Before you can adjust to the darkness and find your cellphone for light, a bright flash, like one of those huge LED maglites, appears for just a second in your window, like a bolt of lightning outside your house. There's no rain, and oddly enough no clouds, but you do hear a sizzling noise from outside. You look outside and realize there's a bright, bright light from the opposite side of your house. There is complete and utter silence, not even the distant traffic anymore. You wonder if you've been, I don't know, deafened somehow. You run to the other side of your house and look out the door.
