Making RuneScape prettier

I like to edit RuneScape and try to make it look nice

I only edit with Vegas, a video editor (lol), since for the life of me I can't figure out Photoshop nor am I willing to learn.

I just thought I would put up pictures I have edited.. I know there's a separate area for requests but if you like to send me a message of a screenshot of RS with no text or damage splats etc in it, maybe I Will edit it and give it back or something. I can change colors of items and just add basic blurs and contrasts etc, etc.

I shall put up more pictures as I make them, as well as as I find them on my computer. (I have many old ones)

They look worse. Overly contrasting and bluring an already bad looking game isn't automatically going to make it look cool or better.

Can you explain how they're worse specifically, so I can try to improve them at all? Right now your criticism is about as specific as it is constructive.

I think the blurring is to simulate tilt/shift.

Yeah the very last one currently was my attempt at that.

A couple were just trying to create a synthetic feel of Depth of Field, and the Agility and Coast one were Radial Blurs I was just messing around with, to try to mix of the focus points a little

I explained (bolded). They are too contrasted and your attempt at doing depth of field just makes it look incredibly blurry. Use your head and you can figure out how to make it better (pro-tip: don't use too much contrast and tone down the depth of field effect)

I know.

Listen to Nadril and take on his advice. Also, don't be afraid to use photoshop, it is pretty damn easy...

Nice stuff

It's always nice to see modifications to RuneScape imagery/videos, there are some nice shots up there^^. But of course, you have to be slightly careful with overusing some effects. Though I'm sure a lot of stuff looks more epic with some music and motion.

Listen to Nadril and take on his advice

While I understand that Nadril is pro at art C/C, this is one occasion where I don't think his advice is so helpful. He essentially said that Log's work is hopeless because RS itself has crappy graphics and Log's not making it any better. I remember I got the same sort of CC from people here when I posted my screenshot fakes. While I understand that the game has crappy graphics when compared to most industry-standard games (and, for that matter, real life, as a lot of people here do works with photography), this does not mean than any work built off of RS graphics is inherently crap. That's the sort of reactions my works here got, and I was actually told to stop wasting my time working with RS graphics. I think it would be nice if some people here would acknowledge that there are different styles of art, and machinima and screenshot fakes are just as valid as any other form. Of course works built off RS won't have the same quality as some irl photographs or something, but that does not mean that working with RS graphics is thus a flaw in itself. :-|

@Log: Nice work - my favorite is the fourth from the bottom (the one of you), because it just seems like something you wouldn't expect with RS and blends so well

I never said that Mario. All I said is that adding contrast and a depth of field effect, while it may look cool in a different style of game, doesn't look good in this occasion. That isn't to say you can't make the game look better, you just need to try harder than applying a few settings.

At any rate you seem to assume a lot Mario. I have a high respect for Machinima creators. Faking screenshots? Not so much but whatever.

Get Paint.Net/GIMP/Anything. Don't use Vegas. It is a VIDEO editor. Not a PHOTO editor. You will find the benefits of actually using a proper program to be rather substantial. It may seem like an easy alternative at the time, but it isn't.

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

What I find most annoying is that you are unwilling to learn. Photoshop/GIMP/whatever is incredibly easy, said bluntly it takes very little skill to do with them what you did with Vegas. That said, you probably just used filters in Vegas to achieve those effects, which doesn't take much skill either (Or for that matter any more skill than doing it in PS/GIMP).

As for the actual pictures themselves, they're just cliché over-saturated filter effects. But that doesn't disturb me as much as what I talked about above.

^ lol skully... i agree though dont reject good advice, photoshop, fireworks, gimp. theyre all better and more efficient. dont bother showing us these cheesy pictures and expect us not to reccomend a better editing program as our first piece of advice.

your just setting yourself up to fail.

It's not that the effects you're using can't improve a picture, but you're doing the same thing over and over regardless of the source image. For example, creating a depth of field (DoF) effect can be incredibly effective, but it definitely isn't a kind of trick that can be used anywhere.

I'll go a bit more in depth since you asked for critique :

The first picture was actually an appropriate one for a DoF effect. The only thing that bothers me is that some parts are blurred when they shouldn't be. Specifically, the ledge on which she's standing should've stayed sharp because it's in focus while a part of the barricade below stayed clear when it should be blurred. That alone should demonstrate why video editing software is insufficient for what you have in mind.

A simple radial blur effect wasn't enough, some touching up was needed for a convincing effect.

Contrast is also a valuable asset to focus the viewer's attention, but apparently you chose to increase it everywhere. What you could do instead is to increase the contrast only for the things you want the viewers to focus on.

The last two share the same problem : they shouldn't be blurred at all.

The 2nd to last can't have a DoF effect because pretty much everything around the character is close and is therefore in focus.

As for the last one, you don't get blurring on landscape shots with no defined focus.

It's not all bad though, I do like the 3rd, 5th and 6th ones :)

3rd has a nice mood to it, the only thing I would try is to darken it a bit.

5th makes me think of an explorer in a dark cave. Too bad he doesn't have a lantern though, that would've been the perfect justification for such contrasted yellow-ish colors.

And the 6th makes me think of assassin's creed :o

Alright, sorry if I misinterpreted your first post, but I still don't really consider it CC, because, in my opinion, constructive criticism requires not only telling the artist what they're doing is wrong, but also specifying what they should do instead if it isn't obvious (for example, I would consider saying that a shot is too close up is CC, because it's obvious the solution to make it better is to not zoom in too far. However, I wouldn't consider it CC to say that an image looks uncomfortable or unnatural, without specifying what causes it to seem unnatural, or giving advice on how to make it seem more natural). However, I guess arguing about that is moot, since you actually did give him CC in your second post :P

And sorry for my assumptions, but I made those assumptions based on other posts I've seen from you (namely, to me). I guess your comments here are a bit more helpful to Log than you were to me, since the only advice I've received from your posts on my works were to stop doing them because it's "pointless" for me to "waste my time" on RuneScape-based works, and to stop writing so much because my way of speech is "developmentally delayed".[1][2] So I'm sorry if I made any assumptions about you, but I did so based only on my past experience with your posts. I know there's a fine line between constructive criticism and destructive criticism, but in my opinion you do cross it some times :-|

@unknowz: good observations - I have to agree that DOF was overused and done improperly on some of these. Especially the last one - by doing that much blurring, especially with such a narrow DOF, it creates an effect as though all the characters standing there are a centimeter high with the camera pulled really close - DOF that narrow relative to the subjects and camera height almost always creates the illusion that they are very small

I still stand by what I said in any previous threads.

Look when it comes down to it I'm just giving my opinion. He can take it or leave it, it doesn't really matter to me. Anyways part of being an artist is to figure out that stuff for yourself. If someone just tells you straight up what to do than you're nothing but a monkey controlling a program. I'm not going to force someone to do something if they don't want to, I'll just drop it and move on. If people are happy making random Runescape pictures and modifications its fine by me, just don't expect me to be impressed or pretend to be.

ps: if you have such an issue with me that you're linking sources to bad things I've said take it to pm and lets not spam up this thread.
