), anyway.

O.O

Oh? What quest gives you extremes?

Despite what some people say, I found some storylines quite intersting, like the pirate line, I'm also starting the Myreque line right now, and I loved the way Meiredytch (sp)? was built. I had tons of fun going on that "agility course" of a city.

I'd say most quests in RS has a good storyline, and is very enjoyable, but some are just annoying (looking at One Small Favour <_< )
