Sitcoms of the 80s and 90s

I was watching a rerun of Seinfeld yesterday and it made me wonder. What did people feel about the show when the new episodes were being produced?

So my question to the people of Tip.it is, were you alive during the time when these shows were being produced and what was your (and your family's) reaction to it?

It's a brilliant show! Various random events happening to each of the characters, until they mesh at the very end.

What do you hate about it? :|

Full House is the best sitcom of that era. Honestly, I didn't get into sitcoms until the late 90s and early 00's.

Grounded for Life, How I met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men...so on and so forth

My dad loves Only Fools and Horses and Keeping Up Appearances. I think he appreciates/relates to that humor more than these modern sitcoms.

I've watched Keeping up Appearances a few times on PBS. There's also this wierd one about the French resistance and a hapless bartender, but I can't find the name of it.

The only sitcom I ever liked at all was Friends - and even then that's mostly from watching the DVDs recently.

Two and a half men is just annoying, but How I met your mother has it's moments(from the little I've seen of it)

Yes, thank you! We need a new Seinfeld. Maybe a show called Jerry?

'Allo 'Allo! I love that show. "I was pissing by the door, when I heard two shats. You are holding in your hand a smoking goon; you are clearly the guilty potty." Oh, Officer Crabtree.

As for me, Black Adder, Seinfeld, 'Allo 'Allo, Airwolf (!), Knight Rider, Fresh Prince and Cheers is what made my afternoons when I was growing up.

I don't think you can beat Arrested Development. It would be epic if a show someday did, I just don't think it is possible. Seinfeld is probably my number two, there are laugh out loud moments but it is mostly because of how good of a show it is. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is funnier than Seinfeld but not quite as "good". As you can tell only Seinfeld from that list is in your 80s and 90s era, I just didn't find many all that funny. Laugh tracks really degrade a show, my last rewatch of the Seinfeld series it was actually getting a little grating.

Yeah, Arrested Development along with Black Adder are probably my favourite comedies of all time. Always Sunny is fantastic as well (and so damn quotable). I also agree that too many sitcoms rely on laugh tracks nowadays. It's like they constantly need to remind us to laugh because they know their jokes are [cabbage] (case in point: 2½ Men). It's just lazy. But hey, it demonstrably works on Joe Sixpack.

edit: To clarify, I realise many sitcoms in the '90s used laugh tracks as well. But in my opinion shows like Cheers, Seinfeld, Married with Children, etc. could definitely stand on their own - whereas shows like 2½ Men and According to Jim can not.

I hated Seinfeld. I never find it funny. Friends I didn't like.

I grew up having to watch shows like Everyone Loves Raymond and Home Improvement. Looking at those now, not funny. I watched Full House which now I find is really stupid. Same with Saved By The Bell.

My favorite sitcom is Married With Children. It is always funny. I guess it does have a certain sense of humor not everyone can enjoy, but I think all the characters are hilarious and the plots of each episode are just too crazy. It's rude, it's sexual, it contains all the humor a sixteen year old boy wants from a sitcom. Plus it's one of those shows where I like all of the characters.

Plus, Married With Children's audience tracks were so overused, it was funny. It's like it has the most overenthusiastic crowd. They laugh all the time, they go "WOOOOOOOOO!" every time something sexy happens or is about to happen. It's just great.
